Geant4 RApid Pair Production Application (GRAPPA) v1.0.0

GRAPPA is a Geant4 application that simulates the interaction of an incoming particle beam (typically electron or photons) with an High-Z material. Particles are generated at a certain energy and interact with a solid target. The product of this interaction is detected and saved on file. The application implements a basic target that is just a simple box, and it accepts complex target descriptions via GDML files. The user has the freedom to set detectors to capture the desired particles. This application enables studying processes such as antiparticle production, muon generation, and atomic decay.

Electron-positron, parton-parton, and photon-photon production of τ -lepton pairs: Anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments spin effects

Anomalous contributions to the electric and magnetic dipole moments of the τ lepton from new physics scenarios have brought renewed interest in the development of new charge-parity violating signatures in τ -pair production at Belle II energies, and also at higher energies of the Large Hadron Collider and the Future Circular Collider. In this paper, we discuss the effects of spin correlations, including transverse degrees of freedom, in the τ -pair production and decay. These studies include calculating analytical formulas, obtaining numerical results, and building semirealistic observables sensitive to the transverse spin correlations induced by the dipole moments of the τ lepton. The effects of such anomalous contributions to the dipole moments are introduced on top of precision simulations of e − e + → τ − τ + , q q ¯ → τ − τ + and γ γ → τ − τ + processes, involving multibody final states. The τ decays are simulated along with radiative corrections, in particular electroweak box contributions of W W and Z Z exchanges are taken into account. Respective extensions of the Standard Model amplitudes and the reweighting algorithms are implemented into the Monte Carlo, which is used to simulate τ -pair production in e − e + collisions, and the aupinner program, which is used to reweight events with τ pair produced in p p collisions. Data for "Examining Organic Acid Production Potential and Growth-Coupled Strategies in Issatchenkia orientalis Using Constraint-Based Modeling"

Growth-coupling product formation can facilitate strain stability by aligning industrial objectives with biological fitness. Organic acids make up many building block chemicals that can be produced from sugars obtainable from renewable biomass. Issatchenkia orientalis is a yeast strain tolerant to acidic conditions and is thus a promising host for industrial production of organic acids. Here, we use constraint-based methods to assess the potential of computationally designing growth-coupled production strains for I. orientalis that produce 22 different organic acids under aerobic or microaerobic conditions. We explore native and engineered pathways using glucose or xylose as the carbon substrates as proxy constituents of hydrolyzed biomass. We identified growth-coupled production strategies for 37 of the substrate-product pairs, with 15 pairs achieving production for any growth rate. We systematically assess the strain design solutions and categorize the underlying principles involved.

Search for resonant and nonresonant production of pairs of dijet resonances in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for pairs of dijet resonances with the same mass is conducted in final states with at least four jets. Results are presented separately for the case where the four jet production proceeds via an intermediate resonant state and for nonresonant production. The search uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$ collected by the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV. Model-independent limits, at 95% confidence level, are reported on the production cross section of four-jet and dijet resonances. These first LHC limits on resonant pair production of dijet resonances via high mass intermediate states are applied to a signal model of diquarks that decay into pairs of vector-like quarks, excluding diquark masses below 7.6 TeV for a particular model scenario. There are two events in the tails of the distributions, each with a four-jet mass of 8 TeV and an average dijet mass of 2 TeV, resulting in local and global significances of 3.9 and 1.6 standard deviations, respectively, if interpreted as a signal. The nonresonant search excludes pair production of top squarks with masses between 0.50 TeV to 0.77 TeV, with the exception of a small interval between 0.52 and 0.58 TeV, for supersymmetric R-parity-violating decays to quark pairs, significantly extending previous limits. Here, the most significant excess above the predicted background occurs at an average dijet mass of 0.95 TeV, for which the local and global significances are 3.6 and 2.5 standard deviations, respectively.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

General search for supersymmetric particles in scenarios with compressed mass spectra using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A general search is presented for supersymmetric particles (sparticles) in scenarios featuring compressed mass spectra using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. The analyzed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . A wide range of potential sparticle signatures are targeted, including pair production of electroweakinos, sleptons, and top squarks. The search focuses on events with a high transverse momentum system from initial-state-radiation jets recoiling against a potential sparticle system with significant missing transverse momentum. Events are categorized based on their lepton multiplicity, jet multiplicity, number of 𝑏-tagged jets, and kinematic variables sensitive to the sparticle masses and mass splittings. The sensitivity extends to higher parent sparticle masses than previously probed at the LHC for production of pairs of electroweakinos, sleptons, and top squarks with mass spectra featuring small mass splittings (compressed mass spectra). The observed results demonstrate agreement with the predictions of the background-only model. Lower mass limits are set at 95% confidence level on production of pairs of electroweakinos, sleptons, and top squarks that extend to 325, 275, and 780 GeV, respectively, for the most favorable compressed mass regime cases.

Measurement of the production cross section of pairs of isolated photons in pp collisions at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of prompt photon-pair production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Events with two photons in the well-instrumented region of the detector are selected. The photons are required to be isolated and have a transverse momentum of p T, γ1(2) > 40 (30) GeV for the leading (sub-leading) photon. The differential cross sections as functions of several observables for the diphoton system are measured and compared with theoretical predictions from state-of-the-art Monte Carlo and fixed-order calculations. The QCD predictions from next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations and multi-leg merged calculations are able to describe the measured integrated and differential cross sections within uncertainties, whereas lower-order calculations show significant deviations, demonstrating that higher-order perturbative QCD corrections are crucial for this process. The resummed predictions with parton showers additionally provide an excellent description of the low transverse-momentum regime of the diphoton system.

Natural anomaly mediation from the landscape with implications for LHC SUSY searches

Supersymmetric models with the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking (AMSB) form for soft SUSY breaking terms arise in two different settings: (1) extra-dimensional models where SUSY breaking occurs in a sequestered sector, and (2) 4 − d models with dynamical SUSY breaking in a hidden sector where scalars gain masses of order the gravitino mass m 3 / 2 , but gaugino masses and trilinear soft terms are assumed to be of the AMSB form. Both models run into serious conflicts with (1) LHC sparticle and Higgs mass constraints, (2) constraints from winolike weakly interacting massive particle dark matter searches, and (3) bounds from naturalness. These conflicts may be avoided by introducing minor changes to the underlying phenomenological models consisting of nonuniversal bulk scalar Higgs masses and A terms, providing a setting for natural anomaly mediation (nAMSB). In nAMSB, the wino is still expected to be the lightest of the gauginos, but the Higgsinos are expected to be the lightest electroweakinos (EWinos) in accord with naturalness. We examine what sorts of spectra are expected to emerge when nAMSB arises from a string landscape setting: While model 2 can only be natural for a Higgs mass m h ≲ 123 GeV , model 1 can accommodate naturalness along with m h ∼ 125 GeV while still respecting LHC bounds on sparticle masses. We explore the LHC phenomenology of nAMSB models where we find that for Higgsino pair production, typically larger dilepton mass gaps arise from the soft dilepton-plus-jets signature than in models with gaugino mass unification. For wino-pair production, the higher m 3 / 2 portion of nAMSB parameter space is excluded by recent LHC bounds from gaugino pair production searches. We characterize the dominant LHC signatures arising from the remaining lower m 3 / 2 ∼ 90 – 200 TeV range of parameter space, which should be fully testable at high-luminosity LHC via EWino pair production searches. Prospects for exotic h → 4 τ decays in single and di-Higgs boson production at the LHC and future hadron colliders

We study the prospects for observing exotic decays of the Standard Model Higgs boson h into light beyond the Standard Model scalars a with mass m a ≲ m h / 2 in the single Higgs and Higgs pair production channels at the high luminosity run of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Discovery prospects for single Higgs production in the gluon-gluon fusion and vector boson fusion modes with the Higgs boson decaying via the exotic mode h → a a → 4 τ are analyzed at the HL-LHC. The projected sensitivity for exotic Higgs decays in the nonresonant Higgs pair production channel p p → h h → ( h → b b ¯ ) ( h → a a → 4 τ ) → 2 b 4 τ at the HL-LHC and a future s = 100 TeV hadron collider (FCC-hh) are also estimated. Furthermore, we study HL-LHC’s potential reach for the Higgs-strahlung process in the 2 b 4 τ channel, taking into account the contamination from nonresonant Higgs pair production. Finally, the potential reach for resonant Higgs pair production in the 2 b 4 τ channel at the HL-LHC is also explored for several choices of { m H , m a } . Our studies suggest that significant improvements over existing bounds are achievable in several production channels, motivating new dedicated searches for h → a a → 4 τ at the HL-LHC and future colliders. Magnetically collimated relativistic charge-neutral electron–positron beams from high-power lasers

In this work, we report the observation of charge-neutral MeV electron-positron beams from magnetically collimated laser-driven pair-production experiments. Relativistic pairs of electrons were generated from laser-solid interactions in an external 13-T mirror field. The pairs were subsequently confined, deflected or collimated depending on the particle energy and field strength, and measured by a magnetic particle spectrometer. Equal quantities of positrons and electrons were measured in the collimated beams with an energy around 13 MeV along the magnetic mirror axis.

Combined searches for the production of supersymmetric top quark partners in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {Te}\text {V} $

A combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton–proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13$\,\text {Te}\text {V}$ at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on the model, the combined result excludes a top squark mass up to 1325$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$ for a massless neutralino, and a neutralino mass up to 700$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$ for a top squark mass of 1150$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$. Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$, for neutralino masses from 0 to 100$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$, with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$ around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$.

Observation of $t\bar{t}$ Production in Pb+Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Top-quark pair production is observed in lead–lead (Pb+Pb) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider with the ATLAS detector. The data sample was recorded in 2015 and 2018, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 nb −1 . Events with exactly one electron and one muon and at least two jets are selected. Top-quark pair production is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.1) standard deviations. The measured top-quark pair production cross section is 𝜎 𝑡⁢$\tilde{i}$ = 3.6⁢$^{+1.0}_{−0.9}$⁢(stat)⁢ $^{+0.8}_{−0.5}$⁢(syst) μ⁢b, with a total relative uncertainty of 31%, and is consistent with theoretical predictions using a range of different nuclear parton distribution functions. The observation of this process consolidates the evidence of the existence of all quark flavors in the preequilibrium stage of the quark-gluon plasma at very high energy densities, similar to the conditions present in the early Universe.

Observation of $t\overline{t}$ production in the lepton+jets and dilepton channels in p+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper reports the observation of top-quark pair production in proton-lead collisions in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is performed using 165 nb -1 of p+Pb data collected at $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 8.16 TeV in 2016. Events are categorised in two analysis channels, consisting of either events with exactly one lepton (electron or muon) and at least four jets, or events with two opposite-charge leptons and at least two jets. In both channels at least one b-tagged jet is also required. Top-quark pair production is observed with a significance over five standard deviations in each channel. The top-quark pair production cross-section is measured to be σ $t\overline{t}$ =58.1 ± 2.0(stat.)$^{+4.8}_{-4.4}$(syst.) nb, with a total uncertainty of 9%. In addition, the nuclear modification factor is measured to be R pA = 1.090 ± 0.039(stat.)$^{+0.094}_{-0.087}$(syst.). The measurements are found to be in good agreement with theory predictions involving nuclear parton distribution functions.

Search for long-lived particles decaying to e± μ∓ ν

Long-lived particles decaying to e±μ∓ν, with masses between 7 and 50GeV/c 2 and lifetimes between 2 and 50 ps, are searched for by looking at displaced vertices containing electrons and muons of opposite charges. The search is performed using 5.4 fb -1 of p p collisions collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$=13TeV. Three mechanisms of production of long-lived particles are considered: the direct pair production from quark interactions, the pair production from the decay of a Standard-Model-like Higgs boson with a mass of 125GeV/c 2 , and the charged current production from an on-shell W boson with an additional lepton. No evidence of these long-lived states is obtained and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching fraction are set on the different production modes.

Studies of e+e- Pair Photo-Production on Proton Target at 8 GeV in the GlueX Experiment

Lepton pair production has played an important role in both nuclear and particle physics, being among the earliest calculations utilizing QED, and seen most famously in the discovery of the J= at BNL. A technique is presented for measuring the linear polarization of GeV scale photon beams through the detection of e+e? pairs photo-produced in the target. This technique is applied to the analysis of GlueX data on proton target. Simulation predicts the analyzing power for pair production to be :5725 ? 0:0025 for the GlueX data, and the analysis of experimental data gives a linear polarization of approximately 35%, in good agreement with other measurements of beam polarization. The pair production technique is complementary to other electromagnetic and hadronic measurements of beam polarization, and is generally applicable in experiments that allow for forward angle electron and positron identi?fication and tracking. To facilitate this study, a neural net was trained for e=? separation to eliminate the pion background. Further, it is demonstrated that these e+e? pairs are sensitive to the proton charge form factor, which opens up the possibility for a new method to measure the proton RMS charge radius.

Polarized QED cascades

By taking the spin and polarization of the electrons, positrons and photons into account in the strong-field QED processes of nonlinear Compton emission and pair production, we find that the growth rate of QED cascades in ultra-intense laser fields can be substantially reduced. While this means that fewer particles are produced, we also found them to be highly polarized. We further find that the high-energy tail of the particle spectra is polarized opposite to that expected from Sokolov–Ternov theory, which cannot be explained by just taking into account spin-asymmetries in the pair production process, but results significantly from 'spin-straggling'. We employ a kinetic equation approach for the electron, positron and photon distributions, each of them spin/polarization-resolved, with the QED effects of photon emission and pair production modelled by a spin/polarization dependent Boltzmann-type collision operator. For photon-seeded cascades, depending on the photon polarization, we find an excess or a shortage of particle production in the early stages of cascade development, which provides a path towards a controlled experiment. Throughout this paper we focus on rotating electric field configuration, which represent an idealized model and allows for a straightforward interpretation of the observed effects.
