Sensitivity of the NEXT experiment to Xe-124 double electron capture

Double electron capture by proton-rich nuclei is a second-order nuclear process analogous to double beta decay. Despite their similarities, the decay signature is quite different, potentially providing a new channel to measure the hypothesized neutrinoless mode of these decays. The Standard-Model-allowed two-neutrino double electron capture (2$\nu$EC EC) has been predicted for a number of isotopes, but only observed in 78 Kr, 130 Ba and, recently, 124 Xe. The sensitivity to this decay establishes a benchmark for the ultimate experimental goal, namely the potential to discover also the lepton-number-violating neutrinoless version of this process, 0$\nu$EC EC. Here we report on the current sensitivity of the NEXT-White detector to 124 Xe 2$\nu$EC EC and on the extrapolation to NEXT-100. Using simulated data for the 2$\nu$EC EC signal and real data from NEXT-White operated with 124 Xe-depleted gas as background, we define an optimal event selection that maximizes the NEXT-White sensitivity. We estimate that, for NEXT-100 operated with xenon gas isotopically enriched with 1 kg of 124 Xe and for a 5-year run, a sensitivity to the 2$\nu$EC EC half-life of 6 × 10 22 y (at 90% confidence level) or better can be reached.

Neutrinoless double β decay with light sterile neutrinos: the contact terms

We study neutrinoless double-beta decay in extensions of the Standard Model that include n right-handed neutrino singlets, with masses m s below the GeV scale. Generalizing recently developed matching methods, we determine the m s dependence of the short-range nn → pp couplings that appear to leading order in the chiral effective field theory description of neutrinoless double beta decay. We focus on two scenarios, corresponding to the minimal νSM and left-right symmetric models. We illustrate the impact of our new results in the case of the νSM, showing a significant impact on the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life when m s is in the 200–800 MeV range.

Boosting background suppression in the NEXT experiment through Richardson-Lucy deconvolution

Next-generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiments aim for half-life sensitivities of ~ 10 27 yr, requiring suppressing backgrounds to < 1 count/tonne/yr. For this, any extra background rejection handle, beyond excellent energy resolution and the use of extremely radiopure materials, is of utmost importance. The NEXT experiment exploits differences in the spatial ionization patterns of double beta decay and single-electron events to discriminate signal from background. While the former display two Bragg peak dense ionization regions at the opposite ends of the track, the latter typically have only one such feature. Thus, comparing the energies at the track extremes provides an additional rejection tool. The unique combination of the topology-based background discrimination and excellent energy resolution (1% FWHM at the Q-value of the decay) is the distinguishing feature of NEXT. Previous studies demonstrated a topological background rejection factor of ~ 5 when reconstructing electron-positron pairs in the 208Tl 1.6 MeV double escape peak (with Compton events as background), recorded in the NEXT-White demonstrator at the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc, with 72% signal efficiency. This was recently improved through the use of a deep convolutional neural network to yield a background rejection factor of ~ 10 with 65% signal efficiency. Here, we present a new reconstruction method, based on the Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm, which allows reversing the blurring induced by electron diffusion and electroluminescence light production in the NEXT TPC. The new method yields highly refined 3D images of reconstructed events, and, as a result, significantly improves the topological background discrimination. When applied to real-data 1.6 MeV e - e + pairs, it leads to a background rejection factor of 27 at 57% signal efficiency.

Sensitivity of a tonne-scale NEXT detector for neutrinoless double-beta decay searches

The Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC (NEXT) searches for the neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay of 136 Xe using high-pressure xenon gas TPCs with electroluminescent amplification. A scaled-up version of this technology with about 1 tonne of enriched xenon could reach in less than 5 years of operation a sensitivity to the half-life of 0νββ decay better than 10 27 years, improving the current limits by at least one order of magnitude. This prediction is based on a well-understood background model dominated by radiogenic sources. The detector concept presented here represents a first step on a compelling path towards sensitivity to the parameter space defined by the inverted ordering of neutrino masses, and beyond.

Latest Results from the CUORE Experiment

Abstract The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first cryogenic experiment searching for $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay that has been able to reach the one-tonne mass scale. The detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy, consists of an array of 988 $${\mathrm{TeO}}_{2}$$ TeO 2 crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. CUORE began its first physics data run in 2017 at a base temperature of about 10 mK and in April 2021 released its $$3{\mathrm{rd}}$$ 3 rd result of the search for $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β , corresponding to a tonne-year of $$\mathrm{TeO}_{2}$$ TeO 2 exposure. Demonstration of 151 Sm analysis using Trinity nuclear debris samples

Here, the long-lived fission product 151 Sm (T 1/2 ≈ 90 y) present in archived dissolved Trinity nuclear test debris samples was analyzed using liquid scintillation counting and the results were compared to the expected values based upon historical analysis results. The measured 151 Sm activities were found to agree with the expected values within experimental error. This demonstration validates the use of this technique in situations where the sample is too old for traditional shorter half-life radioactive fission product signatures such as 99 Mo (T 1/2 = 2.75 d), 97 Zr (T 1/2 = 16.7 h), 147 Nd (T 1/2 = 10.98 d), and 153 Sm (T 1/2 = 46.3 h), or too dilute for determining fissions through stable isotope ratio measurements.

Psb27, a photosystem II assembly protein, enables quenching of excess light energy during its participation in the PSII lifecycle

Photosystem II (PSII), the enzyme responsible for oxidizing water into molecular oxygen, undergoes a complex lifecycle during which multiple assembly proteins transiently bind to and depart from PSII assembly intermediate complexes. Psb27 is one such protein. It associates with the CP43 chlorophyll-binding subunit of PSII to form a Psb27-PSII sub-complex that constitutes 7–10% of the total PSII pool. Psb27 remains bound to PSII assembly intermediates and dissociates prior to the formation of fully functional PSII. In this study, we compared a series of Psb27 mutant strains in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 with varied expression levels of Psb27: wild type (WT); psb27 genetic deletion (Del27), genetically complemented psb27 (Com27); and over-expressed Psb27 (OE27). The Del27 strain demonstrated decreased non-photochemical fluorescence quenching, while the OE27 strain showed increased non-photochemical quenching and tolerance to fluctuating light conditions. Multiple flashes and fluorescence decay analysis indicated that OE27 has the least affected maximum PSII quantum yield of the mutants. OE27 also displayed a minimal impact on the half-life of the fast component of QA – reoxidation over multiple flashes, indicating robust PSII function. Further, we propose that the close association between Psb27 and CP43, and the absence of a fully functional manganese cluster in the Psb27-PSII complex create a PSII sub-population that dissipates excitation energy prior to its recruitment into the functional PSII pool. Efficient energy dissipation prevents damage to this pre-PSII pool and allows for efficient PSII repair and maturation. Participation of Psb27 in the PSII life cycle ensures high-quality PSII assembly.

Development of 52Mn Labeled Trastuzumab for Extended Time Point PET Imaging of HER2

Abstract Purpose Due to their long circulation time in the blood, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) such as trastuzumab, are usually radiolabeled with long-lived positron emitters for the development of agents for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging. Manganese-52 ( 52 Mn, t 1/2 = 5.6 d, β + = 29.6%, E(β ave ) = 242 keV) is suitable for imaging at longer time points providing a complementary technique to Zirconium-89 ( 89 Zr, t 1/2 = 3.3 d, β + = 22.7%, E(β ave ) = 396 keV)) because of its long half-life and low positron energy. To exploit these properties, we aimed to investigate suitable bifunctional chelators that could be readily conjugated to antibodies and labeled with 52 Mn under mild conditions using trastuzumab as a proof-of-concept. Procedures Trastuzumab was incubated with S-2-(4-isothiocyanatobenzyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane tetraacetic acid (p-SCN-Bn-DOTA), 1-Oxa-4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-5-S-(4-isothiocyantobenzyl)-4,7,10-triacetic acid (p-SCN-Bn-Oxo-DO3A), and 3,6,9,15-tetraazabicyclo[9.3.1] pentadeca-1(15),11,13-triene-4-S-(4-isothiocyanatobenzyl)-3,6,9-triacetic acid (p-SCN-Bn-PCTA) at a tenfold molar excess. The immunoconjugates were purified, combined with [ 52 Mn]MnCl 2 at different ratios, and the labeling efficiency was assessed by iTLC. The immunoreactive fraction of the radiocomplex was determined through a Lindmo assay. Cell studies were conducted in HER2 + (BT474) and HER2- (MDA-MB-468) cell lines followed by in vivo studies. Results Trastuzumab-Oxo-DO3A was labeled within 30 min at 37 °C with a radiochemical yield (RCY) of 90 ± 1.5% and with the highest specific activity of the chelators investigated of 16.64 MBq/nmol. The labeled compound was purified with a resulting radiochemical purity of > 98% and retained a 67 ± 1.2% immunoreactivity. DOTA and PCTA immunoconjugates resulted in < 50 ± 2.5% (RCY) with similar specific activity. Mouse serum stability studies of [ 52 Mn]Mn-Oxo-DO3A-trastuzumab showed 95% intact complex for over 5 days. Cell uptake studies showed higher uptake in HER2 + (12.51 ± 0.83% /mg) cells compared to HER2- (0.85 ± 0.10%/mg) cells. PET images of mice bearing BT474 tumors showed high tumor uptake that was consistent with the biodistribution (42.02 ± 2.16%ID/g, 14 d) compared to MDA-MB-468 tumors (2.20 ± 0.80%ID/g, 14 d). Additionally, both models exhibited low bone uptake of < 1% ID/g. Conclusion The bifunctional chelator p-SCN-Bn-Oxo-DO3A is promising for the development of 52 Mn radiopharmaceuticals as it was easily conjugated, radiolabeled at mild conditions, and illustrated stability for a prolonged duration both in vitro and in vivo . High-quality PET/CT images of [ 52 Mn]Mn-Oxo-DO3A-trastuzumab were obtained 14 d post-injection. This study illustrates the potential of [ 52 Mn]Mn-Oxo-DO3A for the evaluation of antibodies using PET imaging.

Demonstration of a Three-Dimensionally Structured Betavoltaic

In this work, we present a demonstration of a high-aspect ratio, three-dimensionally structured betavoltaic device. High-aspect ratio silicon PIN diodes were used as the semiconductor absorber and 147 PmCl 3 was used as the beta emitter. Three devices were fabricated with 147 Pm activities of 2.4 mCi, 7.4 mCi, and 29.5 mCi. The device with the highest activity produced an initial power output of 200 nW and was monitored over a period of 8 months to observe the current–voltage behavior over time, during which time the output current decreased in accordance with the radioactive half-life of 147 Pm. Small deviations in the output current of a few percent during the long-term measurement were found to be attributable to the humidity in the room where the experiment was done. Furthermore, the output current generated from the devices was 68–77% of the theoretical maximum, indicating significant infiltration of the radioisotope into the ridged structures.

HTO and selenate diffusion through compacted Na-, Na–Ca-, and Ca-montmorillonite

Radionuclide transport in smectite clay barrier systems used for nuclear waste disposal is controlled by diffusion, with adsorption significantly retarding transport rates. While a relatively minor component of spent nuclear fuel, 79 Se is a major driver of the safety case for spent fuel disposal due to its long half-life (3.3×10 5 yr) and its low adsorption to clay (K D < 10 L/kg), thus a thorough understanding of Se diffusion through clay is critical for understanding the long-term safety of spent fuel disposal systems. Through-diffusion experiments with tritiated water (HTO, conservative tracer) and Se(VI) were conducted with a well-characterized, purified montmorillonite source clay (SWy-2) under a constant ionic strength (0.1 M) and three different electrolyte compositions: Na + , Ca 2+ , and a Na + -Ca 2+ mixture at pH 6.5 in order to probe the effects of electrolyte composition and interlayer cation composition on clay microstructure, Se(VI) aqueous speciation, and ultimately diffusion. Further, the results were modeled using a reactive transport modeling approach to determine values of porosity (ε), D e (effective diffusion coefficient), and K D (distribution coefficient for adsorption). HTO diffusive flux was higher in Ca-montmorillonite (D e =1.68×10 -10 m 2 s -1 ) compared to Na-montmorillonite (De=7.83×10 -11 m 2 s -1 ). This increase in flux is likely due to a greater degree of clay layer stacking in the presence of Ca 2+ compared to Na + , which leads to larger inter-particle pores. Overall, the Se(VI) flux was much lower than the HTO flux due to anion exclusion, with Se(VI) flux following the order Ca (D e = 1.03×10 -11 m 2 s -1 ) > Na–Ca (D e = 2.12×10 -12 m 2 s -1 ) > Na (D e = 1.28×10 -12 m 2 s -1 ). These differences in Se(VI) flux are due to a combination of factors, including (1) larger accessible porosity in Ca-montmorillonite due to clay layer stacking and smaller electrostatic effects compared to Na-montmorillonite, (2) larger accessible porosity for neutral-charge CaSeO4 species which makes up 32% of aqueous Se(VI) in the pure Ca system, and (3) possibly higher Se(VI) adsorption for Ca-montmorillonite. Through a combination of experimental and modeling work, this study highlights the compounding effects that electrolyte and counterion compositions can have on radionuclide transport through clay. Diffusion models that neglect these effects are not transferable from laboratory experimental conditions to in situ repository conditions.

Study of cosmogenic activation above ground for the DarkSide-20k experiment

The activation of materials due to exposure to cosmic rays may become an important background source for experiments investigating rare event phenomena. DarkSide-20k, currently under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, is a direct detection experiment for galactic dark matter particles, using a two-phase liquid-argon Time Projection Chamber (TPC) filled with 49.7 tonnes (active mass) of Underground Argon (UAr) depleted in 39 Ar. Despite the outstanding capability of discriminating γ / β background in argon TPCs, this background must be considered because of induced dead time or accidental coincidences mimicking dark-matter signals and it is relevant for low-threshold electron-counting measurements. Here, the cosmogenic activity of relevant long-lived radioisotopes induced in the experiment has been estimated to set requirements and procedures during preparation of the experiment and to check that it is not dominant over primordial radioactivity; particular attention has been paid to the activation of the 120 t of UAr used in DarkSide-20k. Expected exposures above ground and production rates, either measured or calculated, have been considered in detail. From the simulated counting rates in the detector due to cosmogenic isotopes, it is concluded that activation in copper and stainless steel is not problematic. The activity of 39 Ar induced during extraction, purification and transport on surface is evaluated to be 2.8% of the activity measured in UAr by DarkSide-50 experiment, which used the same underground source, and thus considered acceptable. Other isotopes in the UAr such as 37 Ar and 3 H are shown not to be relevant due to short half-life and assumed purification methods.

The coordination properties and ionic radius of actinium: A 120-year-old enigma

Actinium is an elusive element with untamed properties and represents a peculiar case in the periodic table, as its isotopes are all radioactive, the longest-lived one having only a 22-year half-life, and the availability of actinium isotopes remains very low (microgram level, at best), hindering research on its compounds. Despite being a natural element discovered more than 120 years ago, and despite an increasing interest in using one of its isotopes ( 225 Ac) for highly efficient cancer therapies, the chemistry of actinium is still largely unknown relative to other elements. Since Ac is the first element of the actinide series, it is accepted that its ion, Ac 3+ , is the most voluminous trivalent cation of the periodic table. However, the structural data available on Ac 3+ compounds are scarce and have mainly been collected in the 1940-1960's, when actinide chemistry was still in its infancy, and have not been put in perspective with the advances in the chemistry of other elements, making it difficult to accurately evaluate its actual size and coordination chemistry. Here, we review progress made on the chemistry of lanthanides and actinides and reevaluate the structural data published on Ac 3+ since the era of the Manhattan Project. The data are combined across different spectroscopic and characterization methods and presented in the context of periodic trends. When considering crystallographic data, solution chemistry results, and the nuclear properties of actinium isotopes, it appears that some structural parameters ascribed to the Ac 3+ ion may have been overestimated. This review can guide researchers interested in actinide sciences and those who are pursuing the development of actinium-based radiotherapies, from isotope production to clinical trials.

Mapping Neutralizing and Immunodominant Sites on the SARS-CoV-2 Spike Receptor-Binding Domain by Structure-Guided High-Resolution Serology

We report analysis of the specificity and kinetics of neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) elicited by SARS-CoV-2 infection is crucial for understanding immune protection and identifying targets for vaccine design. In a cohort of 647 SARS-CoV-2-infected subjects, we found that both the magnitude of Ab responses to SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) and nucleoprotein and nAb titers correlate with clinical scores. The receptor-binding domain (RBD) is immunodominant and the target of 90% of the neutralizing activity present in SARS-CoV-2 immune sera. Whereas overall RBD-specific serum IgG titers waned with a half-life of 49 days, nAb titers and avidity increased over time for some individuals, consistent with affinity maturation. We structurally defined an RBD antigenic map and serologically quantified serum Abs specific for distinct RBD epitopes leading to the identification of two major receptor-binding motif antigenic sites. Our results explain the immunodominance of the receptor-binding motif and will guide the design of COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics.

Mineral-specific heterogeneous neptunium sorption onto geological repository rocks in oxic and anoxic conditions and various temperatures

Neptunium poses challenges for radioactive wastes management due to its long half-life and ingrowth from americium decay, as well as its high mobility in water in its oxidized forms. Np(V)-bearing aqueous solutions were contacted with polished and crushed gneiss and dolerite from the Yeniseisky site, Russia, which is under consideration as a location for an underground repository, both in oxic and anoxic conditions at 20 and 90 °C. Neptunium sorption on crushed gneiss and dolerite in oxic conditions at 20 °C was quite low, but increased substantially in anoxic conditions. Autoradiography on samples treated at 20 °C revealed that sorbed Np was associated mostly with dark colored iron-bearing minerals, and solvent extraction indicated partial reduction of Np(V) to Np(IV). Sorption of Np from aqueous solutions contacted with dolerite and gneiss at 90 °C was in all cases higher than at the lower temperature. Autoradiography of polished rock samples treated in anoxic conditions at 90 °C revealed that Fe-bearing minerals had 3–4 orders of magnitude more Np sorbed on them than the quartz and feldspar grains. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated this sorbed Np was present as NpO 2 . This study supports the concept that the geologic conditions present at the planned repository site will retard Np migration.

Development of a SnO 2 -based 44 Ti/ 44 Sc generator for medical applications

Towards application of 44 Sc for diagnostic nuclear medicine, a 44 Ti/ 44 Sc generator based on an inorganic resin has been evaluated. Unlike other radionuclide generators used for medical applications, the long-term retention of the parent 44 Ti is vital due to its long half life. In this work, tin dioxide (SnO 2 ), a robust inorganic-based resin, has been synthesized and used as the stationary phase for a 44 Ti/ 44 Sc generator. The sorption behavior of 44 Ti/ 44 Sc was tested on SnO 2 with varying acids, concentrations, and times. Preliminary batch study results showed >88 % 44 Ti retention to the resin at lower acid concentrations (0.05 M HNO 3 and 0.05 M HCl). A pilot generator was evaluated for a year, demonstrating 85.3 ± 2.8 % 44 Sc elution yields and 0.71 ± 0.14 % 44 Ti breakthrough in 5 M HNO 3 . Based on capacity studies, a 7.4 MBq (200 µCi) upscaled generator system was constructed for further evaluation of the SnO 2 resin stability and the efficacy of the eluted 44 Sc for radiolabeling. 44 Sc could be regularly eluted from this generator in 5 M HNO 3 with an overall average radiochemical yield 84.7 ± 9.5 %. Post-elution processing of the 44 Sc with DGA-normal resin removed all 44 Ti present and allowed for high 44 Sc-DOTA labeling yields of 94.2 ± 0.5 %. Overall, SnO 2 has been shown to be a viable material for a 44 Ti/ 44 Sc generator.

Alteration of the Cesium-137 soil profile by wild boar rooting after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

Large amounts of Cesium-137 ( 137 Cs, physical half-life ca. 30 years) were released into the environment from the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in Japan. Initially contaminants from the accident were deposited on the surface soil layers in terrestrial ecosystems, but over time vertical migration of 137 Cs has occurred, with most 137 Cs now distributed a few centimeters below the soil surface. Wild boar (Sus scrofa) rooting likely alters the distribution of contaminants in soil profiles. Such impacts may be particularly pronounced in areas contaminated from the FDNPP accident, given the increase in abundance of wild boar in these areas. Our objective was to determine whether rooting by wild boar alters the distribution of 137 Cs contamination within soil profiles through collection of soil cores from control sites and two different types of rooting samples, “new depressions” and “old depressions” within the difficult-to-return zone surrounding the FDNPP. The 137 Cs ratio [activity concentration of 137 Cs at each depth / the maximum activity concentration of 137 Cs in each core sample] rapidly decreased after reaching a peak at the control sites. However, the 137 Cs ratio at all rooted sites decreased more slowly, and 137 Cs was distributed deeper into the soil layers than control sites, across both new and old rooting sites. Moreover, the 137 Cs soil profiles varied greatly among core samples and sampling sites. Furthermore, these results demonstrate that soil disturbance from wild boar rooting can directly influence the distribution of contaminants within soil profiles. However, the extent to which deeper layers are affected by contamination depends on the unique characteristics (i.e., depth of rooting) of each wild boar rooting disturbance. Further studies are needed to examine the effects of long-term rooting on the alteration of 137 Cs in soil profiles.

Vivianite oxidation is not photocatalyzed

Vivianite is a hydrous Fe2+ phosphate mineral found in anoxic environments that plays an integral role in P cycling and environmental biogeochemistry. Imbued in the vivianite literature dating as far back as 1918 is the notion that vivianite is light-sensitive and susceptible to rapid photooxidation induced entirely by solar light. However, despite an exhaustive search, to our knowledge this conventionally accepted assumption has never been directly tested, nor has the band gap ever been measured. Resolving this question of photochemical control of vivianite redox chemistry is important for performing and interpreting experiments involving vivianite reactivity with contaminants, and potentially iron and phosphate cycling in the photic zone of aquatic systems. The present study was specifically designed to add¬ress this question. Pure synthetic vivianite samples were irradiated in aqueous suspensions with a Xe lamp at conditions mimicking the solar spectrum and compared to dark controls. Particles stirred in anoxic suspensions for up to 66 days showed no detectable oxidation irrespective of light exposure, according to colorimetric Fe2+/Fe3+ assays, micro X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. In contrast, the same experiment performed using air-equilibrated suspensions showed systematic oxidation of up to ~80% mol% Fe(II) at 66 days, but again with no detectable light exposure effect. To test for UV reactivity, further experiments on vivianite powders under air versus N2 atmosphere were performed using a Hg lamp with a longpass filter. In contrast to oxidation in air where no effect of light was detected, after 24 hrs irradiation anoxically, 0.78% Fe was oxidized compared to dark controls, and after 13 days only an additional 0.3% Fe was oxidized. The band gap of pure vivianite was measured by the Tauc method to be 3.5 eV. Contrary to previous reports, solar light has minimal impact on the oxidation of pure vivianite, insignificant in particular when compared to its relatively fast oxidation by oxygen exposure. As such, light does not need to be excluded when running typical vivianite laboratory experiments. Long-term storage of natural vivianite in museums or private collections should continue protective measures given that a possible photocatalytic role of impurities cannot yet be ruled out. Nonetheless, at all depths in natural aquatic systems it appears that the primary abiotic control on the reactivity and half-life of vivianite particles should be the dissolved oxygen concentration, not light exposure.

Statistical chronometry of Meteorites: II. Initial abundances and homogeneity of short-lived radionuclides

Astrophysical models of planet formation require accurate radiometric dating of meteoritic components by short-lived (Al-Mg, Mn-Cr, Hf-W) and long-lived (U-Pb) chronometers, to develop a timeline of such events in the solar nebula as formation of Ca-rich, Al-rich Inclusions (CAIs), chondrules, planetesimals, etc. CAIs formed mostly around a time (“t=0”) when the short-lived radionuclide 26 Al (t 1/2 = 0.72 Myr) was present and presumably homogeneously distributed at a known level we define as ( 26 Al/ 27 Al) SS = 5.23 × 10 -5 . The time of formation after t=0 of another object can be found by determining its initial ( 26 Al/ 27 Al) 0 ratio and comparing it to ( 26 Al/ 27 Al) SS . Dating of meteoritic objects using the Mn-Cr or Hf-W systems is hindered because the abundances ( 53 Mn/ 55 Mn) SS and ( 182 Hf/ 180 Hf) SS at t=0 are not known precisely. To constrain these quantities, we compile literature Al-Mg, Mn-Cr, Hf-W and Pb-Pb data for 13 achondrites and use novel statistical techniques to minimize the discrepancies between their times of formation across these systems. We find that for ( 53 Mn/ 55 Mn) SS = (7.80±0.36)×10 -6 , ( 182 Hf/ 180 Hf) SS = (10.41 ± 0.12) × 10-5, t SS = 4568.65 ± 0.10 Myr, and a 53 Mn half-life of 3.98 ± 0.22 Myr, these four free parameters make concordant 18 formation times recorded by the different systems in all six known volcanic achondrites (the quenched angrites D’Orbigny, Sahara 99555, Northwest Africa 1670; the psuedo-eucrites Asuka 881394 and Ibitira; and the basaltic achondrite Northwest Africa 7325). These parameters also make concordant the ages derived for chondrules from CB/CH achondrites, formed simultaneously in an impact. The other seven achondrites are not quite concordant, but are plutonic angrites or ‘carbonaceous achondrites’ for which simultaneous closure of the isotopic systems might not be expected. Our findings provide very strong support for homogeneity of 26 Al, 53 Mn, and 182 Hf in the solar nebula, and our approach offers a path for more precise chronometry
