Incorporating Potassium Citrate to Improve the Performance of Tin‐Lead Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract Easy‐to‐form tin vacancies at the buried interface of tin‐lead perovskites hinder the performance of low‐bandgap perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a synergistic strategy by incorporating potassium citrate (PC) into the poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole‐transport layer to passivate the buried interface of Sn‐Pb PSCs is reported. PC neutralizes the acidity of PEDOT:PSS and stabilizes the perovskite front surface, enhancing device stability. Citrate moieties coordinate with Sn 2+ on the buried perovskite surface, preventing Sn 2+ oxidation and suppressing defect formation. Additionally, potassium cations incorporate into Sn‐Pb perovskites, enhancing crystallinity and passivating halide defects. The combined benefits enable efficient low‐bandgap Sn‐Pb PSCs with a power conversion efficiency of 22.7% and a high open‐circuit voltage of 0.894 V. Using this method, 26.1% efficiency for all‐perovskite tandem solar cells is demonstrated. These results emphasize the significance of buried interface passivation in developing efficient and stable Sn‐Pb PSCs and all‐perovskite tandem solar cells.

Improving the performance of PM6 donor polymer by random ternary copolymerization of BDD and DTBT segments

Developing high-performance wide bandgap polymer donors to match the rapidly growing non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs) is of great importance to further improve the photovoltaic performances of organic solar cells (OSCs). PM6 and D18 are two leading wide bandgap donor polymers, but their performances are highly sensitive to the molecular weights, which have distinct impact on the morphology and thereby the charge generation and recombination processes. Here, in this work, we reported the random ternary copolymerization of PM6 and D18 segments to develop random terpolymers with finely tuned photoelectronic properties and optimized blend morphology for high-performance OSCs. The resulting random terpolymers (PMD-5, PMD-10, PMD-15 and PMD-20) exhibited finely tuned absorptions, energy levels and blend morphology. The optimal morphology of PMD-15:L8-BO contributed to the fast exciton diffusion and dissociation, efficient charge extraction with suppressed recombination. Thus, the power conversion efficiency was improved from 17.22% of the control PM6 devices and 17.47% of the control D18 devices to 18.12% of PMD-15 based devices, which is the top performance of random terpolymers. Moreover, the PMD-15 exhibited much higher batch-to-batch reproducibility at a broad molecular weight range than that of PM6 and D18, showing promising for practical applications.

Fluorinated polythiophenes with ester side chains for boosting the V OC and efficiency in non-fullerene polymer solar cells

As the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) approximates the 19 % threshold, wide bandgap (WBG) polythiophenes (PTs) have gained increasing attention due to their simple chemical structures and ease of synthesis, making them promising candidates for large-scale production. However, the benchmark polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is limited by its high-lying HOMO energy level, which restricts the open-circuit voltage (V OC ) in solar cells. Here, in this study, we introduce a novel series of PT derivatives (PDC8-T, PDC8-3T, PDC16-3T, and PDC16-3T-2F) featuring ester side chains designed to fine-tune electronic properties through a streamlined three-step synthesis. Additionally, we incorporated a π-spacer to reduce steric hindrance and elongated alkyl side chains to improve solubility and processability. Compared to P3HT, these PT derivatives demonstrate a significant reduction in HOMO energy levels, lowering by approximately 0.3–0.4 eV. Among them, PDC16-3T-2F—with fluorine atom substitution—achieves the lowest HOMO energy level, induces a coplanar molecular conformation, and enhances polymer aggregation behavior. We evaluated these PT derivatives in inverted non-fullerene bulk-heterojunction (NFA BHJ) OPVs. The PDC8-3T device showed a relatively low PCE of 0.69 %, with a V OC of 0.76 V, a short-circuit current density (J SC ) of 3.32 mA/cm 2 , and a fill factor (FF) of 27.3 %. In contrast, the PDC16-3T-2F device achieved an impressive PCE of 7.21 %, with a V OC of 0.85 V, a J SC of 14.60 mA/cm 2 , and an FF of 58.4 %. This remarkable improvement is attributed to the fluorine substitution, which not only enhances molecular orientation but also downshifts the HOMO energy level and further boosts the V OC . Hence, these molecular design strategies have led to a fibrillar bicontinuous interpenetrating network with optimal nanoscale phase separation within the active layer.

Single-layered organic photovoltaics with double cascading charge transport pathways: 18% efficiencies

The chemical structure of donors and acceptors limit the power conversion efficiencies achievable with active layers of binary donor-acceptor mixtures. Here, using quaternary blends, double cascading energy level alignment in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic active layers are realized, enabling efficient carrier splitting and transport. Numerous avenues to optimize light absorption, carrier transport, and charge-transfer state energy levels are opened by the chemical constitution of the components. Record-breaking PCEs of 18.07% are achieved where, by electronic structure and morphology optimization, simultaneous improvements of the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current and fill factor occur. The donor and acceptor chemical structures afford control over electronic structure and charge-transfer state energy levels, enabling manipulation of hole-transfer rates, carrier transport, and non-radiative recombination losses.

Regiospecific N -alkyl substitution tunes the molecular packing of high-performance non-fullerene acceptors

The rapid development of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) with strong near-infrared absorption has led to remarkably enhanced short-circuit current density (J sc ) values in organic solar cells (OSCs). NFAs based on the benzotriazole (Bz) fused-ring π-core have great potential in delivering both high J sc and decent open-circuit voltage values due to their strong intramolecular charge transfer with reasonably low energy loss. Here in this work, we have designed and synthesized a series of Bz-based NFAs, PN6SBO-4F, AN6SBO-4F and EHN6SEH-4F, via regiospecific N-alkyl engineering based on the high-performance NFA mBzS-4F that was reported previously. The molecular packing of mBzS-4F, AN6SBO-4F, and EHN6SEH-4F single crystals was analyzed using X-ray crystallography in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the correlation between the molecular structure, the charge-transporting properties, and the solar cell performance. Compared with the typical honeycomb single-crystal structure of Y6 derivatives, these NFAs exhibit distinctly different molecular packing patterns. The strong interactions of terminal indanone groups in mBzS-4F and the J-aggregate-like packing in EHN6SEH-4F lead to the formation of ordered 3D networks in single-crystals with channels for efficient charge transport. Consequently, OSCs based on mBzS-4F and EHN6SEH-4F show efficient photon-to-current conversions, achieving the highest power conversion efficiency of 17.48% with a Jsc of 28.83 mA cm -2 .

Maximizing the external radiative efficiency of hybrid perovskite solar cells

Despite rapid advancements in power conversion efficiency in the last decade, perovskite solar cells still perform below their thermodynamic efficiency limits. Non-radiative recombination, in particular, has limited the external radiative efficiency and open circuit voltage in the highest performing devices. We review the historical progress in enhancing perovskite external radiative efficiency and determine key strategies for reaching high optoelectronic quality. Specifically, we focus on non-radiative recombination within the perovskite layer and highlight novel approaches to reduce energy losses at interfaces and through parasitic absorption. By strategically targeting defects, it is likely that the next set of record-performing devices with ultra-low voltage losses will be achieved.

Design of Star‐Shaped Trimer Acceptors for High‐Performance (Efficiency > 19%), Photostable, and Mechanically Robust Organic Solar Cells

Abstract High power conversion efficiency (PCE), long‐term stability, and mechanical robustness are prerequisites for the commercial applications of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this study, a new star‐shaped trimer acceptor (TYT‐S) is developed and high‐performance OSCs with a PCE of 19.0%, high photo‐stability (t 80% lifetime = 2600 h under 1‐sun illumination), and mechanical robustness with a crack‐onset strain (COS) of 21.6% are achieved. The isotropic molecular structure of TYT‐S affords efficient multi‐directional charge transport and high electron mobility. Furthermore, its amorphous structure prevents the formation of brittle crystal‐to‐crystal interfaces, significantly enhancing the mechanical properties of the OSC. As a result, the TYT‐S‐based OSCs demonstrate a significantly higher PCE (19.0%) and stretchability (COS = 21.6%) than the linear‐shaped trimer acceptor (TYT‐L)‐based OSCs (PCE = 17.5% and COS = 6.4%) and the small‐molecule acceptor (MYT)‐based OSCs (PCE = 16.5% and COS = 1.3%). In addition, the increased molecular size of TYT‐S, relative to that of MYT and dimer (DYT), suppresses the diffusion kinetics of the acceptor molecules, substantially improving the photostability of the OSCs. Finally, to effectively demonstrate the potential of TYT‐S, intrinsically stretchable (IS)‐OSCs are constructed. The TYT‐S‐based IS‐OSCs exhibit high device stretchability (strain at PCE 80% = 31%) and PCE of 14.4%.

Carbon Nanotubes for Space Photovoltaic Applications

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be envisioned as an individual graphene sheet rolled into a seamless cylinder (single-walled, SWNT), or concentric sheets as in the case of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) (1). The role-up vector will determine the hexagonal arrangement and "chirality" of the graphene sheet, which will establish the nanotube to be metallic or semiconducting. The optoelectronic properties will depend directly on this chiral angle and the diameter of the SWNT, with semiconductor types exhibiting a band gap energy (2). Characteristic of MWNTs are the concentric graphene layers spaced 0.34 nm apart, with diameters from 10-200 nm and lengths up to hundreds of microns (2). In the case of SWNTs, the diameters range from 0.4 - 2 nm and lengths have been reported up to 1.5 cm (3). SWNTs have the distinguishable property of "bundling" together due to van der Waal's attractions to form "ropes." A comparison of these different structural types is shown in Figure 1. The use of SWNTS in space photovoltaic (PV) applications is attractive for a variety of reasons. Carbon nanotubes as a class of materials exhibit unprecedented optical, electrical, mechanical properties, with the added benefit of being nanoscale in size which fosters ideal interaction in nanomaterial-based devices like polymeric solar cells. The optical bandgap of semiconducting SWNTs can be varied from approx. 0.4 - 1.5 eV, with this property being inversely proportional to the nanotube diameter. Recent work at GE Global Research has shown where a single nanotube device can behave as an "ideal" pn diode (5). The SWNT was bridged over a SiO2 channel between Mo contacts and exhibited an ideality factor of 1, based on a fit of the current-voltage data using the diode equation. The measured PV efficiency under a 0.8 eV monochromatic illumination showed a power conversion efficiency of 0.2 %. However, the projected efficiency of these junctions is estimated to be > 5 %, especially when one considers the enhanced absorption (from nanotubes whose bandgap is tailored to illumination) and electromagnetic coupling in a network of nanotubes.

Suppression of phase separation in AlGaInAs compositionally graded buffers for 1550 nm photovoltaic converters on GaAs

We investigate strategies to suppress phase separation and reduce threading dislocation density (TDD) in AlGaInAs compositionally graded buffers (CGBs) that span the lattice constant range from GaAs to InP. Combining the results from high resolution x-ray diffraction, cathodoluminescence, transmission electron microscopy, and photovoltaic device measurements, we correlate the choices of epitaxial growth conditions with the defect structure of the CGBs and subsequent device performance. Both the use of substrates with high misorientation off (100) toward the (111)A plane and Zn doping instead of Si doping are shown to suppress phase separation and reduce TDD. We demonstrate a 0.74 eV GaInAs device grown on a GaAs substrate offcut 19.5° toward (111)A using a Zn-doped AlGaInAs CGB with TDD = 3.5 ± 0.2 × 10 6 cm -2 that has a bandgap-open circuit voltage offset of only 0.434 V measured under the AM1.5G solar spectrum. We characterized this device under high-intensity irradiance from a 1570 nm laser and measured a 31.9% peak laser power conversion efficiency at 3.6 W/cm 2 irradiance. These results provide a roadmap to the manufacture of laser- and thermal-power conversion devices with the performance and cost-effectiveness needed to drive adoption of these technologies at scale.

Scalable fabrication and coating methods for perovskite solar cells and solar modules

Since the report in 2012 of a solid-state perovskite solar cell (PSC) with a power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.7% and a stability of 500 h, intensive efforts have been made to increase the certified PCE, reaching 25.2% in 2019. The PCE of PSCs now exceeds that of conventional thin-film solar-cell technologies, and the rate at which this increase has been achieved is unprecedented in the history of photovoltaics. Moreover, the development of moisture-stable and heat-stable materials has increased the stability of PSCs. Small-area devices (<1 cm2) are typically fabricated using a spin-coating method; however, this approach may not be suitable for the preparation of the large-area (>100 cm2) substrates required for commercialization. Thus, materials and methods need to be developed for coating large-area PSCs. In this Review, we discuss solution-based and vapour-phase coating methods for the fabrication of large-area perovskite films, examine the progress in performance and the parameters affecting the properties of large-area coatings, and provide an overview of the methodologies for achieving high-efficiency perovskite solar modules.

Ultralow-threshold thin-film lithium niobate optical parametric oscillator

Materials with strong second-order ( χ <#comment/> ( 2 ) ) optical nonlinearity, especially lithium niobate, play a critical role in building optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). However, chip-scale integration of low-loss χ <#comment/> ( 2 ) materials remains challenging and limits the threshold power of on-chip χ <#comment/> ( 2 ) OPO. Here we report an on-chip lithium niobate optical parametric oscillator at the telecom wavelengths using a quasi-phase-matched, high-quality microring resonator, whose threshold power ( ∼ <#comment/> 30 µ <#comment/> W ) is 400 times lower than that in previous χ <#comment/> ( 2 ) integrated photonics platforms. An on-chip power conversion efficiency of 11% is obtained from pump to signal and idler fields at a pump power of 93 µW. The OPO wavelength tuning is achieved by varying the pump frequency and chip temperature. With the lowest power threshold among all on-chip OPOs demonstrated so far, as well as advantages including high conversion efficiency, flexibility in quasi-phase-matching, and device scalability, the thin-film lithium niobate OPO opens new opportunities for chip-based tunable classical and quantum light sources and provides a potential platform for realizing photonic neural networks.

Tailoring Molecular-Scale Contact at Perovskite/Polymeric Hole Transporting Material Interface for Efficient Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have delivered more than 25% of power conversion efficiency (PCE) and incorporating polymers as hole transporting layers (HTLs) can further enhance the stability of devices towards the goal of commercialization. Among various polymeric hole transporting materials, poly(triaryl amine) (PTAA) is one of the promising HTL candidates with good stability; however, the hydrophobicity of PTAA causes problematic interfacial contact with perovskite, limiting the device performance. Using molecular side-chain engineering, we successfully constructed a uniform two-dimensional (2D) perovskite interlayer with conjugated ligands, between three-dimensional (3D) perovskites and PTAA. Further, employing conjugated ligands as cohesive elements, perovskite/PTAA interfacial adhesion was significantly improved. As a result, the thin and lateral extended 2D/3D heterostructure enabled the as-fabricated PTAA-based PSCs to achieve a PCE of 23.7%, improved from the 18% of reference devices. Owing to the increased ion migration energy barrier and conformal 2D coating, unencapsulated devices with the new ligands exhibited both superior thermal stability under 60°C heating and moisture stability in ambient conditions.

Dielectric constant engineering of nonfullerene acceptors enables a record fill factor of 83.58% and a high efficiency of 20.80% in organic solar cells

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) surpassing 20%, but their development remains hindered by the inherently low dielectric constant (εr) of organic semiconductors, which limits charge transport and contributes to serious recombination losses. Herein, we present a comprehensive strategy to overcome the challenge by engineering the dielectric properties of nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs). Two Y-series NFAs of BTP-N3F and BTP-C3F have been synthesized featuring trifluoromethyl (CF 3 ) end-capped alkyl side chains. This molecular design significantly enhances the dipole moment and ε r (up to ∼5.9) when compared to the reference acceptor Y6 (∼3), reducing the exciton binding energy (E b ) and improving charge transport. Furthermore, the incorporation of a high-εr polymer additive, poly(pentafluorostyrene) (PPFS), synergistically improves the active layer morphology and dielectric properties, enabling efficient charge extraction and reduced recombination losses. Devices based on the optimized D18-Cl/BTP-C3F system have achieved a record-high fill factor (FF) of 83.58% and an impressive PCE of 20.80%, setting a new benchmark for OSCs. Finally, our results underscore the pivotal role of ε r in enhancing device performance and establish a versatile pathway for advancing OSC efficiency and stability through molecular and morphological optimization.

P/N In(Al) GaAs Multijunction Laser Power Converters

Eight In(Al)GaAs P/N junctions grown epitaxially on a semi-insulating wafer were monolithically integrated in series to boost the approx. 0.4 V photovoltage per typical In(Al)GaAs junction to over 3 volts for the 1 sq cm laser power converter (LPC) chip. This is the first report of a multijunction LPC for the 1.3 to 1.5 microns wavelength range. This wavelength range is optimum for laser power transmission over low- loss single-mode silica optical fiber, and is also useful with high efficiency 1.315 microns iodine lasers in free-space power transmission. Advantages of multijunction LPC designs include the need for less circuitry for power reconditioning and the potential for lower I(exp 2)R power loss. As an example, these LPCs have a responsivity of approx.1 amp/watt. With a single junction LPC, 100 watts/sq cm incident power would lead to about 100 A/sq cM short-circuit current at approx. 0.4 V open-circuit voltage. One disadvantage is the large current would lead to a large 1(exp 2)R loss which would lower the fill factor so that 40 wattS/sq cm output would not be obtained. Another is that few circuits are designed to work at 0.4 volts, so DC-DC power conversion circuitry would be necessary to raise the voltage to a reasonable level. The multijunction LPC being developed in this program is a step toward solving these problems. In the above example, an eight-junction LPC would have eight times the voltage, approx. 3 V, so that DC-DC power conversion may not be needed in many instances. In addition, the multijunction LPC would have 1/8 the current of a single-junction LPC, for only 1/64 the 1(exp 2)R loss if the series resistance is the same. Working monolithic multijunction laser power converters (LPCs) were made in two different compositions of the ln(x)Al(y)Ga(l-x-y)As semiconductor alloy, In(0.53)Ga(0.47)As (0.74 eV) and In(0.5)Al(0.1)Ga(0.4)As (0.87 eV). The final 0.8 sq cm LPCs had output voltages of about 3 volts and output currents up to about one-half amp. Maximum 1.3 microns power conversion efficiencies were approx. 22%. One key advantage of multijunction LPCs is that they have higher output voltages, so that less DC-DC power conversion circuitry is needed in applications.

Highly Efficient Bifacial Single Junction Perovskite Solar Cells

We report on efficient, single-junction bifacial perovskite solar cells (PSCs) that simultaneously exhibit high front-side-illumination power conversion efficiency (PCE) (over 22 %) and high bifaciality (over 91%), which represents a significant advancement for single junction bifacial PSC development. The bifacial PSCs exhibit substantial performance boost under concurrent front and rear illumination conditions. The stabilized power output goes up to 25.3 mW/cm 2 under albedos of 0.2, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art monofacial single-junction PSCs. Our work demonstrates the value and potential of bifacial single junction PSCs as an attractive direction for future scientific study and commercialization.

Performance and load data from Mod-0A and Mod-1 wind turbine generators

Experimental data, together with supporting analysis, are presented on the power conversion performance and blade loading of large, horizontal-axis wind turbines tested at electric utility sites in the U.S. Four turbine rotor configurations, from 28 to 61 meters in diameter, and data from five test sites are included. Performance data are presented in the form of graphs of power and system efficiency versus free-stream wind speed. Deviations from theoretical performance are analyzed statistically. Power conversion efficiency averaged 0.34 for all tests combined, compared with 0.31 predicted. Round blade tips appeared to improve performance significantly. Cyclic blade loads were normalized to develop load factors which can be used in the design of rotors with rigid hubs.

Titanium Carbide MXene Hole Contacts for CdTe Photovoltaics

CdTe is a high‐efficiency thin‐film photovoltaic technology that has seen tremendous commercial success over the past decade. Yet despite the improvement of other device characteristics, the fabrication of an ohmic hole back contact layer has remained a challenge due to the high ionization potential of CdTe, which limits the external potential that can be feasibly reached even as other characteristics of the device improve. MXenes, a family of 2D materials with rapidly growing scientific and commercial interest, offer a promising route to forming low‐cost, low‐barrier contacts due to their demonstrated high work function, metallic conductivity, and facile solution processing from benign solvents. Here, it is shown that Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene films processed from an aqueous colloidal dispersion can perform as a highly efficient hole contact material for CdTe solar cells, resulting in high power‐conversion efficiencies. The role of the Schottky barrier formation in Ti 3 C 2 T x ‐contacted CdTe devices is probed, and potential pathways for the future development of this potent combination of materials are elucidated. The modularity of the expansive MXene family of materials presents a promising strategy for developing next‐generation hole contacts for CdTe solar cells.

Inverted Three-Junction Tandem Thermophotovoltaic Modules

An InGaAs-based three-junction (3J) tandem thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cell has been investigated to utilize more of the blackbody spectrum (from a 1,100 C general purpose heat source GPHS) efficiently. The tandem consists of three vertically stacked subcells, a 0.74-eV InGaAs cell, a 0.6- eV InGaAs cell, and a 0.55-eV InGaAs cell, as well as two interconnecting tunnel junctions. A greater than 20% TPV system efficiency was achieved by another group with a 1,040 C blackbody using a single-bandgap 0.6- eV InGaAs cell MIM (monolithic interconnected module) (30 lateral junctions) that delivered about 12 V/30 or 0.4 V/junction. It is expected that a three-bandgap tandem MIM will eventually have about 3 this voltage (1.15 V) and about half the current. A 4 A/cm2 would be generated by a single-bandgap 0.6-V InGaAs MIM, as opposed to the 2 A/cm2 available from the same spectrum when split among the three series-connected junctions in the tandem stack. This would then be about a 50% increase (3xVoc, 0.5xIsc) in output power if the proposed tandem replaced the single- bandgap MIM. The advantage of the innovation, if successful, would be a 50% increase in power conversion efficiency from radioisotope heat sources using existing thermophotovoltaics. Up to 50% more power would be generated for radioisotope GPHS deep space missions. This type of InGaAs multijunction stack could be used with terrestrial concentrator solar cells to increase efficiency from 41 to 45% or more.
