Modernizing Fortran 77 Legacy Codes

An incremental approach to modernization of scientific software written in the Fortran 77 computing language has been developed. This approach makes it possible to preserve the investment in legacy Fortran software while augmenting the software with modern capabilities to satisfy expanded requirements. This approach could be advantageous (1) in situations in which major rewriting of application programs is undesirable or impossible, or (2) as a means of transition to major rewriting.

Python & Qt, Powerful Tools for Technical Computing

The objective of this presentation is to give a brief overview of Python computer language and Qt for Python which provides an interface to Python for building graphical applications. The Qt language provides a method for rapid programming of Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) that are highly scalable, robust and platform independent. Both Python and Qt provide a powerful set of tools for Dynamic Analysis which are based on Open-Source software. Many problems and calculations in Structural Dynamics such as Power Spectral Density, Shock Response Spectrum and Vibration Response Spectrum can be easily calculated using these tools. The advantage of using Open-Source software is the ability to create custom graphical user interfaces similar to Matlab without the expense of software licensing and the ability to customize the software to an organization's specific needs. Also, another advantage is the ability to know which algorithms are being used by the GUI, know the numerical limitations and scale to large size data sets. I will end the presentation by demonstrating a Structural Dynamics GUI I created that was designed primarily to interactively analyze Post Flight high speed data provided by the ground station telemetry networks.

The SkyView Data Model: Handling Heterogeneous Data Using Dynamic Software

The SkyView Virtual Telescope allows users to query over 75 distinct datasets of astronomical imagery including more than 190 distinct surveys. These holdings are extraordinarily diverse ranging over more than 15 orders of magnitude in frequency and5 orders of magnitude in resolution. To accommodate supporting these data, SkyView has developed a simple data model for surveys. Nor surprisingly, given the diverse origins of the datasets included, some surveys do not easily fit within this model. The conventional approach to dealing with such outliers is to build a layer on top of the actual data which more faithfully adheres to the data model. With SkyView we have used a somewhat alternative approach. We allow the data model to define new behaviors in the SkyView code itself either by customizing the use of existing capabilities or pointing to new classes that have non-standard behavior. This approach is feasible since in modern computer languages the code that is run can be selected dynamically with new classes completely overriding traditional behavior. This paper describes this approach and considers how it may become more useful as our software structures become increasingly dynamically linked.

Six-degree-of-freedom missile simulation using the ADI AD 100 digital computer and ADSIM simulation language

The use of an AD 100 computer and the ADSIM language in the six-degree-of-freedom digital simulation of an air-to-ground missile is illustrated. The missile is launched from a moving platform, typically a helicopter, and is capable of striking a mobile target up to 10 kilometers away. The missile could be any tactical missile. The performance numbers of the AD 100 show that it is possible to implement a high performance missile model in a real-time simulation without the problems associated with an implementation on a general purpose computer using FORTRAN.

Language evolution and human-computer interaction

Many of the issues that confront designers of interactive computer systems also appear in natural language evolution. Natural languages and human-computer interfaces share as their primary mission the support of extended 'dialogues' between responsive entities. Because in each case one participant is a human being, some of the pressures operating on natural languages, causing them to evolve in order to better support such dialogue, also operate on human-computer 'languages' or interfaces. This does not necessarily push interfaces in the direction of natural language - since one entity in this dialogue is not a human, this is not to be expected. Nonetheless, by discerning where the pressures that guide natural language evolution also appear in human-computer interaction, we can contribute to the design of computer systems and obtain a new perspective on natural languages.

Fusing Symbolic and Numerical Diagnostic Computations

X-2000 Anomaly Detection Language denotes a developmental computing language, and the software that establishes and utilizes the language, for fusing two diagnostic computer programs, one implementing a numerical analysis method, the other implementing a symbolic analysis method into a unified event-based decision analysis software system for realtime detection of events (e.g., failures) in a spacecraft, aircraft, or other complex engineering system. The numerical analysis method is performed by beacon-based exception analysis for multi-missions (BEAMs), which has been discussed in several previous NASA Tech Briefs articles. The symbolic analysis method is, more specifically, an artificial-intelligence method of the knowledge-based, inference engine type, and its implementation is exemplified by the Spacecraft Health Inference Engine (SHINE) software. The goal in developing the capability to fuse numerical and symbolic diagnostic components is to increase the depth of analysis beyond that previously attainable, thereby increasing the degree of confidence in the computed results. In practical terms, the sought improvement is to enable detection of all or most events, with no or few false alarms.

Determination of quadric equation coefficients describing three-dimensional surfaces, their constraint and skewed planes, and view point areas

Mathematical model and a digital computer BLITZ language programming technique computes coefficients of quadric equations describing cylinders, paraboloids, ellipsoids, or planes with any orientation to a reference system, coordinates of a vector, and coefficients of quadric surfaces which limit the surface of three-dimensional space.

Computer hardware description languages - A tutorial

The paper introduces hardware description languages (HDL) as useful tools for hardware design and documentation. The capabilities and limitations of HDLs are discussed along with the guidelines needed in selecting an appropriate HDL. The directions for future work are provided and attention is given to the implementation of HDLs in microcomputers.
