Parametric Robust Control and System Identification: Unified Approach

During the period of this support, a new control system design and analysis method has been studied. This approach deals with control systems containing uncertainties that are represented in terms of its transfer function parameters. Such a representation of the control system is common and many physical parameter variations fall into this type of uncertainty. Techniques developed here are capable of providing nonconservative analysis of such control systems with parameter variations. We have also developed techniques to deal with control systems when their state space representations are given rather than transfer functions. In this case, the plant parameters will appear as entries of state space matrices. Finally, a system modeling technique to construct such systems from the raw input - output frequency domain data has been developed.

Investigations of high power problems in space shuttle antenna designs

A study program is discussed which includes a survey of industry and government laboratories and was undertaken to determine the state of the art in dealing with problems of high power levels in reentry antenna design. A laboratory program to develop techniques for testing dielectric materials for effects on RF transmission is also considered, with emphasis on high power applications in space and reentry flights. The study program resulted in a set of guidelines for avoiding breakdown in antenna design. A discussion of temperature effects on dielectric breakdown is also given. From the laboratory program, a description is presented of techniques for (1) heating with a carbon arc image furnace, (2) temperature measurement (using thermocouples and an infrared pyrometer), (3) mass spectrometric monitoring of outgassing, (4) testing for RF breakdown in both heated dielectrics and the dielectric/air and dielectric/plasma interfaces. Data and observations are reported from technique development using candidate shuttle materials falling into three categories: (1) lightweight refractory foams, (2) dense RF window materials, and (3) ablative materials.

Practical approaches for application of resistance type strain gages on high temperature composites

Four major areas of interest with respect to utilizing strain gages on carbon/carbon (with SiC surfaces) and titanium matrix composites are addressed. Strain gage and adhesive combinations on carbon/carbon (C/C) at temperatures from minus 190 C to to 540 C, half-bridge gaging for reducing apparent strain on C/C using Poisson's ratio and bending configurations, a review of the 'field installation' techniques developed for gaging a C/C hypersonic generic elevon, and results of initial strain gaging efforts on titanium matrix composites are discussed. Current research in developing techniques for increasing the maximum temperature for strain gages on carbon/carbon are reviewed.

Development of techniques for gantryless associated-particle imaging

To move fast-neutron radiography using the associated-particle imaging technique from the laboratory to the field, the development of new analysis techniques is required. In particular, the relative positions of the source and detectors need to be determined when they have been placed by hand, the normalization for a particular source–detector geometry needs to be determined without a measurement in the same geometry with no object present, and accurate image stitching is required when multiple detector positions are necessary to image an object. The present work describes methods that employ transmission neutron data to localize a fast-neutron imaging panel with respect to the neutron source, calculate a normalization for a given source–detector geometry, stitch images together, and describes the required system calibrations. The reported techniques enable in-field neutron radiography for cases in which the source–detector geometry is not well known a priori and where operational constraints preclude a normalization measurement.

Flexible, FEP-Teflon covered solar cell module development

Techniques and equipment were developed for the large scale, low-cost fabrication of lightweight, roll-up and fold-up, FEP-Teflon encapsulated solar cell modules. Modules were fabricated by interconnecting solderless single-crystal silicon solar cells and heat laminating them at approximately 300 C between layers of optically clear FEP and to a loadbearing Kapton substrate sheet. Modules were fabricated from both conventional and wraparound contact solar cells. A heat seal technique was developed for mechanically interconnecting modules into an array. The electrical interconnections for both roll-up and fold-up arrays were also developed. The use of parallel-gap resistance welding, ultrasonic bonding, and thermocompression bonding processes for attaching interconnects to solar cells were investigated. Parallel-gap welding was found to be best suited for interconnecting the solderless solar cells into modules. Details of the fabrication equipment, fabrication processes, module and interconnect designs, environmental test equipment, and test results are presented.

Development of techniques for producing static strata maps and development of photointerpretive methods based on multitemporal LANDSAT data

Progress in the evaluation of the static stratification procedure and the development of alternative photointerpretive techniques to the present LACIE procedure for the identification of training fields is reported. Statistically significant signature controlling variables were defined for use in refining the stratification procedure. A subset of the 1973-74 Kansas LACIE segments for wheat was analyzed.

Development of techniques for producing static strata maps and development of photointerpretive methods based on multitemporal LANDSAT data

The results and progress of work conducted in support of the Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE) are documented. Research was conducted for two tasks. These tasks include: (1) evaluation of the UCB static stratification procedure and modification of that procedure if warranted; and (2) the development of alternative photointerpretive techniques to the present LACIE procedure for the identification and selection of training areas for machine-processing of LACIE segments.

Development and analysis of the learjet 54/55 fuselage NASTRAN model using substructure techniques

Development and analysis of the Learjet 54/55 fuselage NASTRAN model is presented. This structure was broken down into several substructures to make the modeling and analysis effort more manageable. Since the geometry was fairly complex in some areas and in order to provide flexibility for future configuration studies, a series of local coordinate systems were used to describe the model. This work was accomplished using several different computer systems, the more recent of which were connected by a high speed data communications lines to perform the tasks of model generation and NASTRAN analysis.
