Toward Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Neutral Pion Cross Section Measurements at ICARUS

At ICARUS and the broader Short-Baseline Neutrino Program, few neutrino interaction channels offer as much utility as those producing neutral pions, which are an important background to electron neutrino searches and provide a standard candle for calibrating the electromagnetic shower energy scale. Beyond this, measurements of neutrino-induced neutral pions offer a probe of resonant interactions that are relevant to future accelerator neutrino experiments like the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. In this document, a measurement of charged-current muon neutrino interactions in liquid argon with a single neutral pion in the final state is presented, making use of neutrino interaction events recorded with the ICARUS T600 detector at Fermilab while exposed to the Booster Neutrino Beam. Event selection is carried out with a fully-automated machine learning reconstruction framework, allowing for the extraction of single-differential cross section measurements as a function of muon and neutral pion kinematic observables.

Parametric study of mercury hollow cathode neutralizers.

A parametric investigation of mercury hollow cathode neutralizers was carried out in a bell jar over a range in bias currents up to 2 A. The parameters of particular interest were the mercury flowrate, the bias voltage, and the neutralizer cathode temperature. Three cathode orifices and several keeper geometries were tested. The bell jar tests compared well with neutralizer run with active thrusters. The effects of these parameters on the neutralizer stability and lifetime capability as well as the effects on the total thrust subsystem efficiency are discussed.

Neutral beam dose and sputtering characteristics in an ion implantation system

A technique and instrument design for calorimetric detection of the neutral atom content of a 60 keV argon ion beam. A beam sampling method is used to measure local heat flux to a small platinum wire at steady state; integration of power density profiles leads to a determination of equivalent neutral beam current. The fast neutral production occurs as a result of charge transfer processes in the region of the beam system between analyzing magnet and beam stop where the pressure remains less than .00001 torr. A description of the neutral beam detector is given in section along with a presentation of results. An elementary analysis of sputter material transport from target to substrate was performed; the analysis relates to semiconductor sputtering.

Nonlinear theory of electron neutralization waves in ions beams with dissipation

An analytical theory of nonlinear neutralization waves generated by injection of electrons from a grid in the direction of a homogeneous ion beam of uniform velocity and infinite extension is presented. The electrons are assumed to interact with the ions through the self-consistent space charge field and by strong collective interactions, while diffusion in the pressure gradient is disregarded (zero-temperature approximation). The associated nonlinear boundary-value problem is solved in closed form by means of a von Mises transformation. It is shown that the electron gas moves into the ion space in the form of a discontinuous neutralization wave, which exhibits a periodic field structure (incomplete neutralization). This periodic wave structure is damped out by intercomponent momentum transfer - i.e., after a few relaxation lengths a quasi-neutral plasma results.

Nonlinear transient neutralization theory of ion beams with dissipation

An analytical theory of nonlinear neutralization waves generated by injection of electrons from a grid in the direction of a homogeneous ion beam of uniform velocity and infinite extension is presented. The electrons are assumed to interact with the ions through the self-consistent space charge field and by strong collective interactions. The associated nonlinear boundary-value problem is solved in closed form by means of a von Mises transformation. It is shown that the electron gas moves into the ion space in the form of a discontinuous neutralization wave. This periodic wave structure is damped out by intercomponent momentum transfer, i.e., after a few relaxation lengths a quasi-neutral beam results. The relaxation scale in space agrees with neutralization experiments of rarefied ion beams, if the collective momentum transfer between the electron and ion streams is assumed to be of the Buneman type.

The position and shape of the neutral sheet at 30-earth radii distance

An examination of Explorer 34 encounters with the neutral sheet reveals a much broader arching of the neutral sheet at 30 earth radii than closer to the earth at 20 earth radii. The location of the neutral sheet hinging point in the geomagnetic equatorial plane is found to be a strong function of geomagnetic activity. For Kp less than 2 the apparent hinging distance is close to 11 earth radii. For Kp greater than 4 the apparent hinging distance is close to zero. This dependency reflects a negligible return of the neutral sheet to the solar magnetospheric equatorial plane with distance behind the earth at quiet times but reflects a rapid return at disturbed times, in addition to possible variations in the location of the hinging point in the geomagnetic equatorial plane.

An experiment to measure variations in nighttime E-region neutral concentration

An experimental procedure is demonstrated which holds promise for the nighttime measurement of ion-neutral collision frequencies or net neutral concentration in the E-region by combining incoherent scatter data with appropriate photometric measurements. Data illustrating the technique are applied to comparing relative variations in atomic oxygen concentrations (from the E-region component of the O I 5577 A emission) near 100 km to those in the net neutral concentration obtained from combined incoherent scatter data and neutral temperature data extracted from Fabry-Perot measurement of the O I 5577 A line profile.

Energy distributions of sputtered copper neutrals and ions

Direct quantitative analysis of surfaces by secondary ion mass spectrometry will depend on an understanding of the yield ratio of ions to neutrals. This ratio as a function of the energy of the sputtered particles has been obtained for a clean polycrystalline copper surface sputtered by 1000-3000 eV Ar(+). The energy distributions of both neutral and ionized copper were measured with a retarding potential analyzer using potential modulation differentiation and signal averaging. The maximum for both distributions is identical and occurs near 2.5 eV. The energy distributions of neutrals is more sharply peaked than that of the ions, presumably as a consequence of more efficient nutralization of slow escaping ions by the mobile electrons of copper. The ion-neutral ratio is compared with results from various ionization models.

X-ray and energetic neutral particle emission from Saturn's magnetosphere

A description is presented of observations of the Voyager 1 spacecraft obtained a few days before encounter of the Saturn magnetosphere in November 1980. As Voyager 1 has no special experiment onboard for X-ray and neutral particle detection, the sensitivity and directional measurements of the low energy charged particle (LECP) analyzer is used to identify the neutral radiation above the charged particle background. The LECP telescope uses a silicon detector of 96.6 micrometers thickness and 0.08 sq cm area to accumulate counts in eight separate sectors near the ecliptic plane. The existence of radiation above the detector background emanating from the vicinity of Saturn, upstream from the bow shock is shown. The excess counts are most plausibly attributed to neutral radiation, that is, X rays and/or neutral energetic particles. However, in connection with quantitative considerations the observed excess counts are probably not due to X-rays. It is concluded that charge exchange of energetic ions with satellite tori is an important loss mechanism at Saturn as well as at Jupiter.

Ion frictional heating at high latitudes and its possible use for an in situ determination of neutral thermospheric winds and temperatures

The Atmosphere Explorer C data base of ion temperature and ion drift velocities has been used to study the long recognized principle that large scale convection electric fields are responsible for substantial enhancements in the ion temperature at high latitudes. As had been indicated by various authors previously, the present study shows that there is a clear relationship between large ion velocities and ion temperature enhancements. Furthermore, with the help of a more quantitative study, it is found that, since ion heating is sensitive to the relative motion between the ion and neutral gases, the ion temperature and drift measurements can be used to extract neutral wind and neutral temperature information along the satellite track. From a study of several examples, it is concluded that the present approach can be used with varying degrees of accuracy for the diagnostic of thermospheric dynamical properties above 300 km when those properties are not measured directly. When neutral dynamical properties are measured, the approach could be used for a detailed study of the ion energy balance at high latitudes.

Neutral winds in the polar thermosphere as measured from Dynamics Explorer

Possibilities for experimental investigations related to the study of the dynamics of the thermosphere have been markedly improved by the new instrumentation deployed on the Dynamics Explorer Satellite (DE). The Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) on DE measures altitude profiles of the meridional component of the neutral wind below the spacecraft by remotely sensing the Doppler shift of the thermospheric O(1D). The Wind and Temperature Spectrometer (WATS) measures the in situ zonal component of the neutral wind by measuring the angle of arrival of the beam of neutral atoms entering the aperture to a mass spectrometer. A description is provided of data handling procedures, and the first results obtained by combining the data sets from the two instruments are presented. Acquisition and determination of neutral wind vectors from the remote (FPI) and in-situ (WATS) measurements requires careful handling of the data to ensure that the two components relate to the same volume of space.

Simplification of power electronics for ion thruster neutralizers

A need exists for less complex and lower cost ion thruster systems. Design approaches and the demonstration of neutralizer power electronics for relaxed neutralizer keeper, tip heater, and vaporizer requirements are discussed. The neutralizer circuitry is operated from a 200 to 400 V bus and demonstrates an order of magnitude reduction in parts count. Furthermore, a new technique is described for regulating tip heater power and automatically switching over to provide keeper power with only four additional components. A new design to control the flow rate of the neutralizer with one integrated circuit is also presented.

Synthesis maps of ultraviolet observations of neutral interstellar gas

Copernicus and IUE measurements of neutral hydrogen column densities have been taken for about 140 stars distributed between 10 and 3000 pc from the sun and plotted in several maps to directly yield estimates of contours of neutral hydrogen column density in the 5-500 x 10 to the 17th/sq cm range. These maps show that low column density neutral hydrogen is asymmetrically distributed around the sun with a 'hole' in the neutral hydrogen located in the third quadrant. This distribution mirrors that of nearby B stars associated with the Gould belt. The maps clearly show the directions in which observations at wavelengths less than 912 A will be most successful.

The influence of neutral winds on He(+) distributions in the equatorial ionospshere

The effects of F-region neutral winds on the distribution of He(+) in the equatorial ionosphere have been examined using a theoretical model and an observational data set. It is shown by the model that components of neutral wind in the magnetic meridian up to only 50 m/s can produce He(+) gradients in the northern and southern sectors of a flux tube that differ by more than 80 percent. This is associated with interhemisphere transport velocities of He(+) as large as 15 m/s at 800 km. A substantial latitude gradient in the He(+) distribution across the dip equator also results from the redistribution of He(+). The changes in the He(+) concentration at the dip equator and the latitude distribution of H(+) in response to different neutral wind components is determined from the model and used to construct longitude distributions of He(+) to compare with observations made at equinox. Good agreement between the calculations and observations is obtained both at the geographic and geomagnetic equators using the relationship between neutral winds, interhemispheric transport velocity and He(+) concentration derived from the model. If these relationships can be extrapolated to accommodate the different conditions expected during solstice, the He(+) distributions expected during this season can also be discussed.

Plasma waves at and near the neutral sheet

The ISEE 1 and 2 plasma wave observations in the geomagnetic tail in the vicinity of neutral sheet crossings are reported. The relevance of the plasma wave observations to the magnetic field, plasma, and energetic particle observations is considered. Broadband electrostatic noise and low frequency electromagnetic bursts are characteristic of the plasma sheet boundary layer and regions near the neutral sheet especially in the presence of strong flows, fluctuationg currents and sharp gradients in the fluxes of few keV electrons and protons. However, exactly at the neutral sheet most wave intensities decrease dramatically and this observation has important implications for theories requiring anomalous resistivity from plasma turbulence at the neutral sheet.

Neutral parcel transport in the high latitude F-region

The NCAR Thermospheric General Circulation model (TGCM) is used together with a 'post-processor' diagnostic package to analyze neutral parcel transport in the high latitude F-region. The diagnostic package includes a feature that enables individual parcels of neutral gas to be tracked by interpolation through the TGCM model grid in time and space. Various trajectories have been calculated to illustrate the predicted loci of neutral gas parcels that encounter large ion-drag forces due to the ionospheric mapping of the magnetospheric convection electric field. The trajectories, calculated for a 'steady state', diurnally reproducible run of the TGCM, show that the cusp region plays an exceedingly important regulatory or nozzle role for the overall flow pattern and has great influence on the energization of the F-region polar cap. In particular, it is found that the trajectory of a 'typical' F-region neutral gas parcel passes through the cusp region at least once and sometimes twice in a 24 hour period due to the convergent geometry of the ion convection pattern.

Generation of auroral Omega bands by shear instability of the neutral winds

Thermospheric neutral wind acceleration via ion drag in the conducting E-region of the ionosphere is greatly increased by electron precipitation associated with auroras. This increased acceleration can lead to the development of significant horizontal wind shears, which were found to be unstable to the Kelvin-Helmholtz shear instability. Numerical simulation of the neutral response to an intense, postmidnight, diffuse aurora shows tne formation of an E-region 'jet stream' within the aurora, with peak winds speeds greather than 700 m/s after one hour. It is proposed that this jet stream produces unstable Kelvin-Helmholtz waves, which can drive waves of discrete aurora along the poleward boundary of the preexisting diffuse aurora. It is suggested that such auroral waves, driven by the neutral winds, form eastward propagating waves (omega bands) occasionally observed along the poleward boundary of postmidnight diffuse auroras. It was found that neutral wind shears that develop in response to discrete auroral arcs are unstable; however, the resulting wind waves are not expected to drive significant auroral waves along discrete arcs.
