Preliminary Design of Nuclear Reactor Heat Delivery Systems: Integration with Reference Oil Refinery, Methanol Synthesis, and Hydrogen Production

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Integrated Energy Systems (IES) program is generating comprehensive analyses validating the opportunity for using nuclear energy in a variety of applications including future clean grids, providing heat for direct use, and providing heat to help reduce emissions in chemical commodities. This work focuses on the preliminary designs of thermal delivery systems that can integrate heat produced from a nuclear core to industrial processes. The key research question that needs to be answered is: what is the prospective method for integrating nuclear generated heat energy into non-electric applications that can facilitate combined heat and power operations by advanced nuclear reactor systems? This research is a composition of case studies showing preliminary conceptual designs for thermal delivery systems integrating advanced nuclear systems with a few industrial systems including high temperature steam electrolysis, a reference oil refinery, and potential future methanol systems that supplant some natural gas use with nuclear energy. Piping and instrumentation diagrams have been developed to show the conceptual integration of nuclear systems with representative industrial systems. Different features of the configurations are dependent on the specific integration requirements including energy source conditions, demand quantity, and require energy application conditions. Design concepts are validated using thermodynamic balance calculations to verify system performance including calculating system losses during transport. Key components: pumps and compressors, heat exchangers, and network piping are reported with key design information and sizing.

Personalizing knowledge delivery services: a conceptual framework

Consistent with the call of the Minnesota Symposium for new theory in knowledge management, we offer a new conceptualization of Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) as a portfolio of personalized knowledge delivery services. Borrowing from research on online consumer behavior, we describe the challenges imposed by personalized knowledge delivery services, and suggest design parameters that can help to overcome these challenges. We develop our design constructs through a set of hypotheses and discuss the research implications of our new conceptualization. Finally, we describe practical implications suggested by our conceptualization - practical suggestions that we hope to gain some experience with as part of an ongoing action research project at our partner organization.

A Ligand-Directed Nitrophenol Carbonate for Transient in situ Bioconjugation and Drug Delivery

Here we report the first use of ligand-directed proximity accelerated bioconjugation chemistry in the tandem delivery and release of a therapeutic payload. To do this, we designed a nitrophenol carbonate for ligand-directed in situ bioconjugation of a prodrug payload to a protein. The transient nature of our conjugation chemistry renders the protein a depot for timedependent release of active drug following hydrolysis and selfimmolation. In our model system, using an immunostimulant prodrug, biotin ligand, and avidin protein, we observe release of bioavailable immunostimulant both spectroscopically and with an immune cell line over 48 h. Avidin co-crystalized with the nitrophenolate directing group verified the binding pose of the ligand and offered insight into the mechanism of in situ bioconjugation. Overall, this scaffold warrants further investigation for the time-dependent delivery of therapeutics and use in protein ligand pairs beyond biotin and avidin used for this work.

Improving the bioaccessibility of lipophilic ingredient in its oral intestinal delivery by ultrasound and biological cross‐linker

Abstract BACKGROUND Great efforts have been made to improve the oral bioaccessibility of lipophilic ingredients with multi‐functionalities. Achieving intestinal delivery of lipophilic ingredients and their encapsulation in micelles composed of bile salts and lipid hydrolysates (i.e. fatty acids) is critical for improving oral bioaccessibility. Therefore, oil‐core microcapsules are considered ideal carriers of lipophilic ingredients. Previous studies have reported oil‐core/zein‐shell microcapsules constructed by a one‐step anti‐solvent process. Still, its efficacy as an intestinal delivery system was limited because if the porous shell structure. RESULTS Zein solution was pretreated with ultrasound and tannic acid (TA) cross‐linking. Composite oil‐core microcapsule (COM) with a compact shell structure was successfully prepared by using modified zein solution in the anti‐solvent process. Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy and circular dichroism analyses indicated that ultrasound and TA synergistically promote the conformational transition of zein from α‐helix to β‐sheet and enhance the hydrophobic interactions among protein chains. The above changes contribute to the strengthen of shell zein network. Correspondingly, COM presents superior encapsulation efficiency and environmental stability over the simple oil‐core microcapsule (SOM) prepared without the use of ultrasound and TA. Furthermore, antioxidant activity of β‐carotene was well retained during the encapsulation process. In vitro studies indicated that COM was more resistant to digestibility and acid‐induced swelling. More than 87% of β‐carotene could be released in the intestine in a sustainable way. The controllable release behavior thus promoted a significant increase in bioaccessibility of β‐carotene encapsulated in COM compared to SOM (85.9% versus 48.5%). CONCLUSION The COM generated here shows potential for bioaccessibility improvement of lipophilic ingredients. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
