The maximum extent of the filaments and sheets in the cosmic web: an analysis of the SDSS DR17

Filaments and sheets are striking visual patterns in cosmic web. The maximum extent of these large-scale structures are difficult to determine due to their structural variety and complexity. We construct a volume-limited sample of galaxies in a cubic region from the SDSS, divide it into smaller subcubes and shuffle them around. We quantify the average filamentarity and planarity in the 3D galaxy distribution as a function of the density threshold and compare them with those from the shuffled realizations of the original data. The analysis is repeated for different shuffling lengths by varying the size of the subcubes. The average filamentarity and planarity in the shuffled data show a significant reduction when the shuffling scales are smaller than the maximum size of the genuine filaments and sheets. We observe a statistically significant reduction in these statistical measures even at a shuffling scale of $\sim 130 \, {{\, \rm Mpc}}$, indicating that the filaments and sheets in three dimensions can extend up to this length scale. They may extend to somewhat larger length scales that are missed by our analysis due to the limited size of the SDSS data cube. We expect to determine these length scales by applying this method to deeper and larger surveys in future.

3D-printed sheet jet for stable megahertz liquid sample delivery at X-ray free-electron lasers

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) can probe chemical and biological reactions as they unfold with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. A principal challenge in this pursuit involves the delivery of samples to the X-ray interaction point in such a way that produces data of the highest possible quality and with maximal efficiency. This is hampered by intrinsic constraints posed by the light source and operation within a beamline environment. For liquid samples, the solution typically involves some form of high-speed liquid jet, capable of keeping up with the rate of X-ray pulses. However, conventional jets are not ideal because of radiation-induced explosions of the jet, as well as their cylindrical geometry combined with the X-ray pointing instability of many beamlines which causes the interaction volume to differ for every pulse. This complicates data analysis and contributes to measurement errors. An alternative geometry is a liquid sheet jet which, with its constant thickness over large areas, eliminates the problems related to X-ray pointing. Since liquid sheets can be made very thin, the radiation-induced explosion is reduced, boosting their stability. These are especially attractive for experiments which benefit from small interaction volumes such as fluctuation X-ray scattering and several types of spectroscopy. Although their use has increased for soft X-ray applications in recent years, there has not yet been wide-scale adoption at XFELs. Here, gas-accelerated liquid sheet jet sample injection is demonstrated at the European XFEL SPB/SFX nano focus beamline. Its performance relative to a conventional liquid jet is evaluated and superior performance across several key factors has been found. This includes a thickness profile ranging from hundreds of nanometres to 60 nm, a fourfold increase in background stability and favorable radiation-induced explosion dynamics at high repetition rates up to 1.13 MHz. Its minute thickness also suggests that ultrafast single-particle solution scattering is a possibility.

Statistical Generation of Ocean Forcing With Spatiotemporal Variability for Ice Sheet Models

Melting of ice at the base of floating ice shelves that fringe the Antarctic ice sheet has been identified as a significant source of uncertainty in sea level rise projections. Part of this uncertainty derives from chaotic internal variability of the coupled ocean-atmosphere system. For numerical ice sheet model projections, this uncertainty has not previously been quantified because of the prohibitive computational expense of running large climate model ensembles. Here, we develop and demonstrate a technique that generates independent realizations of internal climate variability from a single climate model simulation. Building on previous developments in model emulation, this technique uses empirical orthogonal function decomposition and Fourier-phase randomization to generate statistically consistent realizations of spatiotemporal variability fields for the target climate variable. The method facilitates efficient sampling of a wide range of climate trajectories, which can also be incorporated within ice sheet or other physical models to represent feedback processes.

A detection of the sea level fingerprint of Greenland Ice Sheet melt

Rapid melting of ice sheets and glaciers drives a unique geometry, or fingerprint, of sea level change. However, the detection of individual fingerprints has been challenging because of sparse observations at high latitudes and the difficulty of disentangling ocean dynamic variability from the signal. Here we predict the fingerprint of Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) melt using recent ice mass loss estimates from radar altimetry data and model reconstructions of nearby glaciers and compare this prediction to an independent, altimetry-derived sea surface height trend corrected for ocean dynamic variability in the region adjacent to the ice sheet. A statistically significant correlation between the two fields (P < 0.001) provides an unambiguous observational detection of the near-field sea level fingerprint of recent GrIS melting in our warming world.

Towards the Commercialization of the All-Solid-State Li-ion Battery: Local Bonding Structure and the Reversibility of Sheet-Style Si-PAN Anodes

A slurry-coated sheet-style Si-based anode is developed for use in all-solid-state Li-ion batteries. Inexpensive, mixed-conducting polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is utilized as both binder and conductive additive, enabling Si-rich electrodes (70 wt%) to attain large reversible capacities ~1,500 mAh g-1 (Si) at 1 C rates (>3 mA cm -2 ). Cross sectional analysis of a discharged all-solid-state half-cell indicates that the Si-PAN anode achieves the largest volumetric specific capacity ever reported for a Li-ion electrode (>1500 mAh cm -3 ). Ex situ Raman spectroscopic studies reveal that the anodes' reversibility is attributed to the preservation of small tetrahedrally coordinated clusters within their Si nanoparticles upon discharge. We therefore argue that careful lithiation limitations should be implemented in all Si-based Li-ion anodes to preserve this local tetrahedral atomic structure. Furthermore, the slurry-coated sheet-style Si-PAN anodes have been successfully cycled in all-solid-state full-cells against high-voltage nickel-rich NMC 811 composite cathodes to encourage future commercialization of similar sheet-style all-solid-state designs.

Europa Modifies Jupiter's Plasma Sheet

Jupiter's plasma sheet has been understood to be primarily composed of Io-genic sulfur and oxygen, along with protons at lower mass density. These ions move radially away from Jupiter, filling its magnetosphere. The material in the plasma sheet interacts with Europa, which is also a source of magnetospheric pickup ions, primarily hydrogen and oxygen. Juno's thermal plasma instrument JADE, the Jovian Auroral Distributions Experiment, has provided comprehensive in situ observations of the composition of Jupiter's plasma sheet ions with its Time-of-Flight mass-spectrometry capabilities. Here, we present observations of the magnetospheric composition in the Europa-Ganymede region of Jupiter's magnetosphere. We find material from Europa is intermittently present at comparable densities to Io-genic plasma. The intermittency of Europa-genic signatures suggests Europa's neutral oxygen toroidal cloud is more localized to Europa's vicinity than its hydrogen cloud. These observations reveal a more complex and compositionally diverse magnetosphere than previously thought.

Cross-flow separation characteristics and piloting of graphene oxide nanofiltration membrane sheets and tubes for kraft black liquor concentration

Dewatering of weak black liquor (WBL) in the kraft cycle by evaporation is highly energy intensive. Membranes are an attractive alternative for energy-efficient dewatering, but existing commercial polymeric or ceramic membranes are either degraded in BL or have high capital costs. Our recent works have demonstrated the engineering of graphene oxide (GO) nanofiltration membranes, their stability and promising performance in BL conditions, and preliminary scale-up into sheets and tubes. Here, we describe in detail the separation characteristics of GO membrane sheets and tubes under real BL conditions and crossflow operation. Recycle-mode piloting of a GO tubular membrane showed average “production flux” of 16 L/m2/h (LMH) and high rejections of lignin (98.3%), total solids (66%), and total organic carbon (83%), with no signs of irreversible fouling identified. A corresponding GO sheet membrane produced an average flux of ~25 LMH and maintained high lignin rejection of ~97% during a slipstream pilot at a kraft mill site using WBL with ~16 wt% total solids (TS). Finally, we piloted a Dow/DuPont XUS1808 polyamide composite reverse osmosis (RO) membrane for last-mile processing of the GO nanofiltration membrane permeate. The RO membrane showed a steady state flux of 19 LMH at 65 bar and produced ~0.02 wt% TS water product, which is highly suitable for reuse in pulp washing operations in the kraft process. The results have strong positive implications for the industrial application of GO membranes in BL concentration and other related applications.

Current Sheet Alignment in Oblique Black Hole Magnetospheres: A Black Hole Pulsar?

Abstract We study the magnetospheric evolution of a nonaccreting spinning black hole (BH) with an initially inclined split monopole magnetic field by means of 3D general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations. This serves as a model for a neutron star (NS) collapse or a BH–NS merger remnant after the inherited magnetosphere has settled into a split monopole field creating a striped wind. We show that the initially inclined split monopolar current sheet aligns over time with the BH equatorial plane. The inclination angle evolves exponentially toward alignment, with an alignment timescale that is inversely proportional to the square of the BH angular velocity, where higher spin results in faster alignment. Furthermore, magnetic reconnection in the current sheet leads to exponential decay of event-horizon-penetrating magnetic flux with nearly the same timescale for all considered BH spins. In addition, we present relations for the BH mass and spin in terms of the period and alignment timescale of the striped wind. The explored scenario of a rotating, aligning, and reconnecting current sheet can potentially lead to multimessenger electromagnetic counterparts to a gravitational-wave event due to the acceleration of particles powering high-energy radiation, plasmoid mergers resulting in coherent radio signals, and pulsating emission due to the initial misalignment of the BH magnetosphere.

Methods of making and inspecting a web of vitreous lithium sulfide separator sheet and lithium electrode assemblies

A lithium ion-conductive solid electrolyte including a freestanding inorganic vitreous sheet of sulfide-based lithium ion conducting glass is capable of high performance in a lithium metal battery by providing a high degree of lithium ion conductivity while being highly resistant to the initiation and/or propagation of lithium dendrites. Such an electrolyte is also itself manufacturable, and readily adaptable for battery cell and cell component manufacture, in a cost-effective, scalable manner. An automated machine based system, apparatus and methods assessing and inspecting the quality of such vitreous solid electrolyte sheets, electrode sub-assemblies and lithium electrode assemblies can be based on spectrophotometry and can be performed inline with fabricating the sheet or web (e.g., inline with drawing of the vitreous Li ion conducting glass) and/or with the manufacturing of associated electrode sub-assemblies and lithium electrode assemblies and battery cells.

RidgeAlloy: A high pressure die casting alloy that captures the approaching wave of automotive body sheet scrap

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has recently launched an effort to economically expand the North American aluminum supply chain by designing and developing a new family of Al-Mg-Si-Fe-Mn structural die cast aluminum alloys that can be made from up to 100% mixed 5xxx and 6xxx series automotive post-consumer sheet scrap and do not require heat treatment. The goal is to develop an alloy capable of capturing the approaching scrap wave of aluminum sheet intensive vehicles (in the 2030’s) into integrated structural high pressure die castings, rather than down-cycling these high-grade sheet alloys into non-structural castings. ORNL discovered a significant gap in the commercial thermodynamic databases that were unable to predict the trends of a key primary intermetallic phase as a function of composition. Experiments were performed to correct this gap and to create a unique, corrected quaternary database for Al-Mg-Si-Fe. High throughput computational methods, including solidification simulations, were used to identify a composition volume capable of avoiding this embrittling primary intermetallic phase, even at higher Fe + Si contents. Laboratory scale castings validated the thermodynamic and solidification predictions and resulted in lab-cast alloys with little primary intermetallic, and which met or exceeded structural casting properties requirements for yield strength and ductility. An accelerated demonstration of an HPDC automotive part was conducted in collaboration with two U.S. small businesses. Ingots made from 100% recycled 5xxx and 6xxx series scrap (plus Fe) were used to die cast one variant of this new family of Al-Mg-Si-Fe-Mn alloys (with high Si + Fe content) into a mid-sized HPDC structural-type automotive component. The HPDC alloy demonstration part showed good properties (especially ductility) and good castability for a complex component.

Round-robin weathering test of various polymeric back-sheets for PV modules with different ultraviolet irradiation and sample temperatures

Durability assessment of materials exposed to natural weathering with expected service lifetimes of more than 20 years requires accelerated testing of the UV stability, especially for polymeric materials. Fraunhofer ISE organized an interlaboratory comparison for testing different back-sheets in various test laboratories using different UV sources. The five participating test laboratories used three different types of UV sources. The interaction of the UV radiation with the polymers used in PV modules is main subject of this round-robin. Laminates were produced by using solar glass and a suitable EVA encapsulant combined with 10 different back-sheets. The simultaneous usage of different optical filters allowed to investigate roughly the spectral sensitivity and the intensity impact. The degradation was followed by spectral reflectance and transmittance measurements and calculation of the yellowness index as degradation indicator. Clear differences in the degradation behavior of the different products were found.

Self-supported MoO 2 /MoS 2 nano-sheets embedded in a carbon cloth as a binder-free substrate for high-energy lithium–sulfur batteries

As one of the most prospective candidates for next-generation rechargeable batteries, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries currently still encounter great challenges associated with the low conductivity, severe shuttle effects, and sluggish redox kinetics. Herein, a self-supported sulfur host is fabricated by an in-situ growth of MoO 2 /MoS 2 nano-sheets on a carbon cloth (CC). First, carbon cloth serves as a good template for the morphology-controlled synthesis of nanostructured materials, which not only alleviates the agglomeration of MoO2/MoS2, but also enhances the flexibility and mechanical strengthen of the hybrid architecture as a free-standing host. Second, the polysulfide-trapping ability can be greatly enhanced by both physical and chemical adsorption from the MoO 2 /MoS 2 -anchored carbon cloth. Moreover, the partially sulfurized MoO 2 /MoS 2 nano-sheets integrate the benefits of conductive MoO 2 and sulfiphilic MoS 2 , thus facilitating fast charge transfer and redox kinetics of polysulfide conversion. As a result, these attributes enable the host to hold a high sulfur loading (up to 7.6 mg cm -2 ), which exceeds most of the reported carbon cloth-related cathode work in the literature. Furthermore, the Li-S cells can achieve a high peak capacity of 1350 mA h g -1 , excellent rate capability (C/20 - 2C rate), impressive areal capacity (up to 6.3 mA h cm -2 ), and a high capacity retention of 85% after 100 cycles.

Experimental studies on the effects of sheet resistance and wettability of catalyst layer on electro-catalytic activities for oxygen evolution reaction in proton exchange membrane electrolysis cells

As the most important part of electrochemical reaction in proton exchange membrane electrolysis cells (PEMECs) for water splitting, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) occurs at the anode catalyst layer (CL). The distribution of the OER site is affected by many factors, such as properties of CL, operation parameters, procedures, etc. To study the effects of properties of CLs on the distribution of OER site on the CL, and consequently affect the performance of PEMECs, CLs with different sheet resistances are tested under different operation conditions. Furthermore, the phenomena of OER on CLs are captured by a high-speed and micro-scale visualization system in-situ and analysed coupled with electrochemical results. The results in this work show that both sheet resistance and wettability of CLs have significant impact on the distribution of the OER site, which can help optimize the design of membrane electrode assembly and improve the operating parameters for electrochemical devices.

Deterministic chaos in the self-assembly of β sheet nanotubes from an amphipathic oligopeptide

The self-assembly of designed peptides into filaments and other higher-order structures has been the focus of intense interest because of the potential for creating new biomaterials and biomedical devices. These peptide assemblies have also been used as models for understanding biological processes, such as the pathological formation of amyloid. Here we investigate the assembly of an octapeptide sequence, Ac-FKFEFKFE-NH2, motivated by prior studies that demonstrated that this amphipathic beta strand peptide self-assembled into fibrils and biocompatible hydrogels. Using high-resolution cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM), we are able to determine the atomic structure for two different coexisting forms of the fibrils, containing four and five beta sandwich protofilaments, respectively. Surprisingly, the inner walls in both forms are parallel beta sheets, while the outer walls are antiparallel beta sheets. Our results demonstrate the chaotic nature of peptide self-assembly and illustrate the importance of cryo-EM structural analysis to understand the complex phase behavior of these materials at near-atomic resolution.

Single-Objective Airy Light-Sheet Imaging

Despite its massive potential, standard light-sheet imaging (LSI) faces key challenges, such as the incompatibility with common sample mounting techniques and low-resolution imaging. Single-objective LSI attempts to address these issues but often suffers from limited fields-of-view and throughput rates, or requires multiple optics that increase costs, alignment complexity, and losses. To overcome these challenges of standard single-objective LSI, we introduce single-objective Airy light-sheet imaging (SoALSI). SoALSI leverages the extraordinary self-acceleration properties of the Airy beam, achieving 5× higher imaging rates and enhanced imaging efficiency than standard single-objective LSI. Here, we demonstrate SoALSI’s versatility through rigorous contrast and resolution characterizations and by high-resolution imaging of diverse biological specimens, including malaria parasite-infected red blood cells and plant root tissue. SoALSI seamlessly integrates with any standard inverted microscope frame, enabling broader accessibility for the bioimaging community to explore biological processes in a wide range of specimens with enhanced resolution and imaging contrast.

Rapid Viscoelastic Deformation Slows Marine Ice Sheet Instability at Pine Island Glacier

The ice sheets of the Amundsen Sea Embayment (ASE) are vulnerable to the marine ice sheet instability (MISI), which could cause irreversible collapse and raise sea levels by over a meter. The uncertain timing and scale of this collapse depend on the complex interaction between ice, ocean, and bedrock dynamics. The mantle beneath the ASE is likely less viscous (~10 18 Pa s) than the Earth's average mantle (~10 21 Pa s). In this paper we show that an effective equilibrium between Pine Island Glacier's retreat and the response of a weak viscoelastic mantle can reduce ice mass lost by almost 30% over 150 years. Other components of solid Earth response—purely elastic deformations and geoid perturbations—provide less stability than the viscoelastic response alone. Uncertainties in mantle rheology, topography, and basal melt affect how much stability we expect, if any. Our study indicates the importance of considering viscoelastic uplift during the rapid retreat associated with MISI.
