Method and apparatus for double-sided incremental flanging

Flanges formed on sheet metal parts to increase the part stiffness or create mating surface for further assembly are created in an incremental sheet forming process using forming tool and supporting tool that move along a specified tool path so as to gradually deform a peripherally-clamped sheet metal work piece into the desired geometry. With two universal tools moving along the designed toolpath on the both sides of the part, the process is very flexible. Process time is can also be reduced by utilizing an accumulative double-sided incremental hole-flanging strategy, in which the flange is formed in only one step.

High Temperature Ternary Chloride Molten Salt Pump

This work investigates the design criteria considering thermal, structural, and mate-rial selection of a ternary chloride (MgCl2-NaCl-KCl) molten salt pump that is capable of running at temperatures above 720 °C. In this work, preliminary testing of salt-wetted hydrodynamic bearings was done to investigate different material pairings including colmonoy grades, stellite grades, and a novel NiWC-based alloy (i.e. HybrimetTM NiWC3b) used as a High Velocity Ox-ygen Fuel (HVOF) coating. The coating has shown to withstand the corrosive nature of the salt, and is additionally used to protect a 316L stainless steel pump reservoir. The pump wetted components are made of Inconel 625, and it features a carbon ring seal developed by Flows-erve flooded with a N2 gas flow on the overhead to keep salt vapors from interacting with the external ambient air. This research showcases a promising design for use in the CSP Gen 3 liquid-pathway and sets the ground for further development and use of the HybrimetTM NiWC3b as a competitive alternative to available superalloys. Further work will further characterize the pump by performance & cycle testing in molten salt at higher temperatures.

Creating a Universal PV Plug and Socket Standard

Photovoltaic connectors are designed to be quick and easy to install. Current connector qualification standards, such as UL 6703 and IEC 62852, are only intended to evaluate connectors from the same manufacturer and were recently changed to explicitly proscribe the mating of connectors from different manufacturers. Unfortunately, the industry has chosen to design connectors that will commonly connect together with those from other manufacturers. This is done to simplify installation avoiding the situations such as when the connectors on a microinverter, or other module level power electronics, do not match the connectors on the modules in the system. This rampant violation of electrical codes worldwide indicates that there is a strong desire and need to develop a universal connector standard. Here we present the initial approach and philosophy behind the formation of an IEC subgroup under TC82 WG2 looking at this problem. We intend to develop a standard where the materials and geometry of construction are specified to ensure compatibility and the design is intended to be of the highest quality. We expect that this connector will be more costly but especially in rooftop installations where power electronics requires matching components from several manufacturers, that this may still result in a net cost savings. These connectors must be of the highest quality because we wouldn’t want to develop a connector that precluded the manufacturing of a higher quality product, and because these will most commonly be used on rooftop installations where safety is more of a concern. Additionally, because we do not know which brands of connectors will be used together, we cannot simply rely on test results to ensure safety but must create a design that is as inherently safe as possible.

Hyperspectral X-ray Imaging with TES Detectors for Nanoscale Chemical Speciation Mapping

We are developing an imaging capability (“Hyperspectral X-ray Imaging”) for mapping chemical information (molecular formula, phase, oxidation state, hydration) that is based on ultra-high-resolution X-ray emission spectroscopy with large transition-edge sensor microcalorimeter arrays in the scanning electron microscope. By combining microcalorimeter arrays with hundreds of pixels, high-bandwidth microwave frequency-division multiplexing, and fast digital electronics for near real-time data processing, our goal is to enable measurements using laboratory-scale instrumentation rather than synchrotron beamlines. Our application focus here is on mapping the chemical form of uranium compounds on the nanoscale. Furthermore, we will present our approach to developing the Hyperspectral X-ray Imaging capability, progress toward a 128-pixel microwave multiplexed X-ray fluorescence instrument at LANL, and the path to high-throughput nanoscale chemical mapping.

Bandwidth and Aliasing in the Microwave SQUID Multiplexer

The microwave SQUID multiplexer (μmux) has enabled higher bandwidth or higher channel counts across a wide range of experiments in particle physics, astronomy, and spectroscopy. The large multiplexing factor coupled with recent commercial availability of microwave components and warm electronics readout systems make it an attractive candidate for systems requiring large cryogenic detector counts. Since the multiplexer is considered for both bolometric and calorimetric applications across several orders of magnitude of signal frequencies, understanding the bandwidth of the device and its interaction with readout electronics is key to appropriately designing and engineering systems. Here we discuss several important factors contributing to the bandwidth properties of μmux systems, including the intrinsic device bandwidth, interactions with warm electronics readout systems, and aliasing. Further, we present simulations and measurements of μmux devices coupled with SLAC Microresonator RF (SMuRF) tone-tracking electronics and discuss several implications for future experimental design.

Absolute Energy Measurements with Superconducting Transition-Edge Sensors for Muonic X-ray Spectroscopy at 44 keV

Superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters have great utility in X-ray applications owing to their high energy resolution, good collecting efficiency and the feasibility of being multiplexed into large arrays. In this work, we develop hard X-ray TESs to measure the absolute energies of muonic-argon (R-Ar) transition lines around 44 keV and 20 keV. TESs with sidecar absorbers of different heat capacities were fabricated and characterized for their energy resolution and calibration uncertainty. Here, we achieved similar to 1 eV absolute energy measurement accuracy at 44 keV, and < 12 eV energy resolution at 17.5 keV.

Crosstalk Effects in Microwave SQUID Multiplexed TES Bolometer Readout

Transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers are broadly used for background-limited astrophysical measurements from the far-infrared to mm-waves. Many planned future instruments require increasingly large detector arrays, but their scalability is limited by their cryogenic readout electronics. Microwave SQUID multiplexing offers a highly capable scaling solution through the use of inherently broadband circuitry, enabling readout of hundreds to thousands of channels per microwave line. As with any multiplexing technique, the channelization mechanism gives rise to electrical crosstalk which must be understood and controlled so as to not degrade the instrument sensitivity. Here, in this study, we explore implications relevant for TES bolometer array applications, focusing in particular on upcoming mm-wave observatories such as the Simons Observatory and AliCPT. We model the relative contributions of the various underlying crosstalk mechanisms, evaluate the difference between fixed-tone and tone-tracking readout systems, and discuss ways in which crosstalk nonlinearity will complicate on-sky measurements.

Topography and electrostatic interactions of electret fibres in N95 facemasks

Facemasks have been a critical line of defense in the Covid-19 pandemic and have been used for decades to reduce the inhalation of sub-micron aerosols, including bacteria, viruses and nano-materials. These facemasks leverage electrostatic charge properties of non-woven electret fibre mats to remove sub-micron aerosols. However, the topographical and electrostatic properties of these mats have not been well characterized at the nano-scale. In this study, we use atomic force microscopy (AFM) to examine the surface topography of the electret fibres within a commercial respirator fibre mat, use electrostatic force microscopy to map the electrostatic interactions emanating from these fibres, and use synchrotron X-ray scattering to probe polymer morphology. We find that within these mats the fibres exhibit significant heterogeneity in surface topography, electrostatic interactions and polypropylene phase composition. The surface topographies ranged from nano-smooth surfaces to ordered spherulitic structures. Furthermore, the electrostatic interactions varied across fibre length and circumference and are only weakly correlated with surface topographical features. Finally, we use AFM to characterize fibres after filtering a NaCl aerosol and find that the deposited particles are heterogeneous in size and distributed over the fibre surfaces.

Physics-informed heterogeneous graph neural networks for DC blocker placement

The threat of geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs) to the reliable operation of the bulk energy system has spurred the development of effective strategies for mitigating their impacts. One such approach involves placing transformer neutral blocking devices, which interrupt the path of geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) to limit their impact. The high cost of these devices and the sparsity of transformers that experience high GICs during GMD events, however, calls for a sparse placement strategy that involves high computational cost. To address this challenge, we developed a physics-informed heterogeneous graph neural network (PIHGNN) for solving the graph-based dc-blocker placement problem. Our approach combines a heterogeneous graph neural network (HGNN) with a physics-informed neural network (PINN) to capture the diverse types of nodes and edges in ac/dc networks and incorporates the physical laws of the power grid. We train the PIHGNN model using a surrogate power flow model and validate it using case studies. Results demonstrate that PIHGNN can effectively and efficiently support the deployment of GIC dc-current blockers, ensuring the continued supply of electricity to meet societal demands. Furthermore, our approach has the potential to contribute to the development of more reliable and resilient power grids capable of withstanding the growing threat that GMDs pose.

Improved plutonium and americium photon branching ratios from microcalorimeter gamma spectroscopy

Photon branching ratios are critical input data for activities such as nuclear materials protection and accounting because they allow material compositions to be extracted from measurements of gamma-ray intensities. Uncertainties in these branching ratios are often a limiting source of uncertainty in composition determination. Here, we use high statistics, high resolution - (60–70 eV full-width-at-half-maximum at 100 keV) gamma-ray spectra acquired using microcalorimeter sensors to substantially reduce the uncertainties for 11 plutonium ( 238 Pu, 239 Pu, 241 Pu) and 241 Am branching ratios important for material control and accountability and nuclear forensics in the energy range of 125 keV to 208 keV. Lastly, we show a reduction in uncertainty of over a factor of three for one branching ratio and a factor of 2–3 for four branching ratios.
