A multichannel physiological data/voice telemetry system

A seven channel physiological telemetry system was designed, constructed, and tested for a space environment to transfer physiological and voice information to and from an astronaut. Three ECG leads were monitored simultaneously, and two-way voice communication was achieved. The portable unit operated properly under ground based station (GBS) control. The major design problem was associated with the constraints of a wide bandwidth FM transmitter with crystal control combined with the tri-state logic format used. However, by using an ''indirect FM'' scheme and incorporating additional waveshaping circuits at the GBS, proper operation of the system was obtained. In the present form, the telemetry system has capability for seven channels of low level (2.5 mv peak maximum) physiological signals with bandwidths between 0.03 Hz and 100 Hz. Additional signal conditioning and modification of the instrumentation amplifier gains are required for other signals.

Closed Loop Testing of Microphonics Algorithms Using a Cavity Emulator

An analog crystal filter based cavity emulator is modified with reverse biased varactor diodes to provide a tuning range of around 160 Hz. The piezo drive voltage of the resonance controller is used to detune the cavity through the bias voltage. A signal conditioning and summing circuit allows the introduction of microphonics disturbance from a signal source or using real microphonics data from cavity testing. This setup is used in closed loop with a cavity controller and resonance controller to study the effectiveness of resonance control algorithms suitable for superconducting cavities.

Unipolar pulse and bipolar noise testing of wideband signal noise conditioner (MC476-0132-0034)

Information is presented on performance characteristics of the shuttle orbiter wideband signal conditioner when subjected to special types of input signals. Design analysis of the signal flow path through the signal conditioning amplifier was performed followed by acutal testing of the amplifier with various signal inputs. Results indicate that the signal conditioner should perform acceptably if the shuttle orbiter flight vibration signal levels are in accord with preflight predictions.

Vibration damping characteristics of graphite/epoxy composites for large space structures

Limited data on extensional and flexural damping of small specimens of graphite/epoxy and unreinforced epoxy resin were obtained. Flexural damping was measured using a forced vibration technique based on resonant flexural vibration of shaker excited double cantilever specimens. Extensional damping was measured by subjecting similar specimens to low frequency sinusoidal oscillation in a servohydraulic tensile testing machine while plotting load versus extensional strain. Damping was found to vary slowly and continuously over the frequency range 0.01 - 1000 Hz, and no drastic transitions were observed. Composite damping was found to be less than neat resin damping. Comparison of small specimen damping values with assembled column damping values seems to indicate that, for those materials, material damping is more important than joint damping. The data reported was limited not by the test apparatus, but by signal conditioning and data acquisition. It is believed that filtering of the strain gage signals and the use of digital storage with slow playback will make it possible to extend the frequency and amplitude ranges significantly.

Frequency-Domain Signal Processor For Laser Velocimeter

Dynamic range and accuracy increased. New signal processor for laser-velocimeter (LV) applications overcomes major limitations of present signal processors. System requires no input-signal conditioning other than that provided by amplifiers; it operates in instantaneous mode at signal levels from bursts containing as few as 150 photons down to photon-resolved regime in averaging mode. Digital value of signal-burst frequency sent to external computer system for conversion to value of absolute frequency. Residual turbulence intensity 0.2 percent, with little dependence on signal-to-noise ratio.

Data-Analysis System for Entry, Descent, and Landing

A report describes the Entry Descent Landing Data Analysis (EDA), which is a system of signal-processing software and computer hardware for acquiring status data conveyed by multiple-frequency-shift-keying tone signals transmitted by a spacecraft during descent to the surface of a remote planet. The design of the EDA meets the challenge of processing weak, fluctuating signals that are Doppler-shifted by amounts that are only partly predictable. The software supports both real-time and post processing. The software performs fast-Fourier-transform integration, parallel frequency tracking with prediction, and mapping of detected tones to specific events. The use of backtrack and refinement parallel-processing threads helps to minimize data gaps. The design affords flexibility to enable division of a descent track into segments, within each of which the EDA is configured optimally for processing in the face of signal conditions and uncertainties. A dynamic-lock-state feature enables the detection of signals using minimum required computing power less when signals are steadily detected, more when signals fluctuate. At present, the hardware comprises eight dual-processor personal-computer modules and a server. The hardware is modular, making it possible to increase computing power by adding computers.

Turbulence measurements in the compressor exit flow of a General Electric CF6-50 engine

Ruggedized cooled film probes were used to measure CF6-50 compressor exit turbulence properties at three different engine idle condition test points. The turbulence probe was coupled to a constant temperature anemometer and signal conditioning system. An on-line readout system connected to the anemometer was used to check the data as it was acquired. At engine idle conditions, the turbulence intensity ranged from 4.8 percent to 5.6 percent and the length scale ranged from 5.64 cm to 6.95 cm. The length scale values are somewhat larger than the passage height at the measurement plane (5.54 cm), which indicates that the shape of the turbulent eddies are elongated in the axial direction. The microscale values range from about 0.73 cm to about 0.98 cm. Power spectral density distributions show that a large proportion of the turbulent energy at the measurement plane is concentrated at frequencies below one kilohertz.

Likelihood alarm displays

In a likelihood alarm display (LAD) information about event likelihood is computed by an automated monitoring system and encoded into an alerting signal for the human operator. Operator performance within a dual-task paradigm was evaluated with two LADs: a color-coded visual alarm and a linguistically coded synthetic speech alarm. The operator's primary task was one of tracking; the secondary task was to monitor a four-element numerical display and determine whether the data arose from a 'signal' or 'no-signal' condition. A simulated 'intelligent' monitoring system alerted the operator to the likelihood of a signal. The results indicated that (1) automated monitoring systems can improve performance on primary and secondary tasks; (2) LADs can improve the allocation of attention among tasks and provide information integrated into operator decisions; and (3) LADs do not necessarily add to the operator's attentional load.

Theoretical and experimental investigation of a rectenna element for microwave power transmission

A microstrip measurement system has been designed to analyze packaged GaAs Schottky barrier diodes under small and large signal conditions. The nonlinear equivalent circuit parameters of the diode are determined using a small signal test method that analyzes the diode's scattering parameters at various bias levels. The experimental results of a 2.45 GHz diode are verified using a nonlinear circuit simulation program based on a multireflection algorithm. A 35 GHz rectenna has been built using a microstrip patch antenna and Ka-band mixer diode. The measured efficiency was 29 percent at 120 mW input power. A frequency selective surface is designed using an equivalent circuit model to reduce the second harmonic radiations for a 2.45 GHz rectenna. Theoretical results are found to be in fairly good agreement with experiments.

Optical device for in-line and real-time monitoring of microorganisms

A multi-wavelength laser diode based optical sensor system capable of monitoring the dynamics and physiological changes of a microorganism culture in real-time. The microorganism culture from a microorganism production chamber is pumped to a flow chamber. Laser diodes emit light at certain wavelengths through the flow chamber, which is sensed by photodiodes. A laser control circuitry is operatively connected to the laser diodes and a signal conditioning circuitry is operatively connected to the photodiodes. A microprocessor reads and records voltage signals corresponding to the wavelengths. A data acquisition system converts said voltage signals into measurements of biological parameters, which are displayed on a graphical user interface and allow a user to monitor the measurements in real time.

Smart Sensor Node Development, Testing and Implementation for ISHM

A main design criterion for a robust Integrated Systems Health Management (ISHM) system is summed up best by the statement "No data is better than bad data". Traditional data acquisition systems are calibrated in a controlled environment and guaranteed to perform bounded by their tested conditions. To successfully design and implement a real world ISHM system, the data acquisition and signal conditioning needs to function in an uncontrolled environment. Development and testing focuses on a design with the ability to self check in order to extend calibration times, report internal faults and drifts and notify the overall system when the data acquisition is not performing as it should. All of this will be designed in a system that is flexible, requiring little redesign to be deployed on a wide variety of systems. Development progress and testing results will be reported.

Method and apparatus for positioning a robotic end effector

A robotic end effector and operation protocol for a reliable grasp of a target object irrespective of the target's contours is disclosed. A robotic hand includes a plurality of jointed fingers, one of which, like a thumb, is in opposed relation to the other. Each finger is comprised of at least two jointed sections, and provided with reflective proximity sensors, one on the inner surface of each finger section. Each proximity sensor comprises a transmitter of a beam of radiant energy and means for receiving reflections of the transmitted energy when reflected by a target object and for generating electrical signals responsive thereto. On the fingers opposed to the thumb, the proximity sensors on the outermost finger sections are aligned in an outer sensor array and the sensors on the intermediate finger sections and sensors on the innermost finger sections are similarly arranged to form an intermediate sensor array and an inner sensor array, respectively. The invention includes a computer system with software and/or circuitry for a protocol comprising the steps in sequence of: (1) approach axis alignment to maximize the number of outer layer sensors which detect the target; (2) non-contact contour following the target by the robot fingers to minimize target escape potential; and (3) closing to rigidize the target including dynamically re-adjusting the end effector finger alignment to compensate for target motion. A signal conditioning circuit and gain adjustment means are included to maintain the dynamic range of low power reflection signals.

Synchronization Scheme For PPM Communication

Synchronization achieved under difficult, low-signal conditions. Synchronization scheme for pulse-position modulation (PPM) matches pulse, word, and frame timeslots of receiver to received signals to ensure proper identification of received pulses. Involves brief sequence of synchronizing pulses within each transmitted frame and relies on periodic repetition of synchronizing pulses for verification. Use of verification reduces number of synchronizing pulses required but increases time required to achieve synchronization.

Performance Evaluation of Block Acquisition and Tracking Algorithms Using an Open Source GPS Receiver Platform

Location technologies have many applications in wireless communications, military and space missions, etc. US Global Positioning System (GPS) and other existing and emerging Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are expected to provide accurate location information to enable such applications. While GNSS systems perform very well in strong signal conditions, their operation in many urban, indoor, and space applications is not robust or even impossible due to weak signals and strong distortions. The search for less costly, faster and more sensitive receivers is still in progress. As the research community addresses more and more complicated phenomena there exists a demand on flexible multimode reference receivers, associated SDKs, and development platforms which may accelerate and facilitate the research. One of such concepts is the software GPS/GNSS receiver (GPS SDR) which permits a facilitated access to algorithmic libraries and a possibility to integrate more advanced algorithms without hardware and essential software updates. The GNU-SDR and GPS-SDR open source receiver platforms are such popular examples. This paper evaluates the performance of recently proposed block-corelator techniques for acquisition and tracking of GPS signals using open source GPS-SDR platform.

Frequency-Domain Deconvolution for Flight Dynamics Applications

A deconvolution method is presented for estimating input data from measured output data and a model of the dynamic process involved. The method uses an optimal Wiener filter for separating the measured data into signal and noise components, and a high-accuracy Fourier transform for inverting the model dynamics in the frequency domain. The method is an extension of optimal Fourier smoothing, and uses a technique to enhance the contrast between the signal and noise spectra in designing the Wiener filter. The deconvolution method was applied to simulation and flight test data for the purposes of removing unwanted distortions introduced by signal-conditioning filters and sensor dynamics, and for reconstructing turbulence inputs from measured sensor data. Results indicated hat the method performs well given good signal-to-noise levels and accurate models of the dynamic process.
