Estella Atekwana: Autobiographical Notes

I describe my career journey from a young girl in Cameroon, West Africa, to a trailblazing geophysicist to my current role as dean. I chronicle my time as a student, the transition to being an early career faculty, launching my research career, and ultimately finding my way to administration. Along the way I helped pioneer biogeophysics as a subdiscipline in geophysics while simultaneously maintaining an international research program in continental rift tectonics. I also describe the many intersectionalities in my life including being the first Black woman in many spaces, being a champion for student success, developing a diverse talent pipeline by enhancing diversity in the geosciences, and navigating academic job searches as part of a dual-career couple. Finally, I acknowledge all those who helped shape my career including the many students I had the opportunity to mentor. • Many underrepresented minority geoscientists lack the social capital and professional networks critical for their success. • Geoscience departments must be intentional and deliberate in promoting and ensuring more inclusive workplace environments. • Dual-career couples remain a major challenge, impacting retention and recruitment of top talent; universities should provide resources to alleviate this challenge. • Biogeophysics has untapped potential for advancing understanding of subsurface biogeochemical processes and the search for life in extreme environments. • To date, considerable speculation remains regarding the fundamental geodynamic processes that initiate and sustain the evolution of magma-deficient rifts.

The Chicago Social Interaction Model (ChiSIM)

ChiSIM is a framework for implementing agent-based models that simulate the mixing of a synthetic population. In a ChiSIM based model, each agent, that is, each person in the simulated population, resides in a place (a household, dormitory or retirement home/long term care facility, for example), and moves among other places such as workplaces, homes, clinics, and community resources. Agents typically move between places according to their domain specific activity profile, such that each agent has a profile that determines at what times throughout the day they occupy a particular location. Once in a place, an agent mixes with other agents in some model or domain-specific way. For example, an agent may expose other agents to a disease in an epidemiological model.

A population data-driven workflow for COVID-19 modeling and learning

CityCOVID is a detailed agent-based model that represents the behaviors and social interactions of 2.7 million residents of Chicago as they move between and colocate in 1.2 million distinct places, including households, schools, workplaces, and hospitals, as determined by individual hourly activity schedules and dynamic behaviors such as isolating because of symptom onset. Disease progression dynamics incorporated within each agent track transitions between possible COVID-19 disease states, based on heterogeneous agent attributes, exposure through colocation, and effects of protective behaviors of individuals on viral transmissibility. Throughout the COVID-19 epidemic, CityCOVID model outputs have been provided to city, county, and state stakeholders in response to evolving decision-making priorities, while incorporating emerging information on SARS-CoV-2 epidemiology. Here we demonstrate our efforts in integrating our high-performance epidemiological simulation model with large-scale machine learning to develop a generalizable, flexible, and performant analytical platform for planning and crisis response.

Breathe Well, Live Well: Implementing an Adult Asthma Self-Management Education Program

Asthma remains a significant health problem in the United States. Adults with poorly controlled asthma can affect their community in a number of ways, from lost productivity in the workplace to health care costs to premature death. Asthma self-management education helps individuals achieve better control of their asthma and is critical for the overall health and well-being of individuals with asthma. While there are numerous programs and initiatives targeting children with asthma, there is a lack of comparable focus on the needs of adults with asthma. The American Lung Association developed Breathe Well, Live Well, an adult asthma self-management education program, and launched it nationwide in 2007. The program for adults has a flexible delivery format for community-based implementation. This article describes the development, dissemination, and transformation of the program. Each stage of implementation showed positive changes in asthma self-management practices that contribute to better asthma control, and one local implementation additionally showed decreased reports of missed work and unscheduled health care visits among participants. The findings from the three evaluations support the use of Breathe Well, Live Well for broad community-based implementation to improve asthma self-management efficacy and behaviors.

Human-System Interface Design Review Guidelines

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff reviews the human factors engineering (HFE) aspects of nuclear power plants in accordance with the Standard Review Plan (NUREG-0800, Standard Review Plan for the Review of Safety Analysis Reports for Nuclear Power Plants: LWR Edition). The Human Factors Engineering Program Review Model (NUREG-0711, Revision 3, issued November 2012) contains detailed design review procedures. As part of the review process, the interfaces between plant personnel and the plant's systems and components are evaluated for conformance with HFE guidelines. This document, Human-System Interface Design Review Guidelines (NUREG-0700, Revision 3), provides the guidelines necessary to perform this evaluation. The review guidelines address the physical and functional characteristics of human-system interfaces (HSIs). Because these guidelines only address the HFE aspects of design and not other related considerations, such as instrumentation and control and structural design, they are referred to as HFE guidelines. In addition to the review of actual HSIs, the NRC staff can use the NUREG-0700 guidelines to evaluate a design-specific HFE guidelines document or style guide. The HFE guidelines are organized into four basic parts, which are divided into sections. Part I contains guidelines for the basic HSI elements: information displays, user-interface interaction and management, and analog displays and controls. These elements are used as building blocks to develop HSI systems to serve specific functions. Part II contains the guidelines for reviewing the following HSI systems: alarm system, safety parameter display system, group-view display system, soft control system, computer-based procedure system, automation system, and communication system. Part III provides guidelines for the review of workstations and workplaces. Part IV provides guidelines for the review of HSI support (i.e., maintainability of digital systems and degraded HSI and instrumentation and control conditions).

The Challenges of Using Real-Time Detection Systems: From Data Gathering to Actionable Information [Slides]

This session will discuss challenges and real life examples associated with Real-Time Detection Systems (RTDS) used in exposure assessment strategies. This first presentation will provide an overview of RTDS as used as part of an overall exposure assessment strategy and to document regulatory compliance. Managing OH consequences has been problematic when it comes to actionable information gleaned from sensor data. The judgement of regulatory entities, can be at odds with IH practitioners implementing an exposure strategy that creates exposure profiles and judges workplace exposures.

Reference document for LANL stack sampling and ANSI N13.1 (Article) Gielow RL and McNamee MR 1993. Numerical Flue Gas Flow Modeling for Continuous Emissions Monitoring Applications. EPRI CEM Users Group Meeting. Baltimore. RP1961-13

American National Standard N13.1 “sets forth guidelines and performance criteria for sampling the emissions of airborne radioactive substances in the air discharge ducts and stacks of nuclear facilities. Emphasis is on extractive sampling from a location in a stack or duct where the contaminant is well mixed. At such a location, sampling may be conducted at a single point. This standard provides performance-based criteria for the use of air sampling probes, transport lines, sample collectors, sample monitoring instruments, and gas flow measuring methods. This standard also covers sampling program objectives, quality assurance issues, developing air sampling action levels, system optimization, and system performance verification. Workplace, containment, and environmental air monitoring are not addressed. Specific sample analysis methods and the reporting or interpreting of results are also not addressed.” (HPS 2011).

Internet Access Index: Measuring the availability and household adoption of high-speed internet

Access to broadband or high-speed internet has taken on increased importance during the COVID-19 pandemic as many workplaces and schools shifted to a virtual environment. The Internet Access Index (IAI) was developed to better understand the challenges many households face in connecting to high-speed internet, whether due to lack of broadband availability from internet service providers or difficulties in subscribing to a broadband service. The IAI is calculated as the product of 3 factors. The first two factors gauge the quality and availability of high-speed internet and the third factor represents the public’s ability to subscribe to high-speed internet services. The IAI scores United States’ census tracts on a [0,1] scale, where values near 0 represent areas with less internet access and values approaching 1 represent more internet access. The maximum score (1.0) implies that all census blocks within a census tract have high speed internet available at the highest national speed (currently 1000 mbps), and that all households within the tract have a fixed broadband subscription of some type.
