Cross‐Cultural Validation of the Binge Eating Disorder Screener‐7 ( BEDS ‐7) Across 42 Countries

ABSTRACT Objective This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Binge Eating Disorder Screener‐7 (BEDS‐7) across 42 countries and 26 languages, assessing its reliability and validity as a screening tool for binge‐eating disorder (BED) in diverse cultural contexts. Specifically, it sought to enhance early recognition of BED symptoms in primary care settings globally, contributing to a standardized framework for assessing BED. Method The International Sex Survey, a cross‐sectional online study, was conducted in 42 countries and 26 languages. A diverse community sample of 82,243 participants, aged 18 years or older, completed the BEDS‐7 and measures of sexuality, mental health, substance use, and sociodemographic characteristics. Confirmatory factor analyses and tests of measurement invariance were employed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the BEDS‐7 across languages, countries, genders, and sexual orientations. Results The BEDS‐7 demonstrated scalar factorial invariance across languages and countries, indicating consistent factor loadings and item intercepts. In contrast, the screener showed residual invariance across gender and sexual orientation groups, supporting its robustness across these demographics. Kruskal–Wallis tests revealed significant differences in BED symptoms across languages, countries, genders, and sexual orientations, with the highest BED scores observed among queer, pansexual, and gender‐diverse individuals. The BEDS‐7 also demonstrated adequate reliability (Cronbach's alpha > 0.80) and moderate criterion validity. Discussion The findings provide further evidence of the reliability and validity of the BEDS‐7 as a potential screening tool for identifying probable cases of BED globally, facilitating early intervention in primary care settings.

Stimulus-Responsive Modulation of Solvation Environments in Solid Catalysts

Liquid environments play a crucial role in the biological processes occurring in living organisms as well as in many human-made processes involving electrochemistry, photo-, and thermocatalysis. In the majority of these systems, aqueous phases are ubiquitous due to water’s natural abundance. Water molecules, however, can exert large changes in the chemical environment of catalytically active sites, altering the reaction rates, selectivity, and catalyst stability. These solvation effects induced by water molecules near catalytic sites can drastically change the energy landscape and unlock unique reaction pathways with far more favorable kinetics. In nature, living organisms couple these complex interactions with detection, communication, and actuation mechanisms to induce self-regulatory behavior, ensuring stability of the system and thus long-term durability. Extrapolating this behavior to heterogeneous catalysis is desirable because the resulting “smart materials” can potentially unlock new chemical conversion processes with higher atom efficiency, rates, and stability. The combination of polymer chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis has introduced versatile approaches for creating materials that can respond to cues in the reaction medium that alter the accessibility, intrinsic activity, and selectivity of the catalyst. To achieve this, one could combine stimulus-responsive polymers, which undergo a large volumetric phase transition in response to an external stimulus, with a solid catalyst. This chemo-mechanical response has been employed to create a variety of nanoreactor vessels with stimulus-responsive character that turn on- and off- depending on the reaction conditions. In this Account, we focus on the impact of these polymer coatings on the solvation environment around the active site and the implications of these effects on the reaction energy landscape, molecular arrangement of the solvent, electric fields at the catalyst–liquid interface, binding energy, and mobility of surface reaction intermediates. These seemingly subtle changes in solvent molecules induced by the presence of polymers can have a tremendous impact on the development of bioinspired heterogeneous catalysts, reliable chemical clocks, micro/nanoreactors, and robots. The large library of polymer chemistries offers a plethora of combinations of stimulus-responsive mechanisms (e.g., temperature, pH, light, magnetic field, solvent composition), providing the possibility of creating homeostatic catalysts à la carte.

DuctGPT: A Generative Transformer for Forward Screening of Ductile Refractory Multi-Principal Element Alloys

Designing ductile materials for extreme environments such as fusion reactors requires a deep understanding of the complex interplay between electronic structure, mechanical stability, and wide compositional space. Here, in this work, we introduce DuctGPT, a physics-informed, GPT-powered machine learning platform that enables rapid and accurate prediction of ductility across a wide range of refractory multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs). Trained on both experimental and high-fidelity computational data, DuctGPT integrates descriptors such as density of states at the Fermi level, elastic constants, and valence electron concentration to capture the fundamental mechanisms governing ductile versus brittle behavior. Using this framework, we screen over 1000 compositions in of body-centered cubic (BCC) MPEAs, including two new alloy classes, i.e., NbTa-rich (NbTa $>$ 50 at.%) NbTa-Ti-V and W-rich ($>$ 50 at.%) W-Ti-V MPEAs, to rapidly identify promising alloy compositions with enhanced ductility. Validation against experimental data confirms the model's ability to predict ductility with high fidelity and low uncertainty. By leveraging conversational AI and robust physical modeling, DuctGPT provides a blueprint for the next generation of alloy design assistants, enabling human-AI collaboration in the accelerated discovery of ductile, high-performance materials for fusion, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
