Simulation & Analysis of the Hydronic Shell Retrofit System as a Solution for Deep Energy Retrofits and Electrification of Large Multifamily Housing Communities in Cold Climate

According to the 2020 residential energy consumption survey, there are 32 million multi-family buildings in the United States, and approximately 42% of these have poor or no insulation (US EIA 2020). Electrification of buildings with heat pump is one of the key strategies to achieve the goal of 90% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in buildings by 2050 (U.S. Department of Energy 2024a). Building electrification will also enable greater penetration of variable renewable energy sources. However, replacing the natural gas dominated heating system by electrical appliance will increase the electrical load in heating dominated climate. It is crucial to well-insulate the building envelope to mitigate the stress in the grid from electrification. The hydronic shell (HS) system discussed next can achieve dual objective of envelope retrofit with space heating system electrification.

Establishing In-House Titration Capabilities: Part I. Hydroxyl Group Titration through Acetic Anhydride Acetylation

This lessons learned document provides a detailed analysis of the hydroxy termination titration methods employed for determining hydroxyl group content in various chemical samples. The primary focus is on the evaluation of techniques such as ASTM E222 and their practical applications in laboratory settings. Through examination of method selection, sample preparation, and titration execution, key insights have been identified that enhance the accuracy and reliability of results. Notable findings include the advantages of using pressure bottle methods for improved heating uniformity and reduced solvent loss, as well as the challenges associated with endpoint detection in dark-colored solutions. Recommendations for alternative sampling and titration techniques are proposed to address these challenges. This document serves as a valuable resource for enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of hydroxy termination titration methods in chemical analysis.

Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Proposed Energy Conservation Standards for Manufactured Housing

This draft environmental impact statement (EIS) analyzes the impacts related to DOE’s proposed energy conservation standards for manufactured homes. DOE’s proposed energy conservation standards are based on the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and relate to the building thermal envelope; air sealing; installation of insulation; duct sealing; heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); service hot water systems; mechanical ventilation fan efficacy; and heating and cooling equipment sizing. The draft EIS evaluates DOE’s proposed action (energy conservation standards tiered based the manufacturers retail list price), alternatives to the proposed action (including energy conservation standards tiered based on size of the manufactured home and untiered standards), and a no action alternative. The draft EIS presents analysis of impacts related to (1) energy resources; (2) air resources (including greenhouse gases, climate change, ambient air quality and indoor air quality); (3) health and safety; (4) socioeconomics; and (5) environmental justice.

Microgrid Tiered Circuits Effects for a Planned Housing Community in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico faced a double strike from hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. The resulting damage required a comprehensive rebuild of electric infrastructure. There are plans and pilot projects to rebuild with microgrids to increase resilience. This paper provides a techno-economic analysis technique and case study of a potential future community in Puerto Rico that combines probabilistic microgrid design analysis with tiered circuits in building energy modeling. Tiered circuits in buildings allow electric load reduction via remote disconnection of non-critical circuits during an emergency. When coupled to a microgrid, tiered circuitry can reduce the chances of a microgrid's storage and generation resources being depleted. The analysis technique is applied to show 1) Approximate cost savings due to a tiered circuit structure and 2) Approximate cost savings gained by simultaneously considering resilience and sustainability constraints in the microgrid optimization. The analysis technique uses a resistive capacitive thermal model with load profiles for four tiers (tier 1-3 and non-critical loads). Three analyses were conducted using: 1) open-source software called Tiered Energy in Buildings and 2) the Microgrid Design Toolkit. For a fossil fuel based microgrid 30% of the total microgrid costs of 1.18 million USD were calculated where the non-tiered case keeps all loads 99.9% available and the tiered case keeps tier 1 at 99.9%, tier 2 at 95%, tier 3 at 80% availability, with no requirement on non-critical loads. The same comparison for a sustainable microgrid showed 8% cost savings on a 5.10 million USD microgrid due to tiered circuits. The results also showed 6-7% cost savings when our analysis technique optimizes sustainability and resilience simultaneously in comparison to doing microgrid resilience analysis and renewables net present value analysis independently. Though highly specific to our case study, similar assessments using our analysis technique can elucidate value of tiered circuits and simultaneous consideration of sustainability and resilience in other locations.

Advanced Manufactured Home Case Study: A Collaboration for High-Efficiency, Affordable Housing

The introduction of Zero Energy Ready Home Manufactured Homes (ZERH MH) qualification for manufactured homes has generated significant attention and interest in the industry to employ advanced manufacturing techniques. VEIC engaged with Titan Homes to create an advanced manufactured home design that employs ZERH standards, other client-driven above-code standards, and manufacturing processes improvements. This case study identifies specific energy-efficient and quality improvement measures that were implemented to achieve certification and take advantage of incentives for home manufacturers.

Assembly and method for interchangeably holding an electrochemical substrate

An electrochemical substrate holder assembly, including: a first housing and a second housing; wherein the first housing and the second housing collectively define an interior space; a first gasket coupled to the first housing and adapted to contact a first side of a substrate; and a second gasket coupled to the second housing and adapted to contact a second side of the substrate; wherein the first gasket and the second gasket are collectively adapted to hold the substrate within the interior space. The first housing defines a first port adapted to receive a first electrical lead to electrically contact the first side of the substrate. The second housing defines a second port adapted to allow a fluid to pass there through to fluidly contact at least the second side of the substrate. The second housing is adapted to receive one or more of a second and third electrical lead.

Community-Scale AHA Go Solar Initiative and Net Zero Initiative

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is a sovereign, federally acknowledged Indian Tribe. The Tribal Council created the Akwesasne Housing Authority (AHA) by ordinance in July 1984 and has designated the AHA as its agency for purposes of administering the Tribe’s Indian Housing Block Grant under the Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act of 1996. The Go Solar project will install approximately 615 kilowatts (kW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities to serve housing related buildings on the Tribe’s reservation and use net metering programs to reduce the energy costs for AHA and Tribal members by up to $\$$4,417,501 over the life of the project. AHA will initiate four (4) net zero buildings: two (2) new net zero low-income housing buildings located at Sunrise Acres III, which include the Veterans Supportive Housing Building and the Seniors Supportive Housing building, and one (1) older, existing net zero building used by the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club (ABGC Building), and (1) Tribal Administration Building.
