Structural complexity of γ-Al 2 O 3 : The nature of vacancy ordering and the structure of complex antiphase boundaries

The structure of γ-Al2O3 remains largely undetermined despite decades of research. This is due to the high degree of disorder, which poses significant challenges for structural analysis using conventional crystallographic approaches. Herein, we study the structure of γ-Al2O3 with Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) and ab-initio calculations to provide a complete structural description. We show that the microstructure can be understood in terms of two key structural features of nanoscale spinel domains and finite thickness segments termed as complex antiphase boundaries (cAPB) that provide the domain interconnectivity. The spinel domains have a distinctive preference for vacancy ordering, which can be rationalized in terms of a structure with a stacking disorder. Tetragonal P4 1 2 1 2 or monoclinic P2 1 models, all based on the identical motif, can be considered as representative ordered forms. Individual spinel domains are interconnected via cAPBs, which adopt a distinct non-spinel bonding environment of δ-Al 2 O 3 . The most common cAPB consists of a single delta motif with thickness of just 0.6 nm on (001), with the resulting displacement a/4 [101]. Remarkably, the cAPBs are shown to energetically stabilize the spinel domains of γ-Al 2 O 3 explaining their high abundance. We demonstrate how the tetragonal distortions naturally arise in this intricate microstructure and place the proposed model in the context of phase transformations to high temperature transition aluminas.

Crystal Structure of Colloidally Prepared Metastable Ag 2 Se Nanocrystals

Structural polymorphism is known for many bulk materials; however, on the nanoscale metastable polymorphs tend to form more readily than in the bulk, and with more structural variety. One such metastable polymorph observed for colloidal Ag 2 Se nanocrystals has traditionally been referred to as the “tetragonal” phase. While there are reports on the chemistry and properties of this metastable polymorph, its crystal structure, and therefore electronic structure, has yet to be determined. We report that an anti-PbCl 2 -like structure type (space group P2 1 /n) more accurately describes the powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray total scattering patterns of colloidal Ag 2 Se nanocrystals prepared by several different methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that this anti-PbCl 2 -like Ag 2 Se polymorph is a dynamically stable, narrow-band-gap semiconductor. Here, the anti-PbCl 2 -like structure of Ag 2 Se is a low-lying metastable polymorph at 5–25 meV/atom above the ground state, depending on the exchange-correlation functional used.

Controlling Amphiphilic Polymer Folding beyond the Primary Structure with Protein-Mimetic Di(Phenylalanine)

While methods for polymer synthesis have proliferated, their functionality pales in comparison to natural biopolymers–strategies are limited for building the intricate network of noncovalent interactions necessary to elicit complex, protein-like functions. Using a bioinspired di(phenylalanine) acrylamide (FF) monomer, we explored the impact of various noncovalent interactions in generating ordered assembled structures. Amphiphilic copolymers were synthesized that exhibit β-sheet-like local structure upon collapsing into single-chain assemblies in aqueous environments. Here, the systematic analysis of a series of amphiphilic copolymers illustrated that the global collapse is primarily driven by hydrophobic forces. Hydrogen-bonding and aromatic interactions stabilize local structure, as β-sheet-like interactions were identified via circular dichroism and thioflavin T fluorescence. Similar analysis of phenylalanine (F) and alanine-phenylalanine acrylamide (AF) copolymers found that distancing the aromatic residue from the polymer backbone is sufficient to induce β-sheet-like local structure akin to the FF copolymers; however, the interactions between AF subunits are less stable than those formed by FF. Further, hydrogen-bond donating hydrophilic monomers disrupt internal structure formed by FF within collapsed assemblies. Collectively, these results illuminate design principles for the facile incorporation of multiple facets of protein-mimetic, higher-order structure within folded synthetic polymers.

Advances in Structural Integrity Analysis Methods for Aging Metallic Airframe Structures with Local Damage

Analysis methodologies for predicting fatigue-crack growth from rivet holes in panels subjected to cyclic loads and for predicting the residual strength of aluminum fuselage structures with cracks and subjected to combined internal pressure and mechanical loads are described. The fatigue-crack growth analysis methodology is based on small-crack theory and a plasticity induced crack-closure model, and the effect of a corrosive environment on crack-growth rate is included. The residual strength analysis methodology is based on the critical crack-tip-opening-angle fracture criterion that characterizes the fracture behavior of a material of interest, and a geometric and material nonlinear finite element shell analysis code that performs the structural analysis of the fuselage structure of interest. The methodologies have been verified experimentally for structures ranging from laboratory coupons to full-scale structural components. Analytical and experimental results based on these methodologies are described and compared for laboratory coupons and flat panels, small-scale pressurized shells, and full-scale curved stiffened panels. The residual strength analysis methodology is sufficiently general to include the effects of multiple-site damage on structural behavior.

Synthesis, Structural Characterization and Chemical Bonding of Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and its Quaternary Derivatives with Eu and Alkaline Earth Metal (Mg, Ca, Ba) Substitutions. A Tale of Seven Li‐Containing Stannides and Two Complex Crystal Structures

In this paper, we discuss the synthesis and the structural characterization of the new ternary compound Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and its six quaternary derivatives, where alkaline earth metals (Ca, Mg, Ba) and the rare earth metal Eu are substituted, yielding crystalline phases of monoclinic or orthorhombic symmetry. The title compounds were synthesized via high‐temperature solid‐state reactions of the corresponding elements. The crystal structures were determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction methods. The (Sr,Ca) 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and Eu 7 (Mg,Li) 6 Sn 12 phases represent a new structure type (space group P 2/ m , No. 10) while Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and the rest of the title phases crystallize in the orthorhombic base‐centered space group Cmmm (No. 65) which is similar to the Eu 7 Li 8– x Sn 10+ x ( x ≈ 2.0) phase with the Ce 7 Li 8 Ge 10 structure type (Pearson code oC 50). Careful examination of the resulting structures shows intricate disordering between Li and Sn atoms, which is governed by the total number of valence electrons. The discussion of experimental results is also supported by DFT electronic structure calculations.

Quantifying structural errors in cloud condensation nuclei activity from reduced representation of aerosol size distributions

Aerosol effects on clouds and radiation are the dominant contribution to uncertainty in radiative forcing relative to the pre-industrial atmosphere. While previous studies have assessed the impact of parametric uncertainty on modeled forcing, structural errors from the numerical representation of particle distributions have not been well quantified. Here we present a framework for quantifying error in aerosol size distributions and cloud condensation nuclei activity, which we apply to the widely used 4-mode version of the Modal Aerosol Module (MAM4). Box model predictions from the MAM4 are evaluated against the Particle Monte Carlo Model for Simulating Aerosol Interactions and Chemistry (PartMC-MOSAIC), a benchmark model that tracks the evolution of individual particles. We show that size distributions simulated by MAM4 diverge from those simulated by PartMC-MOSAIC after only a few hours of aging by condensation and coagulation in polluted conditions, which leads to large errors in modeled cloud condensation nuclei concentrations. We find that differences between MAM4 and PartMC-MOSAIC are largest under polluted conditions, where the size distribution evolves rapidly though aging by condensation of semi-volatile substances and coagulation among particles. These findings suggest that structural error in modeled aerosol properties contributes to the large inter-model variability in aerosol radiative forcing.

Charge ordering and structural transition in the new organic conductor {delta}'-(BEDT-TTF){sub 2}CF{sub 3}CF{sub 2}SO{sub 3}.

We report structural, transport, and optical properties and electronic structure calculations of the delta'-(BEDT-TTF) 2CF3CF2SO3 (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene) organic conductor that has been synthesized by electrocrystallization. Electronic structure calculations demonstrate the quasi-one-dimensional Fermi surfaces of the compound, while the optical spectra are characteristic for a dimer-Mott insulator. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements reveal the structural phase transition at 200 K from the ambient-temperature monoclinic P2(1)/m phase to the low-temperature orthorhombic Pca2(1) phase, while the resistivity measurements clearly show the first order semiconductor-semiconductor transition at the same temperature. This transition is accompanied by charge-ordering as it is confirmed by splitting of charge-sensitive vibrational modes observed in the Raman and infrared spectra. The horizontal stripe charge-order pattern is suggested based on the crystal structure, band structure calculations, and optical spectra.

Role of Zeolite Structural Properties toward Iodine Capture: A Head-to-head Evaluation of Framework Type and Chemical Composition

This study evaluated zeolite-based sorbents for iodine gas [I2(g)] capture. Based on the framework structures and porosities, five zeolites, including two faujasite (FAU), one ZSM-5 (MFI), one mesoMFI, one ZSM-22 (TON), as well as two mesoporous materials, were evaluated for I2(g) capture at room temperature and 150 °C in an iodine-saturated environment. From these preliminary studies, the three best-performing zeolites were ion-exchanged with Ag+ and evaluated for I2(g) capture under similar conditions. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy data suggest that Ag-FAU frameworks were the materials with the highest capacity for I2(g) in this study, showing ~3× higher adsorption compared to Ag-mordenite (Ag-MOR) at room temperature, but X-ray diffraction measurements show that the faujasite structure collapsed during the adsorption studies because of dealumination. The Ag-MFI zeolites are decent sorbents in real-life applications, showing both good sorption capacities and higher stability. In-depth analyses and characterizations, including synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, revealed the influence of structural and chemical properties of zeolites on the performance for iodine adsorption from the gas phase.

Structural Evolution and Stability of Rh/TiO 2 Catalysts under CO 2 Hydrogenation Conditions: Influence of the Initial Rh Structure

Characterizing catalyst stability by identifying the predominant mechanisms, timescales and driving forces of catalyst reconstruction under relevant reaction conditions is necessary for the design and commercialization of new catalysts. Here, in this paper, we study Rh/TiO 2 catalysts under CO 2 hydrogenation conditions (773 K, 75% H 2 , 25% CO 2 ) at high conversion and utilize reactivity studies along with ex-situ and in-situ spectroscopy and microscopy to characterize changes in catalyst activity and structure as a function of time on stream and the initial catalyst structure. This is a prototypical catalyst for CO 2 hydrogenation where Rh structure and Rh-TiO 2 interactions have been proposed to explain reactivity, selectivity (between CO and CH 4 formation) and catalyst stability. The influence of the initial Rh structure (varying from Rh single atoms to Rh nanoparticles), support stability, regeneration and pretreatment(s), and the chemical potential(s) of the reaction environment on reaction selectivity and catalyst stability were explored. The product selectivity between CO and CH 4 was determined to be dependent on the relative fraction of Rh single atoms and Rh nanoparticle-TiO 2 interfacial sites under reaction conditions, each exhibiting distinct stability under prolonged time on stream. Surprisingly, Rh single atoms exhibited stability for the duration of 90 h reactivity measurements, even at high Rh density (≥ 1.8 Rh atoms/nm 2 ) on the support, while Rh nanoparticles sintered under reaction conditions. As a result, all catalysts exhibited increasing selectivity to CO with increasing time on stream (> 10 h). We conclude the distribution of Rh structures evolved over time under reaction conditions through three distinct reconstruction mechanisms (Rh particle fragmentation, Ostwald ripening, and particle migration and coalescence) that occurred on varying timescales. Catalyst stability on the ~90 h time scale was ultimately controlled by the initial Rh structure.

Quaternary structure independent folding of voltage-gated ion channel pore domain subunits

Every voltage-gated ion channel (VGIC) has a pore domain (PD) made from four subunits, each comprising an antiparallel transmembrane helix pair bridged by a loop. The extent to which PD subunit structure requires quaternary interactions is unclear. In this report we present crystal structures of a set of bacterial voltage-gated sodium channel (BacNa V ) 'pore only' proteins that reveal a surprising collection of non-canonical quaternary arrangements in which the PD tertiary structure is maintained. This context-independent structural robustness, supported by molecular dynamics simulations, indicates that VGIC-PD tertiary structure is independent of quaternary interactions. This fold occurs throughout the VGIC superfamily and in diverse transmembrane and soluble proteins. Strikingly, characterization of PD subunit-binding Fabs indicates that non-canonical quaternary PD conformations can occur in full-length VGICs. Together, our data demonstrate that the VGIC-PD is an autonomously folded unit. This property has implications for VGIC biogenesis, understanding functional states, de novo channel design, and VGIC structural origins.

Molecular structural dataset of lignin macromolecule elucidating experimental structural compositions

Abstract Lignin is one of the most abundant biopolymers in nature and has great potential to be transformed into high-value chemicals. However, the limited availability of molecular structure data hinders its potential industrial applications. Herein, we present the Lignin Structural (LGS) Dataset that includes the molecular structure of milled wood lignin focusing on two major monomeric units (coniferyl and syringyl), and the six most common interunit linkages (phenylpropane β-aryl ether, resinol, phenylcoumaran, biphenyl, dibenzodioxocin, and diaryl ether). The dataset constitutes a unique resource that covers a part of lignin’s chemical space characterized by polymer chains with lengths in the range of 3 to 25 monomer units. Structural data were generated using a sequence-controlled polymer generation approach that was calibrated to match experimental lignin properties. The LGS dataset includes 60 K newly generated lignin structures that match with high accuracy (~90%) the experimentally determined structural compositions available in the literature. The LGS dataset is a valuable resource to advance lignin chemistry research, including computational simulation approaches and predictive modelling.
