An intensity-modulated dual-wavelength He-Ne laser for remote sensing of methane

A new type of dual wavelength He-Ne laser is described in which the output power at each of the two wavelengths is modulated with equal amplitude and opposite phase to each other. This laser source can greatly simplify the setup and improve the sensitivity of the differential absorption measurements for the methane detection, as verified by a preliminary experiment. A simple scheme to measure the concentration of methane is also proposed.

High-resolution forbidden Ne II observations of the ionized filaments in the Galactic center

The forbidden Ne II 12.8 micron emission from the central 10 arcsec of the Galaxy has been observed with 1.5 arcsec resolution. The broad lines previously observed in this region are resolved into separate features associated with the filaments and knots of radio continuum emission present. The radial velocity varies rapidly and continuously with position along the filaments, with gradients of up to 30 km/s. The emission along the 'eastern arm' is mapped. The velocities are consistent with streams of gas orbiting about the center. A simple model of gravitationally dominated orbits fits the data; the masses estimated to lie within the orbits suggest the presence of a central mass of about 2.5 million solar. The implications of this model and possible objections to it are considered.

Multilevel calculation of the Ne IV solar spectrum

A calculation of the atomic parameters of the seven-electron ion Ne IV yields radiative rates A(ki) and distorted-wave collision strengths Omega (ki) between 72 levels of the six configurations 2s2 2p3, 2s2p4, 2p5, 2p2 3s, 2p2 3p, and 2p2 3d. These are used to obtain expected line intensities for quiet, active, and flare solar conditions. Comparisons are made with available solar observations. Good agreement is found, including observed density-sensitivity in the case of the multiplet at 469.8 A. The atomic radiative rates are separately compared with laboratory beam-foil measurements and are shown to be in reasonable agreement with the latter.

Nuclear collective flow and charged-pion emission in Ne-nucleus collisions at E/A = 800 MeV

Triple-differential cross sections of charged pions were measured for collisions of Ne projectiles at E/A = 800 MeV with NaF, Nb, and Pb targets. The reaction plane was estimated event by event from the light-baryon momentum distribution. For heavy targets, preferential emission of charged pions away from the interaction zone toward the projectile side was observed in the transverse direction. Such a preferential emission, which is not predicted by cascade calculations, may be attributed to a stronger pion absorption by the heavier spectator remnant.

Atmospheric methane measurement instrument using a Zeeman-split He-Ne laser

The construction of an atmospheric methane measurement instrument based on a Zeeman-split IR He-Ne laser is reported. The laser has a tranverse magnetic field over about 2/3 of its gain length and can oscillate at an (unsplit) frequency (2947.91/cm) centered on a methane absorption line, or on either of two frequencies split by + or - 0.055/cm from the center, with low CH4 absorption. The laser is tuned to dwell sequentially at each frequency, giving two differential absorption measurements in each 46-ms tuning cycle. Atmospheric measurements are made using two multiple pass absorption cells, one with fast (0.75-s) and one with slow (5-s) flow response times. Fluctuations in ambient CH4 of about 20-ppb (rms, 1-s averaging) are detected, with interference fringe effects the dominant noise source. The instrument has operated in a field experiment (NASA GTE/ABLE-3A) in Alaska.

Broad forbidden Ne III line emission and intermediate-density gas around QSO nuclei

A broad emission feature, with a velocity width of the order of 5000 km/s, has been observed near rest wavelength 3870 A in the spectra of three low-redshift QSOs. The line is identified as forbidden Ne III 3869. This broad line may have varied over a time scale of two years, indicating that clouds of intermediate density between 10 to the 8th and 10 to the 11th/cu cm may coexist in the broad-line region. Such clouds would be optically thin, highly ionized, and subject to rapid destruction by radiation pressure.

Candidate sites for lunar observatories, with a recommended example - The NE Orientale Basin

This paper discusses site selection criteria for a moon-based observatory, using an area on the NE flank of the Orientale Basin at 80 deg W on the lunar equator as a recommended example. Such a site would provide the following advantages: visibility of essentially the entire celestial sphere, continual line of sight to earth, dynamic accessibility for minimum energy landings and takeoffs, closeness to the far-side for installation of instruments requiring a radio silent environment, trafficable and workable terrain, closeness to geologically important features, and closeness to volcanic features with potential resources. Polar and far-side sites have advantages as well, and no one site can meet all requirements. It is suggested that other candidate sites be evaluated by the criteria used for the Orientale Basin.

Secular Variation Across the Oceans: a Retrospective Study from 35 Years of Shipboard Total Field Measurements in the NE Atlantic

This is a pilot study to determine whether secular variation information can be retrieved from underway shipboard total field measurements with sufficient accuracy to complement geomagnetic data from land-based observatories. Applying the various new techniques described in this report, we extracted values of the total field at 42,677 crossovers or ship track intersection points contained in data sets collected between 18 degrees N and 50 degress N in the NE Atlantic, and extending temporally from 1955 to 1990. We used an edited subset of these total field values to derive the secular variation at 30,140 different locations in the study area, and compared the results with DGRF secular variation over the study area, calculated at 5 year intervals. The derived and DGRF values agree well, showing that indeed marine data can be a source for secular variations. However the analysis demonstrated that due to inherent noise in the marine data, only minor improvements on the DGRF values for the secular variation can be achieved.

Solubility and partitioning of Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe in minerals and synthetic basaltic melts

The solubilities of Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe gases were measured in natural samples of anorthite, diopside, forsterite, spinel, and synthetic basaltic melts, the samples which represent equilibrium pairs in the Fo-An-Di-SiO2 system. Results show that, in natural minerals, the solubilities of these gases increase with increasing atomic number. In contrast, the solubilities of noble gases in the synthetic basaltic melts decreased with increasing atomic number. The partition coefficients increased with increasing atomic number for all mineral/melt pairs.

Solar Doppler-shift measurements in the Ne VII 465 A emission line

Using a Dopplergram obtained with the Naval Research Laboratory extreme ultraviolet spectrograph on Skylab, we have searched for Doppler shifts in the Ne VII 465 A emission line, which is formed at a temperature of about 500,000 K. In the quiet sun we find no measurable average Doppler shift to a measurement accuracy of +/- 18 km/s. Small regions of the quiet sun do, however, display measurable Doppler shifts. In active regions, we measure Doppler shifts indicating downflow velocities of up to 70 km/s.

Theoretical study of metal ions bound to He, Ne, and Ar

Accurate ab initio calculations for all of the first-row transition-metal ions with He, Ne, and Ar were performed at the modified coupled-pair functional level of electron correlation treatment. It is concluded that there is a strong correlation between the binding energy and bond length, since the bonding is predominantly electrostatic. The calculated binding energies are found to be about 20 pct less than the experimental values due to the theoretical limitations.

A calibration of the production rate ratio P-21/P-26 by low energy secondry neutrons: Identification of Ne spallation components at the 10(exp 6) atoms/g level in terrestrial samples

The spallation ratio (Ne-22/Ne-21)(sub c) from Si was determined as 1.243 plus or minus 0.022 in a terrestrial quartz sample. We carried out a calibration of the in-situ production rate ratio P-21/P-26 in quartz samples for which Be-10 and Al-26 production rates were previously measured. A ratio P-21/P-26 of 0.67 plus or minus 0.12 is obtained.

Multiplicities of secondaries in nuclear interactions, induced by Ne-20, Ar-40 and Fe-56 nuclei at 0.1-0.5 GeV/nucleon

Multiplicities of various species of charged secondaries produced in inelastic interactions of Ne-20, Ar-40, and Fe-56 nuclei with emulsion nuclei, at 0.1-0.5 GeV/nucleon have been measured. The data obtained are compared with the results for interactions of higher energy nuclei with emulsion nuclei. The dependences of the nucleus-nucleus interaction parameters on masses and energies of colliding nuclei are examined.

Atomic data from the iron project. 3: Rate coefficients for electron impact excitation of boron-like ions: Ne VI, Mg VIII, Al IX, Si X, S XII, Ar XIV, Ca XVI and Fe XXII

Collison strengths and maxwellian averaged rate coefficients have been calculated for the 105 transitions among all 15 fine structure levels of the 8 LS terms 2s(sup 2) 2 P(P-2(sup 0 sub 1/, 3/2)), 2s2p(sup 2)(P-4(sub 1/2,3/2,5/2), D-2(sub 3/2, 5/2), S-2(sub 1/2), P-2(sub 1/2, 3/2)), 2p(sup 3)(S-4(sup 0)(sub 3/2), D-2(sup 0 sub 3/2, 5/2), P-2(sup 0 sub 1/2, 3/2)) in highly- charged B-like Ne, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ar, Ca and Fe. Rate coefficients have been tabulated at a wide range of temperatures, depending on the ion charge and abundance in plasma sources. Earlier work for O IV has also been extended to include the high temperature range. A brief discussion of the calculations, sample results, and comparison with earlier works is also given. While much of the new data should be applicable to UV spectral diagnostics, the new rates for the important ground state fine structure transition P-2(sup 0 sub 1/2)-P-2(sup 0 sub 3/2) should result in significant revision of the IR cooling rates in plasmas where B-like ions are prominent constituents, since the new rate coefficients are generally higher by several factors compared with the older data.

Increasing the yield of Ar((sup 3)P(sub 2, 0)) and Ne((sub 3)P(sub 2, 0)) effusing from a glow discharge by using a longitudinal magnetic field

It is demonstrated that a longitudinal magnetic field applied to a low-pressure, low-voltage, hot cathode glow discharge will substantially increase the intensity of metastable atoms effusing from a central anode slit. For an argon discharge there is a fourfold increase in the effusing Ar((sup 3)P(sub 2, 0)) atom intensity and for neon there is a 14-fold increase in Ne((sup 3)P(sub 2, 0)) intensity.

Electronic Absorption Spectra of Neutral Perylene (C20H12), Terrylene (C30H16), and Quaterrylene (C40H20) and their Positive and Negative Ions: Ne Matrix-Isolation Spectroscopy and Time Dependent Density Functional Theory Calculations

We present a full experimental and theoretical study of an interesting series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the oligorylenes. The absorption spectra of perylene, terrylene and quaterrylene in neutral, cationic and anionic charge states are obtained by matrix-isolation spectroscopy in Ne. The experimental spectra are dominated by a bright state that red shifts with growing molecular size. Excitation energies and state symmetry assignments are supported by calculations using time dependent density functional theory methods. These calculations also provide new insight into the observed trends in oscillator strength and excitation energy for the bright states: the oscillator strength per unit mass of carbon increases along the series.
