Optical modulator system

The fabrication, test, and delivery of an optical modulator system which will operate with a mode-locked Nd:YAG laser indicating at either 1.06 or 0.53 micrometers is discussed. The delivered hardware operates at data rates up to 400 Mbps and includes a 0.53 micrometer electrooptic modulator, a 1.06 micrometer electrooptic modulator with power supply and signal processing electronics with power supply. The modulators contain solid state drivers which accept digital signals with MECL logic levels, temperature controllers to maintain a stable thermal environment for the modulator crystals, and automatic electronic compensation to maximize the extinction ratio. The modulators use two lithium tantalate crystals cascaded in a double pass configuration. The signal processing electronics include encoding electronics which are capable of digitizing analog signals between the limit of + or - 0.75 volts at a maximum rate of 80 megasamples per second with 5 bit resolution. The digital samples are serialized and made available as a 400 Mbps serial NRZ data source for the modulators. A pseudorandom (PN) generator is also included in the signal processing electronics. This data source generates PN sequences with lengths between 31 bits and 32,767 bits in a serial NRZ format at rates up to 400 Mbps.

A Diamond Electron Tunneling Micro-Electromechanical Sensor

A new pressure sensing device using field emission from diamond coated silicon tips has been developed. A high electric field applied between a nano-tip array and a diaphragm configured as electrodes produces electron emission governed by the Fowler Nordheim equation. The electron emission is very sensitive to the separation between the diaphragm and the tips, which is fixed at an initial spacing and bonded such that a cavity is created between them. Pressure applied to the diaphragm decreases the spacing between the electrodes, thereby increasing the number of electrons emitted. Silicon has been used as a substrate on which arrays of diamond coated sharp tips have been fabricated for electron emission. Also, a diaphragm has been made using wet orientation dependent etching. These two structures were bonded together using epoxy and tested. Current - voltage measurements were made at varying pressures for 1-5 V biasing conditions. The sensitivity was found to be 2.13 mV/V/psi for a 20 x 20 array, which is comparable to that of silicon piezoresistive transducers. Thinner diaphragms as well as alternative methods of bonding are expected to improve the electrical characteristics of the device. This transducer will find applications in many engineering fields for pressure measurement.

Theoretical Study of Decomposition Pathways for HArF and HKrF

To provide theoretical insights into the stability and dynamics of the new rare gas compounds HArF and HKrF, reaction paths for decomposition processes HRgF to Rg + HF and HRgF to H + Rg + F (Rg = Ar, Kr) are calculated using ab initio electronic structure methods. The bending channels, HRgF to Rg + HF, are described by single-configurational MP2 and CCSD(T) electronic structure methods, while the linear decomposition paths, HRgF to H + Rg + F, require the use of multi-configurational wave functions that include dynamic correlation and are size extensive. HArF and HKrF molecules are found to be energetically stable with respect to atomic dissociation products (H + Rg + F) and separated by substantial energy barriers from Rg + HF products, which ensure their kinetic stability. The results are compatible with experimental data on these systems.

Electronic and vibrational spectra of matrix isolated anthracene radical cations - Experimental and theoretical aspects

The IR vibrational and visible/UV electronic absorption spectra of the anthracene cation, An(+), were studied experimentally, in argon matrices at 12 K, as well as theoretically, using ab initio calculations for the vibrational modes and enhanced semiempirical methods with configuration interaction for the electronic spectra. It was found that both approaches predicted well the observed photoelectron spectrum. The theoretical IR intensities showed some remarkable differences between neutral and ionized species (for example, the CH in-plane bending modes and CC in-plane stretching vibrations were predicted to increase by several orders of magnitude upon ionization). Likewise, estimated experimental IR intensities showed a significant increase in the cation band intensities over the neutrals. The implication of these findings for the hypothesis that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon cations are responsible for the unidentified IR emission bands from interstellar space is discussed.

Density sensitive X-ray line ratios in the Be I, B I, and Ne I isoelectronic sequences

The intensities of X-ray transitions in highly charged ions in the Be I, B I, and Ne I isoelectronic sequences have been calculated as functions of electron density. The intensities of the transitions from the 2s(n)2p(m)3p configuration, relative to the intensities from the 2s(n)2p(m)3s and 2s(n)p(m)3d configurations, are strong functions of electron density in high-density plasmas. The density sensitivity occurs at electron densities between 10 to the 16th/cu cm (for Si ions) and 10 to the 22nd/cu cm (for Kr ions). Opacity is unimportant for plasma dimensions that are characteristic of dense laser-produced plasmas. These X-ray line ratios represent a promising new density diagnostic for high-density plasmas.

Effects of checklist interface on non-verbal crew communications

The investigation looked at the effects of the spatial layout and functionality of cockpit displays and controls on crew communication. Specifically, the study focused on the intra-cockpit crew interaction, and subsequent task performance, of airline pilots flying different configurations of a new electronic checklist, designed and tested in a high-fidelity simulator at NASA Ames Research Center. The first part of this proposal establishes the theoretical background for the assumptions underlying the research, suggesting that in the context of the interaction between a multi-operator crew and a machine, the design and configuration of the interface will affect interactions between individual operators and the machine, and subsequently, the interaction between operators. In view of the latest trends in cockpit interface design and flight-deck technology, in particular, the centralization of displays and controls, the introduction identifies certain problems associated with these modern designs and suggests specific design issues to which the expected results could be applied. A detailed research program and methodology is outlined and the results are described and discussed. Overall, differences in cockpit design were shown to impact the activity within the cockpit, including interactions between pilots and aircraft and the cooperative interactions between pilots.

Theoretical Studies of Chemical Reactions following Electronic Excitation

The use of multi-configurational wave functions is demonstrated for several processes: tautomerization reactions in the ground and excited states of the DNA base adenine, dissociation of glycine molecule after electronic excitation, and decomposition/deformation of novel rare gas molecules HRgF. These processes involve bond brealung/formation and require multi-configurational approaches that include dynamic correlation.

Effective core potentials for the cadmium and mercury atoms

Ab initio effective core potentials have been obtained for the cadmium and mercury atoms by the methods of Kahn et al. (1976). Both two and twelve valence electron representations of Cd and Hg were tested for various atom state-configurations by comparison with all-electron calculations. The generated potentials were used to obtain the equilibrium bond distances and molecular binding energies for the dichloride and dimethyl compounds of both atoms from single and optimum-double configuration self-consistent field calculations.

Automated plotting of equipotentials

By substitution of resistance paper for normal plotting paper, an x-y plotter can be used to draw automatically the equipotential lines between components represented in planar form on the paper. This technique is used for high voltage electronic components of complex configuration for the prediction of stress in the intervening insulation.

Charging characteristics of silica fabrics

The charge dissipation mechanism of silica fabrics and silica fabric/Aluminum composites was studied by means of various sample configurations tested under monoenergetic electron beams at energies between 5 and 20 keV. Grounding of the aluminum rear face of the composite is necessary in order to ensure a good electrostatic performance. The surface potentials are dependent on the flux rate in the range 10 pA -cm(2-) to 3 nA cm(-2); they are the highest at the lowest flux rate. Strong discharges have been evidenced at 20 keV but do not occur under 15 keV electrons. A substantial decrease in the surface potential of the sample is observed every time that an irradiation by low energy electrons ( 2 to 4 keV) is performed simultaneously with the irradiation by medium-energy electrons (10 to 20 keV). Silica fabrics and composites are very sensitive of contamination or contamination-plus-irradiation effects.

The equation of state for stellar envelopes. II - Algorithm and selected results

A free-energy-minimization method for computing the dissociation and ionization equilibrium of a multicomponent gas is discussed. The adopted free energy includes terms representing the translational free energy of atoms, ions, and molecules; the internal free energy of particles with excited states; the free energy of a partially degenerate electron gas; and the configurational free energy from shielded Coulomb interactions among charged particles. Internal partition functions are truncated using an occupation probability formalism that accounts for perturbations of bound states by both neutral and charged perturbers. The entire theory is analytical and differentiable to all orders, so it is possible to write explicit analytical formulas for all derivatives required in a Newton-Raphson iteration; these are presented to facilitate future work. Some representative results for both Saha and free-energy-minimization equilibria are presented for a hydrogen-helium plasma with N(He)/N(H) = 0.10. These illustrate nicely the phenomena of pressure dissociation and ionization, and also demonstrate vividly the importance of choosing a reliable cutoff procedure for internal partition functions.

Hot plasma and energetic particles in Neptune's magnetosphere

Voyager 2's low energy charged particle instrument employed an array of solid-state detectors in various configurations to measure energetic electrons and ions within the Neptune magnetosphere in several energy channels. Various features of the intensity, spectral, and anisotropic data obtained suggest that the Triton satellite exerts an important controlling influence over the outer regions of the Neptunian magnetosphere. Composition measurements have indicated the presence of H, H2, and He-4 at 1300:1:0.1 relative abundances, respectively, suggesting a Neptunian ionospheric source for the trapped particle population.

Theoretical study of the lowest 5Pi and 5Sigma(+) states of CO

Large one-particle basis sets and the internally contracted multireference configuration-interaction treatment of electron correlation were used to characterize the lowest 5Pi and 5Sigma(+) states of CO. It was found that the (1)5Sigma(+) state is weakly bound with an r(e) of 4.76 a(0), supporting results of calculations by Rosenkrantz et al. (1992). The (1)5Pi state has a weakly bound outer well and a significantly bound inner well.

Theoretical Study of the Low-Lying States of TiHe(+),TiNe(+),TiAr(+),VAr(+),CrHe(+),CrAr(+),FeHe(+),FeAr(+),CoHe(+),and CoAr(+)

The potential energy curves for the manifold of molecular states dissociating to the lowest transition metal ion states derived from the 3d(sup n+1) and 3d(sup n)4s(sup 1) occupations have been determined for selected transition-metal ion- rare gas systems. These curves have been computed using large basis sets, and the state-averaged complete- active-space self-consistent-field/multireference configuration interaction level of electron correlation treatment. In general, the families of curves derived from the 3d(sup n+1) and 3d(sup n)4s(sup 1) metal occupations are disjoint; however, for Ti(+) there is a strong mixing of the 3d(sup 2)4s(sup 1) and 3d(sup 3) asymptotes, because of the small separation between the asymptotes. This mixing leads to a failure of single-reference-based techniques; this is discussed in the context of our previous single-reference-based treatments.

Electron Correlation in 4-Component Relativistic Calculations

The full 4-component Dirac-Coulomb equation can nowadays be used in molecular calculations, The first step in solving this relativistic many-electron equation usually consists of solving the closed or open-shell Diarc-Fock equations. Like in non-relativistic calculations the outcome does not account for the effects of electron correlation. This can in principle be remedied by developing relativistic variants of electron correlation methods like Configuration Interaction or Coupled Cluster. In this talk the differences and similarities of such relativistic approaches as compared to non-relativistic methods will be reviewed. Results of Configuration Interaction calculations on the PtH molecule and on the MeF(sub 6, sup 2-) (Me= Co, Rh, Ir) complexes will be presented to give an impression of the kind of results that currently can be obtained.
