Self-healing magnetic nanocomposites with robust mechanical properties and high magnetic actuation potential prepared from commodity monomers via graft-from approach

Herein, we report the design, synthesis and characterization of self-healing magnetic nanocomposites prepared from readily available commodity monomers. These multi-functional materials demonstrate robust mechanical properties, with a Young's modulus of 70 MPa and over 500% extensibility. The magnetic nanocomposites also show self-healing ability, achieving 46% recovery of extensibility in 5 hours in ambient conditions while retaining high magnetic actuation with a commodity magnet.

Advances in catalytic production processes of biomass-derived vinyl monomers

Plastic industries currently source the majority of monomers from crude oil substances. Although we have witnessed a significant interest of companies in the utilization of sustainable feedstock materials for bio-based compound synthesis in the past decade, the transition to photosynthetic or chemosynthetic plant-based production in a circular carbon economy is largely slow due to complex biomass processing, costs and related reaction factors. The upgrade of the separated platform chemicals with a deeper supporting understanding of processes, models and a root–cause analysis about the underlying distribution challenges of engineered transformation mechanisms, catalyzed conversion pathways and selectivity would be beneficial to advance applied scientific development, bio-refining and manufacturing output amount. This review provides a summary, assessment and perspective for three important polymer-forming vinyl molecules, i.e. acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and styrene. These provide a backbone to produce acrylates, polystyrene, resins, rubbers, protective surface coatings, adhesives, textiles and other obtained copolymers. A succinct analytical overview on the thermo-catalytic intermediate routes for property-wise drop-in alternatives is presented. Sugars, acrolein, allyl alcohol, ethylbenzene, glycerol, 3-hydroxypropionic acid, isobutene, itaconic acid and lactic acid are considered as the main starting reactants. Catalysts span mixed metal oxides, silicates, native or impregnated zeolite frameworks (HBEA, HZSM, and MFI) and hetero-poly acids as well as homogeneous base hydroxides or platinum group metals, supported on carbon, alumina and sulfates. Finally, the article concludes with a brief state sum-up of the results, topics and opportunities for systematic future research or scaling.

Depolymerization of PET by common alkanolamines yields tunable monomers to expand the design space of 3D-printable, intrinsically self-healing polyamide-ionenes

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a ubiquitous thermoplastic used in textiles and packaging, is one of the primary contributors to plastic pollution. While PET is also one of the most recycled plastics, it has value as a rich source of chemical building blocks. When PET is depolymerized by amino alcohols (“alkanolamines”) such as monoethanolamine (MEA), terephthalamide-diol molecules are produced. In the presence of thionyl chloride (SOCl2), these diols are amenable to transformation to the corresponding dichloride monomers, which can then be polymerized via condensation methods (i.e., Menshutkin reaction) with bisimidazole compounds followed by ion-exchange to yield polyamide (PA)-ionenes with tailored structures. The PA-ionenes produced from these methods are intrinsically self-healing and possess thermal and mechanical properties which make them amenable to 3D printing. This study reports on synthetic methods and structure–property relationships in PA-ionenes that arise from the choice of molecular building blocks.

Flavonoids naringenin chalcone, naringenin, dihydrotricin, and tricin are lignin monomers in papyrus

Recent studies demonstrate that several polyphenolic compounds produced from beyond the canonical monolignol biosynthetic pathways can behave as lignin monomers, participating in radical coupling reactions and being incorporated into lignin polymers. Here, we show various classes of flavonoids, the chalconoid naringenin chalcone, the flavanones naringenin and dihydrotricin, and the flavone tricin, incorporated into the lignin polymer of papyrus (Cyperus papyrus L.) rind. These flavonoids were released from the rind lignin by Derivatization Followed by Reductive Cleavage (DFRC), a chemical degradative method that cleaves the β-ether linkages, indicating that at least a fraction of each was integrated into the lignin as β-ether-linked structures. Due to the particular structure of tricin and dihydrotricin, whose C-3' and C-5' positions at their B-rings are occupied by methoxy groups, these compounds can only be incorporated into the lignin through 4'–O–β bonds. However, naringenin chalcone and naringenin have no substituents at these positions and can therefore form additional carbon–carbon linkages, including 3'– or 5'–β linkages that form phenylcoumaran structures not susceptible to cleavage by DFRC. Furthermore, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance analysis indicated that naringenin chalcone can also form additional linkages through its conjugated double bond. The discovery expands the range of flavonoids incorporated into natural lignins, further broadens the traditional definition of lignin, and enhances the premise that any phenolic compound present at the cell wall during lignification could be oxidized and potentially integrated into the lignin structure, depending only on its chemical compatibility. This study indicates that papyrus lignin has a unique structure, as it is the only lignin known to date that integrates such a diversity of phenolic compounds from different classes of flavonoids. This discovery will open up new ways to engineer and design lignins with specific properties and for enhanced value.

FROMP-from-Monomer

This repository provides the 1D reaction-diffusion simulation engine for the multi-scale framework. It takes monomer-level kinetic and thermodynamic descriptors as inputs, approximated from quantum chemical calculations, to simulate and predict the macroscopic propagation behavior of Frontal Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization (FROMP). By solving a coupled 1D reaction-diffusion PDE system, this tool predicts front propagation speed, front temperature, and degree of conversion. The solver explicitly captures the three fundamental ROMP steps, initiator activation/inhibition, chain initiation, and propagation, while accounting for high-temperature cycloreversion as a competing pathway. The numerical implementation uses FEniCS to handle the coupled heat diffusion and reaction kinetics.

Atomistic Materials Modeling of High-Pressure Hydrogen Interactions in Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) Rubber

Elastomeric rubbers serve a vital role as sealing materials in the hydrogen storage and transport infrastructure. With applications including O-rings and hose-liners, these components are exposed to pressurized hydrogen at a range of temperatures, cycling rates, and pressure extremes. Cyclic (de)pressurization is known to degrade these materials through the process of cavitation. This readily visible failure mode occurs as a fracture or rupture of the material and is due to the oversaturated gas localizing to form gas bubbles. Computational modeling in the Hydrogen Materials Compatibility Program (H-Mat), co-led by Sandia National Laboratories and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, employs multi-scale simulation efforts to build a predictive understanding of hydrogen-induced damage in materials. Modeling efforts within the project aim to provide insight into how to formulate materials that are less sensitive to high-pressure hydrogen-induced failure. In this document, we summarize results from atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, which make predictive assessments of the effects of compositional variations in the commonly used elastomer, ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM).

Supporting Information for manuscript: “A latitudinal gradient in S/G lignin monomer ratio driven by laccase in natural poplar variants”

Lignin composition plays a crucial role in plant structural integrity and environmental adaptation. However, the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying natural variation in lignin composition remain poorly understood. This study investigates the syringyl-to-guaiacyl (S/G) lignin monomer ratio across a natural population of Populus trichocarpa spanning a latitudinal gradient along the Northwest coast of North America. By integrating biochemical, genomic, and geographic analysis, we identify key gene variants associated with S/G ratio differences. These datasets provide valuable insights into the evolutionary and functional genomics of lignin composition and serve as a resource for developing poplar variants optimized for forestry and bioenergy applications.

High Char Yield and Flowable Preceramic Resin Enabled with the Monomer Functionalized SiC Particle

Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are used in diverse high temperature applications; however, manufacturing CMCs is highly time consuming and costly. We address this challenge by introducing a methodology for fabricating CMCs using an innovative composite preceramic resin. This composite resin contains 40% mass loading of SiC particles, which are chemically functionalized with a resin monomer. The functionalization facilitates a homogenous dispersion of SiC particles within the resin matrix, resulting in high char yield (83.6%) and enhanced impregnation efficiency through reduced melt viscosity, ~10 Pa.s for relevant shear rates. This breakthrough represents a significant stride towards developing a more economically viable and efficient manufacturing process for CMCs.

Re-routing of Sugar Catabolism Provides a Better Insight Into Fungal Flexibility in Using Plant Biomass-Derived Monomers as Substrates

The filamentous ascomycete Aspergillus niger has received increasing interest as a cell factory, being able to efficiently degrade plant cell wall polysaccharides as well as having an extensive metabolism to convert the released monosaccharides into value added compounds. The pentoses D-xylose and L-arabinose are the most abundant monosaccharides in plant biomass after the hexose D-glucose, being major constituents of xylan, pectin and xyloglucan. In this study, the influence of selected pentose catabolic pathway (PCP) deletion strains on growth on plant biomass and re-routing of sugar catabolism was addressed to gain a better understanding of the flexibility of this fungus in using plant biomass-derived monomers. The transcriptome, metabolome and proteome response of three PCP mutant strains, Δ larA Δ xyrA Δ xyrB , Δ ladA Δ xdhA Δ sdhA and Δ xkiA , grown on wheat bran (WB) and sugar beet pulp (SBP), was evaluated. Our results showed that despite the absolute impact of these PCP mutations on pure pentose sugars, they are not as critical for growth of A. niger on more complex biomass substrates, such as WB and SBP. However, significant phenotypic variation was observed between the two biomass substrates, but also between the different PCP mutants. This shows that the high sugar heterogeneity of these substrates in combination with the high complexity and adaptability of the fungal sugar metabolism allow for activation of alternative strategies to support growth.
