Fabrication of thin layer beta alumina

Beta alumina tubes having walls 700 microns, 300 microns, and 140 microns were processed by extrusion and sintering utilizing Ford proprietary binder and fabrication systems. Tubes prepared by this method have properties similar to tubes prepared by isostatic pressing and sintering, i.e. density greater than 98% of theoretical and a helium leak rate less than 3 x 10 to the -9th power cc/sq cm/sec. Ford ultrasonic bonding techniques were used for bonding beta alumina end caps to open ended beta -alumina tubes prior to sintering. After sintering, the bond was hermetic, and the integrity of the bonded area was comparable to the body of the tube.

Mode identification in Beta Cephei stars

The essential observational characteristics related to mode identification are summarized. Major emphasis is placed on the following: both light and velocity amplitudes; typical periods in both light and radial velocity; the light curve for Beta Cephei stars in comparison to the classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars; the van Hoof effect with respect to the radial velocity curves in many Beta Cephei stars; and the line profiles of many Beta Cephei stars.

Beta experiment

A focused laser doppler velocimeter (LDV) system was developed for the measurement of atmospheric backscatter (beta) from aerosols at infrared wavelengths. A Doppler signal generator was used in mapping the coherent sensitive focal volume of a focused LDV system. System calibration data was analyzed during the flight test activity scheduled for the Beta system. These analyses were performed to determine the acceptability of the Beta measurement system's performance.

Finite-beta stabilization of the universal drift instability - Revisited

A numerical study has been made of the universal drift instability in finite beta plasmas, and a marginal stability curve has been plotted. Several limits have been considered to illustrate the various influences of finite beta. The mode is found to be stable for beta larger than or equal to 0.135; the most difficult waves to stabilize are those that have arbitrarily small wavenumbers. The stabilization mechanism is the ion Landau resonance which is enhanced by the coupling of electrostatic and transverse electromagneticc oscillations.

Venus gravity - Analysis of Beta Regio

Radio tracking data acquired over Beta Regio were analyzed to obtain a surface mass distribution from which a detailed vertical gravity field was derived. In addition, a corresponding vertical gravity field was evaluated solely from the topography of the Beta region. A comparison of these two maps confirms the strong correlation between gravity and topography which was previously seen in line-of-sight gravity maps. It also demonstrates that the observed gravity is a significant fraction of that predicted from the topography alone. The effective depth of complete isostatic compensation for the Beta region is estimated to be 330 km, which is somewhat deeper than that found for other areas of Venus.

'Stabilization' of the lower-hybrid-drift instability in finite-beta plasmas

The stability properties of the lower-hybrid-drift instability are reexamined for finite-beta plasmas. In contrast to previous results, it is found that finite-beta does not stabilize the instability in the sense that the growth rate becomes negative. Rather, as beta increases, the fastest growing mode shifts to longer wavelengths and makes a transition to an ion-cyclotron mode when the growth rate falls below the ion-cyclotron frequency.

Outer atmospheres of cool stars. XIV - A model for the chromosphere and transition region of Beta Ceti (G9.5 III)

In the present chromospheric and transition region model for Beta Ceti, which is consistent with IUE spectra of the Mg II, C II, and C IV resonance lines, the Mg II h and k lines are treated in partial redistribution and the C II and C IV lines in complete redistribution. Computed line fluxes are presented for a range of models to show the range of permitted temperature structures. A comparison of the Beta Ceti model to models previously computed in a similar way for other stars shows a trend of decreasing chromospheric pressures and increasing geometric scales as single stars evolve across the transition region boundary. The present analysis also suggests that transition region pressures drastically decrease and geometric scales rapidly increase as single giant stars evolve to the right, toward the boudnary. Beta Ceti's exceptional X-ray brightness is discussed.

Low-Temperature Forming of Beta Titanium Alloys

Low cost methods for titanium structural fabrication using advanced cold-formable beta alloys were investigated for application in a Mach 2.7 supersonic cruise vehicle. This work focuses on improving processing and structural efficiencies as compared with standard hot formed and riveted construction of alpha-beta alloy sheet structure. Mechanical property data and manufacturing parameters were developed for cold forming, brazing, welding, and processing Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al sheet, and Ti-3Al-8V-6Cr-4Zr on a more limited basis. Cost and structural benefits were assessed through the fabrication and evaluation of large structural panels. The feasibility of increasing structural efficiency of beta titanium structure by selective reinforcement with metal matrix composite was also explored.

The scattering of energetic particles by waves in a finite beta plasma

Solutions are presented for the dispersion relation of waves propagating parallel to the ambient magnetic field, in a plasma having an arbitrary ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure, beta. Previous results applicable only to wave frequencies much lower than the ion cyclotron frequency are extended to include all frequencies lower than the electron cyclotron frequency. The cyclotron turnovers are found to occur at significantly lower frequencies in finite beta plasmas. Cyclotron damping is significant for small wavelength waves. These results show that in energetic particle scattering by electromagnetic turbulence in a plasma with beta value greater than 40, scattering by waves with wave frequencies greater than the ion cyclotron frequency can be neglected. This condition is satisfied in many astrophysical plasmas.

H-beta line variability in magnetic Ap stars. I

Preliminary results of photometric measurements of H-beta in several Ap stars are presented. Periodic variations are found certainly in Theta Aur and Alpha (2) CVn, and possibly in Phi Dra. For the other stars upper limits for variations of H-beta are determined. Observed amplitudes are transformed into variations of equivalent width assuming specific profile variations. The results show that variations of equivalent width of H-beta in the stars investigated are of the order of 10 percent or less.

Cyclic oxidation behavior of beta+gamma overlay coatings on gamma and gamma+gamma-prime alloys

Detailed experimental studies of the cyclic oxidation behavior of low-pressure plasma sprayed beta+gamma coasting on gamma-phase Ni-Cr-Al alloys have shown the correlation of weight change, oxide type, and Cr and Al concentration-distance profiles as a function of oxidation time. Of special interest was the transition to breakway oxidation due to the loss of the Al flux to the oxide and the failure of the coated alloy to form an Al2O3-rich oxide scale. The experimental results on beta+gamma/gamma coating systems were used as the basis of a numerical model (ternary, semi-infinite, finite-difference analysis) which accurately predicted changes in Cr and Al concentration-distance profiles. The model was used to study parameters critical to enhancing the life of coatings which fail by a combination of Al loss in forming the oxide scale and Al loss via interdiffusion with the substrate alloy. Comparisons of beta+gamma/gamma coating behavior are made to the oxidation of coated gamma+gamma-prime substrates, both ternary Ni-Cr-Al alloys and Mar-M 247-type alloys.

Prospecting for planets in circumstellar dust - Sifting the evidence from Beta Pictoris

IRAS and near-IR coronographic data for the A5V star Beta Pic are analyzed for evidence of planetary formation. The light scattered from the central star in the system is integrated along the distance to the star to determine the disk magnitude at various distances from the star. A modified gamma distribution is applied to evaluate the scattering coefficient to test a hypothesis that the inner 30 AU of the disk has been swept out by planets. The scattering from the region around Beta Pic is compared with scattering around other A5V stars. Finally, the IR data at 0.89 micron is compared with scattering at the coronograph wavelengths. No evidence is found to support the hypothesis of clearing in the inner disk, although large particle densities can be found very close to Beta Pic. The study illustrates the effectiveness of using scattered light and IR data to discover and characterize matter distributions circumstellar disks.

Improved beta-SiC heteroepitaxial films using off-axis Si substrates

All beta-SiC films grown using on-axis (001) Si substrates that have been examined with transmission electron microscopy exhibit a high density of interfacial twins, stacking faults, and antiphase disorder. The antiphase boundaries can be decorated by chemical etching, sputter etching, wet oxidation, and beta-SiC growth in the presence of diborane. All traces of antiphase disorder are eliminated when the heteroepitaxial growth is carried out on vicinal (001) Si substrates that are tilted 2 deg about a 110-line axis. In addition, growth on the off-axis Si produces beta-SiC films that are significantly smoother than on-axis films. The density of stacking faults is apparently unaffected by growth on the off-axis substrates.

Far-ultraviolet observations of the Delta-Scuti variable Beta Cassiopeiae

FUV (115-200-nm) observations of Beta Cas, obtained at resolutions 5 and 0.15 A by the IUE during September 1984, are reported and analyzed. The data are presented graphically and compared with results for Procyon, a sharp-lined F star similar in temperature to Beta Cas. A sharp factor-of-two increase in H I Ly-alpha flux on a time scale comparable to its Delta Sct pulsation period was observed, but the data were insufficient to determine whether the increase was flarelike or pulsation-related. The outer edges of the Beta Cas emission are shown to be significantly wider than those of Procyon.

Meso-beta scale simulations of convective cloud systems over Florida utilizing synthetic data derived from GOES satellite imagery

An attempt is made to improve the simulation of the meso-alpha and meso-beta scales' precipitation distribution over the Florida peninsula during the warm season through improvement of the initialization of beta scale convective cloud systems, using GOES IR and visible satellite imagery. These data can be used to define the location and spatial extent of meso-beta scale cloud systems at a specified time. Attention is presently given to the results of the first phase of this study, in which only moisture information was synthesized from the satellite imagery.

500-3200 A observations of the interacting binary stars V356 Sgr and Beta Lyr

Results on VG356 Sgr and Beta Lyr are presented from the Voyager UV spectrometers and the IUE. The observations of V356 Sgr cover two eclipses in which the total strength of the UV emission lines were invariant. At wavelengths shorter than 1600 A, an uneclipsed UV continuum was found. A model for the origin of the circumstellar matter in V356 Sgr is given. The UV observations of Beta Lyr show a strong far-UV continuum down to 912 A. The spectral shape fo the far-UV continuum closely resembles that of a UX Uma-type cataclysmic variable. Analysis of the Beta Lyr data indicates that the central object is small, with a radius on the order of 1 solar radius or less.

HgI2 low energy beta particle detector

An HgI2 device structure was designed and tested which allows HgI2 to be used to make low-energy beta-particle detectors. The devices detected tritium beta particles with an efficiency of about 25 percent. A protective encapsulant has been developed which should protect the devices for up to 20 years and will attenuate only a small fraction of the beta particles. It is noted that the devices hold significant promise to provide a practical alternative to liquid scintillation counters and gas flow-through proportional counters.
