Ring currents modulate optoelectronic properties of aromatic chromophores at 25 T

The properties of organic molecules can be influenced by magnetic fields, and these magnetic field effects are diverse. They range from inducing nuclear Zeeman splitting for structural determination in NMR spectroscopy to polaron Zeeman splitting organic spintronics and organic magnetoresistance. A pervasive magnetic field effect on an aromatic molecule is the aromatic ring current, which can be thought of as an induction of a circular current of π-electrons upon the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to the π-system of the molecule. While in NMR spectroscopy the effects of ring currents on the chemical shifts of nearby protons are relatively well understood, and even predictable, the consequences of these modified electronic states on the spectroscopy of molecules has remained unknown. In this work, we find that photophysical properties of model phthalocyanine compounds and their aggregates display clear magnetic field dependences up to 25 T, with the aggregates showing more drastic magnetic field sensitivities depending on the intermolecular interactions with the amplification of ring currents in stacked aggregates. These observations are consistent with ring currents measured in NMR spectroscopy and simulated in time-dependent density functional theory calculations of magnetic field-dependent phthalocyanine monomer and dimer absorption spectra. Here, we propose that ring currents in organic semiconductors, which commonly comprise aromatic moieties, may present new opportunities for the understanding and exploitation of combined optical, electronic, and magnetic properties.

Anomalous Hall effect at the Lifshitz transition in ZrTe 5

Zirconium pentatelluride ZrTe 5 is a topological semimetal. The presence of a temperature-induced Lifshitz transition, in which the Fermi level goes from the conduction band to the valence band with increasing temperature, provides unique opportunities to study the interplay between Fermi-surface topology, dynamics of Dirac fermions, and Berry curvature in one system. Here we present a combined experimental and theoretical study and show that a low-energy model can be used to understand the complicated Hall response and large anomalous Hall effect observed in ZrTe 5 over a wide range of temperature and magnetic field. We found that the anomalous Hall contribution dominates the Hall response in a narrow temperature window around the Lifshitz transition, away from which the orbital contribution dominates. Moreover, our results indicate that a topological phase transition coexists with the Lifshitz transition. To conclude, our model provides a unifying framework to understand the Hall effect in semimetals with large Zeeman splitting and nontrivial topology.

Phonon-exciton Interactions in WSe 2 under a quantizing magnetic field

Strong many-body interaction in two-dimensional transitional metal dichalcogenides provides a unique platform to study the interplay between different quasiparticles, such as prominent phonon replica emission and modified valley-selection rules. A large out-of-plane magnetic field is expected to modify the exciton-phonon interactions by quantizing excitons into discrete Landau levels, which is largely unexplored. Here, we observe the Landau levels originating from phonon-exciton complexes and directly probe exciton-phonon interaction under a quantizing magnetic field. Phonon-exciton interaction lifts the inter-Landau-level transition selection rules for dark trions, manifested by a distinctively different Landau fan pattern compared to bright trions. This allows us to experimentally extract the effective mass of both holes and electrons. The onset of Landau quantization coincides with a significant increase of the valley-Zeeman shift, suggesting strong many-body effects on the phonon-exciton interaction. Our work demonstrates monolayer WSe 2 as an intriguing playground to study phonon-exciton interactions and their interplay with charge, spin, and valley.

Spin-singlet topological superconductivity in the attractive Rashba-Hubbard model

Fully gapped, spin-singlet superconductors with antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling in a Zeeman magnetic field provide a promising route to realize superconducting states with non-Abelian topological order and therefore fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here we use a quantum Monte Carlo dynamical cluster approximation to study the superconducting properties of a doped two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a Zeeman magnetic field. We generally find that the Rashba coupling has a beneficial effect towards s-wave superconductivity. In the presence of a finite Zeeman field, when superconductivity is suppressed by Pauli pair breaking, the Rashba coupling counteracts the spin imbalance created by the Zeeman field by mixing the spins, and thus restores superconductivity at finite temperatures. Further, we show that this favorable effect of the spin-orbit coupling is traced to a spin-flip driven enhancement of the amplitude for the propagation of a pair of electrons in time-reversed states. Moreover, by inspecting the Fermi surface of the interacting model, we show that for sufficiently large Rashba coupling and Zeeman field, the superconducting state is expected to be topologically nontrivial.

Critical temperature T c and Pauli limited critical field of Sr 2 RuO 4 : Uniaxial strain dependence

Variations of critical temperature T c and in-plane critical field H c 2 of Sr 2 Ru O 4 under uniaxial stress were recently reported. We compare the strain dependence of T c and H c 2 in various pairing channels ( d wave, extended s wave, and p -wave) with the experimental observations by studying a three-band tight-binding model that includes effects of spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings and a separable pairing interaction. Our study helps narrow down the possibility of pairing channels. The importance of the multiband nature of Sr 2 Ru O 4 is also highlighted.

The magnetic field of the BY Draconis flare star EQ Virginis

High resolution, high S/N-ratio line profiles of the BY Draconis-type flare star EQ Vir obtained with the MMT are presently subjected to a novel Zeeman analysis procedure which includes radiative transfer effects and compensation for blends. A mean field of 2500 + or - 300 G covering 80 + or 15 percent of EQ Vir is determined. This constitutes the first positive detection of a magnetic field in a BY Draconis-type flare star, confirming that magnetic fields are present on these stars. The value of 2500 G obtained for the photospheric field strength is similar to the value derived by assuming equipartition of magnetic and thermal energy densities in the photosphere and scaling from the solar network fields, suggesting that equipartition may determine the mean field strength in the nonspotted portion of the flare star photosphere.

Spin waves in doped graphene: A time-dependent spin density functional approach to collective excitations in paramagnetic two-dimensional Dirac fermion gases

In spin-polarized itinerant electron systems, collective spin-wave modes arise from dynamical exchange and correlation (xc) effects. We consider here spin waves in doped paramagnetic graphene with adjustable Zeeman-type band splitting. The spin waves are described using time-dependent spin density functional response theory, treating dynamical xc effects within the Slater and Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjölander approximations. We obtain spin-wave dispersions and spin stiffnesses as a function of doping and spin polarization, and we discuss the prospects for their experimental observation.

Zeeman observations of W Sgr

A new precise method for measuring magnetic fields on Zeeman plates of the southern Cepheid 'W Sgr' is reviewed. Ten plates over the 7.6(d) period of pulsation show two extrema in the measured values of the effective magnetic field. The method has a precision of + or - 0.4 microns in the Zeeman shift corresponding to + or - 50 Gauss (g). A negative spike of -220 g occurred at the time of arrival of the compressional wave of pulsation at the stellar surface. A positive field of +270 g occurred at the phase of most rapid contraction near the temperature minimum of the pulsation cycle.

Spin–orbit coupling proximity effect in MoS 2 /Fe 3 GeTe 2 heterostructures

Layered two-dimensional (2D) magnet/semiconductor heterostructures combine spintronic and optoelectronic properties of constituent materials, leading to new magneto-optical and magnetoelectric phenomena such as spontaneous emission of helical light and enhanced Zeeman splitting in single photon emission. While prior focus was mostly on the magnetic proximity effect, where properties of 2D magnets are transferred to nonmagnetic 2D materials, the inverse effect of 2D semiconductors altering 2D magnets is much less understood. Here, we fabricated and studied van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of 2D magnet Fe 3 GeTe 2 (FGT) and 2D semiconductor MoS 2 . With reflectance magnetic circular dichroism, we found that the coercive field of MoS 2 -covered FGT reduces compared with uncovered FGT, agreeing well with our first-principles calculations. With its strong spin–orbit coupling (SOC), MoS 2 effectively alters the crystal field of the adjacent FGT and its magnetic anisotropy. Furthermore, an unconventional two-step hysteresis loop emerges in MoS 2 /FGT as a result of the superposition of two regions of FGT: at the interface and away from the interface. Our experimental elucidation of the SOC proximity effect that MoS 2 exerts on FGT provides fundamental understanding for the rational development of 2D magnet/semiconductor heterostructures.

Spin Qubits in Germanium Structures with Phononic Gap

We propose qubits based on shallow donor electron spins in germanium structures with phononic gap. We consider a phononic crystal formed by periodic holes in Ge plate or a rigid cover / Ge layer / rigid substrate structure with gaps approximately a few GHz. The spin relaxation is suppressed dramatically, if the Zeeman frequency omegaZ is in the phononic gap, but an effective coupling between the spins of remote donors via exchange of virtual phonons remains essential. If omegaZ approaches to a gap edge in these structures, a long-range (limited by detuning of omegaZ) resonant exchange interaction takes place. We estimate that ratio of the exchange integral to the longitudinal relaxation rate exceeds 10(exp 5) and lateral scale of resonant exchange 0.1 mm. The exchange contribution can be verified under microwave pumping through oscillations of spin echo signal or through the differential absorption measurements. Efficient manipulation of spins due to the Rabi oscillations opens a new way for quantum information applications.

Nature of Hyperfine Interactions in TbPc 2 Single-Molecule Magnets: Multiconfigurational Ab Initio Study

Lanthanide-based single-ion magnetic molecules can have large magnetic hyperfine interactions as well as large magnetic anisotropy. Recent experimental studies reported tunability of these properties by changes of chemical environments or by application of external stimuli for device applications. In order to provide insight onto the origin and mechanism of such tunability, here we investigate the magnetic hyperfine and nuclear quadrupole interactions for a 159 Tb nucleus in TbPc 2 (Pc = phthalocyanine) single-molecule magnets using multiconfigurational ab initio methods including spin–orbit interaction. Since the electronic ground and first-excited (quasi)doublets are well separated in energy, the microscopic Hamiltonian can be mapped onto an effective Hamiltonian with an electronic pseudospin S = 1/2. From the ab initio calculated parameters, we find that the magnetic hyperfine coupling is dominated by the interaction of the Tb nuclear spin with electronic orbital angular momentum. The asymmetric 4f-like electronic charge distribution leads to a strong nuclear quadrupole interaction with significant transverse terms for the molecule with low symmetry. The ab initio calculated electronic–nuclear spectrum including the magnetic hyperfine and quadrupole interactions is in excellent agreement with the experiment. We further find that the transverse quadrupole interactions significantly influence the avoided level crossings in magnetization dynamics and that the molecular distortions affect mostly the Fermi contact terms as well as the transverse quadrupole interactions. Synopsis Hyperfine interactions for 159 Tb nucleus in TbPc 2 single-molecule magnets are investigated from first-principles using multiconfigurational calculations. Strong nuclear quadrupole and magnetic hyperfine coupling are found, with the latter being dominated by the paramagnetic spin-orbital mechanism. Furthermore, we construct an ab initio pseudospin Hamiltonian and obtain the electronic-nuclear spectrum that is in excellent agreement with experiment. The Zeeman diagram is calculated, and the magnetization dynamics is discussed. The effects of molecular distortions are researched.

Emerging nonlinear Hall effect in Kane-Mele two-dimensional topological insulators

We report the recent observations of nonlinear Hall effect in time-reversal symmetry protected systems and on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators due to an in-plane magnetic field have attracted immense experimental and theoretical investigations in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides and Weyl semimetals. The origin of this type of second order effect has been attributed to the emergence of a Berry curvature dipole, which requires a low-symmetry environment. Here, we propose a mechanism for generating such a second order nonlinear Hall effect in Kane-Mele two-dimensional topological insulators due to spatial and time reversal symmetry breaking in the presence of Zeeman and Rashba couplings. By actively tuning the energy gaps with external electromagnetic fields we also demonstrate that the nonlinear Hall effect shows remarkable signatures of topological phase transitions existing in the considered two-dimensional systems.

Anomalous conductivity due to relativistic Landau quantization

Here we use a recently developed kinetic model derived from the Dirac equation, in order to study electromagnetic wave propagation in superstrong magnetic fields, such as in magnetars, where relativistic Landau quantization is prominent. The leading contribution to the conductivity tensor in such a plasma is calculated. It is found that the electron Hall current has an anomalous contribution, in the quantum relativistic regime, where the effective particle energy has a significant contribution from the diamagnetic and Zeeman energy. As a result, a new quantum resonance frequency appears, and the dispersion relation for the left- and right-hand polarized modes are strongly modified for long and moderate wavelengths. The implications for magnetar physics are discussed.

Solar magnetic fields measurements with a magneto-optical filter

The presence of a magnetic field at different levels inside the sun has crucial implications for helioseismology. The solar oscillation observing program carried out since 1983 at Mt. Wilson with Cacciani magneto-optical filter has recently been modified to acquire full-disk magnetograms with 2 arcsec spatial resolution. A method for the correct determination of magnetic maps which are free of contamination by velocity signal is presented. It is shown that no cross-talk exists between the Doppler and Zeeman shifts of the Na D lines, provided that instrumental polarization effects are taken into account. The observed line-of-sight photospheric field was used to map the vector field in the inner corona, above active regions, in the current free approximation.

Superconducting diode effect in quasi-one-dimensional systems

The recent observations of the superconducting diode effect pose the challenge to fully understand the necessary ingredients for nonreciprocal phenomena in superconductors. In this theoretical work, we focus on the nonreciprocity of the critical current in a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor. We define the critical current as the value of the supercurrent at which the quasiparticle excitation gap closes (depairing). Once the critical current is exceeded, the quasiparticles can exchange energy with the superconducting condensate, giving rise to dissipation. Our minimal model can be microscopically derived as a low-energy limit of a Rashba spin-orbit coupled superconductor in a Zeeman field. Within the proposed model, we explore the nature of the nonreciprocal effects of the critical current both analytically and numerically. Further, our results quantify how system parameters such as spin-orbit coupling and quantum confinement affect the strength of the superconducting diode effect. Our theory provides a complementary description to Ginzburg-Landau theories of the effect.

Brightening of Dark States in CsPbBr 3 Quantum Dots Caused by Light–Induced Magnetism

Lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have shown great potential for optoelectronic and quantum photonic applications. Although controversy remains about the electronic fine structures of bulk perovskites due to the strong spin-orbit coupling affecting the conduction bands, compelling evidence indicates that the ground states of perovskite QDs remain dark, limiting their applications in optoelectronic devices. In this study, it is demonstrated that photoexcitation can induce large intrinsic magnetic fields in Mn-doped CsPbBr 3 perovskite QDs. Equivalent to applying an external magnetic field, the light-induced field causes giant Zeeman splitting to the bright triplet states and brightens the dark singlet ground state, thus effectively rendering a partially bright ground state in the doped QDs. These findings here may contribute to the understanding of the electronic fine structures in perovskite QDs and demonstrate a potential approach for creating semiconductor nanostructures that can serve as bright light sources.

Spectra of circularly polarized radiation from astrophysical OH masers

A striking feature of astrophysical masers is the tendency for either one or the other of the circular polarizations to dominate in the radiation from the strong, widely observed masing transitions of OH at 18 cm. Spectral line profiles are calculated for polarized maser radiation due to the combined effects of a velocity gradient and, as is indicated for these transitions, a Zeeman splitting that is at least comparable with the thermal contributions to the breadths of the spectral lines. The resulting spectral features are similar in appearance, including the presence of large net circular polarization and narrow line breadths, to the commonly observed spectra of OH masers in molecular clouds. The calculations presented here are performed as a function of frequency without making the approximations of a large velocity gradient. Rapid cross relaxation, which has been advocated by others for the OH masers, is assumed.
