Plasma waves excited in the upstream region by density gradient of energetic-particle streams associated with the earth's bow shock

The present study is concerned with the excitation of plasma waves at the boundaries of the streams of energetic particles which are associated with the earth's bow shock. The analysis was motivated by observational results acquired with the ISEE spacecraft (Parks et al., 1981). It is shown theoretically that the density gradient of energetic ions can only excite ion waves, whereas that of energetic electrons can excite both ion waves and Langmuir waves. This conclusion appears to be consistent with observations.

Energetic magnetosheath ions and the interplanetary magnetic field orientation

Times when energetic ions are absent and present in ISEE 1 magnetosheath plasma spectrograms are correlated with ISEE 3 IMF orientation measurements. The study indicates that when the plasma at the spacecraft is traced along a streamline to the bow shock surface, the angle between the surface normal at that point and the IMF is greater than 60 deg when the energetic ions are absent and less than 60 deg when they are present. The pattern is consistent with the ions coming from the same regions of the bow shock where intermediate and diffuse ions are found on the upstream side. The 60 deg criterion is used to draw schematic patterns of the location of energetic ions in the magnetosheath as a function of IMF orientation. Some orientations result in layers adjacent to the magnetopause and other orientations give layers adjacent to the bow shock.

Energetic ion beams at the edge of the plasma sheet - ISEE 1 observations plus a simple explanatory model

It has been found that energetic ions with energies in the range from 10 keV to 2 MeV are an important part of the geomagnetic tail particle population. A description is presented of energetic ion, three-dimensional distribution observations from ISEE 1 during 0400-2000 UT, May 3, 1978, a time when several encounters with the geomagnetic tail plasma sheet occurred. Pronounced energetic ion streaming is observed at each entry to and exit from the plasma sheet. Azimuthal gradients observed during these times indicate that this streaming occurs within two gyroradii of the plasma sheet edge. Streaming characteristics show both narrow and broad angular flows at arbitrary angles to B. These flows are observed simultaneously and individually. The time, energy, and pitch angle evolution of the ion fluxes show that ISEE 1 is encountering a dynamic and not a static equilibrium situation at the edge of the plasma sheet.

Energetic electrons in the magnetosheath and upstream of the bow shock

Four years of data gathered by the IMP 8 electron/isotope spectrometer are used in a study of the characteristics and transport of electrons of more than 200 keV, both upstream of the earth's bow shock and in the outer magnetosheath. With the aid of a new coordinate system, it is shown that (1) the upstream electron bursts are most often seen on interplanetary field lines which trace to the inner magnetosheath, and (2) the total energy transported sunward by the electrons averages about 1.6 x 10 to the 14th ergs/sec. This figure is comparable to the tailward energy flow observed in the permanent layer of energetic electrons adjacent to the magnetopause. The net flow of energetic electrons in the magnetosheath is toward the shock, and nearly equals the net flow away from the shock in the adjacent upstream region. The energetic electrons studied appear to be closely related, and may have a common origin in either the inner magnetosheath or the magnetosphere.

Energetic protons, alpha particles, and electrons in magnetic flux transfer events

Energetic proton, alpha particle, and electron data are presented for two magnetopause crossings, which show magnetic field signatures characteristic of flux transfer events (FTEs). Energetic proton and alpha particles are observed streaming along the magnetic field within the magnetosheath in all events showing magnetic signatures characteristic of the FTEs. Flux ratios as high as about 180 parallel and antiparallel to the magnetic field are observed, which means that ions of about 30 keV per charge are at times streaming almost scatter-free from the magnetopause into the magnetosheath. Energetic ion bursts with signatures equal to those observed in FTEs are reduced by more than an order of magnitude as compared to the trapped particle flux.

Unusual structure of the dayside low-latitude magnetopause energetic electron layer

An analysis of high time resolution energetic electron data from an ISEE 1 spacecraft crossing of the magnetopause on Nov. 6, 1977 is presented. Low-energy proton measurements were taken with an ultralow energy and charge analyzer and energetic electron measurements were made with an ultralow energy wide-angle telescope (ULEWAT). Electrons were observed in four rate channels between 75 and 1300 keV and particle angular distributions are provided. The ecliptic was scanned by the particle angular detector as the spacecraft rotated at 19.7 rpm. Trapped energetic electrons were found to drift from dusk to dawn by way of the midnight sector. The electrons which started at midnight met the magnetopause at the dawnside, were entrained on the field lines, and resulted in a filamentary small-scale structure. A diffusion time scale across the magnetosheath was determined to be a few seconds, and electrons diffused tailward or into the interplanetary medium

Transport of energetic electrons in a fully ionized hydrogen plasma

A Monte Carlo method for calculating energetic electron transport in a plasma is presented. The energy loss and angular deflection due to Coulomb collisions as a function of travel distance and energy are derived for energetic electrons in a fully ionized plasma with a uniform magnetic field. Formulas which include the effect of nonuniform B fields on the angular deflection are derived. The Monte Carlo method is applied to the thick-target beam model in which the energetic electrons are injected vertically downward.

Energetic ion losses near Io's orbit

The interactions between Io and the Jovian particle population have been of considerable interest ever since the discovery that Io modulates Jupiter's decametric radiation. Voyager 1 observations established that a plasma torus around Io dominates the mass and energy budgets of the Jovian magnetosphere. This torus must then play a central role in the particle loss process around Io. The present investigation provides a picture for particle transport and energetic ion losses near Io's orbit which considers both low energy plasma data and energetic ion data. The approximate match between the energy needed to power the Jovian UV aurora and the 'missing' energy of the low energy charged particle (LECP) measured ions is consistent with the concept that significant precipitation of energetic ions into the Jovian atmosphere can maintain the Jovian aurora.

Energetic particles in the vicinity of a possible neutral line in the plasma sheet

Combined plasma, magnetic field, and energetic particle data obtained from ISEE-1 in the geomagnetic tail during two successive energetic particle burst events are presented. The behavior of protons with energies of more than about 100 keV is very different from that of the 30-100 keV protons which represent the suprathermal tail of the plasma sheet distribution. The more energetic ions appear on a time scale of several minutes following a northward turning of the tail magnetic field. At about the same time the plasma measurements show a velocity of about 200 km/s in the tailward direction. From these results, it is argued that two successive magnetic neutral lines are created well within the plasma sheet and move close to the satellite position in the earthward direction. The extent of the neutral line is then limited to the dusk side of the tail.

Electron density and energetic particle precipitation observed during the eclipse of 26 February 1979

Electron density profiles and energetic particle fluxes are obtained based on data collected by two rockets launched from Red Lake, Ontario, respectively, at the beginning and end of totality during the solar eclipse of February 26, 1979. Data obtained by a rocket launched on February 24, 1979 showed that the electron density was normal (at 10,000 cu cm) above 110 km, to rocket apogee (130.5 km). Below 110 km, the electron density was found to be enhanced compared with data from Wallops Island at the same solar zenith angle (63 deg). It is proposed that this enhancement was due to the large flux of field-aligned energetic particles observed on the same rocket. The electron density above 110 km to rocket apogee (132.6 and 132. 3 km) was found to be reduced during totality by a factor of about three. However, below 110 km, the electron density was found to be much greater than observed during previous eclipses, probably due to the additional ionization resulting from energetic particles. The particle flux measured on February 26 was found to be an order of magnitude less than on February 24 but showed greater variability, particularly at the higher energies (100 keV).

Energetics analysis of the global circulation during the special observation periods of FGGE

A global energetics analysis is presented for the FGGE SOP-1 and SOP-2 with ECMWF and GFDL data sets. Both global integral properties and spectral characteristics are examined. There is a large discrepancy between the present FGGE analysis and previously available estimates concerning the level of available potential energy and kinetic energy. This discrepancy is attributable to an earlier restriction of data coverage. There is a significant seasonal difference in the energy reservoir of the Northern Hemisphere, whereas the diference is minor in the Southern Hemisphere. This leads to a seasonal contrast of the globally integrated energy budget which comes mostly from the Northern Hemisphere. Both the global energy level and the intensity of the general circulation are more pronounced during SOP-1 than during SOP-2. One major focus of attention in this study is an energetics comparison of ECMWF and GFDL data sets. There is a twofold difference in the intensity of the general circulation as measured with these two data sets. The energetics diagnosis indicates that the operational modes of the general circulation as described by these two data sets also differ considerably. The contrasts between SOP-1 and SOP-2 and between the ECMWF and GFDL versions of the data sets are apparent in the pattern of energy flow in the wavenumber domain.

Energetic particle transport in the upstream region of Jupiter - Voyager results

Using Voyager 1 and 2 energetic (greater than 30 keV) ion measurements near the magnetopause, in the magnetosheath, and immediately upstream of the Jovian bow shock, the available ion compositional patterns have been examined together with typical energy spectra in each of these regions. Field-aligned, highly anisotropic ion bursts occurring early in most upstream events have relatively low fluxes of electrons and heavy ions associated with them. Characteristic spectral changes are found late in long-lived ion events at the same time that heavy ion and energetic electron fluxes are enhanced. The interplanetary magnetic field is always connected toward the dawn side of the planet late in this subset of upstream events, at the time that relativistic electrons and heavy ions are high. A model emphasizing energetic particle escape in the prenoon part of the Jovian magnetosphere, late in events, is presented to explain many of the upstream region features.

Direct determination of the ionic charge distribution of helium and iron in He-3-rich solar energetic particle events

The first direct measurement of the ionic charge distribution of the helium isotopes and of iron in (He-3)-Fe-rich solar energetic particle events is reported. No significant contribution of singly ionized helium to the events is found. The two-sigma upper limits for the He-3(+)/He-3(2+) and He-4(+)/He-4(2+) ratios are 0.02 and 0.03, respectively. The mean charge state of iron found by averaging five (He-3)-Fe-rich solar energetic particle events is 19 + or -2, significantly larger than the iron charge state for energetic solar particles in normal composition events. These results appear to favor the resonant heating model proposed by Fisk (1978). It is concluded that temperatures in the source region exceed 5 million K in the events under study.

Plasma and energetic particle structure upstream of a quasi-parallel interplanetary shock

ISEE 1, 2 and 3 data from 1978 on interplanetary magnetic fields, shock waves and particle energetics are examined to characterize a quasi-parallel shock. The intense shock studied exhibited a 640 km/sec velocity. The data covered 1-147 keV protons and electrons and ions with energies exceeding 30 keV in regions both upstream and downstream of the shock, and also the magnitudes of ion-acoustic and MHD waves. The energetic particles and MHD waves began being detected 5 hr before the shock. Intense halo electron fluxes appeared ahead of the shock. A closed magnetic field structure was produced with a front end 700 earth radii from the shock. The energetic protons were cut off from the interior of the magnetic bubble, which contained a markedly increased density of 2-6 keV protons as well as the shock itself.

Energetic particle sounding at the magnetopause and implications for magnetic reconnection

Measurements of energetic particle three dimensional distributions used to infer the structure of the region of the subsolar magnetopause obtained from the Medium Energy Particle Experiment onboard the ISEE-1 and 2 satellites are reviewed. Although initial interpretations of two types of energetic particle signatures argued against the topology predicted by magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause, subsequent understanding of the meaning of these observations demonstrate that the energetic particle data are uniformly consistent with the theory.

Ionization states of helium in He-3-rich solar energetic particle events

Results of a systematic study of the ionic charge state of helium in the energy range 0.6-1.0 MeV/nucleon for He-3-rich solar energetic particle events during the time period August 1978 to October 1979 are reported. The data have been obtained with the Max-Planck-Institut/University of Maryland experiment on ISEE-3. Whereas for solar energetic particle events with no enrichment of He-3 relative to He-4 surprisingly large abundances of singly ionized helium have been reported recently, He-3-rich solar energetic particle events do not show significant abundances of He-3(+). This result is consistent with current theories explaining large compositional anomalies by mass per charge dependent selective heating of the minor ion species.

Multispacecraft observations of the east-west asymmetry of solar energetic storm particle events

Energetic proton observations have been obtained by instruments aboard the IMP-7 and -8 spacecraft and Voyager-1 and -2 deep space probes, in order to study the generation of solar flare Energetic Storm Particle Events (ESP) events at widely separated locations on the same shock front which are presumably characterized, on average, by different IMF shock front configurations for solar flare sites. Energetic proton observations indicate that substantial differences in the ESP proton intensity enhancements are detected at these energies for locations on the shock front with wide heliolongitude separations. The present results indicate that acceleration of ESP protons to more than 500 keV takes place at the quasi-perpendicular shock front domain, consistent with the 'shock drift' acceleration mechanism.

A comparison study of spectral energetics analysis using varius FGGE 3b data

The atmospheric spectral energetics studies performed before the First GARP Global Experiment (FGGE) were reviewed, and the deficiencies of these studies were pointed out. The data generated by the FGGE IIIb analyses of the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts, the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, and the Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences over the entire globe during the FGGE summer and winter are used to analyze the atmospheric spectral energetics. Comparisons were made between the results using three FGGE IIIb analyses, and between previous and current studies with the spectral energetics of the Southern Hemisphere.
