Generation of three-dimensional boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinate systems for wing/wing-tip geometries using the elliptic solver method

A three-dimensional elliptic solver technique is utilized to generate surface-fitted coordinates about wing/wing-tip configurations. The method is applicable to wings of arbitrary section profile and camber, leading-edge sweep, taper ratio, and spanwise thickness variation. The basic theory of three-dimensional elliptic mappings is developed along with a method to compute interior coordinate control functions. Examples of grids generated about several wing/wing-tip geometries are given. A 49 x 33 x 17 grid requires about 3 minutes of CPU time on a CYBER 203 computer.

Control system for multi-system coordination via a single reference governor

This report describes the improvements to the Feasible Actuator Range Modifier (FARM) component of the RAVEN-based HYBRID framework for analysis of Integrated Energy Systems (IES). FARM supports the HERON plug-in that solves the power dispatch problem. The solution involves economically optimal dispatches that satisfy the limits on production variables and corresponding rates of variation (explicit constraints) as well as the limits on the process variables tied to the service life of equipment (implicit constraints). The problem can be addressed as a two-stage process, i.e., HERON power dispatcher estimates a solution that meets explicit constraints (low-resolution physics), whereas FARM uses the simulation outcomes of HYBRID high-fidelity model to capture the system dynamic response and enforce implicit constraints (high-resolution physics). The initial version of the code (FARM-Alpha) was released by Argonne National Laboratory in January 2021 followed by FARM-Beta (January 2022) and FARM-Gamma (April 2022).

Multimodal Perception and Multicriterion Control of Nested Systems: Coordination of Postural Control and Vehicular Control - 1

The purpose of this report is to identify the essential characteristics of goal-directed whole-body motion. The report is organized into three major sections (Sections 2, 3, and 4). Section 2 reviews general themes from ecological psychology and control-systems engineering that are relevant to the perception and control of whole-body motion. These themes provide an organizational framework for analyzing the complex and interrelated phenomena that are the defining characteristics of whole-body motion. Section 3 of this report applies the organization framework from the first section to the problem of perception and control of aircraft motion. This is a familiar problem in control-systems engineering and ecological psychology. Section 4 examines an essential but generally neglected aspect of vehicular control: coordination of postural control and vehicular control. To facilitate presentation of this new idea, postural control and its coordination with vehicular control are analyzed in terms of conceptual categories that are familiar in the analysis of vehicular control.

Viscous compressible flow about blunt bodies using a numerically generated orthogonal coordinate system

A numerical solution to the Navier-Stokes equations was obtained for blunt axisymmetric entry bodies of arbitrary shape in supersonic flow. These equations are solved on a finite difference mesh obtained from a simple numerical technique which generates orthogonal coordinates between arbitrary boundaries. The governing equations are solved in time dependent form using Stetter's improved stability three step predictor corrector method. For the present application, the metric coefficients were obtained numerically using fourth order accurate, finite difference relations and proved to be totally reliable for the highly stretched mesh used to resolve the thin viscous boundary layer. Solutions are obtained for a range of blunt body nose shapes including concavities.

Correlation of ERTS MSS data and earth coordinate systems

Experience has revealed a problem in the analysis and interpretation of ERTS multispectral scanner (MSS) data. The problem is one of accurately correlating ERTS MSS pixels (picture elements) with analysis areas specified on aerial photographs or topographic maps for training recognition computers and/or evaluating recognition results. A computer-aided procedure to correlate coordinates from topographic maps and/or aerial photographs with ERTS data coordinates has been developed. In the procedure, a map transformation from earth coordinates to ERTS scan line and point numbers is calculated using selected ground control points and the method of least squares. The map transformation is then applied to the earth coordinates of selected areas to obtain the corresponding ERTS point and line numbers.

The effect of wind and moisture gradients on the arbitrary assignment of cloud motions to a vertical coordinate system in two Sesame cases

Satellite-derived cloud motion 'wind' vectors (CMV) are increasingly used in mesoscale and in global analyses, and questions have been raised regarding the uncertainty of the level assignment for the CMV. One of two major problems in selecting a level for the CMV is related to uncertainties in assigning the motion vector to either the cloud top or base. The second problem is related to the inability to transfer the 'wind' derived from the CMV at individually specified heights to a standard coordinated surface. The present investigation has the objective to determine if the arbitrary level assignment represents a serious obstacle to the use of cloud motion wind vectors in the mesoscale analysis of a severe storm environment.

Correlation of ERTS MSS data and earth coordinate systems

The author has identified the following significant results. Experience has revealed a problem in the analysis and interpretation of ERTS-1 multispectral scanner (MSS) data. The problem is one of accurately correlating ERTS-1 MSS pixels with analysis areas specified on aerial photographs or topographic maps for training recognition computers and/or evaluating recognition results. It is difficult for an analyst to accurately identify which ERTS-1 pixels on a digital image display belong to specific areas and test plots, especially when they are small. A computer-aided procedure to correlate coordinates from topographic maps and/or aerial photographs with ERTS-1 data coordinates has been developed. In the procedure, a map transformation from earth coordinates to ERTS-1 scan line and point numbers is calculated using selected ground control points nad the method of least squares. The map transformation is then applied to the earth coordinates of selected areas to obtain the corresponding ERTS-1 point and line numbers. An optional provision allows moving the boundaries of the plots inward by variable distances so the selected pixels will not overlap adjacent features.

Information Systems Coordinate Emergency Management

The rescue crews have been searching for the woman for nearly a week. Hurricane Katrina devastated Hancock County, the southernmost point in Mississippi, and the woman had stayed through the storm in her beach house. There is little hope of finding her alive; the search teams know she is gone because the house is gone. Late at night in the art classroom of the school that is serving as the county s emergency operations center, Craig Harvey is discussing the search with the center s commander. Harvey is the Chief Operating Officer of a unique company called NVision Solutions Inc., based at NASA s Stennis Space Center in Bay St. Louis, only a couple of miles away. He and his entire staff have set up a volunteer operation in the art room, supporting the emergency management efforts using technology and capabilities the company developed through its NASA partnerships. As he talks to the commander, Harvey feels an idea taking shape that might lead them to the woman s location. Working with surface elevation data and hydrological principles, Harvey creates a map showing how the floodwaters from the storm would have flowed along the topography of the region around the woman s former home. Using the map, search crews find the woman s body in 15 minutes. Recovering individuals who have been lost is a sad reality of emergency management in the wake of a disaster like Hurricane Katrina in 2005. But the sooner answers can be provided, the sooner a community s overall recovery can take place. When damage is extensive, resources are scattered, and people are in dire need of food, shelter, and medical assistance, the speed and efficiency of emergency operations can be the key to limiting the impact of a disaster and speeding the process of recovery. And a key to quick and effective emergency planning and response is geographic information. With a host of Earth-observing satellites orbiting the globe at all times, NASA generates an unmatched wealth of data about our ever-changing planet. This information can be captured, analyzed, and visualized by geographic information systems (GIS) to produce maps, charts, and other tools that can reveal information essential to a wide variety of applications including emergency management. Knowing precise, real-time information about the size, location, environmental conditions, and resulting damage of an event like a flood or wildfire as well as the location and numbers of emergency responders and other resources contributes directly to the effectiveness of disaster mitigation. The need for such information is also evident when responding to homeland security threats, such as a terrorist attack. Recognizing the value of its geospatial information resources for this and other purposes, in 1998 Stennis and the state of Mississippi partnered to form what became the Enterprise for Innovative Geospatial Solutions (EIGS) industry cluster, supporting the growth of remote sensing and GIS-based research and business. As part of EIGS, several companies partnered with NASA through dual use and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contracts. Among those was NVision.
