Stochastic Simulation of Daily Suspended Sediment Concentration Using Multivariate Copulas

Estimation of daily suspended sediment concentration (SSC) is required for water resources and environment management. In this paper, a copula-based stochastic method was proposed for daily SSC simulation. Here, the multivariate copula function, constructed based on a bivariate copula and two bivariate conditional probability distributions, was used to model the temporal and cross dependence structures in daily SSCs. Then, the daily SSCs were generated by sampling from the multivariate conditional distribution. As a result, synthetic long-term SSCs data beyond the limited observation period can be provided for water resources managers, which plays a critical role in accurately estimating frequency and magnitude of extreme SSCs events. The proposed method was under rigorous examination by applying to a case study at Pingshan station in the Jinsha River Basin, China. Results showed that the generated daily SSC sequences not only had a high degree of accuracy in preserving the statistical characteristics of the daily SSC observations, but also captured both the temporal correlation and the cross-correlation between the daily streamflow and daily SSC. Specifically, the average daily relative error values corresponding to mean, standard deviation, skewness, lag-1 temporal correlation, and cross correlation were 0.87%, 4.24%, 7.52%, 0.51% and 2.02%, respectively. The multivariate copula framework proposed here can accurately and efficiently generate long-term daily SSC data for water resources management such as frequency analysis and risk assessment of extreme SSC events.

A workflow for automatic generation and efficient refinement of individual pressure-dependent networks

Manual chemical kinetic model construction often requires modelists to at least implicitly guess all possible decay pathways and their relative fluxes for all important species. We present a workflow and associated tool for automatic generation and re finement of pressure-dependent networks that should enable modelists to efficiently and comprehensively identify decay pathways and estimate respective parameters for chemical species. This tool combines the capabilities of the Reaction Mechanism Generator (RMG) software to generate possible reaction paths, determine thermochemistry, approximate rate coefficients and estimate frequencies with the capabilities of the Arkane software to use quantum chemical parameters to compute thermochemistry and pressure dependent rates. A flux-based algorithm is used to decide which isomers to add to the network. Isomers added to the network are reacted to form other channels. When enough of the flux is accounted for by the isomers and bimolecular product channels, the generation process terminates to yield a comprehensive network. Network sensitivity analysis is applied to the network to identify the most important wells and barriers that can be refined using quantum chemistry calculations. Iterative refinement can then be used to achieve accuracy. The comprehensive network can be easily reduced using energy and flux-based algorithms to the most important channels and isomers in the network.

Fault-tolerant grid frequency measurement algorithm during transients

Many critical electric grid operations rely on accurate grid frequency measurements. Unfortunately, the measurement accuracy can be easily undermined by power system transient faults. During a power system transient fault, the power grid voltages and currents are usually highly distorted by high-frequency components. What is worse, the power grid signals could have discontinuity during some system transient faults such as phase angle jump, and the discontinuity could result in large measurement errors to state-of-the-art grid measurement algorithms. In this study, a fault-tolerant grid frequency measurement algorithm during transients is proposed. The new algorithm consists of two stages. The first stage is a transient detector, and it can detect the occurrence of system transient faults instantaneously. The second stage is the intelligent frequency estimator, and it will adapt its measurements according to the transient detector. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated under different steady-state and transient conditions. Both dependability and security of the fault-tolerant algorithm are assessed by using PSCAD simulation data and IEEE Standard test data.

Optimality and Noise Resilience of Critical Quantum Sensing

We compare critical quantum sensing to passive quantum strategies to perform frequency estimation, in the case of single-mode quadratic Hamiltonians. We show that, while in the unitary case both strategies achieve precision scaling quadratic with the number of photons, in the presence of dissipation this is true only for critical strategies. We also establish that working at the exceptional point or beyond threshold provides suboptimal performance. This critical enhancement is due to the emergence of a transient regime in the open critical dynamics, and is invariant to temperature changes. When considering both time and system size as resources, for both strategies the precision scales linearly with the product of the total time and the number of photons, in accordance with fundamental bounds. However, we show that critical protocols outperform optimal passive strategies if preparation and measurement times are not negligible. Our results are applicable to a broad variety of critical sensors whose phenomenology can be reduced to that of a single-mode quadratic Hamiltonian, including systems described by finite-component and fully connected models.

Rare Events via Cross-Entropy Population Monte Carlo

Rare events are events that happen with very low frequency. Estimating rare event probabilities using Monte Carlo techniques is computationally expensive, often to the point of intractability, and special methods are required. Importance sampling (IS) is a well known technique that uses a proposal distribution in place of a target distribution to lower the variance of the estimator. Key to the success of IS methods is the choice of a proposal distribution, or the parameters governing the distribution. Adaptive importance sampling improves the parameters of a family or population of proposal distributions iteratively through trials. We present a novel cross-entropy population Monte Carlo algorithm, which adapts the parameters of proposals through the cross-entropy method. The proposed method stands apart from previous work in that we are not optimizing a mixture distribution. Instead, we leverage deterministic mixture weights and optimize the distributions individually through a reinterpretation of the typical derivation of the cross-entropy method. Demonstrations on rare event examples show that the algorithm can outperform existing resampling based population Monte Carlo methods, especially for higher-dimensional problems. Finally, we also demonstrate efficacy on a conjunction analysis problem.

Stabilization of electron streams in type 3 solar radio bursts

It is shown that the electron streams that give rise to Type 3 solar radio bursts are stable and will not be decelerated while propagating out of the solar corona. The stabilization mechanism depends on the parametric oscillating two stream instability. Radiation is produced near the fundamental and second harmonic of the local electron plasma frequency. Estimates of the emission at the second harmonic indicate that the wave spectra created by the oscillating two stream instability can account for the observed intensities of Type 3 bursts.

Investigation of several aspects of LANDSAT-4 data quality

Preliminary analysis of band-to-band registration in a TM scene of San Francisco, California by flickering different band pairs on the display showed no major problems. The power spectra of individual lines in each band on the A-tape of a Washington, D.C. scene, which represented data from individual detectors, was calculated. The power spectra for each detector were averaged and the peak-to-peak amplitudes were calculated as a function of frequency. Estimated system modulation transfer functions were calculated for bands 3 and 4 for a 128 x 128 pixel area of the San Francisco Bay containing the San Matteo Bridge. The shape and width of the modulation transfer functions appear reasonable, but further study is required to establish confidence in the results which yield an effective-instantaneous field of view of 33.6 meters and 40.8 meters in bands 3 and 4, respectively.

Viscous effects on transonic airfoil stability and response

Viscous effects on transonic airfoil stability and response are investigated using an integral boundary layer model coupled to the inviscid XTRAN2L transonic small disturbance code. Unsteady transonic airloads required for stability analyses are computed using a pulse transfer function analysis including viscous effects. The pulse analysis provides unsteady aerodynamic forces for a wide range of reduced frequency in a single flow field computation. Nonlinear time marching aeroelastic solutions are presented which show the effects of viscosity on airfoil response behavior and flutter. Effects of amplitude on time marching responses are demonstrated. A state space aeroelastic model employing Pade approximants to describe the unsteady airloads is used to study the effects of viscosity on transonic airfoil stability. State space dynamic pressure root loci are in good overall agreement with time marching damping and frequency estimates. Parallel sets of results with and without viscous effects reveal the effects of viscosity on transonic unsteady airloads and aeroelastic characteristics of airfoils.

Gravitational lensing in a cold dark matter universe

Gravitational lensing due to mass condensations in a biased cold dark matter (CDM) universe is investigated using the Press-Schechter (1974) theory with density fluctuation amplitudes taken from previous N-body work. Under the critical assumption that CDM haloes have small core radii, a distribution of image angular separations for high-z lensed quasars with a peak at about 1 arcsec and a half-width of a factor of about 10. Allowing for selection effects at small angular separations, this is in good agreement with the observed separations. The estimated frequency of lensing is somewhat lower than that observed, but the discrepancy can be removed by invoking amplification bias and by making a small upward adjustment to the density fluctuation amplitudes assumed in the CDM model.

Adaptive narrow-band interference rejection in a DS spread-spectrum intercept receiver using transform domain signal processing techniques

An intercept receiver which uses a transform-domain-processing filter is described. This receiver detects direct-sequence BPSK spread-spectrum signals in the presence of narrowband interference by employing adaptive narrowband interference rejection techniques. The improvement in the system performance over that of conventional detection techniques is shown by presenting the results of experimental measurements of probability of detection versus false alarm for an enhanced total power detector. Also presented are certain results corresponding to detection of the spectral lines generated at twice the carrier frequency, wherein the goal is often not just signal detection, but also carrier frequency estimation. The receiver uses one of two transform-domain-processing techniques for adaptive narrowband interference rejection. In the first technique, the narrowband interference is detected and excised in the transform domain by using an adaptive notch filter. In the second technique, the interference is suppressed using soft-limiting in the transform domain.

Doppler-corrected differential detection system

Doppler in a communication system operating with a multiple differential phase-shift-keyed format (MDPSK) creates an adverse phase shift in an incoming signal. An open loop frequency estimation is derived from a Doppler-contaminated incoming signal. Based upon the recognition that, whereas the change in phase of the received signal over a full symbol contains both the differentially encoded data and the Doppler induced phase shift, the same change in phase over half a symbol (within a given symbol interval) contains only the Doppler induced phase shift, and the Doppler effect can be estimated and removed from the incoming signal. Doppler correction occurs prior to the receiver's final output of decoded data. A multiphase system can operate with two samplings per symbol interval at no penalty in signal-to-noise ratio provided that an ideal low pass pre-detection filter is employed, and two samples, at 1/4 and 3/4 of the symbol interval T sub s, are taken and summed together prior to incoming signal data detection.
