Chapman–Jouguet deflagration criteria and compressibility dynamics of turbulent fast flames for turbulence-induced deflagration-to-detonation transition

This work characterizes the compressibility dynamics in turbulent fast flames for a range of turbulent flame speeds. These turbulent fast flames experience increased effects of compressibility through the formation of strong shocks and may develop a runaway acceleration combined with a pressure buildup that leads to turbulence induced deflagration-to-detonation transition (tDDT). Simultaneous high-speed particle image velocimetry, OH* chemiluminescence, schlieren, and pressure measurements are used to examine the reacting flow field and flame dynamics. We examine flames with turbulent flame speeds ranging from 100 to 600 m/s. At lower turbulent flame speeds, the flame is not able to produce favorable background conditions for deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) onset, and thus flame compressibility and turbulence amplification are less dominant, resulting in a weaker acoustic coupling between the flame and compressed region. As the turbulent burning velocities exceed the Chapman–Jouguet deflagration speed, favorable background conditions are produced, as we observe flame-generated shocks and flame-generated turbulence with higher turbulent velocities and larger turbulent scales. At this regime, the flame is categorized to be at the runaway transition regime that leads to tDDT.

Establishing criteria for the transition from kinetic to fluid modeling in hollow cathode analysis

Hollow cathodes for plasma switch applications are investigated via 2D3V particle-in-cell simulations of the channel and plume region. The kinetic nature of the plasma within the channel is dependent on the thermalization rate of electrons, emitted from the insert. When Coulomb collisions occur at a much greater rate than ionization or excitation collisions, the electron energy distribution function rapidly relaxes to a Maxwellian and the plasma within the channel can be described accurately via a fluid model. In contrast, if inelastic processes are much faster than Coulomb collisions, then the electron energy distribution function in the channel exhibits a notable high-energy tail, and a kinetic treatment is required. This criterion is applied to hollow cathodes from the literature, revealing that a fluid approach is suitable for most electric propulsion applications, whereas a kinetic treatment can be more critical to accurate modeling of plasma switches.

Uniqueness criteria for the Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude

The scattering amplitudes of string theory exhibit many extraordinary properties. But are they the unique mathematical objects to do so? Recently, it has been shown how the spectrum and amplitudes of open string theory follow directly from the assumptions of faster than power-law falloff at high energies and a property dubbed level truncation. At present there is no analogous principle for closed string scattering, which is famously rigid and naively impervious to modification. In this paper we analytically bootstrap the spectrum and four-point amplitudes of the closed string—together with a parametrized space of deformations—from conditions on high-energy falloff and level truncation. While these deformations exhibit the same Regge scaling as pure gravity, in the tensionless limit they reproduce remarkable extremal amplitudes that have appeared in bottom-up studies of positivity.

Criteria for Grid-Forming Inverters Transitioning Between Current Limiting Mode and Normal Operation

Here, this letter focuses on the fault recovery analysis of inverters using multi-loop droop based grid-forming control, taking into account different current limiting strategies. A criterion is proposed to determine when the inverter can exit the current limiting mode after fault clearance. The theoretical findings are verified through electromagnetic transient simulations using the direct (d)-axis priority-based current limiting method, circular current limiting method, and virtual impedance method.

Probabilistic Data-Driven Sampling via Multi-Criteria Importance Analysis

Although supercomputers are becoming increasingly powerful, their components have thus far not scaled proportionately. Compute power is growing enormously and is enabling finely resolved simulations that produce never-before-seen features. However, I/O capabilities lag by orders of magnitude, which means only a fraction of the simulation data can be stored for post hoc analysis. Prespecified plans for saving features and quantities of interest do not work for features that have not been seen before. Data-driven intelligent sampling schemes are needed to detect and save important parts of the simulation while it is running. Here, we propose a novel sampling scheme that reduces the size of the data by orders-of-magnitude while still preserving important regions. The approach we develop selects points with unusual data values and high gradients. Finally, we demonstrate that our approach outperforms traditional sampling schemes on a number of tasks.

Criteria for projected discovery and exclusion sensitivities of counting experiments

Abstract The projected discovery and exclusion capabilities of particle physics and astrophysics/cosmology experiments are often quantified using the median expected p-value or its corresponding significance. We argue that this criterion leads to flawed results, which for example can counterintuitively project lessened sensitivities if the experiment takes more data or reduces its background. We discuss the merits of several alternatives to the median expected significance, both when the background is known and when it is subject to some uncertainty. We advocate for standard use of the “exact Asimov significance” $$Z^\mathrm{A}$$ Z A detailed in this paper.

IHE Material and IHE Subassembly Qualification Test Description and Criteria (v. 14.7)

The purpose of the deflagration-to-detonation test is to demonstrate that an IHE material will not undergo deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) under stockpile relevant conditions of scale, confinement, and material condition. Inherent in this test design is the assumption that ignition does occur, with onset of deflagration. The test design will incorporate large margins and replicates to account for the stochastic nature of DDT events.

Methylmercury Retention Evaluation to Support Tank 50 and Saltstone Waste Acceptance Criteria: Parts 2 and 3

The objective of this work was to provide a technical basis for the organic mercury waste acceptance criterion (WAC) for Tank 50 salt solution. The current mercury WAC for Tank 50 solution is 325 mg/L as Hg regardless of the form of mercury, which is about three times higher than any total Hg concentrations measured to date in Tank 50 solution. To date, the highest total Hg and MeHg + concentrations in the Tank 50 solution were 105 and 62 mg/L, respectively.

AI to Predict Glass Compositions Satisfying Property and Cooling Rate Criteria

This project aimed to develop a predictive, artificial intelligence/machine learning-based model to identify glass compositions satisfying specified property requirements. Such a model would provide a systematic approach for narrowing down the nearly infinite range of possible compositions for glasses and minimize unnecessary experimental trial and error. A large empirical data set for training and testing the algorithm was obtained from the SciGlass database. It contains glass compositions and corresponding property data from a wide range of literature sources. However, the currently available form of this data, recently released under an open database license, is not conducive to easy querying and use. The data structure was deciphered and a customized parsing code developed to make this data more usable for the current and future work. Neural network models were developed and trained on viscosity data from the database and demonstrated potential for improving prediction accuracy over a traditional regression model.

LLNL FY2022 Aging and Lifetimes Exit Criteria: Milestone 8118, GC#3

Adhesives and adhesive-bond joints play a critical role in many applications across the national security enterprise. They are ubiquitous and their aging performance can impact the physical and chemical behavior of complex systems. Previously, we have explored the chemical aging behavior of polyurethane adhesives (Halthane 73-18, Halthane 88-3, and Wilethane 44) exposed to varying levels of radiation and identified the primary chemical degradation products. In this work, we expand upon our analysis to understand how the mechanical properties of adhesives-bonded joints behave after radiation exposure.
