Data for Rewiring Yeast Metabolism for Producing 2,3-Butanediol and Two Downstream Applications: Techno-Economic Analysis and Life Cycle Assessment of Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) and Agricultural Biostimulant Production

Rising concerns for sustainability and global climate change have driven the development of sustainable production pathways for biofuels and chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass via integrated biological and chemical processes. We constructed an engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae capable of producing 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) from glucose without accumulating ethanol and glycerol, which hinder downstream processing of 2,3-BDO, through extensive metabolic reprogramming. Specifically, we introduced heterologous 2,3-BDO biosynthetic enzymes and deleted the major isozymes of ethanol and glycerol biosynthetic enzymes. In addition, we introduced an NAD+ regenerating Pyruvate-Malate (PM) cycle and enhanced the NAD+ regenerating capability of the PM cycle to resolve the redox imbalance from the deletion of ethanol and glycerol production pathways. The resulting engineered yeast produced 109.9 g/L of 2,3-BDO with a productivity of 1.0 g/L/h and a yield of 0.36 g/g glucose in a fed-batch fermentation. We also conducted techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) of the production of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) through catalytic dehydration of 2,3-BDO. A TEA based on the experimental results indicated that the minimum product selling price (MPSP) was estimated to be $1.90/kg. Regarding cradle-to-grave LCA, 100-year global warming potential (GWP100) and fossil energy consumption (FEC) were found to be 0.37 kg CO2 eq/kg and 3.1 MJ/kg, respectively. These results demonstrated the feasibility of cost-competitive and sustainable bio-based MEK production via yeast fermentation. In addition, we explored the possibility of using the fermentation broth containing 2,3-BDO as a biostimulant inducing drought tolerance in plants. As a result, the yeast 2,3-BDO fermentation broth can induce drought tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana without a complicated purification process.

Efficient and stable perovskite solar cells based on blade-coated CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 thin films fabricated using “green” solvents under ambient conditions

Metal halide perovskites are considered the most promising candidates for solar cells of the decade due to their exceptional optical and electronic properties. The power conversion efficiency of metal halide perovskites, when incorporated as the active layer of solar cells, has become comparable to that observed for conventional silicon solar cells. However, the stability, scaleup, green solvent usage, and fabrication in ambient conditions of metal halide perovskites need to be solved for commercial applications. Here, in this work, we report the fabrication of blade-coated methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite thin films using methylamine and acetonitrile as “green” solvents under ambient conditions. Our perovskite films are initially prepared from low purity PbI2 (99%) and are blade-coated in dry air at relative humidity (RH) levels above 30%. A significant advantage of fabricating our perovskite thin films via blade-coating protocols is that there is a minimal amount of precursors (5 μL) used compared to spin-coating methods (50μL–60μL) for a 4 cm 2 substrate. With the addition of a small amount of an organic halide salt, namely, phenethylammonium chloride, the film crystallinity is improved and non-radiative recombination is suppressed, resulting in power conversion efficiencies over 20%. In addition, the device maintains more than 95% of its initial efficiency after 500 h under continuous light illumination of 1-sun at open circuit conditions, 50 °C and 60% RH. The above method leads a path towards the commercial fabrication of perovskite solar cells.

Synthesis of Antiperovskite Solid Electrolytes: Comparing Li 3 SI, Na 3 SI, and Ag 3 SI

Prior calculations have predicted that chalcohalide anti-perovskites may exhibit enhanced ionic mobility compared to oxyhalide anti-perovskites as solid-state electrolytes. Herein, the synthesis of Ag-, Li- and Na-based chalcohalide anti-perovskites is investigated using first-principle calculations and in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. These techniques demonstrate that the formation of Ag 3 SI is facilitated by the adoption of a common body centered cubic packing of S 2– and I – in the reactants and products at elevated temperatures, with additional stabilization achieved by the formation of a solid solution of the anions. Further, the absence of these two features appears to hinder the formation of the analogous Li and Na anti-perovskites.

Characterizing Density and Spatial Distribution of Trap States in Ta 3 N 5 Thin Films for Rational Defect Passivation

Tantalum nitride (Ta 3 N 5 ) has gained significant attention as a potential photoanode material, yet it has been challenged by material quality issues. Defect-induced trap states are detrimental to the performance of any semiconductor material. Beyond influencing the performance of Ta 3 N 5 films, defects can also accelerate the degradation in water during desired electrochemical applications. Defect passivation has provided an enormous boost to the development of many semiconductor materials but is currently in its infancy for Ta 3 N 5 . This is in part due to a lack of experimental understanding regarding the spatial and energetic distribution of trap states throughout Ta 3 N 5 thin films. Here, we employ drive-level capacitance profiling (DLCP) to experimentally resolve the spatial and energetic distribution of trap states throughout Ta 3 N 5 thin films. The density of deeper energetic traps is found to reach ∼2.5 to 6 × 10 22 cm –3 at the interfaces of neat Ta 3 N 5 thin films, over an order of magnitude greater than the bulk. In addition to the spatial profile of deep trap states, we report neat Ta 3 N 5 thin films to be highly n-type in nature, owning a free carrier density of ∼9.74 × 10 17 cm –3 . This information, coupled with the present understanding of native oxide layers on Ta 3 N 5 , has facilitated the rational design of a targeted passivation strategy that simultaneously provides a means for catalyst immobilization. Loading catalyst via silatrane moieties suppresses the density of defects at the surface of Ta 3 N 5 thin films by two orders of magnitude, while also reducing the free carrier density of films by over one order of magnitude, effectively dedoping the films to ∼2.40 × 10 16 cm –3 . The surface passivation of Ta 3 N 5 films translates to suppressed defect-induced trapping and recombination of photoexcited carriers, as determined through absorption, photoluminescence, and transient photovoltage. Here, this illustrates how developing a deeper understanding of the distribution and influence of defects in Ta 3 N 5 thin films has the potential to guide future works and ultimately accelerate the integration and development of high-performance Ta 3 N 5 thin film devices.

Synthesis, Elasticity, and Spin State of an Intermediate MgSiO 3 -FeAlO 3 Bridgmanite: Implications for Iron in Earth's Lower Mantle

Fe-Al-bearing bridgmanite may be the dominant host for ferric iron in Earth's lower mantle. Here we report the synthesis of (Mg 0.5 Fe 3+ 0.5 )(Al 0.5 Si 0.5 )O 3 bridgmanite (FA50) with the highest Fe 3+ -Al 3+ coupled substitution known to date. X-ray diffraction measurements showed that at ambient conditions, the FA50 adopted the LiNbO 3 structure. Upon compression at room temperature to 18 GPa, it transformed back into the bridgmanite structure, which remained stable up to 102 GPa and 2,600 K. Fitting Birch-Murnaghan equation of state of FA50 bridgmanite yields V 0 = 172.1(4) Å 3 , K 0 = 229(4) GPa with K 0 ' = 4(fixed). Furthermore, the calculated bulk sound velocity of the FA50 bridgmanite is ~7.7% lower than MgSiO 3 bridgmanite, mainly because the presence of ferric iron increases the unit-cell mass by 15.5%. This difference likely represents the upper limit of sound velocity anomaly introduced by Fe 3+ -Al 3+ substitution. X-ray emission and synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements showed that after laser annealing, ~6% of Fe 3+ cations exchanged with Al 3+ and underwent the high- to low-spin transition at 59 GPa. The low-spin proportion of Fe 3+ increased gradually with pressure and reached 17–31% at 80 GPa. Since the cation exchange and spin transition in this Fe 3+ -Al 3+ -enriched bridgmanite do not cause resolvable unit-cell volume reduction, and the increase of low-spin Fe 3+ fraction with pressure occurs gradually, the spin transition would not produce a distinct seismic signature in the lower mantle. However, it may influence iron partitioning and isotopic fractionation, thus introducing chemical heterogeneity in the lower mantle.

Pt 3 Sn nanoparticles enriched with SnO 2 /Pt 3 Sn interfaces for highly efficient alcohol electrooxidation

Pt 3 Sn nanoparticles (NPs) enriched with Pt 3 Sn/ultra-small SnO 2 interfaces (Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 /NG) were synthesized through a thermal treatment of Pt 2 Sn/NG in a H 2 atmosphere, followed by annealing under H 2 and air conditions. The unique structure of Pt 3 Sn NPs enriched with Pt 3 Sn/SnO 2 interfaces was observed on the Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 /NG catalyst based on HRTEM. The optimized Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 /NG catalyst achieves high catalytic activity with an ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) activity of 366 mA mg Pt -1 and a methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) activity of 503 mA mg Pt -1 at the potential of 0.7 V, which are eight-fold and five-fold higher than those for the commercial Pt/C catalyst (44 and 99 mA mg Pt -1 , respectively). The Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 /NG catalyst is found to be 3 times more stable and have higher CO tolerance than Pt/C. The outstanding performance of the Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 /NG catalyst should be ascribed to the synergetic effect induced by the unique structure of Pt 3 Sn NPs enriched with Pt 3 Sn/SnO 2 interfaces. The synergetic effect between Pt 3 Sn NPs and ultra-small SnO 2 increases the performance for alcohol oxidation because the Sn in both Pt 3 Sn and SnO 2 favors the removal of CO ads on the nearby Pt by providing OH ads species at low potentials. The present work suggests that the Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 is indeed a unique kind of efficient electrocatalyst for alcohol electrooxidation.

Formation kinetics and thermodynamic stability of the Aurivillius compounds in Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 –BiFeO 3 system

Abstract The Aurivillius compounds in the Bi 2 O 3 –Fe 2 O 3 –TiO 2 system, combining ferroelectric, semiconducting, and ferromagnetic properties, have attracted particular interest. Formation kinetics and thermodynamic stability are the fundamental knowledge needed for modeling and predicting the temporal microstructure and property evolution during materials processing but have not yet been addressed by quantitative experimental measurement. This article focuses on the Bi n +1 Fe n –3 Ti 3 O 3 n +3 Aurivillius compounds on the Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 –BiFeO 3 tie‐line to elucidate the mechanisms and thermodynamic controls responsible for phase formation of compounds with various perovskite‐like layers. Five high‐purity Aurivillius compounds Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 , Bi 5 FeTi 3 O 15 , Bi 6 Fe 2 Ti 3 O 18 , Bi 7 Fe 3 Ti 3 O 21 , and Bi 8 Fe 4 Ti 3 O 24 with integer n = 3–7 values were synthesized and their phase transformation properties and enthalpies of formation were studied by X‐ray diffraction in situ, high temperature differential scanning calorimetry, and high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. Thermodynamic stability of the compounds decreases with increasing n , and formation kinetics gradually slow down, demonstrating the inherent difficulty to synthesize pure Aurivillius compounds with n larger than 8. This difficulty was confirmed by an impurity phase coexisting with Bi 9 Fe 5 Ti 3 O 27 .

High-level co-production of 3-hydroxypropionic acid and 1,3-propanediol from glycerol: Metabolic engineering and process optimization

3-Hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP) and 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) are value-added chemicals with versatile applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries. Nevertheless, sustainable production of 3-HP and 1,3-PDO is often limited by the lack of efficient strains and suitable fermentation configurations. We report attempts have been made to improve the co-production of both metabolites through metabolic engineering of Escherichia coli and process optimization. First, the 3-HP and 1,3-PDO co-biosynthetic pathways were recruited and optimized in E. coli, followed by coupling the pathways to the transhydrogenase-mediated cofactor regeneration systems that increased cofactor availability and product synthesis. Next, pathway rebalancing and block of by-product formation significantly improved 3-HP and 1,3-PDO net titer. Subsequently, glycerol flux toward 3-HP and 1,3-PDO synthesis was maximized by removing metabolic repression and fine-tuning the glycerol oxidation pathway. Lastly, the combined fermentation process optimization and two-stage pH-controlled fed-batch fermentation co-produced 140.50 g/L 3-HP and 1,3-PDO, with 0.85 mol/mol net yield.

Elucidation of puzzling questions regarding the CrO x /Al 2 O 3 catalyst I. X-ray absorption spectroscopy aided identification of the nature of the chromium oxide species in the CrO x /Al 2 O 3 dehydrogenation catalyst system

The CATOFIN© process produces propylene from propane using a CrO x /Al 2 O 3 catalyst. Despite its use, there are still uncertainties surrounding the nature of Cr species formed during synthesis, regeneration, and aging. It has been observed that ppm levels of Cr 2 O 3 can be oxidized to Cr(VI) in air; however, when Cr 2 O 3 is in direct contact with Al 2 O 3 , Cr(VI) formation increased more than 100-fold. Here, to confirm physical contact between Cr 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 results in increased Cr(VI) formation, Cr 2 O 3 and Cr 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 samples were synthesized, calcined, and characterized. Catalytic activity measurements confirm propylene selectivity inversely tracks with Cr(VI). Wet chemical titration and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) quantified and determined the structure of the Cr(VI) species. FEFF X-ray absorption near edge structure simulations determined the potential sensitivity of the XAS to the presence of Al 3+ /Cr 3+ neighboring atoms. XAS correlated to FEFF simulations suggested that Al 3+ x Cr 3+ 2–x Cr 6+ 3 O 12 comprises a significant fraction of the Cr(VI) species formed.

Thermodynamic modeling of calcium carbonate scale precipitation: aqueous Na + -Ca 2+ -Cl – -HCO 3 – -CO 3 2– -CO 2 system

To allow for accurate calculations of calcium carbonate scaling in highly saline produced waters, we present a comprehensive thermodynamic model based on the electrolyte nonrandom two-liquid (eNRTL) activity coefficient equation for the aqueous Na ⁺ -Ca ²⁺ -Cl – -HCO 3 – -CO 3 ²– -CO 2 system. The eNRTL binary interaction parameters for the H 2 O:(Na ⁺ -CO 3 2– ) pair, the H 2 O:(Na ⁺ -HCO 3 – ) pair, the (Na⁺-Cl–):(Na ⁺ -CO 3 2– ) pair, and the (Na ⁺ -Cl – ):(Na ⁺ -HCO 3 – ) pair are identified in this work via the regression of thermodynamic, calorimetric, and phase equilibria experimental data. The binary interaction parameters associated with the H 2 O:(Na ⁺ -Cl – ) pair, the CO 2 :(Na ⁺ -Cl – ) pair, the H 2 O:(Ca ²⁺ -Cl – ) pair, and the (Na ⁺ -Cl – ):(Ca ²⁺ -Cl – ) pair are retrieved from the literature. The remaining binary interaction parameters are retrieved from Aspen Plus or set to zero. In addition, the solubility product constants are identified for Na 2 CO 3 ·10H 2 O (s) , Na 2 CO 3 · 7H 2 O (s) , Na 2 CO 3 ·H 2 O (s) , Na 2 CO 3 ·NaHCO 3 2H 2 O (s) , Na 2 CO 3 ·3NaHCO 3 (s) , and CaCO 3(s) via regression of solubility data. Here, the model is capable of accurately calculating all phase equilibria and calorimetric properties at temperatures up to 473.15 K and salt concentrations up to saturation.

Centrosymmetric or Noncentrosymmetric? Transition Metals Talking in K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe)

Two new quaternary sulfides K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) have been synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state routine and flux growth method. The crystal growth process of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) was elucidated by in-situ powder X-ray diffraction and DSC thermal analysis. The mm-sized crystals of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) were grown. K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 crystallizes in a new structure type in centrosymmetric space group P1¯ (No. 2) with unit cell parameters of a = 7.016(1) Å, b = 7.770(1)Å, c = 14.342(1) Å, α = 93.80(1)°, β = 92.65(1)°, γ = 114.04(1)°. K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 crystallizes in K 2 FeGe 3 Se 8 structure type and the noncentrosymmetric space group P2 1 (No. 4) with unit cell parameters of a = 7.1089(5)Å, b = 11.8823(8)Å, c = 16.7588(11)Å, β = 96.604(2)°. There is a high structural similarity between K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 and K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 . The larger volume coupled with higher degrees of distortion of [FeS 4 ] tetrahedra compared to [CoS 4 ] tetrahedra accounts for the structure’s shift from centrosymmetric to noncentrosymmetric. The theory simulation confirms that [TS 4 ]T= Co or Fe tetrahedra play a crucial role in controlling the structure and properties of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe). The measured optical bandgaps of K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 and K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 are 2.1(1) eV and 2.6(1) eV respectively. K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 shows antiferromagnetic ordering at 24K while no magnetic ordering was detected in K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 . In conclusion, the magnetic measurements also demonstrate the divalent nature of transition metals in K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe).

Chelating Rare-Earth Metals (Ln 3+ ) and 225 Ac 3+ with the Dual-Size-Selective Macrocyclic Ligand Py 2 -Macrodipa

Radioisotopes of metallic elements, or radiometals, are widely employed in both therapeutic and diagnostic nuclear medicine. For this application, chelators that efficiently bind the radiometal of interest and form a stable metal–ligand complex with it are required. Toward the development of new chelators for nuclear medicine, we recently reported a novel class of 18-membered macrocyclic chelators that is characterized by their ability to form stable complexes with both large and small rare-earth metals (Ln 3+ ), a property referred to as dual size selectivity. A specific chelator in this class called py-macrodipa, which contains one pyridyl group within its macrocyclic core, was established as a promising candidate for 135 La 3+ , 213 Bi 3+ , and 44 Sc 3+ chelation. Building upon this prior work, here we report the synthesis and characterization of a new chelator called py 2 -macrodipa with two pyridyl units fused into the macrocyclic backbone. Its coordination chemistry with the Ln 3+ series was investigated by NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, analytical titrations, and transchelation assays. These studies reveal that py 2 -macrodipa retains the expected dual size selectivity and possesses an enhanced thermodynamic affinity for all Ln 3+ compared to py-macrodipa. By contrast, the kinetic stability of Ln 3+ complexes with py 2 -macrodipa is only improved for the light, large Ln 3+ ions. Based upon these observations, we further assessed the suitability of py 2 -macrodipa for use with 225 Ac 3+ , a large radiometal with valuable properties for targeted α therapy. Radiolabeling and stability studies revealed py 2 -macrodipa to efficiently incorporate 225 Ac 3+ and to form a complex that is inert in human serum over 3 weeks. Although py 2 -macrodipa does not surpass the state-of-the-art chelator macropa for 225 Ac 3+ chelation, it does provide another effective 225 Ac 3+ chelator. Furthermore, these studies shed light on the fundamental coordination chemistry of the Ln 3+ series and may inspire future chelator design efforts.

Photodissociation Dynamics of Astrophysically Relevant Propyl Derivatives (C 3 H 7 X; X = CN, OH, HCO) at 157 nm Exploiting an Ultracompact Velocity Map Imaging Spectrometer: The (Iso)Propyl Channel

The photodissociation dynamics of astrophysically relevant propyl derivatives (C 3 H 7 X; X = CN, OH, HCO) at 157 nm exploiting an ultracompact velocity map imaging (UVMIS) setup has been reported. The successful operation of UVMIS allowed the exploration of the 157 nm photo dissociation of six (iso)propyl systems - n/i-propyl cyanide (C 3 H 7 CN), n/i-propyl alcohol (C 3 H 7 OH), and (iso)butanal (C 3 H 7 CHO) – to explore the C 3 H 7 loss channel. The distinct center-of-mass translational energy distributions for the i-C 3 H 7 X (X= CN, OH, HCO) could be explained through preferential excitation of the low frequency C-H bending modes of the formyl moiety compared to the higher frequency stretchings of the cyano and hydroxy moieties. Although the ionization energy of the n-C 3 H 7 radical exceeds the energy of a 157 nm photon, C 3 H 7 + was observed in the n-C 3 H 7 X (X= CN, OH, HCO) systems as a result of photoionization of vibrationally "hot" n-C 3 H 7 fragments, photoionization of i-C 3 H 7 after a hydrogen shift in vibrationally "hot" n-C 3 H 7 radicals, and/or two-photon ionization. Our experiments reveal that at least the isopropyl radical (i-C 3 H 7 ) and possibly the normal propyl radical (n-C 3 H 7 ) should be present in the interstellar medium and hence searched for by radio telescopes.

Exchange-biased quantum tunnelling of magnetization in a [Mn 3 ] 2 dimer of single-molecule magnets with rare ferromagnetic inter-Mn 3 coupling

A covalently-linked dimer of two single-molecule magnets (SMMs), [Mn 6 O(O 2 CMe) 6 (1,3-ppmd) 3 ](ClO 4 ) 2 , has been synthesized from the reaction of [Mn 3 O(O 2 CMe) 6 (py) 3 ](ClO 4 ) with 1,3-phenylene-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethanone) dioxime (1,3-ppmdH 2 ). It contains two [Mn III 3 O] +7 triangular units linked by three 1,3-ppmd 2 - groups into an [Mn 3 ] 2 dimer with D 3 symmetry. Solid-state dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that each Mn 3 subunit retains its properties as an SMM with an S = 6 ground state. Magnetization vs. dc field sweeps on a single crystal reveal hysteresis loops below 1.3 K exhibiting exchange-biased quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM) steps with a bias field of +0.06 T. This is the first example of a dimer of SMMs showing a positive exchange bias of the QTM steps in the hysteresis loops, and it has therefore been subjected to a detailed analysis. Simulation of the loops determines that each Mn3 unit is exchange-coupled with its neighbour primarily through the 1,3-ppmd 2 - linkers, confirming a weak ferromagnetic inter-Mn 3 interaction of J 12 ≈ +6.5 mK ($\hat{H}= -2J\hat{S}_i·\hat{S}_j$ convention). High-frequency EPR studies of a microcrystalline powder sample enable accurate determination of the zero-field splitting parameters of the uncoupled Mn3 SMMs, while also confirming the weak exchange interaction between the two SMMs within each [Mn 3 ] 2 dimer. The combined results emphasize the ability of designed covalent linkers to generate inter-SMM coupling of a particular sign and relative magnitude, and thus the ability of such linkers to modulate the quantum physics. As such, this article supports the feasibility of using designed covalent linkers to develop molecular oligomers of SMMs, or other magnetic molecules, as multi-qubit systems and/or other components of new quantum technologies.

Similar photosynthetic but different yield responses of C 3 and C 4 crops to elevated O 3

The deleterious effects of ozone (O 3 ) pollution on crop physiology, yield, and productivity are widely acknowledged. It has also been assumed that C 4 crops with a carbon concentrating mechanism and greater water use efficiency are less sensitive to O 3 pollution than C 3 crops. This assumption has not been widely tested. Therefore, we compiled 46 journal articles and unpublished datasets that reported leaf photosynthetic and biochemical traits, plant biomass, and yield in five C 3 crops (chickpea, rice, snap bean, soybean, and wheat) and four C 4 crops (sorghum, maize, Miscanthus × giganteus , and switchgrass) grown under ambient and elevated O 3 concentration ([O 3 ]) in the field at free-air O 3 concentration enrichment (O 3 -FACE) facilities over the past 20 y. When normalized by O 3 exposure, C 3 and C 4 crops showed a similar response of leaf photosynthesis, but the reduction in chlorophyll content, fluorescence, and yield was greater in C 3 crops compared with C 4 crops. Additionally, inbred and hybrid lines of rice and maize showed different sensitivities to O 3 exposure. This study quantitatively demonstrates that C 4 crops respond less to elevated [O 3 ] than C 3 crops. This understanding could help maintain cropland productivity in an increasingly polluted atmosphere.

Ground state of Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 unraveled by hydrostatic pressure

Noncentrosymmetric Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 has attracted a lot of attention as a candidate for strongly correlated topological material, yet its experimental ground state remains a matter of contention. Two conflicting scenarios have emerged from a comparison to the prototypical Kondo insulator Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 : Either Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 is a spin-orbit-driven topological semimetal or a Kondo insulator with smaller Kondo coupling than its Pt counterpart. Here, we determine the ground state of Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 via electrical resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure, which is a clean symmetry-preserving tuning parameter that increases hybridization but virtually preserves spin-orbit coupling. Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 becomes more insulating under pressures up to 2.3 GPa, which is a signature of Ce-based Kondo insulating materials in the considered pressure range. Its small zero-pressure gap increases quadratically with pressure, similar to the behavior observed in the series Ce 3 Bi 4 (Pt 1 - x Pd x ) 3 , which indicates that Pt substitution and applied pressure have a similar effect. Finally, our result not only demonstrates that Kondo coupling, rather than spin-orbit coupling, is the main tuning parameter in this class of materials, but it also establishes that Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 has a narrow-gap Kondo insulating ground state.
