Computer-aided simulation study of photomultiplier tubes

A computer model that simulates the response of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and the associated voltage divider circuit is developed. An equivalent circuit that approximates the operation of the device is derived and then used to develop a computer simulation of the PMT. Simulation results are presented and discussed.

The solid state photomultiplier: Status of photon counting beyond the near-infrared

Rockwell International's Solid State Photomultiplier (SSPM) is an impurity-band avalanche device which can count individual photons with wavelengths between 0.4 and 28 micrometers. Its response to a photon is a pulse of between 10(exp 4) and 10(exp 5) conduction electrons, making it an important device for use in phenomenology. The characteristics of the SSPM make it a potentially important device for use in astronomical applications. Contract NAS2-12400 was initiated in June 1986 to conduct modeling and characterization studies of the SSPM to provide a basis for assessing its use in astronomical systems. Some SSPM models and results of measurements which characterize the group of SSPMs recently fabricated on this contract are discussed.

Photomultiplier for optically probing Comet Halley

A low mass eight-color channel photopolarimeter was developed for the Giotto spacecraft. Utilizing the spin of the spacecraft, a multichannel plate photomultiplier, and a unique optical design, the instrument required no moving parts to measure color and linear polarization. The photopolarimeter collected data as the spacecraft passed through the coma of Comet Halley on March 13 and 14, 1986. This instrument's design, calibration, and reduction are discussed and some final results are presented.

Laboratory Characterization and Modeling of a Near-Infrared Enhanced Photomultiplier Tube

The photon-starved channel for optical communications from deep space requires the development of detector technology that can achieve photon-counting sensitivities with high bandwidth. In this article, a near-infrared enhanced photomultiplier tube (PMT) with a quantum e.ciency of 0.08 at a 1.06- m wavelength is characterized in the laboratory. A Polya distribution model is used to compute the probability distribution function of the emitted secondary photoelectrons from the PMT. The model is compared with measured pulse-height distributions with reasonable agreement. The model accounts for realistic device parameters, such as the individual dynode stage gains and a shape parameter that is representative of the spatial uniformity of response across the photocathode and dynodes. Bit-error rate (BER) measurements also are presented for 4- and 8-pulse-position modulation (PPM) modulation schemes with data rates of 20 to 30 Mb/s. A BER of 10-2 is obtained for a mean of 8 detected photons.

Gain control of photomultiplier tubes used in detecting differential absorption lidar returns

A technique for controlling the gain of a photomultiplier tube (PMT) 20. A voltage divider (resistors 45-49 in FIG. 1 and zener diodes 60-65 in FIG. 3) is used to control the potentials on dynodes 5, 7, and 9 of PMT 20. Transistor switches 53 and 58 provide the control of the voltage divider in FIG. 1 and photodiodes 66, 67 and 70 provide the control in FIG. 3. The gain control of PMT 20 is in the range from 100% to less than 0.001% (100,000 to 1).

Quantum Yield of Gold-Cathode Photomultipliers

Two gold-cathode EMI 6255G tubes have been investigated for their quantum yield between 3100 and 1900 A. The tubes had cathodes of different appearances. One of these, numbered 3012, had a slight bluish tinge and was very transparent to visible light; the other, numbered 3021, had a definite gold coloration. The relative quantum yield of each tube was determined with the aid of a Cary model 14 recording spectrophotometer used as a monochromator. The monochromator relative-energy output was determined from the current output of a sodium-salicylate-coated RCA 1P21 photomultiplier. Each gold-cathode tube was then operated at 3000 v, and the central 1.8 cm cube of the cathode was exposed to the monochromator output.

Gated-Dynode Photomultiplier Tube Assembly for the Boronated Scintillator Detector of the ISS-CREAM Experiment

We present the design of a four-photomultiplier tube (PMT) assembly for measuring light generation in theBoronated Scintillator Detector (BSD) of the Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass experiment for the InternationalSpace Station (ISS-CREAM). The light produced in the scintillator includes a contribution from the captureof thermalized neutrons produced in cosmic ray interactions, as well as delayed fluorescence, in the range ofseveral microseconds following the incident cosmic ray impact. The BSD is held in an insensitive state until acosmic-ray trigger causes a rapid turn on of the PMTs to detect late light signals, several microseconds afterthe trigger. The design includes two pulsed high-voltage supplies, which serve to gate the first two dynodesof the Hamamatsu R1924A PMTs used in the assembly. When the dynode gates are held in the "off" state, this scheme is shown to suppress >105 photons from injection into the tube's multiplier stage, while beingcapable of rapid switching into a stable operating mode in less than 1 s. This mitigates any backgroundsfrom afterpulsing that might otherwise be present in the PMT response following the cosmic ray incidence.

Dual low vacuum-ultrahigh vacuum system for large-scale production of micro-channel plate photomultipliers

Systems and methods for the batch production of large numbers of highly uniform multichannel-plate photomultiplier tubes (MCP-PMTs) for large-scale applications are provided. The systems and methods employ dual, nested low-vacuum (LV) and UHV processing in a rapid-cycling, small-footprint, scalable, batch-production facility that is capable of fabricating many MCP-PMTs simultaneously.
