Supersonic flow past oscillating airfoils including nonlinear thickness effects

A solution to second order in thickness is derived for harmonically oscillating two-dimensional airfoils in supersonic flow. For slow oscillations of an arbitrary profile, the result is found as a series including the third power of frequency. For arbitrary frequencies, the method of solution for any specific profile is indicated, and the explicit solution derived for a single wedge. Nonlinear thickness effects are found generally to reduce the torsional damping, and so enlarge the range of Mach numbers within which torsional instability is possible.

Revealing the frequency-dependent oscillations in the nonlinear terahertz response induced by the Josephson current

ABSTRACT Nonlinear responses of superconductors to intense terahertz radiation has been an active research frontier. Using terahertz pump-terahertz probe spectroscopy, we investigate the c-axis nonlinear optical response of a high-temperature superconducting cuprate. After excitation by a single-cycle terahertz pump pulse, the reflectivity of the probe pulse oscillates as the pump-probe delay is varied. Interestingly, the oscillatory central frequency scales linearly with the probe frequency, a fact widely overlooked in pump-probe experiments. By theoretically solving the nonlinear optical reflection problem on the interface, we show that our observation is well explained by the Josephson-type third-order nonlinear electrodynamics, together with the emission coefficient from inside the material into free space. The latter results in a strong enhancement of the emitted signal whose physical frequency is around the Josephson plasma edge. Our result offers a benchmark for and new insights into strong-field terahertz spectroscopy of related quantum materials.

Part 2: Oscillations of elastic systems

Problems of oscillations of linear systems are discussed, including systems with a fractional number of degrees of freedom as well as free oscillations of a cantilever in the field of centrifugal forces. Four methods of solving the problem of the action of periodic instantaneous impulses are presented. The Tacoma catastrophe is analyzed and used as an example of aeroelastic oscillations. Problems of nonlinear system oscillations include the vibration maintenance of rotation, the Sommerfeld effect, and self-oscillations of a quasi-system with dry friction.

Solar oscillations - A method for deriving nonlinear effects

The frequencies of solar oscillations are so closely spaced that nonlinear interactions among modes are probable. The rate of interaction is proportional to an integral involving the eigenfunctions of the interacting modes, which usually are known only numerically. An approximation in which the eigenfunctions are strictly sinusoidal functions of a suitably defined radial variable, and the numerical details of stellar structure are banished to a coefficient in the integrand, are here explored. The physical assumptions are the same as in the asymptotic approximation of p- or g-modes. This method should allow a general investigation as to likely nonlinear interactions and which modes may participate in such interactions. The coupling of two p-modes by possible large-scale internal magnetic fields is introduced as an anisotropic pressure response to a displacement. Pairs of modes differing in frequency by less than the fraction magnetic/thermal pressure are strongly coupled, and energy appears to oscillate slowly between the two associated spherical harmonics. Potentially, upper limits may be derived for internal magnetic fields.

Pulsatile instability in rapid directional solidification: Strongly-nonlinear analysis

In models of rapid directional solidification, non-equilibrium interfacial conditions are employed. As a result, there is an oscillatory mode of instability, as well as the steady cellular mode, found in the equilibrium model of Mullins and Sekerka. When the temperature field is decoupled from the problem, the preferred wave number for the oscillatory mode is zero, and the interface pulsates in time while remaining spatially uniform. Results from multiple scale analyses in the two limiting cases of the parameters are reported. In these limits, it is found that the instability is a bifurcation to relaxation oscillations; these nonlinear oscillations may be related to the observed microstructure that results from rapid solidification processes such as laser surface remelting.

Transformations of the perturbed two-body problem to unperturbed harmonic oscillators

Singular, nonlinear, and Liapunov unstable equations are made regular and linear through transformations that change the perturbed planar problem of two bodies into unperturbed and undamped harmonic oscillators with constant coefficients, so that the stable solution may be immediately written in terms of the new variables. The use of arbitrary and special functions for the transformations allows the systematic discussion of previously introduced and novel anomalies. For the case of the unperturbed two-body problem, it is proved that if transformations are power functions of the radial variable, only the eccentric and the true anomalies (with the corresponding transformations of the radial variable) will result in harmonic oscillators. The present method significantly reduces computation requirements in autonomous space operations.

Nonlinear model of infection wavy oscillation of COVID-19 in Japan based on diffusion kinetics

The infectious propagation of SARS-CoV-2 is continuing worldwide, and specifically, Japan is facing severe circumstances. Medical resource maintenance and action limitations remain the central measures. An analysis of long-term follow-up reports in Japan shows that the infection number follows a unique wavy oscillation, increasing and decreasing over time. However, only a few studies explain the infection wavy oscillation. This study introduces a novel nonlinear mathematical model of the new infection wavy oscillation by applying the macromolecule diffusion theory. In this model, the diffusion coefficient that depends on population density gives nonlinearity in infection propagation. As a result, our model accurately simulated infection wavy oscillations, and the infection wavy oscillation frequency and amplitude were closely linked with the recovery rate of infected individuals. In conclusion, our model provides a novel nonlinear contact infection analysis framework.

Modified Virtual Oscillator Based Operation of Grid Forming Converters with Single Voltage Sensor

Virtual oscillator based control architecture for grid forming converter with inner current control loop for additional objective accomplishments is proposed in this paper. In general, virtual oscillator is based on Lienard type of oscillator equation with a cubic nonlinearity. Virtual oscillator alone cannot accommodate unbalanced or harmonic mitigation while operating converters in grid forming mode. Therefore, to accomplish better tracking performance, incorporating the provision for nonlinear and/or unbalanced loads, an inner current control loop is utilized which is based upon Lyapunov energy function type control architecture due to its advantages. To reduce the overall cost of implementation and ensure proper phase difference in the generated voltages, the implemented virtual oscillator operates with only one voltage feedback from the point of common coupling as presented in this paper. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the overall system has been modeled in MATTLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and case studies showing the successful production of low harmonic load voltages under nonideal loading condition along with other important results are presented in this paper.
