Descriptor: High Temporal Resolution Meteorological Data at Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR-HiResMet)

Access to continuous, quality assessed meteorological data is critical for understanding the climatology and atmospheric dynamics of a region. Research facilities like Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) rely on such data to assess site-specific climatology, model potential emissions, establish safety baselines, and prepare for emergency scenarios. To meet these needs, on-site towers at ORNL collect meteorological data at 15-minute and hourly intervals. However, data measurements from meteorological towers are affected by sensor sensitivity, degradation, lightning strikes, power fluctuations, glitching, and sensor failures, all of which can affect data quality. To address these challenges, we conducted a comprehensive quality assessment and processing of five years of meteorological data collected from ORNL at 15-minute intervals, including measurements of temperature, pressure, humidity, wind, and solar radiation. The time series of each variable was pre-processed and gap-filled using established meteorological data collection and cleaning techniques, i.e., the time series were subjected to structural standardization, data integrity testing, automated and manual outlier detection, and gap-filling. The data product and highly generalizable processing workflow developed in Python Jupyter notebooks are publicly accessible online. As a key contribution of this study, the evaluated 5-year data will be used to train atmospheric dispersion models that simulate dispersion dynamics across the complex ridge-and-valley topography of the Oak Ridge Reservation in East Tennessee.

Descriptor: Infrastructure Perception and Control: Multi-Sensor Object Tracking Dataset (IPC-MSOT)

Traffic intersections are crucial and challenging nodes in transportation networks where multiple lanes of vehicles and pedestrians converge. Traffic accidents often occur at traffic intersections, including a large proportion of traffic fatalities and about one-half of all traffic injuries in the United States. Object detection data were collected in 2024 across three intersections in Colorado Springs, CO, USA, over the course of multiple days and various times to induce a heterogeneous mix of traffic conditions and behaviors. The purpose of the data collection exercises was to learn various attributes about infrastructure sensors and to build a repository of high-resolution, object-level data that can be used for research and development (e.g., to develop multisensor data fusion algorithms). The Infrastructure Perception and Control:Multi-Sensor Object tracking (IPC-MSOT) dataset was collected as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) project, where the city of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory collaborated to collect object-level trajectory data from road users using multiple types of infrastructure sensors deployed at different intersections. This dataset allows for testing of late-stage sensor fusion algorithms and their ability to ingest multimodal sensor data, and it can be utilized by traffic engineers to design and evaluate trajectory-based signal control strategies.

Electronic descriptors for dislocation deformation behavior and intrinsic ductility in bcc high-entropy alloys

Controlling the balance between strength and damage tolerance in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) is central to their application as structural materials. Materials discovery efforts for HEAs are therefore impeded by an incomplete understanding of the chemical factors governing this balance. Through first-principles calculations, this study explores factors governing intrinsic ductility of a crucial subset of HEAs—those with a body-centered cubic (bcc) crystal structure. Analyses of three sets of bcc HEAs comprising nine different compositions reveal that alloy chemistry profoundly influences screw dislocation core structure, dislocation vibrational properties, and intrinsic ductility parameters derived from unstable stacking fault and surface energies. Key features in the electronic structure are identified that correlate with these properties: the fraction of occupied bonding states and bimodality of the d-orbital density of states. The findings enhance the fundamental understanding of the origins of intrinsic ductility and establish an electronic structure–based framework for computationally accelerated materials discovery and design.

Coulombic Efficiency and Capacity Retention are Not Universal Descriptors of Cell Aging

Capacity and coulombic efficiency are often used to assess the performance of Li-ion batteries, under the assumption that these quantities can provide direct insights about the rate of electron consumption due to growth of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Here, we show that electrode properties can actually change the amount of information about aging that can be directly retrieved from capacity measurements. During cycling of full-cells, only portions of the voltage profiles of the positive and negative electrodes are accessible, leaving a reservoir of cyclable Li + stored at both electrodes. The size and availability of this reservoir depends on the shape of the voltage profiles and accessing this extra Li + can offset some of the capacity that is consumed by the SEI. Consequently, capacity and efficiency measurements can, at times, severely underestimate the rate of side reactions experienced by the cell. We show, for example, that a same rate of SEI growth would cause faster capacity fade in LiFePO 4 than in NMC cells, and that the perceived effects of aging depend on testing variables such as depth of discharge. Simply measuring capacity may be insufficient to gauge the true extent of aging endured by Li-ion batteries.

An objective method for forecasting tropical cyclone intensity and motion using Nimbus-5 ESMR measurements and non-satellite derived descriptors

An empirical analysis program, based on finding an optimal representation of the data was applied to 120 observations of 29 1973 and 1974 North Pacific tropical cyclones. Each observation consists of a field of Nimbus-5 Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer radiation measurements at 267 grid points covering and surrounding the tropical cyclone plus nine other non-satellite derived discriptors. Forecast algorithms to estimate storm intensity and motion at 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours after each observation were developed using an independent eigen screening analysis. These algorithms were based on best track data. Independent testing of these algorithms showed that the performance of most of these algorithms were better than persistence and the algorithms forecasting 24, 48, and 72 hour maximum wind speed were better than those made operationally by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center for 1973 and 1974 that did not use best track data.

Dynamic descriptors for contextual classification of remotely sensed hyperspectral image data analysis

The extended CIE transformation procedure of Chiou (1984) is applied to five sets of remotely sensed 0.4-2.5-micron spectrometric data on field crops including winter and spring wheat, corn, and soybeans) obtained at the Purdue University Laboratory for Applications of - Remote Sensing during 1977-1980 using the techniques described by Hinzman (1981). The results are presented in tables and chromaticity diagrams and it is found that each crop has an identifiable time-variant spectral characteristic permitting determination of seasonal growth patterns. The applicability of the method to data from airborne and spaceborne imaging spectrometers is indicated.

Time-cumulated visible and infrared histograms used as descriptor of cloud cover

To study the statistical behavior of clouds for different climate regimes, the spatial and temporal stability of VIS-IR bidimensional histograms is tested. Also, the effect of data sampling and averaging on the histogram shapes is considered; in particular the sampling strategy used by the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project is tested.

Data Descriptor: A Land Data Assimilation System for Sub-Saharan Africa Food and Water Security Applications

Seasonal agricultural drought monitoring systems, which rely on satellite remote sensing and land surface models (LSMs), are important for disaster risk reduction and famine early warning. These systems require the best available weather inputs, as well as a long-term historical record to contextualize current observations. This article introduces the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) Land Data Assimilation System (FLDAS), a custom instance of the NASA Land Information System (LIS) framework. The FLDAS is routinely used to produce multi-model and multi-forcing estimates of hydro-climate states and fluxes over semi-arid, food insecure regions of Africa. These modeled data and derived products, like soil moisture percentiles and water availability, were designed and are currently used to complement FEWSNETs operational remotely sensed rainfall, evapotranspiration, and vegetation observations. The 30+ years of monthly outputs from the FLDAS simulations are publicly available from the NASA Goddard Earth Science Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) and recommended for use in hydroclimate studies, early warning applications, and by agro-meteorological scientists in Eastern, Southern, and Western Africa.

Statistical Descriptors of Composite Fiber Aggregation

This study introduces a method of characterizing fiber aggregation and resin rich regions in composite microstructures. Microscale models of representative elements (RVE) need to be indicative of the extend of clustering (i.e. close fiber-to-fiber interaction) and resin rich “pools” which may impact the overall strength and performance of a composite structure. This algorithm was used to evaluate different unidirectional 2-D microstructure scans, which will be compared to their manufacturing method or any special treatment processes. These cluster and pool scan statistics can be used as criteria to judge statistical equivalency of artificially constructed microstructures.

Understanding Twinning and Deformation in High Entropy Alloys

A combination of high strength and high ductility has been observed in multi-principal element alloys due to twin formation attributed to low stacking fault energy (SFE). In the pursuit of low SFE alloys, a key bottleneck is the lack of understanding of the composition–SFE cor- relations that would guide tailoring SFE via alloy composition. Using density functional theory (DFT), we show that dopant radius, which have been postulated as a key descriptor for SFE in dilute alloys, does not fully explain SFE trends across different host metals. Instead, charge density is a much more central descriptor. It allows us to (1) explain contrasting SFE trends in Ni and Cu host metals due to various dopants in dilute concentrations, (2) explain the large SFE variations observed in the literature even within a given alloy composition due to the nearest neighbor environments in “model” concentrated alloys, and (3) develop a machine learning model that can be used to predict SFEs in multi-elemental alloys. This model opens a possibility to use charge density as a descriptor for predicting SFE in alloys. Furthermore, a descriptor-less machine learning (ML) model based only on charge density images extracted from density functional theory (DFT) is developed to predict stacking fault energies (SFE) in concentrated alloys. The model is based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) as one of the promising ML techniques for dealing with complex images and data. Identification of correct descriptors is a key bottleneck to develop ML models for predicting materials properties. Often, in most ML models, textbook physical descriptors such as atomic radius, valence charge and electronegativity are used as descriptors which have limitations because these properties change in concentrated alloys when multiple elements are mixed to form a solid solution. We illustrate that, within the scope of DFT, the search for descriptors can be circumvented by electronic charge density, which is the backbone of the Kohn-Sham DFT and describes the system completely. The performance of our model is demonstrated by predicting SFE of concentrated alloys with an RMSE and R2 of 6.18 mJ/m2 and 0.87, respectively, validating the accuracy of the proposed approach.

Optimal invariant sets for atomistic machine learning

The representation of atomic configurations for machine learning models has led to numerous sets of descriptors. However, many descriptor sets are incomplete and/or functionally dependent. Incomplete sets cannot faithfully represent atomic environments. Yet complete constructions often suffer from a high degree of functional dependence, where some descriptors are functions of others. These redundant descriptors do not improve discrimination between atomic environments. We employ pattern recognition techniques to remove dependent descriptors to produce the smallest possible set that satisfies completeness. We apply this in two ways: First, we refine an existing description, the atomic cluster expansion. Second, we augment an incomplete construction, yielding a new message-passing neural network architecture that can recognize up to 5-body patterns. This architecture shows strong accuracy on state-of-the-art benchmarks while retaining low computational cost. Our results demonstrate the utility of this strategy to optimize descriptor sets across a range of descriptors and application datasets.
