Measurement of Charmonium Production in $p + p$ and $p + d$ Interactions in the Fermilab SeaQuest Experiment

The Fermilab SeaQuest experiment has measured dimuon events from the interactions of 120GeV proton beam on liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets with dimuon mass between 2 and 9GeV. These dimuon events contain both the Drell-Yan process and the charmonium ($J/\psi$ and $\psi^\prime$) production. Unlike the Drell-Yan process which probes the antiquark distributions in the nucleons, the charmonium production is sensitive to both quark and gluon distributions. SeaQuest has extracted the $\sigma^{pd}/2\sigma^{pp}$ ratio as well as the differential cross sections for charmonium production in the kinematic region of $0.4 < x_F < 0.9$. The $\sigma^{pd}/2\sigma^{pp}$ ratio for charmonium production are found to be significantly different from that of the Drell-Yan process. The measured differential cross sections for charmonium production are compared with theoretical calculations using Color Evaporation Model and Non-Relativistic QCD model.

Evidence of Polarization‐Type Potential‐Induced Degradation (PID‐p) in the Field and Investigation of the Recovery Mechanism on Bifacial p ‐PERC Modules

This study investigates the polarization-type potential-induced degradation (PID-p) of bifacial glass/glass p-type passivated emitter rear contact (p-PERC) modules in the field and their recovery behavior. Modules were installed with three mounting configurations providing different albedo conditions. System voltage (–600, –1500, and +1500 V) was applied to the cell circuits, with respect to the grounded module frames. No degradation was observed for positively biased modules, but PID-p was identified on the rear side when cells are negatively biased, with maximum power dropping during the first days and stabilizing at values up to 8% loss. Electroluminescence images revealed a variation of the cells' PID-p susceptibility within a module. Three parameters were shown to impact the degradation rate: rear albedo light, voltage, and wetness conditions. Degraded modules were recovered either by (1) a positive bias (+1500 V), (2) outdoor illumination with the front side facing sun, (3) outdoor illumination with the rear side facing sun, or (4) dark storage. A recovery pattern was identified with I–V parameters decreasing to a local minimum before increasing to full recovery. The proposed mechanism is based on the band bending at the rear p-type Si/AlO x/SiN x interface, going from inversion to depletion and accumulation states. Full recovery was achieved in 2–7 h for the modules recovered with the rear side facing sun, four to eight nights for the modules positively biased at night, and 10–20 days for the modules with the front side facing sun. Dark storage showed slower recovery rates as I–V parameters were not improving even after 1 month. Here, the recovery rates were correlated with the net Coulombs transferred during the preceding PID stress: When more Coulombs are transferred during the degradation, the extent of degradation is greater, leading to slower recovery rates.

Evolution of structure and transport properties of the Ba 8 Cu 16 P 30 clathrate-I framework with the introduction of Ga

Two type-I clathrates were synthesized by introducing Ga into the framework of the Ba 8 Cu 16 P 30 type-I clathrate. The introduction of minute amounts of Ga, 1.9% Ga/M total (where M total = Cu + Ga), resulted in the disturbance of the completely ordered Pbcn superstructure of Ba 8 Cu 16 P 30 . Ba 8 Cu 15.43(2) Ga 0.3 P 30.26(3) crystallizes in a partially ordered orthorhombic Pmna clathrate-I superstructure with five out of 15 framework sites being jointly occupied by metal+phosphorus. Increasing the Ga content resulted in all framework sites being occupied by metal + phosphorus in the archetype cubic Pm n clathrate-I crystal structure of Ba 8 Cu 14.5(3) Ga 1.3 P 30.2(4) with 8.2% Ga/M total . A combination of energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, and single crystal x-ray diffraction was used to determine the structures alongside the compositions. The positional disorder was verified by 31 P solid state NMR spectroscopy. Characterization of the transport properties indicated that the Ga-substituted samples exhibit higher Seebeck coefficients and electrical resistivities compared to its pristine counterpart, in line with the expected reduction of the hole concentration due to Ga/Cu substitution. Moderate improvements in the thermoelectric power factor and overall figure-of-merit were observed for samples with 6.9% and 3.8% Ga/M total as compared to those for the pristine Ba 8 Cu 16 P 30 clathrate. Finally, band structure calculations shed light on how Ga substitution affects the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of studied clathrates.

The Development of Kinetic and Radiation Hydrodynamics Modeling of Thermonuclear Burn Propagation in Isochoric p - 11 B Through the Support of the INFUSE Program

The report summarizes DOE INFUSE-supported work between HB11 Energy and the University of Rochester’s TriForce Institute to improve computational modeling of advanced fusion fuels, especially proton–boron-11 (p- 11 B). The project extended the TriForce particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision code to include physics needed for dense, high-temperature p- 11 B burn studies, including p- 11 B fusion reactions, three-alpha-particle reaction products, relativistic Coulomb collisions, large-angle nuclear scattering, bremsstrahlung radiation, inverse bremsstrahlung absorption, and photon transport. The upgraded models were verified against focused physics tests and against known deuterium–tritium burn behavior. The study then used one-dimensional spherical simulations to estimate the conditions required for thermonuclear burn propagation in isochoric p- 11 B fuel. The calculations found that burn propagation is possible in the model, but only under very extreme hot-spot conditions, such as about 7000 g/cm 3 at 500 keV or 9000 g/cm 3 at 300 keV for a 20-micron hot spot. These conditions are much more demanding than current demonstrated inertial confinement fusion hot spots. The report concludes that the INFUSE collaboration successfully advanced kinetic and radiation modeling capabilities for p- 11 B fusion and provided useful estimates of ignition requirements. However, the simulated fuel gains remain below what would be needed for practical inertial fusion energy, and further work is needed to reconcile differences among kinetic, radiation-hydrodynamic, and analytic models and to identify more achievable target designs.

Measurements of ${\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ production cross sections and constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {TeV} $

The production of Z boson pairs in proton–proton (${\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} $) collisions, ${{\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow ({\mathrm{Z}}/\gamma ^*)({\mathrm{Z}}/\gamma ^*) \rightarrow 2\ell 2\ell '}$, where ${\ell ,\ell ' = {\mathrm{e}}}$ or ${{\upmu }}$, is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13$\,\text {TeV}$ with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$, collected during 2016–2018. The ${\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ production cross section, $\sigma _{\text {tot}} ({\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} ) = 17.4 \pm 0.3 \,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.5 \,\text {(syst)} \pm 0.4 \,\text {(theo)} \pm 0.3 \,\text {(lumi)} \text { pb} $, measured for events with two pairs of opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons produced in the mass region ${60< m_{\ell ^+\ell ^-} < 120\,\text {GeV}}$ is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are also measured and agree with theoretical predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ${\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ and ${{\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} \gamma }$ couplings.

Observational and theoretical analyses of polar cap/auroral region f(sub p) and 2 f(sub p) emissions using the polar and DE 1 satellites

The objective of this proposal was to conduct a comprehensive observational and theoretical investigation, including 2-D numerical simulations of emissions that occur near f(sub p) and 2 f(sub p) as observed by the Dynamics Explorer 1 (DE 1) spacecraft in the mid-altitude polar magnetosphere. Electrostatic electron plasma waves (or Langmuir waves) and associated electromagnetic (ETD) radiation near f(sub p) and 2 f(sub p) have previously been observed associated with the Earth's foreshock and in coronal/solar wind type II and III solar radio bursts. The observations of similar emissions in the terrestrial polar magnetosphere have not been previously reported and are important for a better understanding of the range of generation processes. We have been cataloging the location, electric and magnetic intensity, polarization, bandwidth, etc. of the emissions. The theoretical analysis included linear and nonlinear plasma theory. The goal was to fully describe the generation processes for both the f(sub p) (PF component) and 2 f(sub p) (H component) emissions. Although this goal was not completely accomplished, we have made significant advances in our understanding of these emissions.

Measurement of inclusive electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays in p + p collisions at s = 200 GeV with the STAR detector

We report a new measurement of the production cross section for inclusive electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) at midrapidity (|y| < 0.7) in p + p collisions at √s = 200 GeV. Overall, the result is presented for 2.5 < P T < 10 GeV/c with an improved precision above 6 GeV/c with respect to the previous measurements, providing more constraints on perturbative QCD calculations. Moreover, this measurement also provides a high-precision reference for measurements of nuclear modification factors for inclusive electrons from open-charm and -bottom hadron decays in heavy-ion collisions.

Nuclear Astrophysics in the Storage Ring: Background Suppressed Simultaneous Measurement of (p,γ) and (p,n) Reactions

We report the application of the new elimination of Rutherford elastic scattering technique for the measurement of proton-induced reaction cross sections utilizing stored ions decelerated to astrophysical energies. This approach results in a background reduction factor of about 1 order of magnitude, enabling the first measurement of a (p, n) cross section in a storage ring. Here, the reaction channels 124 Xe⁢(p,n) and 124 Xe⁢(p,γ) have been studied just above the neutron threshold energy. The new data provide valuable constraints for Hauser-Feshbach theory and extrapolation of the (p,γ) cross section to lower energies. Most importantly, for nuclei of limited availability, the method represents a powerful improvement to efficiently study proton-induced reactions at energies within or close to the astrophysical Gamow window, bringing many reaction measurements within reach that were previously inaccessible in the laboratory.

Measurements of $\pi ^\pm $, $K^\pm $, p and $\bar{p}$ spectra in $^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$ collisions at 13A to 150A $\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $\pi ^\pm $, $K^\pm $, p and $\bar{p}$ produced in $^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$ collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$. The analysis uses the 10% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the $K^\pm $/$\pi ^\pm $ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $K^\pm $ transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic $p+p$ and central Pb + Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either within statistical or dynamical models.

Constraining the P 30 ( p , γ ) S 31 Reaction Rate in ONe Novae via the Weak, Low-Energy, β -Delayed Proton Decay of Cl 31

The 30 P(p,γ) 31 S reaction plays an important role in understanding the nucleosynthesis of A ≥ 30 nuclides in oxygen-neon novae. The Gaseous Detector with Germanium Tagging was used to measure 31 Cl β-delayed proton decay through the key J π = 3/2 + , 260-keV resonance. The intensity $I$$^{260}_{βp}$ = $8.3$$^{+1.2}_{–0.9}$ × 10 –6 represents the weakest β-delayed, charged-particle emission ever measured below 400 keV, resulting in a proton branching ratio of Γ p /Γ = $2.5$$^{+0.4}_{–0.3}$ × 10 –4 . Here, by combining this measurement with shell-model calculations for Γγ and past work on other resonances, the total 30 P(p,γ) 31 S rate has been determined with reduced uncertainty. The new rate has been used in hydrodynamic simulations to model the composition of nova ejecta, leading to a concrete prediction of 30 Si: 28 Si excesses in presolar nova grains and the calibration of nuclear thermometers.

Measurements of charged-particle multiplicity dependence of higher-order net-proton cumulants in p + p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV from STAR at RHIC

We report on the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of net-proton cumulant ratios up to sixth order from $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured ratios C 4 /C 2 , C 5 /C 1 , and C 6 /C 2 decrease with increased charged-particle multiplicity and rapidity acceptance. Neither the Skellam baselines nor PYTHIA8 calculations account for the observed multiplicity dependence. In addition, the ratios C 5 /C 1 and C 6 /C 2 approach negative values in the highest-multiplicity events, which implies that thermalized QCD matter may be formed in p+p collisions.

Study of h c → 3 ( π + π − ) π 0 , h c → 2 ( π + π − ) ω , h c → 2 ( π + π − ) π 0 η , h c → 2 ( π + π − ) η , and h c → p p ¯

Based on ( 2712.4 ± 14.1 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector, we study the decays h c → 3 ( π + π − ) π 0 , h c → 2 ( π + π − ) ω , h c → 2 ( π + π − ) π 0 η , h c → 2 ( π + π − ) η , and h c → p p ¯ via ψ ( 3686 ) → π 0 h c . The decay channel h c → 3 ( π + π − ) π 0 is observed for the first time, and its branching fraction is determined to be ( 9.28 ± 1.14 ± 0.77 ) × 10 − 3 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, first evidence is found for the modes h c → 2 ( π + π − ) π 0 η and h c → 2 ( π + π − ) ω with significances of 4.8 σ and 4.7 σ , and their branching fractions are determined to be ( 7.55 ± 1.51 ± 0.77 ) × 10 − 3 and ( 4.00 ± 0.86 ± 0.35 ) × 10 − 3 , respectively. No significant signals of h c → 2 ( π + π − ) η and h c → p p ¯ are observed, and the upper limits of the branching fractions of these decays are determined to be < 6.19 × 10 − 4 and < 4.40 × 10 − 5 at the 90% confidence level, respectively. High pressure chemical reactivity and structural study of the Na–P and Li–P systems

In this work, the Na–P and Li–P chemical systems were studied under pressure using synchrotron X-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell up to 20 GPa, combined with the AIRSS ab initio random structure searching technique. The results reveal an enhanced reactivity of both alkali metals with phosphorous at slightly elevated pressures. This enables the synthesis of Li 3 P and Na 3 P at room temperature (RT) starting from element precursors, bypassing the established chemical synthesis methods. Both compounds undergo a pressure-induced phase transition from the hexagonal Na 3 As-type structure (stable at ambient conditions) towards a Fm m (FCC) structure that remains stable up to 20 GPa. Attempts to synthesize compounds with higher alkali metal content (such as Li 5 P) using high-temperature and -pressure conditions (up to 2000+ K and 30 GPa), inspired by recent theoretical predictions, were not successful.

Ultrawide bandgap semiconductor heterojunction p–n diodes with distributed polarization-doped p-type AlGaN layers on bulk AlN substrates

Ultrawide bandgap heterojunction p–n diodes with polarization-induced AlGaN p-type layers are demonstrated using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on bulk AlN substrates. Current–voltage characteristics show a turn-on voltage of Vbi≈5.5 V, a minimum room temperature ideality factor of η≈1.63, and more than 12 orders of current modulation at room temperature. A stable current operation of the ultrawide bandgap semiconductor diode is measured up to a temperature of 300 °C. The one-sided n+–p heterojunction diode design enables a direct measurement of the spatial distribution of polarization-induced mobile hole density in the graded AlGaN layer from the capacitance–voltage profile. The measured average mobile hole density is p∼5.7×1017 cm−3, in close agreement with what is theoretically expected from distributed polarization doping. Light emission peaked at 260 nm (4.78 eV) observed in electroluminescence corresponds to interband radiative recombination in the n+ AlGaN layer. A much weaker deep-level emission band observed at 3.4 eV is attributed to cation-vacancy and silicon complexes in the heavily Si-doped AlGaN layer. These results demonstrate that distributed polarization doping enables ultrawide bandgap semiconductor heterojunction p–n diodes that have wide applications ranging from power electronics to deep-ultraviolet photonics. These devices can operate at high temperatures and in harsh environments.

A comparative study of p(+)n and n(+)p InP solar cells made by a closed ampoule diffusion

The purpose was to demonstrate the possibility of fabricating thermally diffused p(+)n InP solar cells having high open-circuit voltage without sacrificing the short circuit current. The p(+)n junctions were formed by closed-ampoule diffusion of Cd through a 3 to 5 nm thick anodic or chemical phosphorus-rich oxide cap layer grown on n-InP:S Czochralski LEC grown substrates. For solar cells made by thermal diffusion the p(+)n configuration is expected to have a higher efficiency than the n(+)p configuration. It is predicted that the AM0, BOL efficiencies approaching 19 percent should be readily achieved providing that good ohmic front contacts could be realized on the p(+) emitters of thickness lower than 1 micron.
