In flight estimations of Cassini spacecraft inertia tensor and thruster magnitude

This paper describes two methods used by the Cassini Attitude Control team to determine these key parameters and how flight telemetry was used to estimate them. The method for estimating the spacecraft inertia tensor exploits the conservation of angular momentum during spacecraft slews under reaction wheel control.

Exploring Quantum State Preparation Using Tensor Networks and Sparse Wavefunction Simulations

The variational quantum eigenvalue solver is a powerful hybrid quantum-classical approach that has been suggested as a candidate method to run on near-term quantum hardware for computing ground state electronic energies of molecular systems. However, even for small molecules, the number of variational parameters and qubits required to minimize the electronic energy is beyond the reach of current quantum computers except for small basis sets. We explore a new paradigm for state preparation where we test how much of the optimization can be approximately prepared with classical computers to reduce the number of optimization steps performed using a quantum device. By adapting a recent algorithm for the factorized form of the UCC ansatz, we can study molecular electronic structure problems with up to 64 qubits. In addition, we also test a related approach of using tensor networks to optimize quantum circuits in order to benchmark various lattice models. We present results using these approaches and discuss strategies for incorporating these ideas into variational algorithms involving near-term quantum computers. Our results help demonstrate the strength of the UCC ansatz and address pressing questions about optimal initial parameterizations and circuit construction.

Vector and tensor radiation from Schwarzschild relativistic circular geodesics.

A technique developed by Regge and Wheeler (1957) is applied in the Schwarzschild background geometry to treat the radiation emitted by a test particle moving at a speed close to the local speed of light in the vicinity of a black hole. An analytic expression is obtained for the gravitational and electromagnetic radiation spectrum of a particle traveling in a highly relativistic orbit around a Schwarzschild blac hole.

Do massive Brans-Dicke theories of gravitation imitate Brans-Dicke theories with nonzero divergence of energy-momentum tensor

Acharya and Hogan (1973) have introduced a massive scalar field into the usual Brans-Dicke (1961) theory of gravitation. Formally they obtain certain field equations. The assumption of a nonzero divergence for T mu nu (or equivalently the introduction of sources) formally imitates a massive Brans-Dicke and satisfies the condition of Acharya and Hogan that the theory be indistinguishable with the classical test of the Einstein theory. Although it was shown elsewhere that the modified Brans-Dicke theory agrees with the classical test under certain conditions, there were no specified limits on omega, a similar circumstance discovered by Acharya and Hogan for the massive scalar field.

Generalized Grueneisen tensor from solid nonlinearity parameters

Anharmonic effects in solids are often described in terms of generalized Grueneisen parameters which measure the strain dependence of the lattice vibrational frequencies. The relationship between these parameters and the solid nonlinearity parameters measured directly in ultrasonic harmonic generation experiments is derived using an approach valid for normal-mode elastic wave propagation in any crystalline direction. The resulting generalized Grueneisen parameters are purely isentropic in contrast to the Brugger-Grueneisen parameters which are of a mixed thermodynamic state. Experimental data comparing the isentropic generalized Grueneisen parameters and the Brugger-Grueneisen parameters are presented.
