Secure hierarchical processing using a secure ledger

Disclosed is a system and method for processing data using blockchain technology. The system includes a memory having programmable instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processor, cause the system to: authenticate one or more sensors in anticipation of receiving component data; receive component data, upon successful authentication; store the component data locally or to a cloud-based server and/or calculate a root value for the component data; store or embed the root value with the stored component data; condense the component data and link the condensed component data to the stored component data via the root value. The system further includes instructions to log the condensed data, including the root value, to a ledger, and to identify a tag or transaction id corresponding to the logging event for subsequent retrieval of the condensed data using the tag or transaction id.

Data-Driven Atomic Physics: Harnessing Machine Learning and High-Repetition-Rate Experiments for Laser-driven HED

High-energy-density plasma experiments are central to progress in atomic physics, fusion energy, and national security science, but they have traditionally been constrained by slow data collection and manual, time-intensive analysis. This project targeted that bottleneck by enabling high-repetition-rate experiments to produce and interpret much larger volumes of data quickly enough to guide experiments while they run.

Automated, reliable, and efficient continental-scale replication of 7.3 petabytes of computational simulation data: A case study

We report on our experiences replicating 7.3 petabytes (PB) of Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) computational simulation data from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California to Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) in Illinois and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee—a task motivated by a need for increased reliability, capacity, and performance. This task presented significant challenges: the need to move 29 million files twice under time pressure from aging storage hardware; a source file system bottleneck limiting throughput to 1.5 GB/s; frequent site maintenance windows; and the need for complete reliability at scale. We addressed these challenges using a simple replication tool that invoked Globus to transfer large bundles of files while tracking progress in a database, dynamically rerouting transfers to work around maintenance periods and file system limitations. Under the covers, Globus organized transfers to make efficient use of the high-speed Energy Sciences network (ESnet) and the data transfer nodes deployed at participating sites, and also addressed security, integrity checking, and recovery from a variety of transient failures. This success demonstrates the considerable benefits that can accrue from the adoption of performant data replication infrastructure. The replication tool is available at https://github.com/esgf2-us/data-replication-tools.

Stereo-vision thermal imaging system for tracking flying animals in wind farm areas (CRADA #763) Abstract

CRADA 763: abstract ThermalTracker-3D (TT3D) is a stereo vision thermal imaging system that provides 3D flight information on detected birds, bats, and other flying targets. The system was initially developed for use in the siting and monitoring of offshore wind projects to establish pre-construction and operation collision risk data but can be applied to terrestrial wind energy projects as well as national security monitoring. This technology will reduce monitoring cost, decrease processing time, and provide more accurate data for wind energy developers/operators and regulatory agencies. While the current technology is at a high level of readiness, Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7, there remain several barriers to commercialization, particularly around ease-of-use, that result in a low Adoption Readiness Level (ARL). The proposed work will advance commercialization readiness by streamlining calibration methods for built systems. This work will:1. 1. develop a software package for factory and dynamic calibration processes 2. test that package with existing prototype TT3D systems, and 3. conduct outreach with industry end-users.

Estimating soybean yields from high-temporal-resolution multi-source data using deep learning

Accurate and timely crop yield prediction is crucial for ensuring food security and maintaining stable agricultural markets. In recent years, there has been a surge in interest in leveraging high-temporal-resolution, multi-source data for effective crop growth monitoring and yield estimation. A notable challenge arises from the difficulty in capturing the intricate interactions between variables across different time steps within these high-temporal-resolution time series datasets. This complexity hinders the reliable extraction of yield information from voluminous and often noisy datasets, especially during periods of extreme weather events. Here, in this study, we propose an Attention and Graph Isomorphism Network-enhanced Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory network (AGB-LSTM) for estimating county-level soybean yield in the United States. This model integrates a diverse set of remote sensing data, including Near-Infrared Reflectance of Vegetation (NIRv), Sun-Induced chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF), and Gross Primary Productivity (GPP), along with environmental covariates. The AGB-LSTM effectively leverages information related to crop yield from high-temporal-resolution time series data (5-days), achieving an accuracy of R²= 0.67 and rRMSE = 14.46%. This approach significantly outperforms traditional machine learning methods such as Random Forest (RF) (R²= 0.52, rRMSE = 17.36%) and Bi-LSTM (R²= 0.58, rRMSE = 16.17%). Sensitivity experiments with different time steps and ranges demonstrated that our model could accurately and stably predict yields 1 to 2 months before harvest. Moreover, data with a finer temporal resolution consistently improved prediction performance, resulting in an approximately 20% increase in and an approximately 20% decrease in rRMSE compared to using monthly composites. We also evaluated the robustness of the model under extreme climate events and observed strong performance (R²= 0.50, rRMSE = 21.32%). Finally, yield mapping for major soybean-producing regions in North America in 2023 revealed spatial patterns that closely matched USDA yield reports. Our findings suggest that the AGB-LSTM model is a promising and effective method for estimating yield and has notable potential for global crop yield forecasting.

Validating automated resonance evaluation with synthetic data

The integrity and precision of nuclear data are crucial for a broad spectrum of applications, from national security and nuclear reactor design to medical diagnostics, where the associated uncertainties can significantly impact outcomes. A substantial portion of uncertainty in nuclear data originates from the subjective biases in the evaluation process, a crucial phase in the nuclear data production pipeline. Recent advancements indicate that automation of certain routines can mitigate these biases, thereby standardizing the evaluation process and enhancing reproducibility. This research aims to provide a methodology, framework, and metrics for the validation of automated nuclear data evaluation software leveraging high-quality synthetic data that closely mimic real experimental observables. An introduced error metric provides a scale and intuitive measure of the evaluation quality by quantifying the estimate’s accuracy and performance across the specified energy range. Synthetic data provides access to experimental observables and underlying resonance parameters, enabling comparison of different evaluations. The methodology is demonstrated using Ta-181 isotope data in the resolved resonance region. The Automated Resonance Identification Subroutine (ARIS), which operates without prior resonance information, was used to test and showcase the framework’s capabilities utilizing the proposed error metrics. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and framework for optimizing software parameters and testing hypotheses through “what-if” controlled experiments, such as modifying assumptions about experimental conditions or average resonance parameters.

Acoustic Measurements of Solvent Extraction Processes in Support of Safeguards

The proposed poster focuses on using acoustic monitoring to advance detection techniques for reprocessing equipment in support of nuclear safeguards. The usage of free air acoustic monitoring has been previously demonstrated at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) at facilities such as the Advanced Test Reactor and the National Security Test Range. However, this work focuses on a deployment environment dedicated to monitoring separation processes, using solvent extraction equipment such as centrifugal contactors. This environment offers an opportunity for signal discovery and in characterizing acoustic signatures of the equipment in operation. This data can support the development of safeguards by design and security by design measures for aqueous reprocessing facilities. Furthermore, this type of monitoring can aid in early detection and identification of removed materials indicating diversion, which is essential for initiating material recovery and actor identification. The results of this work include data from nine low-frequency acoustic sensors used to investigate potential acoustic characteristics of centrifugal contactors used in multi-stage processes. The results also discuss the correlation between the signatures and the operation of the contactor banks.
