Documentation of program COORDC to generate and coordinate system for 3D corners with or without fillet using body fitted curvilinear coordinates, part 2

The computer program COORDC generates a body fitted curvilinear coordinate system for corner geometry with or without corner fillets. It is assumed that at any given xi, x remains constant; consequently the only variation is in y and z. It is also assumed that for all xi's in the physical plane the coordinate system in y-z plane is similar. This enables solution of coordinate system for one particular xi = 1 (x for xi = 1 is arbitrarily chosen to be 0.0) and the solution for all other xi plane can be easily specified once the coordinates in the physical plane on the line 1 or = to xi or = to IMAX, eta = 1, zeta = 1 are specified.

Documentation of program AFTBDY to generate coordinate system for 3D after body using body fitted curvilinear coordinates, part 1

The computer program AFTBDY generates a body fitted curvilinear coordinate system for a wedge curved after body. This wedge curved after body is being used in an experimental program. The coordinate system generated by AFTBDY is used to solve 3D compressible N.S. equations. The coordinate system in the physical plane is a cartesian x,y,z system, whereas, in the transformed plane a rectangular xi, eta, zeta system is used. The coordinate system generated is such that in the transformed plane coordinate spacing in the xi, eta, zeta direction is constant and equal to unity. The physical plane coordinate lines in the different regions are clustered heavily or sparsely depending on the regions where physical quantities to be solved for by the N.S. equations have high or low gradients. The coordinate distribution in the physical plane is such that x stays constant in eta and zeta direction, whereas, z stays constant in xi and eta direction. The desired distribution in x and z is input to the program. Consequently, only the y-coordinate is solved for by the program AFTBDY.

Efficient grid generation

Because the governing equations in fluid dynamics contain partial differentials and are too difficult in most cases to solve analytically, these differentials are generally replaced by finite difference terms. These terms contain terms in the solution at nearby states. This procedure discretizes the field into a finite number of states. These states, when plotted, form a grid, or mesh, of points. It is at these states, or field points, that the solution is found. The optimum choice of states, the x, y, z coordinate values, minimizes error and computational time. But the process of finding these states is made more difficult by complex boundaries, and by the need to control step size differences between the states, that is, the need to control the spacing of field points. One solution technique uses a different set of state variables, which define a different coordinate system, to generate the grid more easily. A new method, developed by Dr. Joseph Steger, combines elliptic and hyperbolic partial differential equations into a mapping function between the physical and computational coordinate systems. This system of equations offers more control than either equation provides alone. The Steger algorithm was modified in order to allow bodies with stronger concavities to be used, offering the possibility of generating a single grid about multiple bodies. Work was also done on identifying areas where grid breakdown occurs.

Protection coordination of the Kennedy Space Center electric distribution network

A computer technique is described for visualizing the coordination and protection of any existing system of devices and settings by plotting the tripping characteristics of the involved devices on a common basis. The program determines the optimum settings of a given set of protective devices and configuration in the sense of the best expected coordinated operation of these devices. Subroutines are given for simulating time versus current characteristics of the different relays, circuit breakers, and fuses in the system; coordination index computation; protection checks; plotting; and coordination optimation.

Generation of orthogonal boundary-fitted coordinate systems

A method is presented for computing orthogonal boundary fitted coordinate systems for geometries with coordinate distributions specified on all boundaries. The system which has found most extensive use in generating boundary fitted grids is made up of Poisson equations, of which the functions P and Q provide a means for controlling the spacing and density of grid lines in the coordinate system. While questions remain concerning the existence and uniqueness of orthogonal systems, the generating method presented adds to the available, useful techniques for constructing these systems.

Precision orbit computations for an operational environment

Taking advantage of the improvements to the Earth's gravitation field and tracking station coordinates, an orbital computational consistency of the order of 5 meters was achieved for total position differences between orbital solutions for the Seasat and GEOS-3. The main source of error in these solutions was in the mathematical models that are required to generate these results, i.e., gravitation, atmospheric drag, etc. Different Earth gravitation fields and tracking coordinates were analyzed and evaluated in obtaining these computational results. Comparisons and evaluations of the Seasat results were obtained in terms of different solution types such as the Doppler only, Laser only, Doppler and Laser, etc. Other investigation using the Seasat data were made in order to determine their effect on the computational results at this particular level of consistency.

Deep Learning Coordinate-Free Quantum Chemistry

Computing quantum chemical properties of small molecules and polymers can provide insights valuable to physicists, chemists and biologists when designing new materials, catalysts, biological probes and drugs. Deep learning can compute quantum chemical properties accurately in a fraction of the time required by commonly used methods such as density functional theory (DFT). However, many of these deep learning architectures require energy minimized molecular geometries as input, which is also computationally expensive, and decreasing the reproducibility and throughput of these methods. In this study, we demonstrate that accurate quantum chemical computations can be performed without optimized geometries by operating in the coordinate-free domain using deep learning on graph encodings. Furthermore, we also find that the choice of graph-encoding architecture substantially affects the performance of these methods. The Wave architecture outperforms graph convolution architectures, particularly on complex molecules. Furthermore, the structures of these graph encoding architectures provide an opportunity to probe an important, outstanding question in quantum mechanics: What types of quantum chemical properties can be represented by local-variable models? We find that Wave, a local-variable model, is more accurately calculates quantum chemical properties. Graph convolutional architectures require global variables, and are not as effective as as Wave. We anticipate that coordinate-free, deep-learning models of quantum chemistry will become valuable tools in chemistry and biology, enabling researchers to rapidly screen chemical databases or identify new molecules using automated, de-novo design algorithms.

MSTor 2023 : A new version of the computer code for multistructural torsional anharmonicity, now with automatic torsional identification using redundant internal coordinates

The MSTor program is a computer program for calculating partition functions and thermodynamic functions of complex gas-phase molecules with multiple torsions; the multi-structural approximation with torsional anharmonicity (MS-T) can be used based on either a coupled torsional potential or an uncoupled torsional potential. The program can also carry out calculations in the multiple-structure local harmonic (MS-LH) approximation or multi-structural local quasiharmonic (MS-LQ) approximation or by the dual-level MS-T method. Furthermore, the program package includes eight utility codes that can be used as stand-alone programs to help the user to generate the input files for the code or to generate comparison results. The 2023 version of MSTor includes a new capability, namely automatic identification of torsional modes with redundant internal coordinates.

Group-oriented coordination models for distributed client-server computing

This paper describes group-oriented control models for distributed client-server interactions. These models transparently coordinate requests for services that involve multiple servers, such as queries across distributed databases. Specific capabilities include: decomposing and replicating client requests; dispatching request subtasks or copies to independent, networked servers; and combining server results into a single response for the client. The control models were implemented by combining request broker and process group technologies with an object-oriented communication middleware tool. The models are illustrated in the context of a distributed operations support application for space-based systems.

An experimental and computational investigation of the transport of Reynolds stress in an axisymmetric swirling boundary layer

A coordinated experimental and computational investigation of the transport and interaction of the individual Reynolds stresses within a turbulent axisymmetric swirling boundary layer flowing over a stationary cylinder is described. The cylinder is instrumented with new directional surface fence skin-friction gages developed for the experiment. The longitudinal and transverse mean velocity profiles are measured with a miniature directional pressure probe. These data provided a standard on which to compare computed results employing a variety of turbulence models. The turbulence models tested range from a simple mixing length model, through a two-equation model, on to the Reynolds stress equation models. The full Reynolds stress equation models are tested with various sets of modeling coefficients for the pressure rate-of-strain correlation. It is shown that while even the simplest model shows the general features of the data, agreement with the experimental data is enhanced through the use of the more complex models. For a better prediction of the data, however, further model improvement is still required.

Unleashed from constrained optimization: quantum computing for quantum chemistry employing generator coordinate inspired method

Hybrid quantum-classical approaches offer potential solutions to quantum chemistry problems, yet they often manifest as constrained optimization problems. Here, we explore the interconnection between constrained optimization and generalized eigenvalue problems through the Unitary Coupled Cluster (UCC) excitation generators. Inspired by the generator coordinate method, we employ these UCC excitation generators to construct non-orthogonal, overcomplete many-body bases, projecting the system Hamiltonian into an effective Hamiltonian, which bypasses issues such as barren plateaus that heuristic numerical minimizers often encountered in standard variational quantum eigensolver (VQE). Diverging from conventional quantum subspace expansion methods, we introduce an adaptive scheme that robustly constructs the many-body basis sets from a pool of the UCC excitation generators. This scheme supports the development of a hierarchical ADAPT quantum-classical strategy, enabling a balanced interplay between subspace expansion and ansatz optimization to address complex, strongly correlated quantum chemical systems cost-effectively, setting the stage for more advanced quantum simulations in chemistry.
