Small- and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering Studies of Liquid–Liquid Phase Separation in Silicate Melts

Incongruent liquid-liquid phase separation is a common phenomenon in molten oxides, but there are few structural studies due to the high temperatures involved ca. >1600oC. In this work, we present a high-energy x-ray combined small/wide angle scattering (SAXS/WAXS) method that can directly probe non-equilibrium phase diagrams. The Porod exponent in the SAXS signal is extracted, which measures the roughness of the interface formed between different phases. Problematic volatilization of silica in Al 2 O 3 -, CaO-, and MgO-bearing silica-rich liquids were minimized using levitation, laser heating and rapid time-resolved measurements (lasting tens of seconds), to probe the kinetics of the phase separation process. The WAXS measurement simultaneously probes the local atomic structure of the liquid state and shows that the primary structural changes are associated with the SiO 2 network. Cation coordination numbers extracted from pair distribution functions support the model that the origin of phase separation in binary silicate systems is due to Coulombic repulsions between poorly screened cations. For CaO-SiO 2 , the liquid-liquid phase separation is found to correlate with a pause in the temperature dependent atomic disorder associated with SiO4 tetrahedra.

Order-Disorder Transitions in ( Ca x Sr 1 - x ) 3 Rh 4 Sn 13

The classification of structural phase transitions as displacive or order-disorder in character is usually based on spectroscopic data above the transition. Here, we use single crystal x-ray diffraction to investigate structural correlations in the quasiskutterudites, (Ca x Sr 1-x ) 3 Rh 4 Sn 13 , which have a quantum phase transition at x ~ 0.9. Three-dimensional pair distribution functions show that the amplitudes of local atomic displacements are temperature independent below the transition and persist to well above the transition, a signature of order-disorder behavior. The implications for the associated electronic transitions are discussed.

A bicarbonate-rich liquid condensed phase in non-saturated solutions in the absence of divalent cations

Bicarbonate (HCO 3 - ) and sodium (Na + )-containing solutions contain droplets of a separate, bicarbonate-rich liquid condensed phase (LCP) that have higher concentrations of HCO 3 - relative to the bulk solution in which they reside. The existence and composition of the LCP droplets has been investigated by nanoparticle tracking analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, refractive index measurements and X-ray pair distribution function analysis. The bicarbonate-rich LCP species is a previously unaccounted-for, ionic phenomenon which occurs even in solutions with solely monovalent cations. Its existence requires re-evaluation of models used to describe and model aqueous solution physicochemistry, especially those used to describe and model carbonate mineral formation.

Reversible Electrochemical Lithium Cycling in a Vanadium(IV)- and Niobium(V)-Based Wadsley–Roth Phase

Fast charging remains one of the greatest safety challenges in Li-ion batteries due to Li-dendrite growth occurring on graphite anodes if they are lithiated too quickly. The search for high-rate anodes has highlighted materials in the Wadsley–Roth (WR) shear phase family. The relative abundance of V compared with traditional WR compositions of Nb and W makes V-based phases attractive. However, the high voltage and poor reversibility typically associated with V redox have made V-rich WR phases less studied than Nb- and W-rich phases. Here, we show that a new V-rich Wadsley–Roth phase, V 7 Nb 6 O 29 , achieves excellent rate capability and 80% capacity retention after 228 cycles with a relatively low average voltage of 1.76 V vs Li/Li + compared with other V-rich WR phases. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals a P4/m space group with repeating 2 × 2 × ∞ and 3 × 3 × ∞ blocks of V 4+ and Nb 5+ octahedra. Finally, combined neutron pair distribution function analysis, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations show that V redox is the primary source of capacity and that cycling stability is provided by the stable octahedral coordination adopted by V 4+ in the material.

Short-range magnetic order and planar anisotropy in the topological ferrimagnet Mn 3 ⁢Si 2 ⁢Te 6

Mn 3 ⁢Si 2 ⁢Te 6 is a ferrimagnetic topological nodal-line semiconductor that exhibits unconventional colossal magnetoresistance behavior, with short-range spin fluctuations being potentially intimately linked to the emergent properties. Here we determine the short-range magnetic order and anisotropy through total neutron scattering and polarized neutron powder diffraction measurements on polycrystalline Mn 3 ⁢Si 2⁢ Te 6 . Strong in-plane anisotropy is quantified on the Mn ions through extraction of the local site susceptibility tensor. Here, the real-space local spin structure is determined through the application of magnetic pair distribution function analysis covering a wide temperature range. Short-range order over a locally frustrated trimer of three nearest neighbors is found to exist well above the long-range ferrimagnetic transition.

Dynamical Bond Formation in KNi 2 Se 2

Emphanisis, or the appearance out of nothing, has been used to describe the phenomena of spontaneous atom off-centering and dipole formation at elevated temperatures in lead chalcogenides. Here, we provide spectroscopic evidence of spontaneous formation of metal-metal bonds above T~50 K in the layered metal KNi 2 Se 2 . These bonds form zig-zag chains that lower the local symmetry from tetragonal to monoclinic. Energy-resolved pair distribution function measurements exclude a pure phonon origin of our observations, and instead imply the existence of extra, slowly fluctuating, Ni-Ni bonds above T=50 K. Density functional theory calculations support this lower symmetry configuration as an instability of tetragonal KNi 2 Se 2 . We thus demonstrate that the phenomena of emphansis is not limited to local electric dipole formation, but can also be driven by the formation of metal-metal bonds.

Towards scanning nanostructure X-ray microscopy

This article demonstrates spatial mapping of the local and nanoscale structure of thin film objects using spatially resolved pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction data. This is exemplified in a lab-on-chip combinatorial array of sample spots containing catalytically interesting nanoparticles deposited from liquid precursors using an ink-jet liquid-handling system. A software implementation is presented of the whole protocol, including an approach for automated data acquisition and analysis using the atomic PDF method. The protocol software can handle semi-automated data reduction, normalization and modeling, with user-defined recipes generating a comprehensive collection of metadata and analysis results. By slicing the collection using included functions, it is possible to build images of different contrast features chosen by the user, giving insights into different aspects of the local structure.

Crystallization of polarons through charge and spin ordering transitions in 1T-TaS 2

The interaction of electrons with the lattice in metals can lead to reduction of their kinetic energy to the point where they may form heavy, dressed quasiparticles—polarons. Unfortunately, polaronic lattice distortions are difficult to distinguish from more conventional charge- and spin-ordering phenomena at low temperatures. Here we present a study of local symmetry breaking of the lattice structure on the picosecond timescale in the prototype layered dichalcogenide Mott insulator 1T-TaS 2 using X-ray pair-distribution function measurements. We clearly identify symmetry-breaking polaronic lattice distortions at temperatures well above the ordered phases, and record the evolution of broken symmetry states from 915 K to 15 K. The data imply that charge ordering is driven by polaron crystallization into a Wigner crystal-like state, rather than Fermi surface nesting or conventional electron-phonon coupling. At intermediate temperatures the local lattice distortions are found to be consistent with a quantum spin liquid state.

On the Interplay between Size and Disorder in Suppressing Intercalation-Induced Phase Transitions in Pseudocapacitive Nanostructured MoS 2

Pseudocapacitors are an emerging class of energy storage materials that offer an attractive compromise between the energy density of batteries and power density of electric double-layer capacitors. Decreasing particle size and increasing surface area of battery materials is a common approach for introducing pseudocapacitive behavior and increasing power density. However, in many cases, as the crystal size is reduced, lattice disorder of unknown extent is also introduced, making it difficult to characterize the relative contribution of size and disorder to fast-charging performance. Here, in this work, a series of nanostructured MoS 2 materials are synthesized with different crystallite sizes and degrees of crystallinity to decouple the effects of size and disorder on charge/discharge kinetics. The extent and type of disorder in each material is quantified by total X-ray scattering experiments and pair distribution function analyses. Electrochemical characterization, including galvanostatic rate capability, cyclic voltammetry, and various kinetic analyses, are used to demonstrate that both decreasing particle size and introducing lattice disorder are effective strategies for increasing charge storage kinetics, and that the effects are additive. Finally, operando X-ray diffraction measurements show that both size and disorder can be used suppress first-order Li + intercalation-induced phase transitions, a key feature for enabling pseudocapacitive charge storage.

Extended q -Range X-Ray Scattering Reveals High-Resolution Structural Details of Biomacromolecules in Aqueous Solutions

Here, we communicate a feasibility study for high-resolution structural characterization of biomacromolecules in aqueous solution from X-ray scattering experiments measured over a range of scattering vectors (q) that is approximately two orders of magnitude wider than used previously for such systems. Scattering data with such an extended q-range enables the recovery of the underlying real-space atomic pair distribution function, which facilitates structure determination. We demonstrate the potential of this method for biomacromolecules using several types of cyclodextrins (CD) as model systems. We successfully identified deviations of the tilting angles for the glycosidic units in CDs in aqueous solutions relative to their values in the crystalline forms of these molecules. Such level of structural detail is inaccessible from standard small angle scattering measurements. Our results call for further exploration of ultra-wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements for biomacromolecules.

Formation and transformation of iron oxy-hydroxide precursor clusters to ferrihydrite

Iron (Fe) oxy-hydroxide minerals such as ferrihydrite (Fh) are ubiquitous in Earth-surface environments and important in biogeochemical element cycling. Recent research has suggested that their formation is preceded by the precipitation of ultrasmall (~1 nm) Keggin-like Fe oxy-hydroxide clusters. However, relatively little is understood about the structure of the precursor clusters and the impacts of pH and time on their growth and transformation to more stable phases. Here, we used a new method that involves mixed flow reactors (MFR) to synthesize these Fe oxy-hydroxide precursor clusters at pH 1.0, 1.5, 2.5, and 4.5. In situ and ex situ synchrotron scattering measurements and laboratory small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) were used to study the structure and size of Fe oxy-hydroxide clusters and their transformation products, respectively. Results show that with increasing pH, the particle size and structural order of samples increase, forming solids that resemble 2-line Fh at pH 4.5. The experimental data were compared with X-ray pair distribution functions (PDF) calculated for a range of Fe(III) oxyhydroxide clusters, including Fe 13 Keggin isomers computed previously using density functional theory (DFT), which yielded at best only partial agreement at short range (<5 Å). Aging of the clusters synthesized at pH 1.5 and 2.5 results in growth and transformation via Ostwald ripening to mixtures of goethite (Gt) and lepidocrocite (Lp). This process was inhibited by immediately reacting the early-formed clusters with phosphate (PO 4 3– ), suggesting that oxyanion surface complexes can stabilize the initial clusters by preventing growth and crystallization to more stable phases.

Determining the influence of temperature and pressure on the structural stability in a polyurea elastomer

The structural response of amorphous elastomers to applied pressure and temperature is of significant interest given their potential for blast and impact protection applications. While understanding disordered structures is often challenging, this study focuses on the ordered correlations that are present at the atomic level even in amorphous materials. This local order was characterized in polyurea elastomers with two molecular weights up to 6 GPa and ~280 °C using in situ energy dispersive X-ray diffraction at the Advanced Photon Source via total scattering techniques. The resulting structure factors and pair distribution functions indicate that the applied pressure reduced the free volume but had little effect on covalent bonds for both molecular weights. Temperature-induced order-disorder transitions that occur readily at ambient pressures within the temperature range studied here were not observed, their onset likely delayed by the limited chain mobility associated with the free volume reduction. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that total scattering offers insights into the high-pressure structure of disordered polymers that are otherwise inaccessible using more conventional X-ray scattering techniques.

Quantitative investigation of the short-range magnetic correlations in the candidate quantum spin liquid NaYbO 2

Here, we present a neutron diffraction study of NaYbO 2 , a candidate quantum spin-liquid (QSL) compound hosting a geometrically frustrated triangular lattice of magnetic Yb 3+ ions. We observe diffuse magnetic scattering that persists to at least 20 K, demonstrating the presence of short-range magnetic correlations in this system up to a relatively high-energy scale. Using a reverse Monte Carlo and magnetic pair distribution function analysis, we confirm the predominant antiferromagnetic nature of these correlations and show that the diffuse scattering data can be well described by noninteracting layers of Heisenberg or XY spins on the triangular lattice. We rule out Ising spins and short-range-ordered stripe or 120° phases as candidate ground states of NaYbO 2 . These results are consistent with a possible QSL ground state in NaYbO 2 and showcase the benefit of a combined reciprocal- and real-space analysis of materials with short-range magnetic correlations.

Local Sn Dipolar-Character Displacements behind the Low Thermal Conductivity in SnSe Thermoelectric

The local atomic structure of SnSe was characterized across its orthorhmbic-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition using x-ray pair distribution function analysis. Substantial Sn displacements with a dipolar character persist in the high symmetry high temperature phase, albeit with a symmetry different from that of the ordered displacements below the transition. The analysis implies that the transition is neither order-disorder nor displacive, but rather a complex crossover. Robust ferro-coupled SnSe intra-layer distortions suggest a ferroelectric-like instability as the driving force. Furthermore, these local symmetry-lowering Sn displacements are likely integral to the ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity mechanism in SnSe.

The Molecular Structures of Liquid and Glassy Nifedipine and Felodipine and Their Incorporation into PVP

Background: Amorphous drug formulations are commonly used to improve the solubility and bioavailability of poorly soluble molecular pharmaceuticals, yet less is known about their molecular conformations and local bonding interactions than their crystalline phases. Methods: High-energy X-ray diffraction structure factor measurements have been made on liquid and glassy nifedipine (NIF), felodipine (FEL), NIF 1:3 polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and FEL 1:3 PVP wt.% mixtures. The corresponding X-ray pair distribution functions have been interpreted using empirical potential structure refinement using different models and density functional theory conformer calculations. Results: In both NIF and FEL, the NH···O inter-molecular hydrogen bonds between the pyridyl nitrogen and ester carbonyls are found to be considerably weaker than those observed in the crystalline polymorphs. For nifedipine, it is proposed that either inter-molecular NH…ON nitro bonds are present and/or a fraction (<20%) of conformational changes, with the aryl ring flipped, occur in the liquid state. For felodipine, the models indicate significant disorder associated with the methyl and ethyl side chains in the liquid state, with the main peak intensity at 3.0 Å arising from intra-molecular Cl-Cl atom pairs. When nifedipine molecules are incorporated into PVP, our models show they possess stronger NH···O bonds to the PVP polymer than felodipine molecules, which have stronger affinity for bonding to the polymer than to other felodipine molecules. Conclusions: The amorphous forms of both NIF and FEL show much weaker hydrogen bonding than found in their crystalline phases. Liquid NIF also exhibits configurations which are not observed in the crystal phases.

High-pressure deformation of metallic glass nanoparticles

Here, the atomistic structure of metallic glasses is closely related to properties such as strength and ductility. Here, Ni 1-x B x metallic glass nanoparticles of two different sizes are compressed under quasi-hydrostatic high-pressure conditions in order to understand structural changes under stress. The structural changes in the nanoparticles were tracked using in situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction (XRD). The ambient pressure pair distribution functions generated from XRD showed that the smaller sized nanoparticles had a more compact amorphous structure with lower coordination number. XRD showed that the amorphous structure was stable up to the maximum pressures achieved. The bulk modulus of the smaller and larger sized nanoparticles was found to be 208 GPa and 178 GPa, respectively. This size-dependent high-pressure behavior was related to compositional differences between the nanoparticles. These results show that Ni 1-x B x metallic glass nanoparticles are highly stable under pressure, which could enable their use as inclusions in metal or ceramic matrix composites.

Investigation of glass-ceramic lithium thiophosphate solid electrolytes using NMR and neutron scattering

Solid-state Li batteries require solid electrolytes which have high Li+ conductivity and good chemical/mechanical compatibility with Li metal anodes and high energy cathodes. Structure/function correlations which relate local bonding to macroscopic properties are needed to guide development of new solid electrolyte materials. This study combines diffraction measurements with solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (ssNMR) and neutron pair distribution function (nPDF) analysis to probe the short-range vs. long-range structure of glass-ceramic Li 3 PS 4 -based solid electrolytes. Here, we demonstrate how different synthesis conditions (e.g., solvent selection and thermal processing) affect the resulting polyanionic network. More specifically, structures with high P coordination numbers (e.g., PS 4 3– and P 2 S 7 4– ) correlate with higher Li + mobility compared to other polyanions (e.g., (PS 3 ) n n– chains and P 2 S 6 4– ). Overall, this work demonstrates how ssNMR and nPDF can be used to draw key structure/function correlations for solid-state superionic conductors.
