6.3-micron water-vapor-band derivatives

Measurement of the absorptance in the 6.3-micron band of a 1-m column of water vapor as a function of concentration c, pressure p, and temperature T. From the measured absorptance, the first derivatives with respect to c, p, and T, as well as the second derivatives with respect to cc, pp, cp, and pT have been obtained. These experimental results have been compared with values calculated from the line parameters of the 720 strongest rotational lines in the band.

Design synthesis of the SEPS

This paper summarizes the most current configuration of the Solar Electric Propulsion Stage (SEPS) design resulting from the synthesis of key tradeoff analyses. The baseline SEPS is a 21-kW propulsion-power vehicle using the Shuttle/Interim Upper Stage (IUS) launch vehicle for planetary and geosynchronous missions. The trade analyses supporting the baseline configuration include ion thruster array pattern, solar array stowage concepts, and number of thrusters and power processors (PP). In addition, an integrated thermal control and structural system was optimized and designed to meet flight loads and dynamics requirements. Payload provisions, mercury propellant refueling, and design compatibility of the SEPS and Shuttle/IUS are presented.

Strainrange Partitioning - A tool for characterizing high-temperature low-cycle fatigue

The basic concepts of Strainrange Partitioning are reviewed, with particular reference to the areas requiring expanded verification. A cooperative program is proposed for achieving this broader verification through the additional experience provided by the participants in this program. The suggested program includes verification of the four basic life relationships (for PP, CC, PC, and CP type inelastic strainranges) for a variety of materials chosen by the participating organizations. The four relationships are then used in conjunction with the Interaction Damage Rule to predict the cyclic lives of tests involving various combinations of the basic strainrange components. The testing program also includes evaluation of the degree of insensitivity of these relationships to temperature as well as their utility in representing bounds on life.

Fatigue crack growth at elevated temperature 316 stainless steel and H-13 steel

Crack growths were measured at elevated temperatures under four types of loading: pp, pc, cp, and cc. In H-13 steel, all these four types of loading gave nearly the same crack growth rates, and the length of hold time had negligible effects. In AISI 316 stainless steel, the hold time effects on crack growth rate were negligible if the loading was tension-tension type; however, these effects were significant in reversed bending load, and the crack growth rates under these four types of loading varied considerably. Both tensile and compressive hold times caused increased crack growth rate, but the compressive hold period was more deleterious than the tensile one. Metallographic examination showed that all the crack paths under different types of loading were largely transgranular for both CTS tension-tension specimens and SEN reversed cantilever bending specimens. In addition, an electric potential technique was used to monitor crack growth at elevated temperature.

Continuation of surge life of transient voltage suppressor

Efforts expended in testing, analyzing and the development of a meaningful definition of the mean number of peak pulses before failure (mp2bf) levels of a family of transient voltage suppressor devices were documented. Tests were done to determine the ability of the transient suppressor to effectively and reliably protect against severe short term, millisecond range, and transient voltages of the types resulting from inductive load switching and induced lightning. Existing pulse testing instrumentation was utilized, interfaced to an automatic sequencing test rack accommodating up to 50 devices. Tests were performed in step stress increments of 25% beginning at 25% and extending thru 100% rated I(pp) for each voltage category. The four voltage types test were the 6.8V, 33V, 91V, and 190V. Engineering efforts addressed the problem of improving the reliability of the 190V types.

Ductility normalized-strain-range partitioning life relations for creep-fatigue life predictions

Techniques utilizing strainrange partitioning may be used to estimate the effects of the environment on the high-temperature, low-cycle, creep-fatigue resistance of alloys. Three levels of ductility-normalized strainrange-partitioning life relations are discussed: (1) strainrange partitioning relations from ductility data, (2) strainrange partitioning relations scaled by ductility ratios, and (3) strainrange partitioning life relations with measured PP lines. The procedures have demonstrated good agreement with available creep-fatigue data.

Strainrange partitioning behavior of the nickel-base superalloys, Rene 80 and IN-100

A study was made to assess the ability of the method of strainrange partitioning (SRP) to both correlate and predict high temperature, low cycle fatigue lives of nickel-base superalloys for gas turbine applications. Baseline data from strain-controlled, low cycle fatigue tests were expressed in terms of the PP, PC, CP, and CC partitioned inelastic strainrange versus life relationships for coated and uncoated Rene' 80 at 1000 C, Gatorized (creep-formed)IN 100 at 760 C, and cast IN 100 at 925 C. The SRP is shown to correlate the cyclic lives of the baseline tests to within factors of nearly two. The partitioned strainrange versus life relationships for uncoated Rene' 80 and cast IN 100 were also determined from the ductility normalized-strainrange partitioning equations. These were used to predict the cyclic lives of the baseline tests. Predicted and observed cyclic lives agreed to within factors of nearly three.

Gamma ray production in interstellar space

A simple representation of the observed invariant cross section for the production of neutral pions in pp collisions has been obtained. This representation is used to calculate the differential and integral production spectra of gamma rays in galactic space from the interactions of cosmic-ray nuclei with interstellar gas. These spectra are compared with those from existing calculations.

Thin n-i-p radiation-resistant solar cell feasibility study

Silicon solar cells were fabricated to verify the predictions that: (1) thin n(+)pp(+) cells can provide high values of open circuit voltage even when high resistivity base material ( 1000 omega-cm) is used; (2) cells with good p(+) back contacts will display an increase in open circuit voltage with decreasing cell thickness; and (3) high quality, thin, high resistivity, solar cells can be made using processing compatible with conventional practice. Analysis of I-V and spectral response measurements of these cells confirmed theoretical predictions and thereby pointed to voltages beyond the near 600 mV obtained in this study.

Parallel-Access Alinement Network Using Barrel Switches

Practical version of parallel-access alinement network utilizes two barrel switches for interfacing N parallel memory modules with N parallel processing elements. Switches are interconnected where 17 memory ports (MP's) are connected to 17 processor ports (PP's). Network uses two electronic barrel switches to direct data flow in parallel data-processing system. Each switch can shift a multibit parallel input a predetermined number of places to left or right, end off, or end around in one clock-pulse.

The establishment of a production-ready manufacturing process utilizing thin silicon substrates for solar cells

Three inch diameter Czochralski silicon substrates sliced directly to 5 mil, 8 mil, and 27 mil thicknesses with wire saw techniques were procured. Processing sequences incorporating either diffusion or ion implantation technologies were employed to produce n+p or n+pp+ solar cell structures. These cells were evaluated for performance, ease of fabrication, and cost effectiveness. It was determined that the use of 7 mil or even 4 mil wafers would provide near term cost reductions for solar cell manufacturers.

A gallium phosphide high-temperature bipolar junction transistor

Preliminary results are reported on the development of a high temperature (350 C) gallium phosphide bipolar junction transistor (BJT) for geothermal and other energy applications. This four-layer p(+)n(-)pp(+) structure was formed by liquid phase epitaxy using a supercooling technique to insure uniform nucleation of the thin layers. Magnesium was used as the p-type dopant to avoid excessive out-diffusion into the lightly doped base. By appropriate choice of electrodes, the device may also be driven as an n-channel junction field-effect transistor. The initial design suffers from a series resistance problem which limits the transistor's usefulness at high temperatures.

Mechanism of lubrication by tricresylphosphate (TCP)

The coefficient of friction was measured as a function of temperature on a pin-on-disk tribometer. Pins and disks of 440C and 52100 steels were lubricated with tricresylphosphate (TCP), 3.45 percent TCP in squalene, and pure squalene. The M-50 pins and disks were lubricated with 3.45 percent TCP in squalene and pure squalene. Experiments were conducted under limited lubrication conditions in dry ( 100 ppm H2O) air and dry ( pp H2O) nitrogen at 50 rpm (equivalent to a sliding velocity of 13 cm sec) and a constant load of 9.8 N (1 kg). Characteristic temperatures T sub r were identified for TCP on 52100 steel and for squalene on M-50 and 52100 steels, where the friction decreased because of a chemical reaction between the lubricant and the metal surface. The behavior of squalene obscured the influence of 3.45 percent TCP solute on the friction of the system. Wear volume measurements demonstrated that wear was lowest at temperatures just above T sub r. Comparing the behavior of TCP on M-50, 440C, and 52100 steels revealed that the TCP either reacted to give T sub r behavior or produced initial failure in the temperature range 223 + or - 5 C.

Flat-plate solar array project process development area, process research of non-CZ silicon material

The program is designed to investigate the fabrication of solar cells on N-type base material by a simultaneous diffusion of N-type and P-type dopants to form an P(+)NN(+) structure. The results of simultaneous diffusion experiments are being compared to cells fabricated using sequential diffusion of dopants into N-base material in the same resistivity range. The process used for the fabrication of the simultaneously diffused P(+)NN(+) cells follows the standard Westinghouse baseline sequence for P-base material except that the two diffusion processes (boron and phosphorus) are replaced by a single diffusion step. All experiments are carried out on N-type dendritic web grown in the Westinghouse pre-pilot facility. The resistivities vary from 0.5 (UC OMEGA)cm to 5 (UC OMEGA)cm. The dopant sources used for both the simultaneous and sequential diffusion experiments are commercial metallorganic solutions with phosphorus or boron components. After these liquids are applied to the web surface, they are baked to form a hard glass which acts as a diffusion source at elevated temperatures. In experiments performed thus far, cells produced in sequential diffusion tests have properties essentially equal to the baseline N(+)PP(+) cells. However, the simultaneous diffusions have produced cells with much lower IV characteristics mainly due to cross-doping of the sources at the diffusion temperature. This cross-doping is due to the high vapor pressure phosphorus (applied as a metallorganic to the back surface) diffusion through the SiO2 mask and then acting as a diffusant source for the front surface.

Electron and muon parameters of EAS and the composition of primary cosmic rays in 10(15) to approximately 10(16) eV

Estimation of the relative intensities of protons and heavy nuclei in primary cosmic rays in the energy region 10 to the 15th power approx. 10 to the 17th power eV, was done by a systematic comparison between all available observed data on various parameters of extensive air showers (EAS) and the results of simulation. The interaction model used is an extrapolation of scaling violation indicated by recent pp collider results. A composition consisting of various percentages of Fe in an otherwise pure proton beam was assumed. Greatest overall consistency between the data and the simulation is found when the Fe fraction is in the region of 25%.
