Direct determination of the temperatures of the Carbon targets at the CNI polarimeters in RHIC when hit by the proton beam

Up to now, the temperatures of the carbon fiber targets used in the RHIC CNI polarimeters during proton beam interactions cannot be directly measured, yet their survival indicates that they remain below the sublimation threshold of Tsub = 3915 K. This study investigates the feasibility of using light emission as a diagnostic tool to determine the target temperatures. A dedicated optical light collection system was implemented in IP12 to capture and analyze emitted light across the visible and near-infrared spectrum. This note focuses on the initial results from the RHIC run 24 and outlines the next steps for further investigation during run 25. A proposal for an APEX run [1] was submitted as an option in case a dedicated proton beam is not available during run 25. This work is critical for assessing the applicability of carbon fiber targets in the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) under increased beam currents.

Polarimeter provides transient response in nanosecond range

Conventional polarimeter with a Senarmont compensator improves transient response and eliminates manual manipulation. A sampled photomultiplier output is fed to a low pass filter, resulting in a signal representing the optical state existing at the instant of sampling. With this technique, an unknown transient-induced retardation can be measured.

A graphite crystal polarimeter for stellar X-ray astronomy.

The first crystal X-ray polarimeter to be used for X-ray astronomy is described. Polarization is measured by modulation of the X rays diffracted at an average 45 deg glancing angle from large, curved graphite crystal panels as these rotate about an axis parallel to the incident X-ray flux. Arrangement of the crystal panels, the design of the detector, and the signal-processing circuitry were optimized to minimize systematic effects produced by off-axis pointing of the rocket and cosmic ray induced events. The in-flight performance of the instrument in relation to the observed background signal is discussed.

Development of an infrared polarimeter

AEROPOL infrared polarimeter was built for measurements microns between 1.1 and 3.5 microns, with a 1.5 degree field of view, using a wire grid polarization analyzer. A PbS detector is cooled by condensed Freon-13. The instrument operates under minicomputer control, giving a polarization least squares solution each 2.5 seconds. AEROPOL was flown on the NASA CV-990 aircraft, in a remote-sensing study of terrestrial cloud particle sizes and shapes.

A tracking polarimeter for measuring solar and ionospheric Faraday rotation of signals from deep space probes

A tracking polarimeter implemented on the 64-m NASA/JPL paraboloid antenna at Goldstone, Calif., is described. Its performance is analyzed and compared with measurements. The system was developed to measure Faraday rotation in the solar corona of the telemetry carrier from the Pioneer VI spacecraft as it was occulted by the sun. It also measures rotation in the earth's ionosphere and is an accurate method of determining spacecraft orientation. The new feature of this system is its use of a pair of quarter-wave plates to allow the synthesis of a rotating feed system, while requiring the rotation of only a single section of waveguide. Since the polarization sensing is done at RF and the receiver operates essentially as a null detector, the system's accuracy is superior to other polarization tracking schemes. In addition, the antenna size and maser preamplifier provide unsurpassed sensitivity. The associated instrumentation used in the Pioneer VI experiment is also described.

Determination of optical parameters of atmospheric particulates from ground-based polarimeter measurements

This paper describes the theoretical analysis that is required to infer, from polarimeter measurements of skylight, the size distribution, refractive index and abundance of particulates in the atmosphere. To illustrate the viability of the method, some data obtained at UCLA is analyzed and the atmospheric parameters are derived. The explicit demonstration of the redundancy in the description of aerosol distributions suggests that radiation field measurements will not uniquely determine the modal radius of the size distribution. In spite of this nonuniqueness information useful to heat budget calculations can be derived.

The Skylab ten color photoelectric polarimeter

A 10-color photoelectric polarimeter was used during Skylab missions SL-2 and SL-3 to measure sky brightness and polarization associated with zodiacal light, background starlight, and the spacecraft corona. A description is given of the instrument and observing routines together with initial results on the spacecraft corona and polarization of the zodiacal light.
