Study of the Effect of a Closed-End Side Branch on Sinusoidally Perturbed Flow of Liquid in a Line

Classical undamped acoustic-wave theory was used to determine analytical relations among sinusoidal perturbations of pressure and flow at the ends of a hydraulic-transmission line having a closed-end branch of arbitrary length attached at an arbitrary point. Experimental data were obtained for the equilateral case (a branch half as long as the main line connected to the main line at the midpoint) at mean flow speeds of 5 to 10 feet per second. Measured pressure-perturbation ratios agreed closely with analytical predictions. As frequencies for which the branch length was an odd multiple of 1/4 wavelength, waves in the main line were almost completely reflected at the junction point.

Inflatable O-ring seal would ease closing of hatch cover plate

Inflatable O-ring seal provides positive sealing means that does not require the manual exertion of a large compressive force during opening or closing of a rotary-type hatch cover plate. The O-ring is deflated during opening and closing and inflated after closure by a gas pressure source.

An exact closed form solution for constant area compressible flow with friction and heat transfer

The well-known differential equation for the one-dimensional flow of a compressible fluid with heat transfer and wall friction has no known solution in closed form for the general case. This report presents a closed form solution for the special case of constant heat flux per unit length and constant specific heat. The solution was obtained by choosing the square of a dimensionless flow parameter as one of the independent variables to describe the flow. From this exact solution, an approximate simplified form is derived that is applicable for predicting subsonic flow performance characteristics for many types of constant area passages in internal flow. The data included in this report are considered sufficiently accurate for use as a guide in analyzing and designing internal gas flow systems.

Closed anisotropic cosmological models.

Derivation of a new exact solution to Einstein's equations representing homogeneous nonisotropic cosmological models of a closed universe containing electromagnetic and scalar fields. This solution reduces to a generalization of Brill's electromagnetic universe when the scalar field vanishes, and to the Taub-NUT-M space when both these fields vanish. The solutions also satisfy the scalar tensor equations and represent a universe containing electromagnetic fields and a source-free solution to the scalar-tensor equations representing a closed universe.

Precision closed bomb calorimeter for testing flame and gas producing initiators

A calorimeter has been developed under this study to help meet the needs of accurate performance monitoring of electrically or mechanically actuated flame and gas producing devices, such as squib-type initiators. A ten cubic centimeter closed bomb (closed volume) calorimeter was designed to provide a standard pressure trace and to measure a nominal 50 calorie output, using the basic components of a Parr Model 1411 calorimeter. Two prototype bombs were fabricated, pressure tested to 2600 psi, and extensively evaluated.

An error criterion for determining sampling rates in closed-loop control systems

The determination of an error criterion which will give a sampling rate for adequate performance of linear, time-invariant closed-loop, discrete-data control systems was studied. The proper modelling of the closed-loop control system for characterization of the error behavior, and the determination of an absolute error definition for performance of the two commonly used holding devices are discussed. The definition of an adequate relative error criterion as a function of the sampling rate and the parameters characterizing the system is established along with the determination of sampling rates. The validity of the expressions for the sampling interval was confirmed by computer simulations. Their application solves the problem of making a first choice in the selection of sampling rates.

On the feasibility of closed-loop control of intra-aortic balloon pumping

A closed-loop control scheme for the control of intra-aortic balloon pumping has been developed and tested in dog experiments. A performance index reflecting the general objectives of balloon-assist pumping is developed and a modified steepest ascent control algorithm is utilized for the selection of a proper operating point for the balloon during its pumping cycle. This paper attempts to indicate the feasibility of closed-loop control of balloon pumping, and particularly its flexibility in achieving both diastolic augmentation of mean aortic pressure and control of the level of end-diastolic pressure (EDP) an important factor in reducing heart work.

The galactic space frequency of close binary systems

An investigation of the galactic space frequency of close binary systems and other stars with high angular momentum is made on the basis of several criteria for the binary nature of a star. Within an accessible range of 3 kpc around the sun, which includes parts of three spiral arms, there occurs no significant variation (to within a factor of about 2) in the space frequencies of B-type radial-velocity variables, M-type supergiants with blue companions, and Be stars. Implications of this result for the problems of the origin of close binary systems, the distribution of angular momentum in the Galaxy, and the relative numbers of blue and red supergiants are discussed.

The partially closed Griffith crack

A solution is presented for a Griffith crack subjected to an arbitrary polynomial loading function which causes one end of the crack to remain closed. Closed form expressions are presented for the crack opening length and for the stress and displacements in the plane of the crack. The special case of pure bending is presented as an example and for this case the stress intensity factor is computed.

Parameter estimation in linear models of the human operator in a closed loop with application of deterministic test signals

Parameter estimation techniques are discussed with emphasis on unbiased estimates in the presence of noise. A distinction between open and closed loop systems is made. A method is given based on the application of external forcing functions consisting of a sun of sinusoids; this method is thus based on the estimation of Fourier coefficients and is applicable for models with poles and zeros in open and closed loop systems.

An analysis of hydrogen production via closed-cycle schemes

A thermodynamic analysis and state-of-the-art review of three basic schemes for production of hydrogen from water: electrolysis, thermal water-splitting, and multi-step thermochemical closed cycles is presented. Criteria for work-saving thermochemical closed-cycle processes are established, and several schemes are reviewed in light of such criteria. An economic analysis is also presented in the context of energy costs.

Error analysis for the proposed close grid geodynamic satellite measurement system (CLOGEOS)

The close grid geodynamic measurement system experiment which envisages an active ranging satellite and a grid of retro-reflectors or transponders in the San Andreas fault area is a detailed simulated study for recovering the relative positions in the grid. The close grid geodynamic measurement system for determining the relative motion of two plates in the California region (if feasible) could be used in other areas of the world to delineate and complete the picture of crustal motions over the entire globe and serve as a geodetic survey system. In addition, with less stringent accuracy standards, the system would also find usage in allied geological and marine geodesy fields.

Rotational excitation of symmetric top molecules by collisions with atoms: Close coupling, coupled states, and effective potential calculations for NH3-He

The formalism for describing rotational excitation in collisions between symmetric top rigid rotors and spherical atoms is presented both within the accurate quantum close coupling framework and also the coupled states approximation of McGuire and Kouri and the effective potential approximation of Rabitz. Calculations are reported for thermal energy NH3-He collisions, treating NH3 as a rigid rotor and employing a uniform electron gas (Gordon-Kim) approximation for the intermolecular potential. Coupled states are found to be in nearly quantitative agreement with close coupling results while the effective potential method is found to be at least qualitatively correct. Modifications necessary to treat the inversion motion in NH3 are discussed.
