Progress on the experimental search for the chiral magnetic effect, the chiral vortical effect, and the chiral magnetic wave

In quantum chromodynamics, the interactions of quarks with the topological gluon field can lead to nonconservation of local parity (P) and conjugated parity (CP) , which provides a solution to the strong CP problem and a possibility to explain the asymmetry of matter-antimatter in the current universe. Under the action of a strong magnetic field, the nonconservation of P and CP can lead to the separation of particles according to their electric charges, which is called the chiral magnetic effect (CME). An observation of the CME-induced charge separation will confirm several fundamental properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), namely, approximate chiral symmetry restoration, topological charge fluctuation, and local parity violation. In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, there are other chiral anomalous effects similar to the CME, such as the chiral vortical effect (CVE) and the chiral magnetic wave (CMW). This review briefly summarizes the current progress of experimental research on the CME, CVE, and CMW in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Negative tip vortices blade

A design for wind turbine rotor blades, aircraft wings, and/or other aerodynamic applications which may reduce the vorticity downstream and thus improve lift is described. The blade designs may include an increase in the blade chord towards the tip of the blade, a change in the twist angle at least once along the length of the blade, and/or a change in the thickness of the blade at least once along the length of the blade. These changes individually or in combination may allow for the creation of a counter-rotating vortex behind the blade, increasing power generation and/or lift.

From vertices to vortices in magnetic nanoislands

We report recent studies in magnetic nanoarrays show that a variety of complex magnetic states and textures emerge as a function of a single magnetic nanoisland's aspect ratio. We propose a model that, in addition to fitting experiments, predicts magnetic states with continuous symmetry at particular aspect ratios and reveals a duality between vortex and vertex states. Our model opens new means of engineering novel types of artificial spin systems, and their application to complex magnetic textures in devices and computing.

Nonlinear inductive response of pinned superconducting vortices in artificial pinning sites

Using the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, we simulate the inductive responses of a variety of thin-film systems containing patterned antidots with different sizes and shapes. The results for all shapes show that the kinetic inductance diverges as the applied current approaches a critical current that is below the BCS depairing current. In conclusion, exploiting the similarity of the observed current-voltage behavior to that of Josephson junctions, we obtain an empirical equation that well fits the inductivity curve as a function of the applied current.

Collisionless relativistic magnetic reconnection driven by electron vortices in laser-plasma interaction

Magnetic reconnection (MR) is a fundamental process in space and laboratory plasmas. The appearance of high power lasers opens a new way to investigate MR under the relativistic condition. In this paper, relativistic collisionless MR driven by two ultra-intense lasers and a pair of asymmetric targets is studied numerically via the kinetic simulations. The static magnetic fields produced by the electron vortex structures with opposite magnetic polarities approach each other driven by the magnetic pressure and the density gradient. The antiparallel magnetic fields annihilate accompanied with the topological variation and the corresponding magnetic field energy is being dissipated to the kinetic energy of the nonthermal charged particles. Besides the outflows along the current sheet, a fast particle bunch is accelerated perpendicularly contributed by the displacement current.

Exact hopfion vortices in a 3D Heisenberg ferromagnet

Here, we find exact static soliton solutions for the unit spin vector field of an inhomogeneous, anisotropic three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet. Each soliton is labeled by two integers n and m. It is a (modified) skyrmion in the z = 0 plane with winding number n, which twists out of the plane m times in the z-direction to become a 3D soliton. Here m arises due to the periodic boundary condition at the z-boundaries. We use Whitehead’s integral expression to find that the Hopf invariant of the soliton is an integer H = nm. It represents a hopfion vortex. Plots of the preimages of this topological soliton show that they are either unknots or nontrivial knots, depending on n and m. Any pair of preimage curves links H times, corroborating the interpretation of H as a linking number. We also calculate the exact energy of the hopfion vortex, and show that its topological lower bound has a sublinear dependence on H. Using Derrick’s scaling analysis, we demonstrate that the presence of a spatial inhomogeneity in the anisotropic interaction, which in turn introduces a characteristic length scale in the system, leads to the stability of the hopfion vortex.

The emergence of three-dimensional chiral domain walls in polar vortices

Abstract Chirality or handedness of a material can be used as an order parameter to uncover the emergent electronic properties for quantum information science. Conventionally, chirality is found in naturally occurring biomolecules and magnetic materials. Chirality can be engineered in a topological polar vortex ferroelectric/dielectric system via atomic-scale symmetry-breaking operations. We use four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) to map out the topology-driven three-dimensional domain walls, where the handedness of two neighbor topological domains change or remain the same. The nature of the domain walls is governed by the interplay of the local perpendicular (lateral) and parallel (axial) polarization with respect to the tubular vortex structures. Unique symmetry-breaking operations and the finite nature of domain walls result in a triple point formation at the junction of chiral and achiral domain walls. The unconventional nature of the domain walls with triple point pairs may result in unique electrostatic and magnetic properties potentially useful for quantum sensing applications.

Imaging and structure analysis of ferroelectric domains, domain walls, and vortices by scanning electron diffraction

Direct electron detectors in scanning transmission electron microscopy give unprecedented possibilities for structure analysis at the nanoscale. In electronic and quantum materials, this new capability gives access to, for example, emergent chiral structures and symmetry-breaking distortions that underpin functional properties. Quantifying nanoscale structural features with statistical significance, however, is complicated by the subtleties of dynamic diffraction and coexisting contrast mechanisms, which often results in a low signal-to-noise ratio and the superposition of multiple signals that are challenging to deconvolute. Here we apply scanning electron diffraction to explore local polar distortions in the uniaxial ferroelectric Er(Mn,Ti)O 3 . Using a custom-designed convolutional autoencoder with bespoke regularization, we demonstrate that subtle variations in the scattering signatures of ferroelectric domains, domain walls, and vortex textures can readily be disentangled with statistical significance and separated from extrinsic contributions due to, e.g., variations in specimen thickness or bending. The work demonstrates a pathway to quantitatively measure symmetry-breaking distortions across large areas, mapping structural changes at interfaces and topological structures with nanoscale spatial resolution.

Observation of Kolmogorov turbulence due to multiscale vortices in dusty plasma experiments

We report the experimental observation of fully developed Kolmogorov turbulence originating from self-excited vortex flows in a three-dimensional (3D) dust cloud. The characteristic -5/3 scaling of 3D Kolmogorov turbulence is consistent in both the spatial and temporal energy spectra within a statistical variation of experimental data. Additionally, the 2/3 scaling in the second-order structure function further supports the presence of Kolmogorov turbulence. We also identified a slight deviation in the tails of the probability distribution functions for velocity gradients, a reflection of intermittency. The experiment showed the formation of a dust cloud in the diffused plasma region away from the electrodes. The dust rotation was observed in multiple experimental campaigns under different discharge conditions at different spatial locations and background plasma environments.
