Singularities in the gravitational capture of dark matter through long-range interactions

Here, we re-examine the gravitational capture of dark matter (DM) through long-range interactions. We demonstrate that neglecting the thermal motion of target particles, which is often a good approximation for short-range capture, results in parametrically inaccurate results for long-range capture. When the particle mediating the scattering process has a mass that is small in comparison to the momentum transfer in scattering events, correctly incorporating the thermal motion of target particles results in a quadratic, rather than logarithmic, sensitivity to the mediator mass, which substantially enhances the capture rate. We quantitatively assess the impact of this finite temperature effect on the captured DM population in the Sun as a function of mediator mass. We find that capture of DM through light dark photons, as in e.g. mirror DM, can be powerfully enhanced, with self-capture attaining a geometric limit over much of parameter space. For visibly-decaying dark photons, thermal corrections are not large in the Sun, but may be important in understanding long-range DM capture in more massive bodies such as Population III stars. We additionally provide the first calculation of the long-range DM self-evaporation rate.

Generating and processing optical waveforms using spectral singularities

Here, we show that a laser at threshold can be utilized to generate the class of coherent and transform-limited waveforms (vt — z) m e i(kz—ωt) at optical frequencies. We derive these properties analytically and demonstrate them in semiclassical time-domain laser simulations. We then utilize these waveforms to expand other waveforms with high modulation frequencies and demonstrate theoretically the feasibility of complex-frequency coherent absorption at optical frequencies, with efficient energy transduction and cavity loading. This approach has potential applications in quantum computing, photonic circuits, and biomedicine.

Possible coexistence of magnetism and paramagnetic singularity in lightly Fe-doped WTe 2

Topological semimetals possess nodal or nodal-line phases where conduction and valence bands touch at points or lines in momentum space, respectively. Such band touching is symmetry protected and gives rise to exotic and interesting electronic properties. Coupling topological order with magnetism provides a platform for exploring time-reversal (TR) symmetry breaking topological physics, such as axion electrodynamics, inverse spin-galvanic effect, and the quantized anomalous Hall effect. The Weyl semimetal (WSM) requires breaking either TR symmetry or lattice inversion symmetry (I). By doping inversion-symmetry-broken WSM with magnetic dopants, one can expect to create a WSM with both symmetries breaking simultaneously. Here, structural, electrical, and magnetic properties of Fe x ⁢W 1–x Te 2 (x = 0 and 0.011) are reported. It is revealed that, with a small Fe doping concentration (x = 0.011), a ferromagnetism is induced at low temperature (<10 K). Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements in Fe 0.011 ⁢W 0.989 ⁢Te 2 further reveal only substitution and no intercalated dopants being observed. The probabilities of the Fe substitutions at the two nonequivalent W sites are quantified with equal probability. The dl/dV point spectra indicates that the Fe substitution in WTe 2 manifests itself as electron doping regardless of doping sites. The results clearly reveal the possible coexistence of magnetism and Weyl points in the lightly Fe doped WTe2 at low temperature. Furthermore, this provides an ideal system for further study on the interplay between the topological Weyl points and the TR symmetry breaking.
