Multicomponent Reactions Among Alkyl Isocyanides, sp Reactants, and sp 2 Carbon Cages

We explored the reactivity and substrate scope of the reactions among an alkyl isocyanide, an sp-hybridized reactant (i.e. alkyne or allene), and a carbon cage, as a new approach to functionalize fullerenes and metallofullerenes. Furthermore, this account summarizes the key findings in our recent published work, and some original data for the reaction involving an isocyanide, allenes, and metallofullerene Lu 3 N@C 80 .

Vanishing RKKY interactions in Ce-based cage compounds

Abstract We report the results of thermodynamic measurements in external magnetic field of the cubic Ce-based cage compounds Ce T 2 Cd 20 ( T = Ni,Pd). Our analysis of the heat-capacity data shows that the Γ 7 doublet is the ground state multiplet of the Ce 3+ ions. Consequently, for the Γ 7 doublet it can be theoretically shown that the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida interaction between the localized Ce moments mediated by the conduction electrons, must vanish at temperatures much lower than the energy separating the ground state doublet from the first excited Γ 8 quartet. Our findings provide an insight as to why no long range order has been observed in these compounds down to temperatures in the milliKelvin range.

Electrode Cage for Hydrogen Production

3D design documents for 3D printing. The holes in the electrode cage are designed to condense hydrogen into progressively larger bubbles, and to direct the flow of hydrogen from the cathode up and out of the bioreactor so it is kept away from the anode and collected as nearly pure hydrogen.

Up-Tower Investigation of Main Bearing Cage Slip and Loads

This paper described the operational conditions of an SRB in the main bearing position of a three-point mount wind turbine drivetrain. A commercial wind turbine was instrumented to measure load characteristics on the outer ring of the bearing, which were used to examine the roller load characteristics qualitatively and the cage slip quantitatively in a range of operational states. Further, a simple analytic model estimated the bearing loads and was used as input conditions to a three-dimensional finite element model. The finite element roller load results were compared to the measurements and contact stresses were also described.

Application of bicyclic and cage compounds

The results of a literature survey of the field of bicyclic and cage compounds were presented, with the objective of identifying those types of compounds with unusual physical and chemical stability, and determining what practical applications have been found for these compounds. Major applications have been as polymers, polymer additives, medicinals, and pesticides. Lesser applications have included fuels, fuel additives, lubricants, lubricant additives, and perfumes. Several areas where further work might be useful were also outlined; these are primarily in the areas of polymers, polymer additives, medicinals, and synthetic lubricants.

Appropriateness of the small-cage-reared rat as a model for the study of altered-activity effects

Within genetically imposed limits, the fatigue-resistance capability of muscle varies according to the chronic demands of usage imposed on the muscle. Given the fiber-type distribution within a muscle, its fatigue-resistance can be utilized as an indicant of its physiological status. It is suggested that the hindlimb musculature of rats raised in cages constructed to minimum DFA specifications are physiologically inappropriate for the study of altered-activity effects. This proposition is based upon two observations from the medial gastrocnemius muscle (n = 7) of Sprague-Dawley rats (500 g, 100 d); first, a substantial disparity in the peak forces (twitch and tetanic) elicited by neural and direct-muscle stimulation, and second, a reduction in force during the fatigue test (2 min of 1 Hz trains with each train lasting 330 ms and including 13 stimuli) that was greater (79%) than theoretically expected (62%). Both of these observations are critically assessed.

Measuring Bearing-Cage Rotation

Bearing slip measured optically. Concept for measuring rotational speed of bearing cage promises to be simple and accurate. Based on fiber optics, requires no contact between measuring device and bearing, and would not introduce wear.

Atoms in carbon cages as a source of interstellar diffuse lines

A model to describe the resonance absorption lines of various atoms trapped in closed carbon cages is presented. These systems may be responsible for some of the as yet unexplained diffuse interstellar bands. Model potentials for possible atom-C60 systems are obtained and used to calculate the resonance lines. The trapped atoms considered are O, N, Si, Mg, Al, Na, and S, and in all cases the resonance lines are shifted toward the red as compared to the isolated atoms. The calculated wavelengths are compared to the range of wavelengths observed for the diffuse interstellar bands, and good agreement is found for Mg and Si resonance lines. Other lines may be caused by other than resonance transitions or by trapped molecules. The oscillator strengths and the abundances are evaluated and compared with observation. Mechanisms to explain the observed band width of the lines and the existence of certain correlated pairs of lines are discussed.

Screen Cage Ion Plating (SCIP) and scratch testing of polycrystalline aluminum oxide

A screen cage ion plating (SCIP) technique was developed to apply silver films on electrically nonconducting aluminum oxide. It is shown that SCIP has remarkable throwing power; surfaces to be coated need not be in direct line of sight with the evaporation source. Scratch tests, employing a diamond stylus with a 200 micro m radius tip, were performed on uncoated and on silver coated alumina. Subsequent surface analysis show that a significant amount of silver remains on the scratched surfaces, even in areas where high stylus load produced severe crack patterns in the ceramic. Friction coefficients were lowered during the scratch tests on the coated alumina indicating that this modification of the ion planting process should be useful for applying lubricating films of soft metals to electrical insulating materials. The very good throwing power of SCIP also strongly suggests general applicability of this process in other areas of technology, e.g., electronics, in addition to tribology.

Screen-Cage Ion Plating Of Silver On Polycrystalline Alumina

Screen-cage ion plating (SCIP) cost-effective technique offering high throwing power for deposition of adherent metal films on ceramic substrates. Applies silver films to complexly shaped substrates of polycrystalline alumina. Silver adheres tenaciously and reduces friction. SCIP holds promise for applying lubricating soft metallic films to high-temperature ceramic components of advanced combustion engines. Other potential uses include coating substrates with metal for protection against corrosion, depositing electrical conductors on dielectric substrates, making optically reflective or electrically or thermally conductive surface layers, and applying decorative metal coats to ceramic trophies or sculptures.

Molecular Static Third-Order Polarizabilities of Carbon-Cage Fullerenes and their Correlation with Three Geometric Parameters: Group Order, Aromaticity, and Size

Calculations were performed on the valence contribution to the static molecular third-order polarizabilities (gamma) of thirty carbon-cage fullerenes (C60, C70, five isomers of C78, and twenty-three isomers of C84). The molecular structures were obtained from B3LYP/STO-3G calculations. The values of the tensor elements and an associated numerical uncertainty were obtained using the finite-field approach and polynomial expansions of orders four to eighteen of polarization versus static electric field data. The latter information was obtained from semiempirical calculations using the AM1 hamiltonian.

Catalytic Metal Free Production of Large Cage Structure Carbon Particles: A Candidate for Hydrogen Storage

We will demonstrate that carbon particles consisting of large cages can be produced without catalytic metal. The carbon particles were produced in CO gas as well as by introduction of 5% methane gas into the CO gas. The gas-produced carbon particles were able to absorb approximately 16.2 wt% of hydrogen. This value is 2.5 times higher than the 6.5 wt% goal for the vehicular hydrogen storage proposed by the Department of Energy in the USA. Therefore, we believe that this carbon particle is an excellent candidate for hydrogen storage for fuel cells.
