The Geochemistry and Microbial Ecology of Produced Waters from Three Different Unconventional Oil and Gas Regions

One of the most significant challenges associated with predicting reservoir fluid properties is accounting for the effect of microbial activity, which catalyzes chemical reactions that lead to corrosion and sulfide release during or after hydraulic fracturing operations. The current understanding of microbial populations living in hydraulic fracturing systems is based on a limited number of samples and well sites, necessitating additional research efforts to confirm preliminary findings and identify factors driving the microbial ecology. The project objective is to profile the geochemistry and microbiology of three different oil and gas basins to order increase the understanding of how microbial activity affects reservoir fluids.

RBDMS, FracFocus, State Support, and Produced Water Initiatives

Award DE-FE-0027702 from the Department of Energy to the Ground Water Protection Council (GWPC) focused on state and federal priorities in the areas of state Risk Based Data Management System (RBDMS) development, connectivity between state systems and FracFocus.org, and data sharing initiatives across agencies. The primary objective was to enhance the RBDMS by adding new components relevant to current environmental topics such as hydraulic fracturing, increasing field inspection capabilities, creating linkages between FracFocus and state programs, upgrading eForm capabilities, and analyzing potential for data sharing. The recipient worked with state agencies developing RBDMS module(s) that meet these needs.

Magnetic Nanoparticle Extraction of Lithium from Produced Waters - CRADA 483 (Final Report)

The demand for lithium in the energy production industry is expected to increase sharply, development of simple and cost-effective techniques for lithium production and recovery from various lithium sources is essential. In this project, core/shell magnetic nanoparticles were successfully designed to selectively extract lithium from aqueous lithium sources as an extension of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s magnetic nanofluid extraction technology. The core/shell magnetic nanoparticles are composed of manganese oxide-based lithium ion sieve shells, which allow selective lithium uptake from brines with multiple coexisting ions, over iron oxide cores, which can respond to external magnetic fields for effective recovery and reuse of adsorbents from a liquid. The synthesized lithium ion-sieves and core/shell magnetic nanoparticles were characterized using several techniques to reveal their crystallinity and morphology. The lithium uptake properties of the lithium ion-sieves and core/shell magnetic nanoparticles were evaluated in terms of lithium adsorption capacity, removal percentage, selectivity, and cycling performance in simulated and natural brines. Magnetic properties of the core/shell magnetic nanoparticles were tested by measuring magnetic saturation, and magnetic response of colloidal solutions containing the core/shell magnetic nanoparticles was tested with permanent magnets.

Treatment and Mineral Recovery from Combustion Residual Leachate and Produced Water

This talk presents the design of operationally flexible diafiltration membrane systems for Li/Co recovery, and applies robust optimization methodologies using these flexible systems to generate optimal designs immune to membrane manufacturing variability and uncertain process inlet conditions. The results highlight the use of robust optimization to find design strategies and insights that may reduce technical risks arising from model uncertainties.
