Attitude control of a flexible spacecraft

An algorithm is presented for designing optimal low order compensators for high order systems and it is applied to the title problem where many vibration modes are excited by the control torque. These low order compensators are compared with the full order optimal compensator and found to be less sensitive to modeling errors and to provide near optimal attitude regulation.

Environmental effects on space shuttle reusable surface insulation coated with reaction cured glass

Sample titles of the space shuttle reusable surface insulation was subjected alternately to simulated mission heating and either real or simulated environmental exposure for up to 34 cycles. The coating cracked as a result of exposure to high temperature and moisture conditions, and insulation with cracked coatings absorbed significant quantities of water in the launch-pad environment. Cracking was a complex function of time, temperature, and moisture exposure. Cracked coatings remained adherent to the insulation for up to 24 cycles past initial cracking.

Study of Automated Module Fabrication for Lightweight Solar Blanket Utilization

Cost-effective automated techniques for accomplishing the titled purpose; based on existing in-house capability are described. As a measure of the considered automation, the production of a 50 kilowatt solar array blanket, exclusive of support and deployment structure, within an eight-month fabrication period was used. Solar cells considered for this blanket were 2 x 4 x .02 cm wrap-around cells, 2 x 2 x .005 cm and 3 x 3 x .005 cm standard bar contact thin cells, all welded contacts. Existing fabrication processes are described, the rationale for each process is discussed, and the capability for further automation is discussed.

Data reduction by computer processing

The automated analysis of remote sensing data, specifically digital processing of LANDSAT or other image data in numerical form was considered in a technical workshop which covered the teaching of digital image processing, including both theoretical and applied subjects and laboratory experience, and also reviewed NASA developed image processing software, and hardware/software systems employed at NASA-Ames Research Center in support of the Western Regional Applications Program (WRAP). A course titled Image Processing Lab, one of two courses required for a graduate minor in remote sensing at Arizona is examined as well as the rationale, content, and hardware/software support for this course.

Voyager-Jupiter radio science data papers

The reduction and interpretation of the radio science data from the Voyager 1 and 2 encounters of the planet Jupiter and its satellites resulted in the preparation of several papers for publication in the special Voyager-Jupiter issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research. The radio science and tracking systems of the Deep Space Network provide the data which makes this research possible. This article lists submitted papers by title, with their authors and with abstracts of their contents.

Effect of blackbody radiation on the threshold for two-electron photodetachment of H/-/

The threshold law of the titled process, which is of the same form as that for electron-impact ionization of H, can experimentally be contaminated by simultaneous single photodetachment and Rydberg excitation of the residual atom, followed by ionization of the Rydberg atom by (room-temperature) blackbody photons. This gives a signal indistinguishable from direct double photodetachment. The correction is here calculated and shown to be finite at the double photodetachment threshold, and to have, possibly, an implication about the form of the threshold law itself. However, at room temperature its contribution is found to be small as it pertains to a recently initiated experiment at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility for available energies greater than a millivolt above threshold. The temperature dependence of the correction is shown to be large (k/B/T) to the 7/2; thus at higher temperatures the effect may be observable.

Kinetics of the reaction OH + H2O2 yields HO2 + H2O

The paper describes an experimental study of the title reaction that uses the discharge-flow technique, laser-induced-fluorescence detection of OH and simultaneous monitoring of O and H atoms in the 250-459 K range. The reaction is normal and free from surface effect interference in Teflon or halocarbon wax-coated tube, but not in clean Pyrex. OH radicals are generated in three ways and at low concentrations to eliminate side reactions. The rate constants were determined at 298 K and over the 250-459 K range, with a factor of two higher at 298 K and factors of 3 to 5 higher at 10 to 30 km altitude in the terrestrial atmosphere than previous studies have indicated. The effect of the higher rate constant on atmospheric processes and on recent laboratory measurements of other reactions is also discussed.

Bibliography on aerodynamics of airframe/engine integration of high-speed turbine-powered aircraft, volume 1

This bibliography was developed as a first step in the preparation of a monograph on the subject of the aerodynamics of airframe/engine integration of high speed turbine powered aircraft. It lists 1535 unclassified documents published mainly in the period from 1955 to 1980. Primary emphasis was devoted to aerodynamic problems and interferences encountered in the integration process; however, extensive coverage also was given to the characteristics and problems of the isolated propulsion system elements. A detailed topic breakdown structure is used. The primary contents of the individual documents are indicated by the combination of the document's title and its location within the framework of the bibliography.

A survey of states concerning the use of LANDSAT in support of the comprehensive planning assistance program (Title IV, section 701) of the Housing and Community Development Act (1974) which is aimed mostly at small communities and rural counties, shows: (1) state governments used or were aware of the application of LANDSAT for inventorying land use and land cover at the state and local level; (2) use of satellite data was associated with the development of automated geographic information systems and the computer capability of handling and analyzing mapped information and other data tied to geographic coordinates and boundaries; and (3) LANDSAT capabilities in states tend to be institutionalized within state government information services where they can be readily assessed by state agencies. A summary of the state program for New Jersey and South Dakota is presented along with the state development guide plans, the rationale for using the satellite, and potential applications.
