Legacy Survey of Space and Time Data Preview 2: visit_summary dataset type

We present Rubin Data Preview 2 (DP2), the second data preview from the NDF- DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Data Preview 2 (DP2) comprises coadds, detection catalogs, and ancillary data products; and when fully released will also include single-epoch images and difference images. DP2 is derived from observations acquired by the LSST Science Camera (LSSTCam) on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Summit Facility on Cerro Pachón, Chile, primarily during the on-sky commissioning campaign between 2025-04-16 and 2025-09-21, supplemented by observations taken between 2025-10-25 and 2026-01-06 that overlap the commissioning footprint. The DP2 footprint comprises the Science Validation wide-area survey, five Deep Drilling Fields, and a number of targeted small-field regions, including Trifid and Lagoon, Prawn, M49, and New Horizons, all observed as part of the Rubin First Look campaign. Each field was imaged in up to six broad photometric bands, ugrizy, and coadded to produce deep imaging covering an estimated 3,000 deg2. The addition of single- visit-only areas expands the total DP2 footprint to an estimated 15,000 deg2, with coverage in at least one filter. The median per-visit PSF FWHM across the wide-area survey ranges from 1.17 arcsec in the z band to 1.26 arcsec in g and r bands. The deepest field, reaches estimated coadded 5σ depths of u=26 mag, g=26.8 mag, r=26.3 mag, i=26.1 mag, z=25.3 mag, y=23.9 mag. Based on a roughly five-month primary observing baseline and covering only part of the eventual LSST footprint, DP2's area, depth, and multiband coverage nonetheless support a broad range of early science investigations ahead of LSST Data Release This dataset is a subset of the full data release consisting of the visit_summary dataset type. These are metadata summarizing a visit. This release contains 28,698 datasets of this type.

Mitigation of the Brighter-fatter Effect in the LSST Camera

Abstract Thick, fully depleted charge-coupled devices are known to exhibit nonlinear behavior at high signal levels due to the dynamic behavior of charges collecting in the potential wells of pixels, called the brighter-fatter effect (BFE). The effect results in distorted images of bright calibration stars, creating a flux-dependent point-spread function that if left unmitigated, could make up a large fraction of the error budget in Stage IV weak-lensing (WL) surveys such as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). In this paper, we analyze image measurements of flat fields and artificial stars taken at different illumination levels with the LSST Camera (LSSTCam) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in order to quantify this effect in the LSSTCam before and after a previously introduced correction technique. We observe that the BFE evolves anisotropically as a function of flux due to higher-order BFEs, which violates the fundamental assumption of this correction method. We then introduce a new method based on a physically motivated model to account for these higher-order terms in the correction, and then we test the modified correction on both data sets. We find that the new method corrects the effect in flat fields better than it corrects the effect in artificial stars, which we suggest is the result of sub-pixel physics not included in this correction model. We use these results to define a new metric for the full-well capacity of our sensors and advise image processing strategies to further limit the impact of the effect on LSST WL science pathways.

Maximizing the Radar Generalized Image Quality Equation for Bistatic SAR Using Waveform Frequency Agility

The radar generalized image quality equation (RGIQE) is a metric used to measure both monostatic and bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BSAR) image quality, it is a function of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and 2-D bandwidth. The 2-D bandwidth is equal to the area of the transfer function’s (TF) passband region. With the exception of side-looking monostatic geometries, almost all monostatic and bistatic geometries have skewed passband shapes when waveform frequency parameters remain unchanged from pulse to pulse. Most synthetic aperture radar (SAR) applications require a rectangular-shaped passband region, this is achieved by inscribing a rectangular region within the skewed intrinsic passband region. Increasing skewness results in less inscription area reducing 2-D bandwidth, image SNR, and thus RGIQE capacity. In this article, a waveform with frequency agility is used to rectify the skewness that degrades RGIQE capacity. By changing the waveform’s center frequency and instantaneous bandwidth from pulse to pulse in a particular manner, the intrinsic passband region can be de-skewed. The de-skewed shape maximizes the inscription area thus maximizing 2-D bandwidth, image SNR, and RGIQE capacity. Here, three examples are given in this article, one monostatic geometry, and two bistatic geometries. RGIQE capacity is increased by 52.02%, 44.42%, and 79.09% for the three examples.
