Temperature dependence of the Na-23 quadrupole coupling constants in Rochelle salt.

The Na-23 nuclear quadrupole coupling constant in Rochelle salt is found to have a linear dependence on temperature which extends through both the higher- and lower-temperature nonferroelectric phases. This result necessitates a reinterpretation of some earlier data, but is in perfect agreement with the recent calculations of Zeks, Shulka, and Blinc.

Combined Quadrupole-dipole Model for Inlet Flow Distortion Noise from a Subsonic Fan

A combined quadrupole-dipole model has been developed for the noise generated by inlet flow distortion in a subsonic fan. A formula is derived for the total upstream-radiated acoustic power in each tone as a function of the design parameters of the fan and the properties of the inlet flow distortion. Numerical results are obtained for values of the parameters corresponding to various quiet fans. The analysis is compared with noise measurements taken on a 51-cm (20-in.) diameter research fan as well as with those taken on a number of full-scale fan stages. Fairly good agreement was obtained. It should therefore be possible to use this model to study the noise-reduction potential of the various fan design parameters.

A remote operation quadrupole mass spectrometer using a custom radio-frequency link approach

A commercial quadrupole mass spectrometer (residual gas analyzer, RGA) system has been modified to operate at large separations of its electronics console and sensing head. The methods implemented have made practical applications, as well as operation, of such a system possible for the first time. This advance was stimulated by a need for placing sensors at remote (45 or 60 m) chamber locations for space simulation testing of orbital flight spacecraft. Emphasis is placed on instrument functional requirements and describing the hardware changes and adjustment techniques necessary to assure operation at the extended cable lengths.

Dipole and quadrupole integrals for the C I, N I, and O I sequences

The Coulomb approximation tables of Oertel and Shomo, together with binding-energy values obtained by a screening approximation, have been used to produce values of the dipole and quadrupole radial integrals needed in obtaining transition probabilities for ions of six, seven, and eight electrons. Some comparisons with more rigorously calculated values show that the present values are quite accurate, especially for ions of higher atomic number.

Neptune - Observations of the H2 quadrupole lines in the /4-0/ band

The first measurement of Neptune's quadrupole H2 lines is reported. The equivalent widths of the S(0) and S(1) lines of the (4-0) band are given along with the corresponding widths measured from comparison spectra of Uranus taken on the same nights. These are interpreted in terms of both an inhomogeneous atmosphere overlying a reflecting layer and a homogeneous, semi-infinite, scattering atmosphere. Only the scattering model proves to be consistent with Neptune's spectrum in this wavelength region. The H2 abundance along the scattering mean free path is found to be less than the value for Rayleigh scattering in pure H2. This result is interpreted in terms of the presence of H2, CH4, and at least one other gas, instead of the more conventional interpretation in terms of the presence of an aerosol mixed with H2. Weak features in the continuum were observed. Their widths and the strength of the H2 features indicate that H2 is more abundant than the sum of the remaining gases in these atmospheres.

Investigation of a quadrupole ultra-high vacuum ion pump

The new nonmagnetic ion pump resembles the quadrupole ionization gage. The dimensions are larger, and hyperbolically shaped electrodes replace the four rods. Their surfaces follow y sq. = 36 + x sq. (x, y in centimeters). The electrodes, 55 cm long, are positioned lengthwise in a tube. At one end a cathode emits electrons; at the other end a narrowly wound flat spiral of tungsten clad with titanium on cathode potential can be heated for titanium evaporation. Electrons accelerated by a dc potential of the surface electrodes oscillate between the ends on rotational trajectories, if a high frequency potential superimposed on the dc potential is properly adjusted. Pumping speeds (4-100 liter/sec) for different gases at different peak voltages (1000-3000V) at corresponding frequencies (57-100 MHz), and at different pressures 0.00001 to the minus 9 power Torr were observed. The lowest pressure reached was below 10 to the minus 10 power Torr.

The importance of determining the solar quadrupole moment

Current theoretical modelling of the sun is in difficulty. Additional observations must be made to place constraints on the plethora of conjectures that have been advanced to explain the low neutrino flux and to guide solar model builders in their search to understand the deep interior of the sun. A determination of the magnitude of the solar quadrupole moment, is one such constraint; it places limits on the density, angular velocity and magnetic field distributions inside the sun.

Reflection and radiation due to a quadrupole near a fluid interface

The reflection of sound at an interface between two fluid half-space in relative motion (one in motion and the other at rest), but with different density and different sound speed, is considered. The reflection coefficient is found in an explicitly closed form. A brief discussion of the effect of mean velocity, i.e., corresponding Mach number on different noise generating quadrupole directivities concludes the presentation of the paper. The graphs provided illustrate this aspect in a rather more convincing way.

Theoretical brightness temperature profiles of atmospheric pure H2 rotational quadrupole lines - Jupiter and Uranus

With the advent of high-resolution instruments and their use high above most of the telluric water vapor, the hydrogen pure rotational quadrupole lines at 28, 17, and 12 microns from the atmospheres of the outer planets may be observed. Best values for the line strengths, pressure-broadening coefficients, diffusion constants, and pressure shifts for these rotational transitions are calculated. The collisionally narrowed Galatry profile is used to calculate brightness temperature line profiles for these H2 transitions for the outer planets, Jupiter and Uranus. The effects of the H2 rotational-translational continuum and of the NH3 v2 band are also included.

Analysis of flight effects on noise radiation from jet flow using a convecting quadrupole model

The effects of flight on noise radiation from convecting quadrupoles in a jet flow are examined. The analysis shows that as flight velocity increases there is a steadily increasing amplification of the sound that is radiated into the forward arc and a large reduction of the sound that is radiated into the rearward arc. The analysis also shows the same trend when there is a reduction in the exhaust velocity with, however, a further rise in amplification in the forward quadrant and a drop in attenuation in the aft quadrant. Finally, it is concluded that there is a transmission effect tending to enhance the sound radiation by a density ratio pf/pj which increases with increasing jet temperature.

Nuclear quadrupole resonance studies project

The participation of undergraduates in nuclear quadrupole resonance research at Grambling University was made possible by NASA grants. Expanded laboratory capabilities include (1) facilities for high and low temperature generation and measurement; (2) facilities for radio frequency generation and measurement with the modern spectrum analyzers, precision frequency counters and standard signal generators; (3) vacuum and glass blowing facilities; and (4) miscellaneous electronic and machine shop facilities. Experiments carried out over a five year period are described and their results analyzed. Theoretical studies on solid state crystalline electrostatic fields, field gradients, and antishielding factors are included.

Dipole and quadrupole synthesis of electric potential fields

A general technique for expanding an unknown potential field in terms of a linear summation of weighted dipole or quadrupole fields is described. Computational methods were developed for the iterative addition of dipole fields. Various solution potentials were compared inside the boundary with a more precise calculation of the potential to derive optimal schemes for locating the singularities of the dipole fields. Then, the problem of determining solutions to Laplace's equation on an unbounded domain as constrained by pertinent electron trajectory data was considered.

The performance of primary Cs beam clocks using quadrupole and hexapole deflection systems. Consequences for time keeping

Since 1978 the time-and-frequency standard CS1 of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has operated continuously as a 'primary clock'. Its uncertainty (7.1 to the negative 15th power) is considerably smaller than that of the other existing primary standards. The CS1 is equipped with a combination of quadrupole and hexapole magnets and uses a longitudinal C-field. Consequences of utilizing primary clocks of this quality for the generation of the International Atomic Time Scale TAI are discussed.

Measurements of the H2 4-0 quadrupole bands of Uranus and Neptune

It is found that the equivalent widths of the lines of the 4-0 H2 quadrupole band on Uranus and Neptune are substantially smaller than the values found by some previous observers. An analysis of the results based on a range of atmospheric models yields H2 abundances of 240 + or - 60 km-amagats for Uranus and greater than approximately 200 km amagats for Neptune.

Gravitational radiation quadrupole formula is valid for gravitationally interacting systems

An argument is presented for the validity of the quadrupole formula for gravitational radiation energy loss in the far field of nearly Newtonian (e.g., binary stellar) systems. This argument differs from earlier ones in that it determines beforehand the formal accuracy of approximation required to describe gravitationally self-interacting systems, uses the corresponding approximate equation of motion explicitly, and evaluates the appropriate asymptotic quantities by matching along the correct space-time light cones.

Interference with negative particle sampling due to formation of positive ions in a quadrupole mass spectrometer

A quadrupole mass spectrometer has been utilized to study active discharges containing Cs vapor. Production of positive ions by electron impact within the mass spectrometer and subsequent secondary electron emission from cesiated surfaces produced spurious or pseudonegative ion signals which interfered with attempts to sample negative ions from the plasma. These effects may also occur in other gas discharge systems.

Quadrupole distortions of the heliospheric current sheet in 1976 and 1977

Latitudinal variations in the position of the heliospheric current sheet were investigated using interplanetary measurements from Helios A, Helios B, IMP 8, and white light corona measurements in the period May 1976 to May 1977. The latitude of the heliospheric current sheet between 0.3 AU and I AU is consistent with that of the maximum brightness curve of white light polarization brightness at 1.75 solar radii within approximately + or - 7 deg. The combined data sets show that the four-sector magnetic sector pattern observed in the ecliptic plane for most of this epoch could be attributed to a warped current sheet whose shape near the sun resembles a saddle surface that is nearly symmetrical about the equatorial plane. The latitudinal extent of the current sheet is on the average 8 deg and the maximum extent is 15 deg (except on one rotation, when it is 20 deg). These results can be interpreted as a consequence of the solar magnetic field, the dominant components of the field being due to a dipole nearly aligned with the sun's spin axis and a quadrupole component whose strength is about 17 percent of the dipole.

Desaturation of H2 quadrupole lines in the atmospheres of the outer planets

The vibrational dependence of self-broadening of molecular hydrogen lines results in a desaturation of quadrupole absorption lines long thought to be highly saturated in planetary atmospheres. This desaturation significantly alters H2 abundances in the atmospheres of Uranus and Neptune. Baseline models are presented to illustrate the effects of the revision of this fundamental H2 parameter.
