Probing atmospheric water vapor profiles via multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves

A theoretical analysis on the multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves propagating in a finite inhomogeneous medium is presented and applied to the study of wave propagation in a clear atmosphere (fine weather conditions). It is shown that the analysis offers a method of synthesizing the water vapor density profile in a clear atmosphere by measuring the resultant reflections from the density profile at several different frequencies. It is also shown that the resultant reflection emerges as the consequence of multiple scattering of partial reflections from various parts of the inhomogeneous medium. The solutions of the multiple scattering approach are shown to be more accurate than those of the WKB approach, which neglects the multiple scattering effects.

A note on multiple pure tone noise.

A theoretical investigation of multiple pure tone noise is presented. An analysis based on a two-dimensional inviscid flow model is developed to predict the generation and subsequent evolution of multiple pure tone noise from prescribed blade-to-blade nonuniformities in the rotor geometry. The results show that even small nonuniformities within manufacturing tolerances can be a significant source of multiple pure tone noise. Among the nonuniformities investigated, errors in blade spacing are less significant multiple pure tone noise sources than errors in blade stagger or blade contours.

The properties of close multiple stars

A reexamination of the properties of close multiple systems is conducted, taking into account recent numerical, analytical, and observational results. The orbital elements of 43 spectroscopic multiple systems are presented in a table. Tables with photometry data of the systems and data describing their properties are also provided. Attention is given to period ratios, mass ratios, orbital coplanarity, stability, lithium abundances and age estimates, and prospects of future observations. Numerical studies indicate that fragmentation produces binary components with mass ratios usually close to 1.0, while fission usually produces mass ratios in the range 0.1-0.5. Using analytical stability criteria, all 27 close multiple systems considered are stable if they are corotating. If they are counter-rotating, four systems are possibly unstable. However, other factors suggest that even these four are probably stable. The solar-type close multiple systems ranged in age from 100 million years to 2,000 million years.

An approximation to multiple scattering in the earth's atmosphere Almucantar radiance formulation

An empirical expression is derived to account for the molecular multiple scattering contribution to the almucantar radiance field. Formulas for the correction factors which incorporate the effects of multiple scattering and nonzero ground albedo are also given. The use and accuracy of the multiple-scattering approximation in direct problems of radiative transfer associated with almucantar radiance are discussed and illustrated by examples. It is shown that in almost all instances, inclusion of the molecular multiple-scattering contribution reduces the errors obtained with the single-scattering approximation by a factor of at least 2.

A model of human decision making in multiple process monitoring situations

Human decision making in multiple process monitoring situations is considered. It is proposed that human decision making in many multiple process monitoring situations can be modeled in terms of the human's detection of process related events and his allocation of attention among processes once he feels event have occurred. A mathematical model of human event detection and attention allocation performance in multiple process monitoring situations is developed. An assumption made in developing the model is that, in attempting to detect events, the human generates estimates of the probabilities that events have occurred. An elementary pattern recognition technique, discriminant analysis, is used to model the human's generation of these probability estimates. The performance of the model is compared to that of four subjects in a multiple process monitoring situation requiring allocation of attention among processes.

Multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves by rain

As the operating frequencies of communications systems move higher into the millimeter wave region, the effects of multiple scattering in precipitation media become more significant. In this paper, general formulations are presented for single, first-order multiple, and complete multiple scattering. Included specifically are distributions of particle size, shape, and orientation angle, as well as variation in the medium density along the direction of wave propagation. Calculations are performed for rain. It is shown that the effects of higher-order scattering are not noticeable in either attenuation or channel isolation on a dual-polarized system until frequencies of about 30 GHz are reached. The complete multiple-scattering formulation presented gives accurate results at high millimeter wave frequencies as well as including realistic medium parameter distributions. Furthermore, it is numerically efficient.

Multiple beam microwave systems for the solar power satellite

An antenna optimization technique is applied to the environmental requirements pertaining to SPS (solar power satellite) systems to create high efficiency, multiple beams from a single antenna. Effects of rectenna spacings, subarray sizing, multiple beam degradations, antenna electrical and mechanical errors, and satellite motion are investigated. Advantages of multiple beam SPS systems include operational flexibility, lower power per rectenna, fewer satellites, smaller rectennas, and adherence to a 0.01 mW/sq cm environmental guidelines for sidelobe levels. These advantages suggest multiple beam systems are attractive alternatives to the present single beam system.

Multiple-gridding of the Euler equations with an implicit scheme

The multiple-grid scheme of Ni (1981) for the solution of the unsteady Euler equations for quasi-one-dimensional transonic flow problems is analyzed according to its ability to accelerate convergence to a steady state solution, its applicability to an implicit scheme, its accuracy, and its stability limits. This scheme is applied successfully to McCormack's (1981) implicit method of solving quasi-one-dimensional transonic flow problems for CFL numbers significantly greater than unity. It is determined that the second order accuracy of this implicit method is preserved by employing the multiple gridding. However, stability limitations that are flow dependent are introduced into the implicit method by the use of the multiple-grid scheme which will curtail its use under certain flow conditions. A scaling modification for the multiple grid scheme is developed which further improves its performance when used with explicit and artificially-damped implicit methods without any increase in computational work.

Direct multiple path magnetospheric propagation - A fundamental property of nonducted VLF waves

An elongation of 20-200 ms, attributed to closely spaced multiple propagation paths between the satellite and the ground, is noted in well defined pulses observed by the ISEE 1 satellite in nonducted whistler mode signals from the Siple Station VLF transmitter. Electric field measurements show a 2 to 10 dB amplitude variation in the observed amplitude fading pattern which is also consistent with direct multiple path propagation. The results obtained for two cases, one outside and one inside the plasmapause, establish that the direct signals transmitted from the ground arrive almost simultaneously at any point in the magnetosphere along two or more closely spaced direct ray paths. It is also shown that multiple paths can be explained by assuming field-aligned irregularities, and the implications of these results for nonducted wave-particle interaction in the magnetosphere are discussed. For reasonable parameters of nonducted, multiple path propagation, a cyclotron-resonant electron will experience a wave Doppler broadening of a few tens to a few hundreds of Hz.

A cockpit-display concept for executing a multiple glide-slope approach for wake-vortex avoidance

A piloted simulation study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of utilizing a forward-looking display to provide information that would enable aircraft to rredue their in-trail separation interval, and hence increase airport capacity, through the application of multiple glide-path approach techniques. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether information could be satisfactorily provided on a head-up display (HUD) format to permit the pilot to conduct a multiple glide-slope approach while maintaining a prespecified in-trail separation interval. The tests were conducted in a motion-base cockpit simulator configured as a current-generation transport aircraft and included dynamic effects of the vortices generated by the lead aircraft. The information provided on the HUD included typical aircraft guidance information and the current and past positions of the lead aircraft. Additionally, the displayed information provided self-separation cues that allowed the pilot to maintain separation on the lead aircraft. Performance data and pilot subjective ratings and comments were obtained during the tests. The results of this study indicate that multiple glide-slope approaches, procedurally designed for vortex avoidance, are possible while maintaining pilot work load and performance within operationally acceptable limits. In general, it would seem that multiple glide-slope approaches are possible even under reduced in-trail separation conditions if the pilot is provided with adequate situational information.

Multiple Equilibria of the Barotropic Vorticity Equation on a Sphere

Multiple states of the barotropic vorticity equation in which the balance is between the first and third terms on the r.h.s. of (1) are given. Solutions of this type were also considered by Charney and Devore (1979) in their discussion of thermally, rather than topographically, forced waves. Whereas in the case of topographic forcing the multiplicity arises from what they called form-drag instability in the wave-zonal flow interaction, in the thermal forcing case the associated instability appears to be the Rossby-wave instability discussed by Lorenz (1972), and the multiple states of the highly truncated model proved to be unstable when more degrees of freedom were added. The multiple statistically steady solutions described are thus novel in that they do not involve form-drag instability, they have stable statistics in calculations with a large number of degrees of freedoms, and they occur on the sphere, with no artificial confinement in a resonant cavity. Furthermore, the solutions are obtained with no external forcing of the zonal flow. The full non-linear equations for two-dimensional non-divergent motion between smooth, rigid boundaries on a sphere were used.

Multiple incidence angle SIR-B experiment over Argentina

The Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-B), the second synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to fly aboard a shuttle, was launched on October 5, 1984. One of the primary goals of the SIR-B experiment was to use multiple incidence angle radar images to distinguish different terrain types through the use of their characteristic backscatter curves. This goal was accomplished in several locations including the Chubut Province of southern Argentina. Four descending image acquisitions were collected providing a multiple incidence angle image set. The data were first used to assess stereo-radargrammetric techniques. A digital elevation model was produced using the optimum pair of multiple incidence angle images. This model was then used to determine the local incidence angle of each picture element to generate curves of relative brightness vs. incidence angle. Secondary image products were also generated using the multi-angle data. The results of this work indicate that: (1) various forest species and various structures of a single species may be discriminated using multiple incidence angle radar imagery, and (2) it is essential to consider the variation in backscatter due to a variable incidence angle when analyzing and comparing data collected at varying frequencies and polarizations.

Real-time optical multiple object recognition and tracking system and method

The invention relates to an apparatus and associated methods for the optical recognition and tracking of multiple objects in real time. Multiple point spatial filters are employed that pre-define the objects to be recognized at run-time. The system takes the basic technology of a Vander Lugt filter and adds a hololens. The technique replaces time, space and cost-intensive digital techniques. In place of multiple objects, the system can also recognize multiple orientations of a single object. This later capability has potential for space applications where space and weight are at a premium.

Efficient multiplication algorithms over the finite fields GF(q sup m), where q equals 3,5

Finite field multiplication is central to coding theory. For this application, there is a need for a multiplication algorithm which can be realized easily on VLSI chips. A new algorithm is developed which is based on the Babylonian multiplication technique utilizing tables of squares. This algorithm is applied to the finite fields GF(q sup m), where q equals 3 and 5. It is also shown that this multiplier can be used to compute complex multiplications defined on the direct sum of two identical copies of such Galois fields.

A Methodology for Multiple Rule System Integration and Resolution Within a Singular Knowledge Base

Expert Systems which support knowledge representation by qualitative modeling techniques experience problems, when called upon to support integrated views embodying description and explanation, especially when other factors such as multiple causality, competing rule model resolution, and multiple uses of knowledge representation are included. A series of prototypes are being developed to demonstrate the feasibility of automating the process of systems engineering, design and configuration, and diagnosis and fault management. A study involves not only a generic knowledge representation; it must also support multiple views at varying levels of description and interaction between physical elements, systems, and subsystems. Moreover, it will involve models of description and explanation for each level. This multiple model feature requires the development of control methods between rule systems and heuristics on a meta-level for each expert system involved in an integrated and larger class of expert system. The broadest possible category of interacting expert systems is described along with a general methodology for the knowledge representation and control of mutually exclusive rule systems.

Multitasking for flows about multiple body configurations using the chimera grid scheme

The multitasking of a finite-difference scheme using multiple overset meshes is described. In this chimera, or multiple overset mesh approach, a multiple body configuration is mapped using a major grid about the main component of the configuration, with minor overset meshes used to map each additional component. This type of code is well suited to multitasking. Both steady and unsteady two dimensional computations are run on parallel processors on a CRAY-X/MP 48, usually with one mesh per processor. Flow field results are compared with single processor results to demonstrate the feasibility of running multiple mesh codes on parallel processors and to show the increase in efficiency.
