Syntheses and characterization of isotopically labeled 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB)

Synthesis and characterization of chemical analogues of TATB, where specific atoms in the structure have been isotopically substituted, are reported. 15 N, 2 H, and 18 O have replaced the naturally occurring isotope distributions in the amino and/or the nitro attendant sites and 13 C has replaced the carbon in the ring structure. A modified wet-amination method was used to produce the analogues, and the isotopic replacements were performed by selective choice of labeled precursors. Four 15 N-labeled compounds (N replaced in the amino and nitro positions), two deuterium-labeled compounds (hydrogens replaced on the amino groups), and one 13 C-labeled compound (C in the ring substituted) were synthesized of high isotopic and chemical purity. One partially labeled 18 O-labeled compound (O in the nitro position) was a result of incomplete labeling due to exchange reactions during synthesis. The compounds were characterized by various spectroscopic methods – mass spectrometry (MS), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SS-NMR), infrared (FTIR), powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), depending upon the substitution. In conclusion, these compounds have been critical to the efforts in understanding the decomposition pathways of TATB when exposed to abnormal thermal environments.

Stable perovskite-fluorite dual-phase composites synthesized by one-pot solid-state reactive sintering for protonic ceramic fuel cells

We report that this work synthesized a series of oxide composites with nominal compositions of BaCe 05 Zr 0.4 Y 0.1 O 3-δ (BCZY)-Ce 0.5 Y 0.5 O 2-δ (YDC) based on the BCZY/YDC molar ratios of 0.5:1, 1:1, 2:1, and 4:1 (BCZY-YDC-0.5–1, BCZY-YDC-1-1, BCZY-YDC-2-1, and BCZY-YDC-4-1) using a one-pot solid state reactive sintering (SSRS) method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and refinement proved that the one-pot SSRS at 1450 °C for 12 h could achieve the perovskite-fluorite dual-phase composites (DPCs) with the desired structure compositions. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the two DPCs of BCZY-YDC-1-1 and BCZY-YDC-2-1 formed excellent percolation for perovskite and fluorite phases. The conductivity measurement by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and the transference number measurement by the electromotive force (EMF) test proved that changing the BCZY/YDC molar ratio and operating condition could adjust the DPC's conduction property to make them suitable for electrolytes and electrode scaffolds for protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). The long-term conductivity testing and the crystal structure analysis after EMF testing under versatile conditions indicated that the DPCs of BCZY-YDC-2-1 and BCZY-YDC-1-1 were durable PCFC component materials. The PCFC button cells with the as-discovered BCZY-YDC-2-1 and BCZY-YDC-1-1 as an electrolyte and an anode scaffold, respectively, and the reported Ba–Ce–Fe–Co–O perovskite-perovskite composite as a cathode showed promising performance under H 2 /air gradient.

Roles of Mn and Co in Ni-rich layered oxide cathodes synthesized utilizing a Taylor Vortex Reactor

It is reported that layered oxides, composed of nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC), are sought after as cathode materials which provide improved energy density, cycle life, and safety in commercial lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Increasing Ni contents higher than 80% can provide even higher practical discharge capacities >200 mAh/g and similar to ~4 V discharge potential vs Li/Li + , making them promising cathodes for next generation LIBs. However, rapid capacity fade during cycling and heat-related safety concerns are delaying their successful transition to industry. We report systematic performance optimization of LiNiO 2 , LiNi 0.9 Mn 0.1 O 2 , and LiNi 0.9 Co 0.1 O 2 high Ni layered oxide cathodes synthesized by utilizing a Taylor Vortex Reactor. Co-free LiNi 0.9 Mn 0.1 O 2 cathode showed 200 mAh/g highest discharge capacity at 0.1 C rate with 84% retention after 103 cycles at 0.3C rate while LiNi 0.9 Co 0.1 O 2 cathode showed higher initial but poor cycle life (225 mAh/g highest discharge capacity at 0.1C rate with only 56% capacity retention after 103 cycles at 0.3 C rate. Synchrotron based X-ray diffraction (SXRD), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and focused ion beam (FIB) imaging of pristine and cycled cathodes after 103 cycles provided important information on degradation mechanism. The roles of Mn and Co on layered structure formation, charge balance, cationic mixing, and electrochemical performance were elucidated using the crystallographic information from XRD refinement and electronic state analysis from XAS providing valuable information to design future Ni-rich layered oxide cathodes.

Onion-Like nanoparticles of the metal–organic framework UiO-66 synthesized by sequential spike crystal growth

Reproducible size and morphology of metal–organic framework (MOF) particles are essential for tuning these materials for applications like heterogeneous catalysis. Particle size measurements from electron micrographs provide information about the impact of changing synthetic parameters on MOF growth, but reported data are usually limited to averages and statistical distributions. Further elucidating synthetic control parameters could facilitate studies of facet-dependent and non-classical growth mechanisms. Here, in this work, phase-pure nanoparticles of the MOF UiO-66 were synthesized using alternating spikes of zirconium and hafnium-based nodes, forming an onion-like structure with alternating layers of Zr-UiO-66 and Hf-UiO-66. In conventional, bright-field transmission electron micrographs, Hf-UiO-66 and Zr-UiO-66 layers appeared darker and lighter, respectively. Alternating layers of Hf-UiO-66 and Zr-UiO-66 were also apparent in elemental maps obtained using scanning transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Average particle sizes increased monotonically with each spike, and no Zr-only or Hf-only particles were observed after the first spike, indicating that new material was consistently incorporated onto existing seeds. Surface area of the onion-like particles and their uptake of Ni 2+ from solution were both between the values measured for Zr-UiO-66 and Hf-UiO-66. Results demonstrate the use of sequential spikes of nodes in monitoring crystal growth in MOFs.

Microstructural and crystallographic effects of sol-gel synthesized Ti-doped UO 2 sintered under reducing conditions

Titanium (Ti)-doped UO 2 microspheres of three different Ti concentrations (1000, 2000, and 4000 wppm) were synthesized using an internal gelation process. The microspheres were pressed into pellets, and a two-step heat treatment was applied to form monolithic cylindrical pellets with high densities (≥95%TD). Microstructure of these samples consisted of equiaxed grains with >300% increase in average grain size compared to the undoped UO 2 pellets. Secondary Ti-rich chemical phases corresponding to a liquid eutectic formed during sintering were observed at grain boundaries of UO 2 for samples doped with 4000 wppm Ti. Furthermore, these Ti-rich chemical phases were not observed in 1000 or 2000 wppm Ti samples at microscale using electron microscopy investigations. The 0.02–0.04% lower lattice parameter values for the Ti-doped UO 2 samples compared to the undoped UO 2 confirms the incorporation of Ti into the UO 2 lattice.

Characterization of zirconium carbide microspheres synthesized via internal gelation

Microspheres of zirconium carbide with grain size 40-320 nm were synthesized using internal gelation techniques and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and neutron total scattering. Compared with a polycrystalline benchmark ZrC sample prepared by plasma vapor phase deposition, the microspheres display lower variance in grain size and considerably lower microstrain representative of a more homogenous internal microstructure. However, excess carbon was present in the microspheres, evident in both the X-ray and neutron diffraction data as well as a corresponding hypostoichiometric ZrC phase. Furthermore, the excess carbon phase is assumed to be pockets of carbon that remained unreacted through the combined internal gelation and subsequent carbothermic reduction synthesis process. Atomic-scale structural characterization with neutron PDF analysis confirmed the presence of localized nano-sized domains of graphite-like carbon material.

Underlying limitations behind impedance rise and capacity fade of single crystalline Ni-rich cathodes synthesized via a molten-salt route

Layered oxide LiNi x Mn y Co z O 2 (NMC) cathodes are often synthesized as polycrystalline secondary particles. Due to intergranular fracture stemming from volume changes of randomly oriented primary particles during charge/discharge, the synthesis of larger single-crystalline cathodes is of high interest. In this work, molten salt assisted growth of micron-sized Ni-rich crystals is achieved with excellent crystallinity, low cation mixing, and negligible impurities. However, electrochemical performance is compromised by high surface reactivity resulting in decomposition of electrolyte and subsequent formation of a thick CEI layer. While intergranular fracture is eliminated, planar gliding and severe intragranular fracture along the (003) plane occurs in the high voltage region within the first few cycles and is associated primarily with H2 to H3 structural transitions. In addition, H2 to H3 transitions are highly irreversible with cyclic voltammograms revealing polarization growth within <5 cycles. Subsequently, the single-crystalline material exhibited markedly reduced available capacity and enhanced capacity fade from sharp impedance growth compared to its polycrystalline counterpart. Here, this work furthers a fundamental understanding into the limitations of single-crystalline Ni-rich cathodes, and the obstacles limiting the advantages offered by the single-crystalline morphology.

Novel white light-emitting CdSe:Mn 2+ synthesized by photo-assisted chemical bath deposition

Nowadays, white light-emitting materials have attracted extensive research due to their potential applications in lighting devices and displaying images. Several semiconductor nanoparticles have been explored to achieve efficient white light emission. In this work, we report on novel white light-emitting CdSe:Mn 2+ thin films synthesized by photo-assisted chemical bath deposition. The effect of varying the Mn 2+ ion concentrations on the thin film structure, morphology, and optical properties was investigated. X-ray powder diffraction results indicated that all the films annealed at 250 degrees C possessed a cubic structure, with crystallite sizes in the range of 1-130 nm. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated spherical nanoparticles with no significant changes with varying Mn 2+ doping concentrations. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the presence of the anticipated elements. The atomic force microscope revealed that the surface roughness has decreased with an increase in Mn 2+ ion concentrations but decreased for 0.7 %Mn 2+ . The UV-Vis absorption spectra showed absorption edges around 600-650 nm. Photoluminescence emission spectra excited at 3.8 eV (325 nm) showed emission bands at around 1.75 eV (709 nm), and 1.88 eV (659 nm), which were attributed to the band-to-band emission, and 4 T 1 ( 4 G)-> 6 A 1 ( 6 S) transitions of Mn 2+ ions, respectively, while emission bands at 2.35 eV (528 nm), and prominent at 3.17 eV (391 nm) were due to the glass substrate. The temperature-dependent luminescence showed a decrease in relative emission intensity with the increase in the operating temperature. The chromaticity colour coordinates showed white light-emitting thin films. These present findings open a new door to developing white light using CdSe thin films.

A universal etching method for synthesizing high-performance single crystal cathode materials

LiNi x MnyCo 1-x-y O 2 (NMC) is considered the most appealing cathode material due to its high energy density and low cost. However, the stability and safety concerns, caused by the degradation of polycrystalline cathode materials during cycling, have restricted their practical applications. To overcome this shortcoming, converting polycrystalline cathode to high-performance single-crystal cathode materials becomes an appealing solution. In this work, a universal etching approach is firstly developed to synthesize single-crystal cathode materials. The rate performance of the obtained single-crystal NMC111 is 10–15% more than that of polycrystalline NMC111 whereas the capacity retention of single-crystal NMC111 is enhanced by ~12% after 300 cycles at 0.5C. The obtained single-crystal NMC622 exhibits a pronounced improvement in rate performance, especially at high rates (~28.6% better at 5C and ~129% better at 10C) and has a comparable cycle performance compared to polycrystalline NMC622. Altogether, the findings propose an alternative approach to generate single-crystal particles with high energy density and cycle stability for the next generation lithium-ion batteries.

Optical properties of differing nanolayered structures of divalent europium doped barium fluoride thin films synthesized by pulsed laser deposition

Optically-active thin films are employed in a variety of applications, such as LEDs and photovoltaics, due to their ability to act as up- or down-photon energy converters. Their performance depends critically on their composition and structure; thus, the use of novel synthesis techniques that allow for their control at the nanoscale level can result in improved efficiency and practicality. Here, layered thin films consisting of Eu 2+ - doped BaF 2 nanocrystalline layers separated by amorphous Al 2 O 3 were synthesized via sequential pulsed laser deposition using three separate targets for the different components; this synthesis technique provides precise control of layer thickness at the nanoscale along with dopant distribution within the film. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy analysis verified the desired nano-layering. Post-deposition heat treatments in a nitrogen atmosphere resulted in samples exhibiting steady emission with a broad peak ranging from 400 to 600 nm and a shoulder at 410 nm. The CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates are x = 0.26-0.29 and y = 0.32-0.35 and vary as a function of the sample configuration. Because the chromaticity coordinates are close to those of a pure white light (x = 0.33, y = 0.33), these films demonstrate advantageous properties for applications with UV-pumped white light LEDs.

Synthesis of uranium mixed anion compounds synthesized using the Boron-Chalcogen Mixture method: Ba 6 Co 6 U 0·9 1S 13·5 O 0.5 and Ba 5·47 K 0·53 Zn 6 US 13·5 O 0.5

Mixed anion compounds have exhibited interesting structures and properties that differ from compounds only incorporating a single anion in their composition. Unfortunately, difficulties in the synthetic methods used to obtain these materials has slowed the evolution of this field, prompting investigations into alternate synthetic pathways to these materials. Our recently establish Boron-Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) method, which was originally developed for the synthesis of pure actinide chalcogenides from oxides, has been adapted to achieve the partial oxide to sulfide conversion of Ba 2 MUO 6 (M = Co, Zn) which resulted in two new uranium (IV/V) oxysulfide compounds, Ba 6 Co 6 U 0·91 S 13·5 O 0.5 and Ba 5·47 K 0·53 Zn 6 US 13·5 O 0.5 These compounds crystallize in the tetragonal crystal system adopting the space group I4/mcm. Finally, their syntheses, crystal structures, and trends observed in the pursuit of these new mixed anion compounds are reported.

Verification of stability and unraveling the electronic and physical properties of bulk and (001)-surfaces of newly synthesized Ti 2 ZnX (X = C, N) MAX phases

MAX phase family has been extended by the addition of late transition metals at the A-site with the expectation of diverse functional properties. Here, we present our systematic density functional investigation on the thermodynamic and phonon stabilities, elastic properties, including elastic constants, elastic moduli and elastic anisotropy of newly synthesized Ti 2 ZnX (X = C, N) phases in comparison with conventional Ti 2 AlX (X = C, N). Due to the smaller size of N as compared to C, the unit cell dimension is reduced when C atoms are replaced by N atoms at the X-site. Furthermore, the Ti 2 ZnC and Ti 2 ZnN are stable at the equilibrium volume of 110.84 Å 3 and 105.70 Å 3 . The thermodynamic, mechanical and dynamical stabilities are validated by estimating the formation energies, elastic constants and phonon dispersions, respectively. The elastic properties of Ti 2 ZnN are less anisotropic as compared to those of Ti 2 ZnC. To understand the thin-film characteristics in Ti 2 ZnX, the surface properties with (001)-terminated slabs are investigated. Both Ti 2 ZnX bulk and (001)-surfaces exhibit metal-like electronic structures. There is a strong covalent bonding between Ti-X and Ti-Zn atoms confirmed by the charge density map and Mulliken population analysis. Additional states are generated at the Fermi level (EF) due to the unusual d-p states hybridization between Ti and Zn atoms. The anisotropy in chemical bonding is confirmed by the cleavage energy difference between Ti-X and Ti-Zn. Here, Ti(X)-001 and Zn-001 terminations are stable surfaces; however, in terms of chemical potentials, Zn-001 termination is the most favourable in Ti 2 ZnX.

Evaluation of strategies to narrow the product chain-length distribution of microbially synthesized free fatty acids

The dominant strategy for tailoring the chain-length distribution of free fatty acids (FFA) synthesized by heterologous hosts is expression of a selective acyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) thioesterase. However, few of these enzymes can generate a precise (greater than 90% of a desired chain-length) product distribution when expressed in a microbial or plant host. The presence of alternative chain-lengths can complicate purification in situations where blends of fatty acids are not desired. We report the assessment of several strategies for improving the dodecanoyl-ACP thioesterase from the California bay laurel to exhibit more selective production of medium-chain free fatty acids to near exclusivity. We demonstrated that matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF MS) was an effective library screening technique for identification of thioesterase variants with favorable shifts in Journal Pre-proof chain-length specificity. This strategy proved to be a more effective screening technique than several rational approaches discussed herein. With this data, we isolated four thioesterase variants which exhibited a more selective FFA distribution over wildtype when expressed in the fatty acid accumulating E. coli strain, RL08. We then combined mutations from the MALDI isolates to generate BTE-MMD19, a thioesterase variant capable of producing free fatty acids consisting of 90% of C12 products. Of the four mutations which conferred a specificity shift, we noted that three affected the shape of the binding pocket, while one occurred on the positively charged acyl carrier protein landing pad. Lastly, we fused the maltose binding protein (MBP) from E. coli to the N – terminus of BTE-MMD19 to improve enzyme solubility and achieve a titer of 1.9 g per L of twelve-carbon fatty acids in a shake flask.

Predicting and Synthesizing Interface Stabilized 2D Layers

The compound (Pb 2 MnSe 3 ) 0.6 VSe 2 was predicted to be kinetically stable based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations on an island of Pb 2 MnSe 3 between layers of VSe 2 . This approach provides a high degree of freedom by not forcing interlayer lattice match, making it ideal to investigate the likelihood of formation of new incommensurate layer misfit structures. The free space around the island is critical, as it allows atoms to diffuse and hence exploring the local energy landscape around the initial configuration. (Pb 2 MnSe 3 ) 0.6 VSe 2 was synthesized via a near diffusionless reaction from precursors where a repeating sequence of elemental layers matches the local composition and layer sequence of the predicted compound. The VSe 2 layer consists of a Se–V–Se trilayer with octahedral coordination of the V atoms. The Pb 2 MnSe 3 layer consists of three rock-salt-like planes, with a MnSe layer between the planes of PbSe. The center MnSe plane stabilizes the puckering of the outer PbSe layers. Electrical properties indicate that (Pb 2 Mn 1 Se 3 ) 0.6 VSe 2 undergoes a charge density wave transition at ~100 K and orders ferromagnetically at 35 K. Overall, the combination of theory and experiment enables a faster convergence to new heterostructures than either approach in isolation.

Gas Permeation and Separation Characteristics of Microporous TpHz COF Membranes Synthesized by Substrate-Assisted Interfacial Polymerization

Microporous two-dimensional covalent organic framework (2D COF) membranes offer promise for gas separation applications, but their gas transport mechanism remains unclear. In this study, a TpHz 2D COF membrane supported on a macroporous nylon substrate is prepared by substrate-assisted interfacial polymerization under mild conditions. The formation of a continuous and dense thin (~300 nm thick) TpHz layer is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Characterization by X-ray diffraction, grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, and N 2 porosimetry qualitatively reveals the microstructures of the supported TpHz membranes, i.e., they comprise partially oriented 2D COF lamellar crystallites with moderate crystallinity in an eclipsed (AA) stacking geometry, centering the effective membrane pore size distribution at ~1.1 nm. Further, single gas permeation data show that the transport of common molecular gases, including H 2 , He, CH 4 , N 2 , and CO 2 , through the synthesized TpHz membranes follows the Knudsen transport mechanism, where single gas permeance decreases with an increasing molecular weight and permeation temperature. Binary gas separation results show that in the equimolar CO 2 /N 2 mixture, the presence of the CO 2 surface flow slightly hinders the N 2 flow at room temperature due to the reduced membrane channel size by the adsorbed CO 2 gas layer on TpHz’s pore wall. In contrast, permeation of the equimolar CH 4 /N 2 binary mixture does not exhibit a discernible surface flow of both gases due to their much lower gas uptake on TpHz, and their transport mechanism follows Knudsen-like behavior.

Experimental Investigation of Thermodynamic Stabilization in Boron Imidazolate Frameworks (BIFs) Synthesized by Mechanochemistry

This study experimentally explores the energetics for the formation of boron–imidazolate frameworks (BIFs), which are synthesized by mechanochemistry. The topologically similar frameworks employ the same tetratopic linker based on tetrakis(imidazolyl)boric acid but differ in the monovalent cation metal nodes. This permits assessment of the stabilizing effect of metal nodes in frameworks with sodalite (SOD) and diamondoid (dia) topologies. The enthalpy of formation from endmembers (metal oxide and linker), which define thermodynamic stability of the structures, has been determined by use of acid solution calorimetry. The results show that heavier metal atoms in the node promote greater energetic stabilization of denser structures. Overall, in BIFs the relation between cation descriptors (ionic radius and electronegativity) and thermodynamic stability depends on framework topology. Thermodynamic stability increases with the metallic character of the cation employed as the metal node, independent of the framework topology. In conclusion, the results suggest unifying aspects for thermodynamic stabilization across MOF systems.
