Crystal-field Hamiltonian and anisotropy in KErSe 2 and CsErSe 2

We use neutron scattering and bulk property measurements to determine the single-ion crystal-field Hamiltonians of delafossites KErSe 2 and CsErSe 2 . These two systems contain planar equilateral triangular Er lattices arranged in two stacking variants: rhombohedral (for K) or hexagonal (Cs). Our analysis shows that regardless of the stacking order both compounds exhibit an easy-plane ground-state doublet with large J z =1/2 terms and the potential for significant quantum effects, making them candidates for quantum-spin-liquid or other exotic ground states.

Fractionalized Excitations Revealed by Entanglement Entropy

Fractionalized excitations develop in many unusual many-body states such as quantum spin liquids, disordered phases that cannot be described using any local order parameter. Also, because these exotic excitations correspond to emergent degrees of freedom, how to probe them and establish their existence is a long-standing challenge. We present a general procedure to reveal the fractionalized excitations using real-space entanglement entropy in critical spin liquids that are particularly relevant to experiments. Furthermore, we show how to use the entanglement entropy to construct the corresponding spinon Fermi surface. Our work defines a new pathway to establish and characterize exotic excitations in novel quantum phases of matter.

Disorder-Enriched Magnetic Excitations in a Heisenberg-Kitaev Quantum Magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6

Using optical magnetospectroscopy, we investigate the magnetic excitations of Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 in a broad magnetic field range (0 T ≤ B ≤ 17.5 T) at low temperature. Our measurements reveal rich spectra of in-plane magnetic excitations with a surprisingly large number of modes, even in the high-field spin-polarized state. Theoretical calculations find that the Na-occupation disorder in Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 plays a crucial role in generating these modes. Our Letter demonstrates the necessity to consider disorder in the spin environment in the search for Kitaev quantum spin liquid states in practicable materials.

Inverse Faraday effect in Mott insulators

The inverse Faraday effect (IFE), where a static magnetization is induced by circularly polarized light, offers a promising route to ultrafast control of spin states. Here we study the IFE in Mott insulators using the Floquet theory. We find two distinct IFE behavior governed by the inversion symmetry. In the Mott insulators with inversion symmetry, we find that the effective magnetic field induced by the IFE couples ferromagnetically to the neighboring spins. While for the Mott insulators without inversion symmetry, the effective magnetic field due to IFE couples antiferromagnetically to the neighboring spins. We apply the theory to the spin-orbit coupled single- and multiorbital Hubbard model that is relevant for the Kitaev quantum spin liquid material and demonstrate that the magnetic interactions can be tuned by light.

Gapless spinons and a field-induced soliton gap in the hyperhoneycomb Cu oxalate framework compound [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3

Here, we report a detailed study of the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of a spin-liquid candidate: the hyperhoneycomb Cu oxalate framework compound [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 . The specific heat shows no anomaly associated with a magnetic transition at low temperatures down to T ~ 180 mK in zero magnetic field. We observe a large linear-in-T contribution to the specific heat γT, γ = 98 (1) mJ / mol K 2 , at low temperatures, indicative of the presence of fermionic excitations despite the Mott insulating state. The low-T specific heat is strongly suppressed by applied magnetic fields H, which induce an energy gap, Δ(H), in the spin-excitation spectrum. We use the four-component relativistic density-functional theory (DFT) to calculate the magnetic interactions, including the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antisymmetric exchange, which causes an effective staggered field acting on one copper sublattice. The magnitude and field dependence of the field-induced gap, Δ (H) ∝ H 2/3 , are accurately predicted by the soliton mass calculated from the sine-Gordon model of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with all parameters determined by our DFT calculations. Thus our experiment and calculations are entirely consistent with a model of [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 in which anisotropic magnetic exchange interactions due to Jahn-Teller distortion cause one copper sublattice to dimerize, leaving a second sublattice of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic chains. We also show that this model quantitatively accounts for the measured temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility. Thus [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 is a canonical example of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and not a resonating-valence-bond quantum spin liquid, as previously proposed.

Emergence of Spinons in Layered Trimer Iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10

Spinons are well-known as the elementary excitations of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains, but means to realize spinons in higher dimensions is the subject of intense research. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to study the layered trimer iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 , which shows no magnetic order down to 0.2 K. An emergent one-dimensional spinon continuum is observed that can be well-described by XXZ spin-1/2 chains with magnetic exchange of ~55 meV and a small Ising-like anisotropy. With 2% isovalent Sr doping, magnetic order appears below TN=130 K along with sharper excitations, indicating that the spinons become more confined in (Ba 1-x Sr x ) 4 Ir 3 O 10 . We propose that the frustrated intra-trimer interactions effectively reduce the system into decoupled spin chains, the subtle balance of which can be easily tipped by perturbations such as chemical doping. Our results put Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 between the one-dimensional chain and two-dimensional quantum spin liquid scenarios, illustrating a new way to suppress magnetic order and realize fractional spinons.

Angular‐Momentum Transfer Mediated by a Vibronic‐Bound‐State

Abstract The notion that phonons can carry pseudo‐angular momentum has many major consequences, including topologically protected phonon chirality, Berry curvature of phonon band structure, and the phonon Hall effect. When a phonon is resonantly coupled to an orbital state split by its crystal field environment, a so‐called vibronic bound state forms. Here, a vibronic bound state is observed in NaYbSe 2 , a quantum spin liquid candidate. In addition, field and polarization dependent Raman microscopy is used to probe an angular momentum transfer of Δ J z = ±ℏ between phonons and the crystalline electric field mediated by the vibronic bound stat. This angular momentum transfer between electronic and lattice subsystems provides new pathways for selective optical addressability of phononic angular momentum via electronic ancillary states.

Kondo enabled transmutation between spinons and superconducting vortices: Origin of magnetic memory in 4 H b − TaS 2

Recent experiments [Persky , ] demonstrate a magnetic memory effect in 4 H b − TaS 2 above its superconducting transition temperature, where Abriokosov vortices are spontaneously generated by lowering the temperature at zero magnetic field after field training the normal state. Motivated by the experiment, we propose the chiral quantum spin liquid (QSL) stabilized in the constituent layers of 4 H b − TaS 2 as a mechanism. We model 4 H b − TaS 2 as coupled layers of the chiral QSL and the superconductor. Through the Kondo coupling between the localized moments and conduction electrons, there is mutual transmutation between spinons and vortices during the thermal-cycling process, which yields the magnetic memory effect observed in experiments. We also propose a mechanism to stabilize chiral and nematic superconductivity in 4 H b − TaS 2 through the Kondo coupling of conduction electrons to the chiral QSL. Our picture suggests 4 H b − TaS 2 as an exciting platform to explore the interplay between QSL and superconductivity through the Kondo effect. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

$μ$ $\mathrm{SR}$ study of the dipole-octupole quantum spin ice candidate $\mathrm{Ce_2Zr_2O_7}$

The Ce 3+ pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom in Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 possess both dipolar and octupolar character which enables the possibility of novel quantum spin liquid ground states in this material. In this study, we report muon spin relaxation and rotation (μSR) measurements on single-crystal samples of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 in zero magnetic field and in magnetic fields directed along the [1, $\overline{1}$, 0] and [1, 1, 1] crystallographic directions, and for magnetic fields directed both longitudinal and transverse to the direction of muon polarization. Our zero-field results show no signs of magnetic ordering or spin freezing, consistent with earlier zero-field μSR measurements on a powder sample of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 , and also with the expectations for a quantum spin ice. However, we measure a more gentle relaxation rate for Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 in zero field at low temperatures than was previously reported. This difference in relaxation rate is likely due to the low oxidation and, correspondingly, the high stoichiometry of our singlecrystal samples. Longitudinal field measurements confirm that the magnetic dipole moments in Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 remain dynamic at T = 0.1 K on the microsecond timescale. For both [1, $\overline{1}$, 0] and [1, 1, 1] magnetic fields, our μSR Knight shift measurements show a field-induced leveling off of the magnetic susceptibility at low temperature which is qualitatively consistent with corresponding calculations using the numerical-linked-cluster method in combination with recent estimates for the nearest-neighbor exchange parameters of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 .

Review of honeycomb-based Kitaev materials with zigzag magnetic ordering

The search for a Kitaev quantum spin liquid in crystalline magnetic materials has fueled intense interest in the two-dimensional honeycomb systems. Many promising candidate Kitaev systems are characterized by a long-range-ordered magnetic structure with an antiferromagnetic zigzag-type order, where the static moments form alternating ferromagnetic chains. Recent experiments on high-quality single crystals uncovered the existence of intriguing multi-k magnetic structures, which evolved from zigzag structures. Those discoveries have sparked new theoretical developments and amplified interest in these materials. We present an overview of the honeycomb materials known to display this type of magnetic structure and provide detailed crystallographic information for the possible single- and multi-k variants.

Polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy of α – RuCl 3 and evidence of room-temperature two-dimensional magnetic scattering

Polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy was performed and analyzed from large, high-quality, monodomain single crystal of α–RuCl 3 , a proximate Kitaev quantum spin liquid. Spectra were collected with laser polarizations parallel and perpendicular to the honeycomb plane. Pairs of nearly degenerate phonons were discovered and show either a fourfold or twofold polarization angle dependence in their Raman intensity, thereby providing evidence to definitively assign the bulk crystal point group as C 2h . The low-frequency continuum that is often attributed to scattering from pairs of Majorana fermions was also examined and found to disappear when the laser excitation and scattered photon polarizations were perpendicular to the honeycomb plane. This disappearance, along with the behavior of the phonon spectrum in the same polarization configuration, strongly suggests that the scattering continuum is two-dimensional. Here, we argue that this scattering continuum originates from the Kitaev magnetic interactions that survives up to room temperature, a scale larger than the bare Kitaev exchange energy of approximately 50 K.

Unconventional magnetic oscillations in a kagome Mott insulator

In metals, electrons in a magnetic field undergo cyclotron motion, leading to oscillations in physical properties called quantum oscillations. This phenomenon has never been seen in a robust insulator because there are no mobile electrons. We report an exception to this rule. We study a Mott insulator on a kagome lattice which does not order magnetically down to milli-Kelvin temperatures despite antiferromagnetic interactions. We observe a plateau at magnetization equal to $\frac{1}{9}$ Bohr magneton per magnetic ion, accompanied by oscillations in the magnetic torque, reminiscent of quantum oscillations in metals. The temperature dependence obeys Fermi distribution. These phenomena are consistent with a quantum spin liquid state whose excitations are fermionic spinons with a Dirac-like spectrum coupled to an emergent gauge field.

Complex pressure-temperature structural phase diagram of the honeycomb iridate Cu 2 IrO 3

Cu 2 IrO 3 is among the newest layered honeycomb iridates and a promising candidate to harbor a Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. Here, we investigate the pressure and temperature dependence of its structure through a combination of powder x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption fine structure measurements, as well as ab initio evolutionary structure search. At ambient pressure, we revise the previously proposed C2/c solution with a related but notably more stable P2 1 /c structure. Pressures below 8 GPa drive the formation of Ir-Ir dimers at both ambient and low temperatures, similar to the case of Li 2 IrO 3 . At higher pressures, the structural evolution dramatically depends on temperature. Furthermore, a large discontinuous reduction of the Ir honeycomb interplanar distance is observed around 15 GPa at room temperature, likely driven by a collapse of the O-Cu-O dumbbell bonds. At 15 K, pressures beyond 20 GPa first lead to an intermediate phase featuring a continuous reduction of the interplanar distance, which then collapses at 30 GPa across yet another phase transition. However, the resulting structure around 40 GPa is not the same at room and low temperatures. Remarkably, the reduction in interplanar distance leads to an apparent healing of the stacking faults at room temperature, but not at 15 K. Possible implications on the evolution of electronic structure of Cu 2 IrO 3 with pressure are discussed.

Disorder-induced excitation continuum in a spin- 1 2 cobaltate on a triangular lattice

A spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet is a prototypical frustrated quantum magnet, which exhibits remarkable quantum many-body effects that arise from the synergy between geometric spin frustration and quantum fluctuations. It can host quantum frustrated magnetic topological phenomena such as quantum spin liquid (QSL) states, highlighted by the presence of fractionalized quasiparticles within a continuum of magnetic excitations. Here, in this work, we use neutron scattering to study CoZnMo 3 O 8 , which has a triangular lattice of J eff = 1/2 Co 2+ ions with octahedral coordination. We found a wave-vector-dependent excitation continuum at low energy that disappears with increasing temperature. Although these excitations are reminiscent of a spin excitation continuum in a QSL state, their presence in CoZnMo 3 O 8 originates from magnetic intersite disorder-induced dynamic spin states with peculiar excitations. Our results, therefore, provide direct experimental evidence for the presence of a disorder-induced spin excitation continuum.

Field-induced intermediate ordered phase and anisotropic interlayer interactions in α-RuCl 3

In α-RuCl 3 , an external magnetic field applied within the honeycomb plane can induce a transition from a magnetically ordered state to a disordered state that is potentially related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. In zero field, single crystals with minimal stacking faults display a low-temperature state with in-plane zigzag antiferromagnetic order and a three-layer periodicity in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. In this work, we present angle-dependent magnetization, ac susceptibility, and thermal transport data that demonstrate the presence of an additional intermediate-field ordered state at fields below the transition to the disordered phase. Neutron-diffraction results show that the magnetic structure in this phase is characterized by a six-layer periodicity in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. Theoretically, the intermediate ordered phase can be accounted for by including spin-anisotropic couplings between the layers in a three-dimensional spin model. Together, this demonstrates the importance of interlayer exchange interactions in α-RuCl 3 .

Out-of-plane magnetic phase diagram of the Kitaev quantum magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

We have investigated the magnetic properties and mapped out the phase diagram of the honeycomb magnet Na 2⁢ Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 with Co 3d 7 in out-of-plane magnetic fields. This material has previously been proposed to show nearest-neighbor Kitaev interactions between Co spins and maybe even Kitaev quantum spin liquid behavior in high fields. At 0.01 T, we observe a thermal phase transition at T N = 27K, transitioning from a paramagnetic state to a canonical ferrimagnetic state. Upon increasing the magnetic field, a spin-floplike phase transition occurred before saturation of J = 1/2 between 10 K and T N . Below 10 K, a peak-dip-peak structure emerges between 10 and 17 T in the magnetic susceptibility (d⁢M/⁢dH) before the magnetic saturation, reminiscent of magnetization plateau behavior. The measurement of the magnetocaloric effect also shows dip-peak-dip behavior in this field range. Our data can be explained by an XXZ model with a single ion anisotropy and possibly small Kitaev and Γ exchange interactions. Finally, we also determined the magnetization saturation field that helps constrain the energy scale of the exchange interactions.

Resolution of zigzag magnetic correlations in Na-deficient Na x IrO 3 without long-range ordering

The materials search for Kitaev quantum spin liquids led to the discovery of many honeycomb lattice materials. Much attention has been paid to materials without magnetic order down to the lowest temperatures. The newly synthesized Na-deficient Na x IrO 3 has been found to bear no sign of long-range magnetic order above 1 K from physical property measurements. In this paper, we report momentum-and energy-resolved excitation spectra in Na-deficient Na x IrO 3 measured using a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectrometer. Orbital excitation spectra show that the octahedral and trigonal crystal field splittings are larger in Na x IrO 3 than in Na 2 IrO 3 . On the other hand, the low-energy spectrum at low temperature shows a wave-vector dispersion and a spectral weight distribution that are similar to those of Na 2 IrO 3 , revealing that the two-dimensional zigzag magnetic correlations in Na x IrO 3 are similar to those in Na 2 IrO 3 in terms of the ordered magnetic moment direction and three dynamically fluctuating zigzag orders. The azimuth angle dependence of the low-energy spectrum corroborates these results. The two-dimensional zigzag magnetic correlations rapidly weaken until 50 K. At high temperatures, the spectral weight distribution of the low-energy excitation resembles that of the pure Kitaev model, indicating that the Kitaev interaction dominates the dynamic magnetic response at high temperature. Here we suggest that the larger crystal field and distortion and the weakened longer-range Heisenberg exchange interactions due to the Na deficiency in Na x IrO 3 contribute to bring Na x IrO 3 away from the zigzag long-range magnetic order phase.

Thermodynamics of the dipole-octupole pyrochlore magnet Ce 2 Hf 2 O 7 in applied magnetic fields

The recently discovered dipole-octupole pyrochlore magnet Ce 2 Hf 2 O 7 is a promising three-dimensional quantum spin liquid candidate which shows no signs of ordering at low temperature. Here we investigate the thermodynamic response to magnetic fields applied along the global [110] direction using specific heat measurements and fits using numerical methods, and solve the corresponding magnetic structure using neutron diffraction. Specific heat data in moderate fields are reproduced well, however, at high fields the agreement is not satisfactory. We especially observe a two-step release of entropy, a finding that demands a review of both theory and experiment. We address it within the framework of three possible scenarios, including an analysis of the crystal field Hamiltonian not restricted to the two-dimensional single-ion doublet subspace. We conclusively rule out two of these scenarios and find qualitative agreement with a simple model of field misalignment with respect to the crystalline direction. As a result, we discuss the implications of our findings for [111] applied fields and for future experiments on Ce 2 Hf 2 O 7 and its sister compounds.
