The number-intensity distribution of X-ray sources observed by Uhuru.

The Uhuru catalog of X-ray sources is used to analyze the number versus apparent-intensity relation of X-ray objects, by constructing (log N, log S)-plots similar to those used in radio astronomy. The source number distribution is corrected for nonuniform sky coverage of the spacecraft. Two distinct distributions for objects at low (less than 20 deg) and high (more than 20 deg) galactic latitude are discussed. The distribution for low galactic latitude objects (which are mainly galactic) gives further information on their location within the Galaxy and their intrinsic luminosity. The distribution for high-latitude objects is consistent with an extragalactic origin of these sources. Evidence from the longitudinal distribution of these objects is used to further demonstrate their extragalactic nature.

Skylab experiments. Volume 1: Physical science, solar astronomy

The basic subject of this volume is the solar astronomy program conducted on Skylab. In addition to descriptions of the individual experiments and the principles involved in their performance, a brief description is included of the sun and the energy characteristics associated with each zone. Wherever possible, related classroom activities have been identified and discussed in some detail. It will be apparent that the relationships rest not only in the field of solar astronomy, but also in the following subjects: (1) physics - optics, electromagnetic spectrum, atomic structure, etc.; (2) chemistry - emission spectra, kinetic theory, X-ray absorption, etc.; (3) biology - radiation and dependence on the sun; (4) electronics - cathode ray tubes, detectors, photomultipliers, etc.; (5) photography; (6) astronomy; and (7) industrial arts.

Instrumentation for the measurement of high energy phenomena on NASA spacecraft.

High energy astrophysical observations will be conducted primarily from the Small Astronomy Satellites (SAS) and the High Energy Astronomy Observatories (HEAO). The first satellite (SAS A) will carry a set of collimated proportional counters to conduct a high sensitivity, high spatial resolution, all sky survey for X-ray sources. The objective of SAS B will be to search for celestial gamma-ray sources and regions and to measure the flux and energy spectrum of any sources located. A wire grid digitized spark chamber will be the prime detection instrument. The instrumentation of SAS C will consist of modulation collimators, slot collimators, and proportional counters.

High Energy Astronomy Observatory, Mission C, Phase A. Volume 2: Preliminary analyses and conceptual design

An analysis and conceptual design of a baseline mission and spacecraft are presented. Aspects of the HEAO-C discussed include: baseline experiments with X-ray observations of space, analysis of mission requirements, observatory design, structural analysis, thermal control, attitude sensing and control system, communication and data handling, and space shuttle launch and retrieval of HEAO-C.

Skylab and its solar astronomy experiments.

The functional characteristics of the Skylab are considered together with general information concerning the spacecraft and its equipment. The Skylab solar instruments are examined, giving attention to two H-alpha telescopes, a white light coronograph, X-ray spectrographic telescopes, a UV scanning polychromator/spectroheliometer, a dual X-ray telescope, an XUV spectrograph/spectroheliograph, and instruments of X-ray/UV solar photography. The Skylab solar observing programs are discussed along with aspects of astronaut training and details regarding the control and display devices of the spacecraft.

High energy astronomy or astrophysics and properties of the interplanetary plasma

The research activities related to high energy astrophysics and interplanetary plasma are reported. The experimental work in the following areas are described: (1) balloon-and rocket-borne cosmic X-ray, (2) X-ray spectroscopy, and (3) OSO-3 gamma ray experiment. Plasma studies in the interplanetary region, magnetosphere, and geomagnetic tail are included.

High Energy Astronomy Observatory, Mission C, Phase A. Volume 3: Appendices

Technical data, and experiment and spacecraft alternatives are presented in support of the HEAO-C, whose primary objective is a detailed study of the more interesting high energy sources, using grazing incidence X-ray telescopes and a spacecraft pointing accuracy of + or - 1 arc minute. The analyses presented cover the mission analysis and launch vehicle; thermal control trade studies and supporting analyses; attitude sensing and control analyses; electrical systems; and reliability analysis. The alternate experiments which were considered are listed, and the advantages and disadvantages of several alternate observatory configurations are assessed.

Skylab experiments. Volume 5: Astronomy and space physics

The astronomy and space physics investigations conducted in the Skylab program include over 20 experiments in four categories to explore space phenomena that cannot be observed from earth. The categories of space research are as follows: (1) phenomena within the solar system, such as the effect of solar energy on Earth's atmosphere, the composition of interplanetary space, the possibility of an inner planet, and the X-ray radiation from Jupiter, (2) analysis of energetic particles such as cosmic rays and neutrons in the near-earth space, (3) stellar and galactic astronomy, and (4) self-induced environment surrounding the Skylab spacecraft.

Celestial diffuse gamma radiation above 30 MeV observed by SAS-2

The Small Astronomy Satellite (SAS)-2, launched on November 15, 1972, carried into orbit a 32-deck magnetic-core digitized spark chamber gamma ray telescope to study celestial gamma radiation in the energy range above 30 MeV. In the study of several regions with b sub 2 15 deg, a finite, diffuse flux of gamma rays with a steep energy spectrum in the energy region from 35 to 200 MeV is observed. Representing the energy spectrum by a power law of the form dJ/dE = AE to - alpha power over this energy range, alpha is found along with the integral flux above 100 MeV. Combining this result with existing low energy gamma ray data yields an energy spectrum which is not a simple power law in energy, as in the X-ray region, but which demonstrates first an increase and then a decrease in slope, consistent within uncertainties with that predicted by cosmological theories, including the continuous production of high energy gamma rays primarily from neutral pi mesons throughout the history of the universe.

Diffuse X and gamma radiation.

The most reliable measurements in the energy range from 0.1 MeV to 100 MeV are presented in graphs. Studies in the region from 1 keV to 100 keV are discussed, giving attention to nonthermal mechanisms, thermal emission from a uniform intergalactic medium, the contribution of discrete extragalactic sources to the isotropic X-ray background, discrete diffuse X-ray sources in galaxy clusters, the contribution of galaxy clusters to the isotropic X-ray background, and fluctuations in the X-ray background. Diffuse X rays below 1 keV are also considered together with diffuse galactic X and gamma rays above 1 keV and the significance of diffuse X and gamma radiation for astronomy.

Quasars, pulsars, black holes and HEAO's

Astronomical surveys are discussed by large X-ray, gamma ray, and cosmic ray instruments carried onboard high-energy astronomy observatories. Quasars, pulsars, black holes, and the ultimate benefits of the new astronomy are briefly discussed.

Summary of spacecraft technology, systems reliability, and tracking data acquisition

Goddard activities are reported for 1973. An eight-year flight schedule for projected space missions is presented. Data acquired by spacecraft in the following disciplines are described: stellar ultraviolet, stellar X-rays, stellar gamma rays, solar radiation, radio astronomy, particles/fields, magnetosphere, aurora, and the upper atmosphere.
