Use of ERTS-1 data for regional planning in the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments: A short brief

Land use and land use activity changes over discrete intervals of time represent basic data requirements in regional planning studies. Two examples of land use analysis required by the Council of Governments' transportation planning staff are described. Both were undertaken utilizing remote sensing imagery analysis. One study using large scale aircraft imagery developed a high degree of analytical detail and functional identification. The other, to support further detailed data base evaluation, utilizing ERTS-1 and small scale aircraft imagery, developed data identifying in more general detail major activity changes within the metropolitan region.

Joint Conference on Sensing of Environmental Pollutants, 2nd, Washington, D.C., December 10-12, 1973, Proceedings

Subjects considered are related to the remote passive sensing of atmosphere pollutants, the extension of laboratory measurement techniques for field use, instrument quality and measurement standardization, the remote active sensing of atmospheric pollutants, stationary source sensing, and air quality standards and measurement accuracy. Aspects of radiological, electromagnetic, and acoustic pollution monitoring are discussed together with new methods in particulate analysis, the measurement of meteorological variables that impact on atmospheric pollutants, and the impact of meteorological parameters on pollution analysis. The in-situ sensing of acoustic chemical and biological pollutants is reported along with global scale pollution monitoring and the remote sensing of water pollutants. Individual items are announced in this issue.

Nuclear Science Symposium, 21st, Scintillation and Semiconductor Counter Symposium, 14th, and Nuclear Power Systems Symposium, 6th, Washington, D.C., December 11-13, 1974, Proceedings

Papers are presented dealing with latest advances in the design of scintillation counters, semiconductor radiation detectors, gas and position sensitive radiation detectors, and the application of these detectors in biomedicine, satellite instrumentation, and environmental and reactor instrumentation. Some of the topics covered include entopistic scintillators, neutron spectrometry by diamond detector for nuclear radiation, the spherical drift chamber for X-ray imaging applications, CdTe detectors in radioimmunoassay analysis, CAMAC and NIM systems in the space program, a closed loop threshold calibrator for pulse height discriminators, an oriented graphite X-ray diffraction telescope, design of a continuous digital-output environmental radon monitor, and the optimization of nanosecond fission ion chambers for reactor physics. Individual items are announced in this issue.

Mated aerodynamic characteristics investigation for 0.04-scale model Boeing 747 CAM/external tank (model AX1284 E-5) combination in the University of Washington Aeronautical Laboratory F. K. Kirsten Wind Tunnel (CA11)

Experimental investigations of the aerodynamic characteristics of a 0.04-scale external tank (ET) force model in combination with a 0.04-scale Boeing 747 force model were conducted. Test purposes were: (1) to determine ET airloads for selected configurations and (2) to determine the effectiveness of ET position, incidence, and support structure and 747 vertical stabilizing surfaces on stability, control, and performance of 747/ET combinations. The 747 was tested alone to establish baseline data and to verify test results. Six-component aerodynamic force and moment data were recorded for the 747 CAM and ET combination. Six-component force and moment data were also recorded for the ET, which was mounted on an internal balance supported by the 747. Data were recorded for angles of attack from -4 deg to +24 deg in 2 deg increments and angles of sideslip of - deg to + or - 20 deg. Testing was conducted at Mach 0.15 with dynamic pressure deg at 36 psf and unit Reynolds number of 1.3 million per foot. Photographs of test configurations are shown.

Results of the Low Speed Aeroelastic Buffet Test with a 0.046-scale Model (747-ax1322-d-3/orbiter 8-0) of the 747 Cam/orbiter in the University of Washington Wind Tunnel (CS 3)

A series of wind tunnel studies designed to assess the potential buffet problems resulting from orbiter wake characteristics with its tailcone removed are presented to provide design loads and acceleration environments, and to develop data on buffet sensitivity to various aerodynamic configurations and flight parameters. Data are intended to support subsequent analyses of structural fatigue life, crew efficiency, and equipment vibrations.
