Moderate resolution thermal mapping of Mars - The channel terrain around the Chryse basin

Moderate resolution (about 30 km) thermal inertia estimates have been made for several regions in the northern hemisphere of Mars. Examples of these maps are presented for the region 0-45 deg N, 0-90 deg W. In the region adjoining the Chryse basin there are two major channels, Kasei Vallis and Ares Vallis, whose floor materials have higher thermal inertia than the surrounding upland regions. Moreover, there are numerous craters in the region which have high inertia-low albedo features on the crater floor.

Pitfalls and guidelines for the numerical evaluation of moderate-order system frequency response

The design and evaluation of a feedback control system via frequency response methods relies heavily upon numerical methods. In application, one can usually develop low order simulation models which for the most part are devoid of numerical problems. However, when complex feedback interactions, for example, between instrument control systems and their flexible mounting structure, must be evaluated, simulation models become moderate to large order and numerical problems become common. A large body of relevant numerical error analysis literature is summarized in a large language understandable to nonspecialists. The intent is to provide engineers using simulation models with an engineering feel for potential numerical problems without getting intertwined in the complexities of the associated mathematical theory. Guidelines are also provided by suggesting alternate state of the art methods which have good numerical evaluation characteristics.

Moderate temperature sodium cells. I - Transition metal disulfide cathodes

TiS2, VS2, and Nb(1.1)S2 transition metal disulfides were evaluated as cathode materials for a moderate temperature rechargeable Na cell operating at 130 C. The 1st discharge of TiS2 results in a capacity of 0.85 eq/mole; approximately half of the Na in the 1st phase spanning the Na range from zero to 0.30 and almost all the Na in the 2nd phase spanning the 0.37 to 0.80 range are rechargeable. VS2 intercalates up to one mole of Na/mole of VS2 in the 1st discharge; the resulting Na(x)VS2 ternary consists of 3 phases in the 3 ranges of Na from zero to 1. Niobium disulfide undergoes a phase change in the 1st discharge; the average rechargeable capacity in extended cycling of this cathode is 0.50 eq/mole.

Structure and decay characteristics of turbulence in the near- and far-wake of a moderately loaded compressor rotor-blade

The wake of a turbomachinery rotor-blade is turbulent, highly three-dimensional, and nonisotropic with appreciable curvature in the trailing-edge and near-wake regions. The characteristics of the turbulence vary considerably with radius, blade loading, free-stream turbulence, Reynolds number, and the rotor-blade geometry. This paper is concerned with the turbulence properties of a moderately loaded compressor blade, particularly near the blade trailing-edge. The tangential variation of the axial, tangential and radial intensities and stresses across the wake, as well as their decay characteristics were measured with a tri-axial hot-wire probe in the rotor frame of reference. The decay of intensities and stresses were found to be very rapid in the trailing-edge and near-wake regions and slow in the far-wake region. The effects of inlet-guide-vane and the hub-wall boundary layers on the rotor wake turbulence spectra are also discussed. Similarity rules for the three components of intensity are also derived and presented in this paper.

The structure of moderately strong winds at a mid-Atlantic coastal site /below 75m/

Velocity and temperature measurements were obtained from an instrumented 76-meter meteorological tower located near the Atlantic Ocean at Wallops Island, Virginia. The instrumentation consists of a slow-response cup-vane and resistance temperature system and a hot-film, thermocouple system for turbulence measurements. Results are presented for moderately strong winds from westerly directions (category I) and for on-shore winds from southerly directions (category II). Results from category I winds indicate the presence of low-frequency velocity fluctuations affecting all turbulence parameters similar to the observations made in Kansas and Minnesota. Winds of category II experience a change in surface roughness and surface temperature as they cross the coast line, resulting in the development of an internal boundary layer. The stable ocean air above the IBL shows extremely low turbulence levels (less than 3%). Because of the lack of turbulent mixing with adjacent layers, Coriolis effects are important and profiles with a maximum velocity at heights between 60-200 m exist.

Experiments on the flow and acoustic properties of a moderate-Reynolds-number supersonic jet

Flow and acoustic properties of a jet at Reynolds number of 70,000 were studied at Mach 2.1. Measurements in a free jet test facility were made with pitot tubes and hot-wire anemometry. Center-line Mach number distributions for natural and excited jets were obtained. A slow initial growth rate was in the potential core region of the jet, indicating a transition from laminar to turbulent flow in moderate Reynolds number jets. The transition occurred within the first 2-3 diameters. Spectral components were calculated for the fluctuating flowfield, and sound pressure levels were measured for the overall near-field noise. The centroid of noise was located about 8 nozzle diameters downstream. The growth rates of instabilities were determined to be in agreement with linear stability theory predictions over a broad frequency range.

An efficient low- and moderate-resolution spectrograph for the Hale telescope

A new low-to-moderate resolution spectrograph has been designed and built for the Cassegrain focus of the Hale 5.08-meter telescope. To maximize efficiency, resolution, and wavelength coverage the light is divided into two spectra regions by a dichroic filter behind the entrance slit, after which there are two completely separate spectrographs. The blue spectrograph operates from 3200 A to 5200 A while the red one goes from 5200 A to 10,000 A. The red detector is an 800 x 800 TI CCD while the blue detector is a 320 x 512 RCA CCD or a Shectrograph image pulse-counting system. A Boksenberg IPCS can also be mounted on the blue camera. The overall efficiency of the Cassegrain telescope, spectrographs, and CCD's combined, ranges from 5 percent to 13 percent between 3600 A and 8200 A. The spectrograph is usable from 3200 A to 10,400 A.

Hot mantles, moderate photospheres for Wolf-Rayet stars

The amount of continuous energy from Wolf-Rayet stars and the shape of the continuous spectrum from the ultraviolet to the near infrared correspond to effective temperatures in the range 25,000 to 30,000 K. The value of log g is of the order of 4.0 + or - 0.5. Thus the photospheres of Wolf-Rayet stars correspond to those of moderately hot stars. The line spectra of Wolf-Rayet stars, however, indicate that electron temperatures greater than 30,000 K occur in the outer atmospheres or mantles of these stars. Here outflow is important.

Performance of charge-injection-device infrared detector arrays at low and moderate backgrounds

Three 2 x 64 element charge injection device infrared detector arrays were tested at low and moderate background to evaluate their usefulness for space based astronomical observations. Testing was conducted both in the laboratory and in ground based telescope observations. The devices showed an average readout noise level below 200 equivalent electrons, a peak responsivity of 4 A/W, and a noise equivalent power of 3x10 sq root of W/Hz. Array well capacity was measured to be significantly smaller than predicted. The measured sensitivity, which compares well with that of nonintegrating discrete extrinsic silicon photoconductors, shows these arrays to be useful for certain astronomical observations. However, the measured readout efficiency and frequency response represent serious limitations in low background applications.

Spectra of solar proton ground level events using neutron monitor and neutron moderated detector recordings

Recordings on relativistic solar flare protons observed at Sanae, Antarctic, show that the percentage increase in counting rates of the neutron moderated detector (4NMD) is larger than the percentage increase in counting rates of the 3NM64 neutron monitor. These relative increases are described by solar proton differential spectra j sub s(P) = AP(beta). The power beta is determined for each event and the hardnesses of the temporal variations of beta, found for the ground level events (GLE) of 7 May, 1978 and 22 November, 1977.

The neutron moderated detector and groundbased cosmic ray modulation studies

Reports appear on modulation studies with the neutron monitor without lead. Some of these studies cast doubt on the reliability of this detector. The stability of the neutron moderated detector (NMD) at Sanae, Antarctic is discussed. The barometric coeficient of the 4NMD for epoch 1976 appears not to differ statistically from the 0.73%/mb of the 3NM64. The monthly averaged hourly counting rate of our 4NMD and 3NM64 correlates very well (correlation coefficient: 98%) over the years from 1974-1984, with the 4NMD showing a 8% larger long term modulation effect than the 3NM64, indicating a difference in sensitivities of the two detectors. From this difference in sensitivities spectra of ground level solar proton events and modulation functions of Forbush decreases are deduced.

Moderate temperature sodium cells. V - Discharge reactions and rechargeability of NiS and NiS2 positive electrodes in molten NaAlCl4

NiS2 and NiS have been characterized as high energy density rechargeable positive electrodes for moderate-temperature Na batteries of the configuration, Na(1)/beta double prime-Al2O3/NaAlCl4(1), NiSx. The batteries operate in the temperature range 170 - 190 C. Positive electrode reactions during discharge/charge cycles have been characterized. Excellent rechargeability of the batteries has been demonstrated by extended cell cycling. A Na/NiS2 cell, operating at 190 C, exceeded 600 deep discharge/charge cycles with practically no capacity deterioration. The feasibility of secondary Na/NiSx batteries with specific energies equal to or greater than 50 Wh/lb and cycle lifes exceeding 1000 deep discharge/charge cycles has been demonstrated.

Flow in sigmoid diffusers of moderate curvature

Developing laminar and turbulent flows have been measured in two diffusers with S- and C-shaped center-lines, small divergence angle and moderate curvature. The square inlet cross-section expanded in the plane of curvature to a rectangle with an exit-to-inlet area ratio of 1.5. Laser-Doppler anemometry was used to measure three velocity components and, in turbulent flow, the associated fluctuations and cross-correlations. Wall static pressure measurements are also reported. Flow visualization did not reveal the presence of any recirculation regions. Pressure-driven secondary flows are present in both ducts, but are generally smaller than those measured in similar ducts of uniform cross-section area.

Calcium depletion toward moderately reddened stars

Calcium depletions toward five moderately reddened (E/B - V/ greater than 0.35 and less than 0.45) stars and toward HD 147889, a heavily reddened (E/B - V/ = 1.08) member of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex is reported. A developmental Multi-Anode Microchannel Array Detector was used to collect the data; its performance is characterized. Comparing the results for calcium from one line of sight to another and to those for other species, it is found that calcium exhibits a depletion pattern remarkably similar to that of silicon. The depletion of iron, on the other hand, has smaller variations and therefore does not correlate as well. Also, the depletion results for manganese and sulfur, both normally undepleted in diffuse clouds, have been included for comparison.

MODIS: Moderate-resolution imaging spectrometer. Earth observing system, volume 2B

The Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS), as presently conceived, is a system of two imaging spectroradiometer components designed for the widest possible applicability to research tasks that require long-term (5 to 10 years), low-resolution (52 channels between 0.4 and 12.0 micrometers) data sets. The system described is preliminary and subject to scientific and technological review and modification, and it is anticipated that both will occur prior to selection of a final system configuration; however, the basic concept outlined is likely to remain unchanged.

Moderate resolution spectroscopy for the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF)

A conceptual design for an IR spectrometer capable of both low resolution (lambda/Delta-lambda = 50; 2.5-200 microns) and moderate resolution (1000; 4-200 microns) has been developed. This instrument will allow the spectroscopic study in the infrared of objects ranging from within the solar system to distant galaxies. The spectroscopic capability provided by this instrument for SIRTF will give astronomical orders of magnitude greater sensitivity for the investigation of faint objects than has been previously available.

Interstellar abundances in dense, moderately reddened lines of sight. I - Observational evidence for density-dependent depletion

The nature of dust-gas interactions, which are capable of modifying the size distribution of interstellar grains and thus causing changes in the selective extinction curve, are investigated through depletion studies. The gaseous abundances of 15 elements have been determined for several lines of sight toward moderately reddened stars, each having an anomalous extinction curve and a large abundance of cyanogen (CN). The basic result of this study is that certain elements appear to deplete preferentially in interstellar clouds having a large abundance of CN. Since CN is a sensitive indicator of the interstellar spatial density, the data might suggest that the unique pattern of enhanced depletion observed here represents the best observational evidence of accretion.

Preliminary system concepts for MODIS - A moderate resolution imaging spectrometer for EOS

Plans are underway at NASA Goddard to develop a moderate-resolution (0.5-1.0-km) imaging spectrometer with 104 spectral bands in the range from 0.4 to 14.2 microns for use as a NASA facility aboard the Space Station Earth Observation System. Science requirements call for the system to image the earth's surface every 2 d for a period of 10 yr, using two electrooptic sensors. MODIS-T (tilt) has 64 10-nm-wide channels in the 400-1000-nm range. The system has 5-cm-diameter optics, scans + or - 45 deg, and can be pointed + or - 60 deg along track. Calculated S/N is in excess of 800:1 near 400 nm. MODIS-N (nadir) scans + or - 45 deg about nadir with 12 500-m- and 28 1000-m-resolution channels, including two polarization channels and 14 thermal-IR channels. With 20-cm-diameter optics the calculated S/N of the majority of the reflected solar bands is over 1000:1. NETD values for the thermal bands are on the order of 0.1-0.2 K at 300 K. Combined MODIS-T and MODIS-N data rates are 8.3 Mb/s in daylight and 1.5 Mb/s at night, resulting in a total of 360 Gb/d.
