A single oscillating proto-hypothalamic neuron gates taxis behavior in the primitive chordate Ciona

Ciona larvae display a number of behaviors, including negative phototaxis. In negative phototaxis, the larvae first perform short spontaneous rhythmic casting swims. As larvae cast in a light field, their photoreceptors are directionally shaded by an associated pigment cell, providing a phototactic cue. This then evokes an extended negative taxis swim. We report here that the larval forebrain of Ciona has a previously uncharacterized single slow-oscillating inhibitory neuron (neuron cor-assBVIN78) that projects to the midbrain, where it targets key interneurons of the phototaxis circuit known as the photoreceptor relay neurons. The anatomical location, gene expression and oscillation of cor-assBVIN78 suggest homology to oscillating neurons of the vertebrate hypothalamus. Ablation of cor-assBVIN78 results in larvae showing extended phototaxis-like swims, but which occur in the absence of phototactic cues. These results indicate that cor-assBVIN78 has a gating activity on phototaxis by projecting temporally-oscillating inhibition to the photoreceptor relay neurons. However, in intact larvae the frequency of cor-assBVIN78 oscillation does not match that of the rhythmic spontaneous swims, indicating that the troughs in oscillations do not themselves initiate swims, but rather that cor-assBVIN78 may modulate the phototaxis circuit by filtering out low level inputs while restricting them temporally to the troughs in inhibition.

Strong, ductile, and hierarchical hetero-lamellar-structured alloys through microstructural inheritance and refinement

The strength−ductility trade-off exists ubiquitously, especially in brittle intermetallic-containing multiple principal element alloys (MPEAs), where the intermetallic phases often induce premature failure leading to severe ductility reduction. Hierarchical heterogeneities represent a promising microstructural solution to achieve simultaneous strength−ductility enhancement. However, it remains fundamentally challenging to tailor hierarchical heterostructures using conventional methods, which often rely on costly and time-consuming processing. Here, we report a multiscale microstructural inheritance and refinement strategy to process “structural hierarchy precursors” in as-cast heterogeneous Al 0.7 CoCrFeNi MPEAs, which lead directly to a hierarchical hetero-lamellar structure (HLS) after simple rolling and annealing. Interestingly, it takes only 10 min of annealing time, two orders of magnitude less than that required to render the state-of-the-art properties during conventional processing of Al 0.7 CoCrFeNi, for us to achieve record-high strength−ductility combinations via the hierarchical HLS design that sequentially stimulates multiple unusual deformation and reinforcement mechanisms. In particular, the HLS-enabled high hetero-deformation-induced (HDI) internal stress triggers profuse <111>-type dislocations on over five independent slip systems in the supposedly brittle intermetallic phase and activates extensive stacking faults (SFs) and nanotwinning in the adjoining soft phase with a rather high SF energy. These unexpected, dynamically reinforcing hetero-deformation mechanisms across multiple length scales facilitate high sustained HDI strain hardening, along with a salient microcrack-mediated extrinsic ductilization effect, suggesting that the proposed microstructural inheritance and refinement strategy provides an efficient, fast, and low-cost approach to overcome the strength−ductility trade-off in a broad range of structural materials.

PM-HIP Mechanical Data Archive

This is the mechanical testing data archive from a neutron irradiation campaign of nuclear structural alloys fabricated by powder metallurgy with hot isostatic pressing (PM-HIP). Data in this archive include uniaxial tensile testing data, fractography of selected tensile bars, and nanoindentation. The irradiation campaign was designed to facilitate a direct comparison of PM-HIP to conventional casting or forging. Five common nuclear structural alloys were included in the campaign: 316L stainless steel, SA508 pressure vessel steel, Grade 91 ferritic steel, and Ni-base alloys 625 and 690. Irradiations were carried out in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to target doses of 1 and 3 displacements per atom (dpa) at target temperatures of 300ºC and 400ºC through the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) project 15-8242.
