Design and Construction of a Superconducting “Direct Wind” R&D Magnet for the EIC Interaction Region

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was chosen to host the international Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), which will collide high energy and highly polarized hadron and electron beams with a center of mass energy up to 140 GeV. The Interaction Region (IR) [1] requires several large aperture, relatively high field superconducting dipole and quadrupole magnets, some of which are very closely spaced.\r\nA value engineering effort is underway as part of the EIC Project to construct and test a Direct Wind magnet [2] (coil comprised of NbTi conductor deposited directly onto a support tube, in this instance tapered, and secured mechanically against Lorentz forces afterwards) to replace two Rutherford cable collared magnets. This magnet exceeds the combination of aperture, number of coil \r\nlayers, and magnetic field, as compared to existing accelerator and R&D Direct Wind magnets to date. Furthermore, construction has been completed using a newly commissioned winding machine, upgraded in anticipation of the upcoming EIC production coil fabrication. Design, analysis, construction issues, lessons learned and accomplishments to date shall be discussed, including the \r\nachieved corrections to multipoles made to successive coil layers based on warm magnetic measurements of preceding layers.

RF Harmonic Kicker R&D Demonstration and Its Application to the RCS Injection of the EIC

The Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is an accelerating component of the electron injection complex, which provides polarized electrons in electron-ion collisions in the main Electron Storage Ring (ESR). We present the injection scheme into the RCS based on an ultra-fast harmonic kicker, whose "five odd-harmonic modes" prototype was developed in the context of the Jefferson Lab EIC (JLEIC) conceptual design. In its early stage of R&D, the sharp (~3 ns width) waveform construction, beam dynamics, and pulsed power operation with short ramping time (~10 us) will be discussed together with the fabrication work of the JLEIC prototype.

Crystalline Disposal R&D at LBNL: FY20 Progress Report

Within the Spent Fuel & Waste Science and Technology (SFWST) Program, research work continues further with the goal to better understand long-term performance of disposal systems in three main geologic rock types: clay/shale, salt, and crystalline rock. This report documents LBNL’s research activities related to investigations of crystalline host rock according to the scope of two work packages: SF-20LB01030207 “Crystalline International Collaborations – LBNL,” and SF-20LB01030203 “Crystalline Disposal R&D – LBNL.” These research activities correspond are related to key Features, Events, and Processes (FEPs), ranked in importance from medium to high, as listed in Table 7 of the Used Fuel Disposition Campaign Disposal Research and Development Roadmap (FCR&D-USED-2011-000065 REV0) (Nutt, 2011). Specifically, these research activities address FEP 2.2.01, Excavation Disturbed Zone (EZD). The results of these research activities provide important insights into understanding and predicting flow and transport processes that could occur in low-permeability crystalline rocks, in which fractures might serve as main conduits for fluid flow and radionuclide transport. The evolution of the EDZ during the excavation of the tunnel as well as the evolution of microcrack growth within the EDZ after the emplacement of backfill are critical for predicting the long- term behavior of the EDZ. A number of factors including stress, temperature, water activity, capillary pressure, chemistry, and mineralogy can affect the rock evolution, which require advanced experimental tools to study it.

How to Create, and Sustain, R&D Leadership A blueprint for international collaboration

How the United States can compete in the twenty-first century is one of the most vexing challenges for policy makers and academics today. Many studies have shown that most impactful science and technology advances happen in open and diverse environments, under excellent research conditions, with sufficient funding. Since the end of World War II, the United States has been the most attractive country for open research and commercialization of new discoveries. This strategy—partly articulated in science administrator Vannevar Bush’s Endless Frontier report of 1945—leverages federal government investments in research and development (R&D) to enhance economic competitiveness and national security. The combination of a dynamic, open research ecosystem and world-leading science infrastructure provided an exciting work environment leading to groundbreaking discoveries, and propelled economic growth through the second half of the twentieth century.
